Goodbye SEW - Hello SEL, MSNBot Verify, Matt Cutting, Yahoo Grandpa, Commons, YSM, Cache, Digg & Subpoena

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

The Search Engine Watch blog team said goodbye to SEW today and said hello to Search Engine Land. Microsoft released a method of verifying the authenticity of MSNBot. Yahoo!'s grandfathered bids will not longer be accepted. Matt Cutts and his spam tools were explored today. We looked at Google's common word report in sitemaps. Yahoo! Search Marketing is making some more changes. Digg versus search in editorial quality. Is the Google Cache chewing more of that spider food? And Yahoo! told Google no to a subpoena. That was last day in November.

A joke sent to me by a friend, it is part of a series of jokes, so maybe I'll share on each day.

When Stealing a Guitar, Do Not Hide Guitar in Pants!

I heard this on the radio in the morning and I was shaking my head back and forth in disbelief. Via SFGate.com, Owner: Man Tried to Hide Guitar in Pants.

Ok, if you try to steal a guitar, keep in mind, it is not like stealing batteries. It won't fit in your clothing properly!

Clifton Lovell, the owner of the store said,

The neck of the guitar was almost down to his knee and the back of the guitar was almost up to his neck. It wasn't hard to spot. There was no way he could sit down or get into the pickup.

Too funny!

Google Update, Cookie Spidering, gAnswers, AskCity, Name SEM, Y! AV, ATW, Pulse 10, & JackD

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

There was a possible Google Update, in the form of a data refresh last night. A new term named cookie spidering was discussed today in the AdWords forum. Google closed down Google Answers. Barry Diller is going to launch AskCity next week. A cute name that SEM game is out there. Yahoo!, Alta Vista and AllTheWeb are no longer on the same page. The Search Pulse version 10 is archived. ILoveJackDaniels is stepping down from Cre8asite Forums. That was November 29th.

Ask.com Skit Done Professionally

Remember the Ask.com Uses Fat, Hairy, Naked Man To Promote Search Engine entry I posted yesterday. So Gary Price put me in touch with the UK PR folks at Ask.com and I was able to ask them a few questions.

I only had one.

Did they use internal employees for the skit or was it done professionally.

Sadly, it was done by pros and they did not use internal staff members for the skit.

Next skit, I think should be done with Jim Lanzone, like he did in the past.

DUI Man Tries To Swallow Keys & A Town Named Bucksnort

Two weird stories via MSNBC this morning...

(1) DUI suspect tries to swallow keys, bites officer

Yea, a drunk driver in Moscow tried to swallow his keys after officers had to confiscate his car. Not sure what exactly swallowing the keys will do.

(2) On that same page, there is a story about "A town named Bucksnort." Yes, Bucksnort, is in Tennessee, they even have a Wikipedia page. Supposedly the town is so small that there "is no U.S. Census data for the location and there is no post office." Also, if for some reason you are passing through, the recommended place to eat is at Rudy's Restaurant right off of Hwy 40, Exit 152.

Winner of RB & SER Contest is Chris

The winning comment was by Chris at November 22, 2006 7:22 AM. Chris said;

what about the person who can take as many pictures of different people holding a piece of paper with your url on it over a 24 hour period? That would make a cool page on your site, many different people/ages/nationalities etc.

So the next contest will be just that.

Congrats Chris! Ben P. and Chris B. helped with the decision on the winner of the contest.

Almost 80 Active Buddies in My Instant Messenger List

huge-buddy-listOver the years I have accumulated hundreds and hundreds of instant messenger buddies. I have added new ones, deleted old ones, and so on. In fact, AIM used to (they still may) restrict the number of buddies you are allowed. So I sometimes have to delete old buddies to make room for new ones.

Today I looked over at my buddy list and saw it was scrolling. Now that is a bit crazy, since my screen is pretty big. I calculated the buddy list, it was about 1,100 pixels up and down. To make things worse, when I picked the style for my chat client, I picked one of the smallest fonts and styles you can pick. Why? I don't like having a scrolling list. But during mid-day times, my list still scrolls, it is about 80 active buddies that are needed to make the list scroll.

Honestly, I probably chat with about 15 people per day. So I am sure I can clean this list up to less than 40 people. But that, in itself, is a lot of work. Plus, you never know when you want to say hi to someone.

