I remember when growing up in my parents home when I was younger. My parents built on an extension to their kitchen, which pushed back the kitchen several feet into the backyard. Soon after the extension was done, the same bird (at least I was told then that it was the same bird) kept on flying into that window, over and over again. I saw it a few times actually fly into the window. Often, one would hear a big bang, and look at the window and find nothing - but sometimes I saw it happen.
The same thing happens in my office building. For some reason, frequently enough, a bird flies directly into the window of my office. I am on the 3rd floor, pretty much in the middle of the office building. The building has been here for about 10 years, so I doubt it is one of those flight pattern things. Maybe it is just dark when I get here.
Did you know that windows are one of the leading causes of bird death? The picture above is from a bird that is recovering from a window accident, for real, click on it and it will show you a caption.
It's estimated that more than 90 million birds are killed each year as a result of hitting windows. Stopping the collisions is a matter of changing the birds' perception of what they see in the window.
So why do birds fly into windows, like my office building's windows? Good question, the answer is at WildBirds.com.
Tall buildings that relied heavily on large sheets of glass surface were especially hazardous. Birds see a reflection of the outdoors in the window and do not realize they are flying into a solid object. The end result is a stunned bird or a bird with a broken neck. During the spring, birds will appear to attack windows. They are really defending their territory from the "other" bird they see reflected in the window. They lunge at the "other bird" and peck it, trying to drive it away.
Preventing this is possible. eHow.com has an article on How to Prevent Birds From Flying Into Windows.
I never thought in a million years I would write about birds flying into my window, go figure.

I witnessed a female cardinal land on my window sill and then jump against the window glass continual, 7 to 10 times and then fly away. A few minutes later she would return and repeat the same procedure. This pattern continued for 45 minutes until I went outside and startled her. So far, she has not returned. I am curious about what would make her do this so if anyone has an answer, please let me know. Thanks.

Ive got a cardinal it looks like and some other orange bird with a large beak, any way, everymorning they smash into my room window waking me up. The only solution we could come up with is the 760 pumpmaster .177cal so if any one writes me on a solution those birds have seen their last window.

I have a cardinal (male) that flies into my windows every day starting about 6:00 am and going until I leave the house each morning. It is a huge annoyance. The back of my house is all windows and facing a heavily wooded area. I intentionally have no curtains at the windows, since there are no privacy issues. This cardinal makes a mess of my windows completely. I hope I find a way to fix this problem. I bought the house about a month ago and its not going away.

I have observed on a daily basis, that birds are dieing, as the glass windows are death traps for them.
We need to have a worldwide campaign, as we need to be the voice of our birds.
I am from Jamaica West Indies.

I have a female cardinal that pecks at my panel of glass beside the entry door, every morning and evening, this has been going on for the past 2 weeks. "just like clock work" Looked in the bushes and nearby tree for a nest and there's nothing there. I thought maybe it has something to do with the glass, its hard to look through with a diff. patteren. I also thought it could be my mom visiting me but she didn't have a cigerette in her mouth , so na >. she loved her birds.

I've been noticing this behavior with several different types of birds (cardinals, robins, mockingbirds, sparrows..) for the past 3-4 years. They are definitely not attacking their reflection since they fly UP from the bush in front of the window - so they are not on a level where they cast a reflection. Haven't found an answer, though I've done a lot of research looking for one. Haven't found a way to stop them either, unfortunately. They don't seem to be injured in any way by the pecking. Guess I'll just have to put up with smudged windows....
