When you order something online, they most likely ship it to you via UPS. Sometimes they ship it to you via USPS, the good old government postal service. Now, I have no problems with the service - really. I do have problems with their online tracking system.
Typically I will get the shipment before anything shows up on the track and confirm page at USPS.gov. If at best, I would get a notice that it has been shipped out the day it arrives at my office.
But today, we got a package, that was already marked as delivered, yesterday at 8am in the morning. Ahem, we got it today at 11am. It said, yesterday, that we got it yesterday at 8am.
I just don't understand that one. Maybe it was delivered to the local post office? Who knows...

Had exactly the same thing happen to me today, Barry. Checked online for shipping status this morning, and it said it was delivered to me yesterday at 1:30 pm. Obviously, not true. Was thinking about calling the post office, when the mail came a few minutes ago. Lo and behold, there was my package.

I ordered an item 15 days ago that has track and confirm. I live in centeral Delaware. When I checked on the package last night it was in Harrington, DE which is 15 miles south. When I checked on my package today it just left Philadelphia, PA which is 57 miles north. I have received a package from India in less time than it has taken to deliver this item from within the states. Almost every package I receive via USPS is here prior to tracking info being available. The UPS tracking system is great!

It's 2007 and it still sucks! Actually they have no real "tracking" like UPS.

yes i to hate the usps tracking system, i have not recieve any updates since the 18 dec 07 and now im angrilly waiting... never choose usps the always late
Posted by: jeffrey | December 26, 2007 3:29 PM
My package says it was accepted at such-and-such place on the 16th of Jan. And still says that. Nothing about it being shipped out, nothing about it arriving anywhere and I still haven't received it.
UPS is SO much better, since they update it every time it's scanned.

I sent a package to SC via USPS and it shows on the website track and confirm that it was delivered on July 5, but the recipient has received nothing. The package is insured, I will try to file a claim. tsk tsk tsk
Posted by: sherry | July 7, 2008 4:45 AM
I have searched this on google to see if anyone else has experienced problems like i am... and i see many others have.
The tracking only states it was accepted and has not changed since, so i do not know where the package is at the moment or what is going on... I am not happy with this.
I order have packages sent from Japan quite often and i have never seen such a efficient postal service... Well that is compared to the UK and i assume some of the US postal services too.

Same thing here, I ordered a pkg from MI to SC and sender said the usps picked it up on the 18th still absolutely no scanning to present date. I have ordered 48 other pkgs ups and always the scanning is current and up to date... The tracking I was provided with brings back only this message:
The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on November 14, 2008 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.
With today's technology, this is completely unacceptable...shame on you USPS

This same thing is happening to me right now. I had a very sentimental custom framed delivered to me. USPS tracking says that it was delivered on November 28, 2008 but I have NOT received any packages. In fact a Dell computer was dropped at my house on the same day via Fed-X and nothing happened to it. I know no one stole it and am confident that the mail carrier lost it. My heart is breaking because the frame was in memory of my best friend who was killed in a car accident last month :(

same here what's with tracking if you don't know when it's going to arrive and the worst it's delivered before it leave the place of origin
can't figure that out
Posted by: juan perez | January 29, 2009 6:35 PM
Same thing happening to me but my package was supposed to be shipped 2nd day air mail. usps workers are prob just a bunch of convicts and/or deadbeats obviously just riding the system and could give 2 f's where the packages are going.
Posted by: joe the mechanic | February 13, 2009 12:49 PM
The USPS tracking system is a total joke, there is no tracking. What good is tracking if you have the package before anything is posted. This is why we pay taxes and have our postage raised every 6 months? Typical government snowjob.

I mailed from China to US a parcel with a passport, a credit card and several pieces of document paper. The parcel arrived in the US and entered the usps track and confirm which says it was reased from Customs on June 16, 2:07 pm. Since then there is no any further information. I'm so worried. What can happen to my parcel

this tracking system can go to hell. I ordered something from Amazon and according to their site, my package is in transit.
I checked USPS, and it's still stuck in the "The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on August 4, 2009 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date." BS. I'm assuming it'll be fully updated once it's been delivered.
USPS SUCKS!