To annoy you, I included a full size image of the buddy list. Of course, I smugged out the names. It messed up the other entries on the front page, so I made it small, feel free to click on it to see the full size image.

I use Adium for my chat client, as an FYI.

gSpam, gTV, gAudio, gMobile, gEWOQ, gPhoto, Ask Fat Man, bCentral Gone, Yahoo China CEOless

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

Today we had a thread on Google serving up too much Web spam, Matt Cutts of Google replied to it. I also wrote about Google's plans for TV, and near term plans for audio ads. Google also complained about broadband restrictions on mobile devices. We found some Google evaluator strings in the search results. Google is giving out digital photo frames for the holidays. Ask.com promotes their engine with a fat and hairy man. Microsoft bCentral is not accepting any new business. Finally, Yahoo! China's president stepped down after 40 days on the job.

Search Engine Roundtable Topics:

Ask.com Uses Fat, Hairy, Naked Man To Promote Search Engine

One thing that can almost always make me laugh is a big fat man doing stupid things. That is exactly what Ask.com used in one of their latest promotions, in the UK. This YouTube video illustrates Ask.com's use of fat, naked humor to get people to use Ask.com. The Ask.com Challenge, as it is called, is to stop Sam (the fat man in the video) from dancing and stripping by searching at Ask.com.

Here is the video:

Oh, not only does searching at Ask stop Sam from dancing, it also can win you prizes.

Nice job Ask!

Matt Cutts Warns DaveN

mattcutts-daven.pngThis is funny, DaveN (David Naylor) described how to write a sneaky redirect and soon after, Matt Cutts of Google spanked him for it.

Matt said:

Sneaky JS redirects are definitely outside search engines' guidelines. DaveN, don’t just send people off to play in traffic and tell them to have fun; at least warn people of the risk that their site(s) will be removed or otherwise penalized.

Dave and Matt are buddies. But can this lead to a long and disturbing grudge between friends?

I doubt it. I think they are just messing with each other...

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I skipped the recap on Friday, since it was Thanksgiving, so if you want those topics, you will have to check the specific blogs for more info. As of today, I wrote about Google Sitemaps for Google News and a bug with their reporting. I looked at the Belgium legal woes. I showed how Google said Meta Tags can be useful. Jets Vs. Texans on 50 Yard Line

My brother-in-law hooked us up with tickets to the Jets game this Sunday. They played the Texans and pretty much took control of the game in the second half. Jets played well against a pretty bad team. I believe this was the first Jets game I have been at when they actually won. So that is a good feeling...

Here are two pictures I snapped on my Treo during the game.

I used the Flickr Slideshows generator for the pictures above. Kind worthless to use for only two pictures, but whatever.

The game was also a good opportunity to bond with the new family; father-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law. Not that we talked much during the game, the place was too loud for that. But we sat amongst thousands of other people in the middle of this row, about 30 yards up from the field. Not too bad.

Thanks AJ.

RB & SER Contest Winner TBA on Search Pulse

Like I said at SER, the contest winner for our most recent contest will be announced tomorrow night.

More details on that here.

Hawaii SEO, I have yet to send your bag out. Sorry for the delay. I will make sure to get to it this week before SES Chicago.

Favorite Holiday: Thanksgiving

TurkeyThanksgiving is my most favorite holiday. I am a huge turkey fan and that is what this day is about for me. Turkey! Football is a plus, but the Jets rarely play on Thanksgiving...

Gary Price sent me a link to the US Census Facts For Features: Thanksgiving Day - Nov. 23, 2006. Here are some highlights:

265 million
The preliminary estimate of turkeys raised in the United States in 2006. That’s up 3 percent from 2005. The turkeys produced in 2005 together weighed 7.2 billion pounds and were valued at $3.2 billion. (Source: USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service at )

45 million
The preliminary estimate of turkeys Minnesota expects to raise in 2006. The Gopher State is tops in turkey production. It is followed by North Carolina (37 million), Arkansas (30 million), Virginia (22.5 million), Missouri (21.5 million) and California (16 million). These six states together will probably account for about 65 percent of U.S. turkeys produced in 2006. (Source: USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service at )

$1.07
Cost per pound of a frozen whole turkey in December 2005. (Source: Upcoming Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2007.)