The USPS is a governmental agency and despite the tons of money available and wasted!!, they are incapable of even mimicking a tracking system like FedEx or UPS. Total incompetence despite the fact that the mail is not that much handled by real human beings anymore. And now they are going to conquer health care and all its ramifications. Total clowns who couldn't hold a job at a burger house. God help us!!

God... Two packages was said to be delivered to my address based on the the tracking number on 9/1. However I did not receive any of the packages.........This is ridiculous I bought a book and an N router on Amazon, and something off from eBay, the total value is $240.
Now I am sitting at home being hopeless, desperate trying to locate the packages....I need my book for my class, and the router to speed up my internet......the stuff I got off from eBay is also a gift that I need to give in 2 days!! I a very frustrated with USPS...
In fact, one lady @ my post office was really a B@tch, when she finished serving a customer and it was my turn, I walked up to her and said "Hi." She responded " are you ignoring my sign?" "What sign?" I said. As I look and it said "next window." I immediately felt offended with her attitude, she could have said something else politely. How am I suppose to know you are leaving your position when you were serving the customer who was also in line ahead of me....

I am experiencing the exact same thing this very moment.
Waiting for an item to be shipped from USA to Australia. I am so sick of seeing the below paragraph....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on September 22, 2009 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been told (from the seller) that it has definitely been sent and they no longer have the item (obviously). How damn frustrating!! This situation not only make USPS look like idiots, but makes the buyer paranoid that the seller is telling the truth....
Thank you for the posts everyone......it's nice to know (and not nice) that others have gone through this trauma as well.

The postoffice really does not have a tracking number. They like to say they have a tracking number, but at best, they have "delivery confirmation" and it may not work. When you check the number and the postoffice says it was delivered at a certain time and on a certain day, that does not mean to the addressee. That only means it was delivered to the postoffice. When I drop packages off at the postoffice, I lose all control. I always pay for their so called tracking, but they may not scan the bar code for days. If ever. My customers sometimes try to track their package and will receive the below message from the PO.
Label/Receipt Number: LJ63 6356 798U S
Service(s): International Letter
Status: Electronic Shipping Info Received
The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on September 21, 2009 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later.
Addressees, usually believe the shipper just has not actually mailed the package. Some have been accused of making out the postage and then not taking the package to the postoffice. That is not so. The PO has it. They just don't scan it. By the way, don't ever laugh at the postal clerk that ask, "would you like to have tracking." If you do, your package will be sent, but it will more than likely go south, when you paid to have it go north. I mailed one package one time that took 2 months to arrive in middle America. I had another that took 30 days to arrive at the addressees door. The postoffice does not have a tracking system. At best, it is a "delivery confirmation" number.

It’s not the USPS “track & confirm” site, it’s the workers, who have to scan the items. And they get a shtload more mail than UPS & Fed-Ex, so they can't pull each and every item with a barcode off the pallet and scan it, sorry, they're working on an automatic system though, yes really.
Anywho, it seems to work 90% of the time, when I'm shipping out and receiving. I've noticed that some states are better at scanning than others.
Even if UPS does have the better Tracking system, it's not worth most of their prices. I always ship my packages with USPS as it has always been cheaper and faster. I hope the weekend deliveries never stop.

Printed a label with postage on the net on 10-03-09. Flat Rate Medium Size Box. Took it to the central post office myself and dropped it in the chute myself-- TO THIS DATE no record that it was ever received or delivered. AND NOW the track and confirm feature on the USPS web site says that it is not working--What gives???

I purchased a faucet from a store on Ebay. The faucet according to USPS Tracking system left Virginia on 10/15/2009. It was to be delivered on 10/19/2009, at a friends, Michigan address. I called the recipient to see if they had received the faucet. He stated that the postmaster rang his doorbell on the 19th, with a certified letter, and a handful of mail. He checked the mailbox after my call to see if perhaps he'd left it in the box, to no avail. I called the local post office today 10/21/2009, and they claimed that the package was delivered and that the carrier stated he handed my friend the package, (because it was too large to put in the mailbox) along with the certified letter, and other mail. I know for a fact that my friend would not lie about not receiving the package...and the USPS office said they would be investigating the claim. My friend and I are furious, because we know the package was not delivered to him, and that the carrier may have left it at another address.

On November 10th, my package was seen as "accepted". Still hasn't updated, and it's a package from East Pennsyvania to North East NJ. Are they joking, I'm counting on it getting here today! And it's a guitar, you can't just ignore one of them, such a big package.
When I bought a different guitar and it was shipped via UPS to me from North-Most Maine, it was able to reach my house in 2 days, via Ground. I will NEVER use USPS again when purchasing a guitar or anything else for that matter.

I purchased 2 items at the same time. LJ314591527US arrived approx. 2 weeks later and still hasn't been updated even ONCE. The second item was sent as the first item recieved. LJ523931502US, valued at approx $520usd ($570 australian). It has been scanned only once. I am FURIOUS!

Same here, bought something off Ebay, 2 weeks ago, had to message the shipper because the tracking has not been updated to even indicate that the package was mailed. The problem is that I have to open a dispute in a limited amount of time after the package is missing or I get screwed out of my purchase. This is a package coming from Texas to Canada. I didn't think I would ever say this, but I think Canada Post is better than another shipper.. USPS. So frustrating! Ebay should open it's own shipping dept.

I feel every ones pain.I live in Missouri. We usually get everything delivered to us fast being in the middle of the country.I am waiting on a package that has yet to show in the system.I called customer service ( a joke ) and gave the computer my tracking # and it said they picked it on the date the guy mailed my package and that is it.Yet,nothing shows on the web site. This is why I use FedEx.Less hassle and headaches. No wonder the U.S.P.S. is losing money.People have had enough of their laziness.

Sigh.
I found this thread searching for an answer to my question.
I am expecting 2 important packages, both incoming from the USPS. Both tracked show no updates whatsoever from the day they were received. One package was mailed about 16 days ago, and the second was mailed 8 days ago, and the city it's coming from is 4 hours from me.
USPS shipping makes me sick to my stomach. When I hear they are on hard times due to competition from UPS and FedEX, I smile. How long does it take to get your act together??

This is so frustrating!!!!! I shipped a priority medium flat rate box to a buyer on ebay who lives in Texas on the 15th. Today is the 18th and tracking is still saying "your package was accepted on December 15th 10:42am". I'm so pissed right now because I sent plenty of priority flat rate boxes out with delivery confirmation before, and i get updates of my package every step of the way. I'm just so angry!!! I can't hardly explain my self!!!!! Fucking incompetent USPS workers!!!!!!

yep... same here, and my money is on hold from paypal unitl delivery or positive feedback... for regular tracking, if it never posts, you can do an online claim, or go back to the post office you bought the services from, and you will get your money back. if the item is insured and it never gets delivered (according to the tracking system), i guess you can file a claim for that, too. even if it is delivered, without that signature, the post office has no way of confirming delivery and will pay the claim. whether or not thats kosher, i guess that's up to you... i bet the extra holiday mail doesn't help. i do wonder what would happen with paypal and filing a claim if the post offices only shows "electronic informaiton received." paying for the services at the window helps, but then you don't get the online discount. we'll see. good luck to all in the same situation.

After Reading this reviews I feel a little bit better. I ordered some things at Amazon and in the tracking system says that they were delivered to me a week ago. However I have no receive ANYTHING. I am praying for it to be just another mistake from the usps because I hate to waste my time and money!!!