Thanks Gary!

We spent Thanksgiving this year at my sister-in-law, the in-laws came in. Some good Turkey...

Second Life Is Nuts!

piggyback.jpgSo I heard a lot of buzz about Second Life recently, so I decided to give it a try... It is this crazy virtual world. Like a MySpace on drugs.

You create your person and go from land to land exploring. You meet new people, talk to them live, you can play games, earn money, build things like ships, cars, planes weapons and so on.

It is crazy!

As I walked around I found ads for companies and stuff. I was looking specifically for the marketing aspect of this social network.

what is second life?

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 1,565,715 people from around the globe.

I am still learning but we can learn together. Join and make sure I refer you, my name in this virtual world is "RustyBrick Market" you don't get to pick any random last name... So when you join, use this link and look me up.

This is me watching some guy make a cop car.

Warning, this can be a huge time waster...

My Scooba In Action

As you know the other week I ordered the iRobot Scooba 5900, I got it Monday and charged it Monday night. Last night I gave it a test run. After following the instructions to set it up, for some reason it kept telling me to "Check Tank" in blue, meaning the tank is empty, but I filled it up. Anyway, after hitting the power button and trying again, the Scooba began its work. Here is a video of it in action...

The end result? It is a bit noisy, but it did a great job. I am very happy with it.

Dishwasher, washing machine, meet the Scooba!

Norway, Google Grads, Sitemaps, SEO Credits, Domain Registration SEO, MSNdude Missing and More

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I started today off trying to figure out if MSNdude is feeling ok or not, I am seriously worried. Then SEOs began debating if they should get site credit links or not. Google sent out an email about a AdSense webminar. Yahoo Search Marketing limits you to 20 campaigns. The sitemaps bug seems to be fixed now. Does domain registration length play a role in ranking. Norway is upset with Google News over copyright law. APIs help with peanut butter, according to Zawodny. Google is the job of choice for most tech graduates. 17 Year Old Creates Nuclear Fusion Reactor in Basement

Nuclear BombWhat were you doing between the ages of 15 and 17? Well, a kid in Rochester Hills, MI named Thiago Olson spent those years creating a Nuclear Fusion Reactor.

The Detroit Free Press reports;

In the basement of his parents' Oakland Township home, tucked away in an area most aren't privy to see, Thiago is exhausting his love of physics on a project that has taken him more than two years and 1,000 hours to research and build -- a large, intricate machine that , on a small scale, creates nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fusion -- when atoms are combined to create energy -- is "kind of like the holy grail of physics," he said.

Wikipedia has a ton of details on Nuclear Fusion and explains;

The only fusion reactions thus far produced by humans to achieve ignition are those which have been created in hydrogen bombs.

OK!

From Search Engine Watch to Search Engine Land

Search Engine LandSo all of you know by now that Danny is starting a new site named Search Engine Land, the logo to the right, is one of the logos people are voting on, claim your vote. In any event, the community reaction was both surprising and very touching for me, and I suspect also for Danny and Chris.

What was surprising? Well, Danny clearly informed the public that both Chris and I are going along with Danny to Search Engine Land from Search Engine Watch - this was not held back. But for some reason people did not learn about this until I commented at Threadwatch saying and then Lisa posted Will SEW survive without Danny, Chris and Barry?

Lisa's comments are very touching. As I explained, I never signed a contract with Incisive to write at Search Engine Watch. I was a month to month type of writer. Honestly, a long term contract was never offered, but I never requested it. Chris's contract ends the end of this year, and Danny's ends the end of this month - really soon.

Lisa wrote:

It’s unbelievable to me that Barry Schwartz wasn’t contracted for his work at Search Engine Watch. How can a company survive without at least thinking of the long term, especially for someone with as much authority and industry respect as Barry? Though I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised, they did let Danny walk away uncompensated.

Wow - thank you Lisa, that means a ton!

But get this, Incisive has not once called me or emailed me about my future plans after Danny made his announcement. I have yet to hear from them, even up to the time of writing this post. I guess they assumed that Chris and I would stay on at SEW. You know what they say about assuming things...

But the reaction in the community is that Search Engine Watch will not survive without us. I don't know about that - it is not for me to say. More comments on that from Nathan Weinberg and other comments via Google Blog Search and Google News Search.