USPS service is the best in my area of WA. State (never shipped or received a damage claim), but they do not have a tracking system that works. I sell/ship/receive eBay items weekly and continue to use there service because items always arrive undamaged. UPS has delivered me more damaged items than I want to remember. If undamaged, the boxes still arrive "beat-up" with UPS. UPS tracking is great, but at what cost? I will continue to use USPS in my area and hope that one day they will fix their frustrating tracking system. Then they would be golden. Just my 2 cents worth...

i had ordered something from ca to md i got the tracking info from the seller looked it up on usps nothing couple days go by then all the sudden its scanned at a sorting facility 30 miles away its been a week since, no package.

USPS Tracking states that they delivered my Express package today at 2:14pm; but its now 7pm and I've got nothing. I called and called the local post office and did not get an answer. Not surprised are you? I called USPS customer service and I was blown away by how rude and sarcastic this woman was. She insisted that the item was delived because tracking says it was. I made a claim and can expect to hear from someone within 2 days. I can't wait to hear what they are going to tell me. As far a UPS, I agree with the post on 2/10/10 about how they damage packages - so true! Fed Ex, never a problem!
Posted by: Cristi | February 17, 2010 7:03 PM
I ordered something from amazon on Feb14th and got and email the next day saying it shipped with a usps "tracking" number (haha if you can even call it that" so I went to the usps website and it said
Status: Arrived Shipping Partner Facility
Your item arrive Detailed Results:
Electronic Shipping Info Received, February 18, 2010
Arrived Shipping Partner Facility, February 15, 2010, 7:43 pm, CARSON, CA 90746
now how is it that they have had it for 3 days and just now got the electronic info I will never again use the usps for anything they must sit around with their thumbs up their a**es if you know what I mean, fed ex and ups charge more but its worth it to always know where your package is
so I gave it a few days and on the 18th I checked again and it now says

I sell on Ebay, and I use USPS all the time, and within the past month, NONE OF MY ITEMS have had their track and confirm link updated. Not a single one. I sent 3 express mail packages and although my customers have them, the links say "still in transit to location" EVEN THOUGH I MADE SURE THAT A SIGNATURE WAS REQUIRED!! I have to face it and realize that USPS needs to fix that, or I will have no choice but to move on ot UPS or FedEx
Posted by: Joshua | February 21, 2010 3:58 PM
I also sell on Ebay and sometimes use the tracking number for USPS. The last few items that I've sold and posted a tracking number never got updated, which I found as a waste of my .70 cents.
I also buy all the time and get tracking numbers for USPS. I recently bought some books from California and got it shipped to Louisiana. Saturday it was in California, and then Monday it was in Tennessee. It completely passed up Louisiana! What's up with that?
Posted by: sara | February 22, 2010 3:37 PM
Here is the thing with shipping. No, I do not work for the USPS, nor any shipping place.
Some of you guys are assuming the packages ship from CITY A to CITY B.
Thats not how it works.
Sara, its shipped to Tenessee, because apparently they dont have a specific CAR that ships from CALIFORNIA to LOUISIANA.
Its Broken down like a spider web.
As for the delivery conformation, It does suck some times. So far, only one of my packages (Going on now) has not been updated with information.
I have purchased over 20 items via ebay, and the USPS generally does a good job. Just remember, just because they recieved the "Electronic Shipping Info"
Doesnt mean its being shipped.
It gets shipped a day after the seller ships it if it is done in the afternoon. So I usually expect packages the last day of the estimated shipping + a few days. So put that into account before you start crying over stuff.

whatever dustin. I ordered a package from Britain and royal mail was just fine, but when they passed it to USPS i couldn't track it. on the 9th finally it shows it arrived in New York, but it said it was the 5th. Britain gave it to them the 5th and its the 11th now and it still hasn't changed. So I'm gonna "cry about it". There is no reason they cant update it. Its laziness thats all!

Hi, I recently bought something from ebay US and had it shipped by USPS First-Class Mail International to Perth, Australia. It has been 2 weeks and I still have not received the parcel! Any idea what should I do? The tracking thingy says the U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on March 1, 2010 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later. TIA!