Ok, so what if Incisive made me an offer to stay on, what if???

I think it would be suicide for me.

(1) Who am I to fill the shoes of Danny Sullivan?
(2) I have a full time job already, I don't have the time to run SEW.
(3) I feel that anyone, outside of Chris Sherman, who takes on this role, will be hated by the SEM community for attempting.

So Search Engine Land, I suspect Danny and I continue as we have been doing at SEW. Chris is going to be blogging more often, which is going to be a lot of fun. And I believe Danny has some more news that may shock some of you. So make sure to subscribe to the Search Engine Land feed.

This is going to be a ton of fun!

RB/SER Contest, GOOG Update, YPN Compliance, Yahoo Jobs, Peanut Butter, Supp Confusion & More

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I am running a new contest where you can win an RustyBrick bag with some Search Engine Roundtable Yo Yos. Google AdWords is still having issues with login difficulties. People are possibly more confused about Google's supplemental index. Yahoo! is like peanut butter, well, not really. Microsoft has banned sites for participating in link exchanges. There is a Google update under way, possibly. Yahoo! launched compliance manager within the YPN portal. Google is testing map links under snippets. Yahoo! made a deal with 176 newspapers. Yahoo! has fully integrated Answers into Search. It is good to be back.

The Bloglines Plumber

plumberI am a heavy Bloglines user and when I see The Bloglines Plumber I get worried. Over the weekend, The Bloglines Plumber was very active and he is popping up very often this morning, but thankfully, I was able to get to my feeds. I am very very dependent on Bloglines, so it scares me to think that it can be down or go offline. I am honestly willing to pay for a service like this, if it means very little downtime and that it won't go away.

Also, it is not great for hosting blogs at. We know Blogger has their share of downtime, so does Bloglines. :)

Who is the plumber? Well, he is the guy who comes up when Bloglines has a technical issue.

He says;

Hi, I'm the Bloglines Plumber. Bloglines is down for a little fixer upper. We will be back shortly. Bloglines will be all better when I'm done with it.

Thanks,
The Bloglines Plumber

Contest: Win a RustyBrick Bag Filled With Search Engine Roundtable YoYos

RustyBrick OGIO BackHawaii SEO came up with a great contest idea, winning himself a RustyBrick bag filled with RustyBrick Bag filled with Search Engine Roundtable YoYos.

Now you can win the same thing... How?

I think I will keep this contest open until Friday the 24th of November. So think of your ideas and submit them. If someone posts the same idea, I will pick the first one that posted it. You can submit as many ideas as you like, so yes, multiple entries for this contest is allowed.

Good luck and congrats to Hawaii SEO for this idea and for winning an RB bag filled with many SER YoYos. Hawaii SEO, email me with your address info...

More Search Engine Roundtable YoYos

I ran out of YoYos at this past PubCon, so I ordered 300 more Search Engine Roundtable YoYos. If you haven't seen the YoYos, I wrote about them here and I have a quick video here. Here is a picture of the 300 yoyos, yes, in my conference room.

Yes, we did get around to cleaning up our junk food. Next project is getting rid of these bags.

Flight Back from Vegas to New York

I figured, since I wrote about my experience flying to Vegas I thought I share my trip back. I got to the airport about 1.5 hours prior to my scheduled departure time. I got through security and walked to the Continental desk and asked if they have any earlier flights to NY, being that my flight was already delayed. She said, actually, yes, that line of people are all boarding now, they were delayed. So she got me on that plane. I didn't have time to blog from the airport, since I had to board right away. I wanted to post SEW headlines and stuff, so now I am way behind.

I got a seat in the 14th isle, exit row. I waited for them to call my row and then boarded the plane. I get on and see the whole plane is packed, and that there are no overhead compartments available by my seat. So I walk back about 7 aisles and put my bag up there.

Then a woman gets on and she was sitting next to me. She had to put her bags back 7 aisles as well, but she was pretty upset about it. In any event, after trying to stuff her bags under her chair (there was no way it would fit) she gave up and put her bag in the back. She sits down and I told her how I was lucky, I caught this delayed flight, so I should be in early. She said, how did I get an exit row, when she asked for one, they told her none were available. Now obviously, since I got my ticket while boarding the plane, there was an exit row available. So she was a bit mad at me, but it wasn't my fault - so I didn't take it personally.

We take off and climb into the air. Oh, during this, the VP of LivePerson is chatting with me. He is a frum Jewish guy, he started HumanClick in the US and LivePerson bought him, nice guy. The seatbelt light goes off, people get up to get their stuff. You know how things shift in the overhead compartments during take off and landing? Well they do. Some guy opens the compartment over my head, and bam, a thing hits me and the woman next to me (the woman who I stole her seat) on our heads. She, wasn't happy, I ignored it even happened.

The movie starts, I try to plug my headset into the jack, but something is blocking it. I assume some kid stuck something in the holes. But I was able to hear the sound if I held the plug into the jack at an angle. So I sat the next five hours or so, holding my headset into the jack.

Fast forward 5 hours, we are about to land. But then the pilot says, they put us in a holding pattern. Two minutes later, we are back, we should land soon. We land, and roll to the gate.

Now, I see the woman on my left antsy to get up and get her bag. She asks me to get up before we hit the gate and before the seatbelt sign is turned off. I grant her wish and she gets yelled at by the flight attendants. But then this woman from the back of the plane keeps coming forward, she is an older lady, dancing in the aisle saying, "I got to pee, I got to pee." The flight attendants yell at her also, and the passengers all clap, after she is forced to sit. I kinda felt bad for her, but she was warned by the pilot to pee before landing.

Anyway, we pull to the gate, seatbelt light goes off and the woman on my left, jets to her bags. That is the last I saw of her, hope she made it out. The woman who had to pee, kept dancing and some people let her through. I hope she made it as well.

I waited until I was able to get 7 aisles back to get my bag.

I caught my car service and drove the hour or so home. I went to sleep about 2am.

Got a lot to catch up on....

Suspicious Pictures From Hugh Hefner's Vegas Suit in Palms Hotel

As I reported at the Search Engine Roundtable, Yahoo! Rents Out Hugh Hefner's Sky Villa in Palms Hotel but what really happened? Here is a run down of some candid images I took of some people who attended this event.

So I enter the suite:

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

I walk upstairs and find Rand cheating on his girlfriend!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

But then he gets me and Andrew to jump on the bed with him, so I figure, he is not cheating on his girlfriend, he just wants to create some link bait...

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

But then I walk into the massage room and see him in this position!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

Dirty dirty dirty Rand! You better clean off in Hugh's shower!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

So then I walk back down the stairs, a bit stunned from what I experienced upstairs...

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

And I see ShoeMoney staring at one of the attractive looking bartenders. Shoe! You're married!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

Nah, he was checking out the beer he was getting.

I have more pictures at Flickr, too funny.

This is me blogging live right now in a session at PubCon.

The Seat Back on the Airplane

So a lot of traveling posts over the past 24 hours... We finally got on the plane last night and I got my seat, the second we take off, the guy in front of me slams his seat back into me. I had zero room to take out my computer, and I really wanted to play Halo. So, what I did was take my computer, fold it most of the way, and opened it like a V, so the base of the computer was up in the air. Kinda like < but slanted up. I played about an hour of Halo until it got too annoying to play.

I just don't understand it. Why can't the person look back and ask if they can place their seat back. I would have said, of course, but not to ask, not to look? I would never.

Do You Say; "Have a Safe Flight" To a Pilot?

So I am still here in the airport and a pilot was sitting next to me. He was complaining that the speed of the airport wifi was too slow, I showed him the speed of my connection....

In any event, he was flying to Scotland and he was packing up.

I was wondering, as he was packing up, if I say, "have a safe flight," to this pilot.

I mean, he is the one flying the plane and maybe, he would be insulted if I said that.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be insulted if someone told me to drive carefully, before I drove somewhere.

Gary Price and I are IMing and he suggested I just say, "have a good trip." :-)

Live Blogging Over Verizon Treo Connection on MacBook Pro

This is the first time I was able to connect via my Treo to my MacBook Pro over the Verizon Wireless network. So the Treo USB Modem Worked. It is a sigh of relief, since I am now delayed 1 hour and 20 minutes due to "Awaiting arrival of crew." Feels like there hasn't been a flight I have taken recently that was not delayed. Is it just me?
