Goodbye SEW - Hello SEL, MSNBot Verify, Matt Cutting, Yahoo Grandpa, Commons, YSM, Cache, Digg & Subpoena

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

The Search Engine Watch blog team said goodbye to SEW today and said hello to Search Engine Land. Microsoft released a method of verifying the authenticity of MSNBot. Yahoo!'s grandfathered bids will not longer be accepted. Matt Cutts and his spam tools were explored today. We looked at Google's common word report in sitemaps. Yahoo! Search Marketing is making some more changes. Digg versus search in editorial quality. Is the Google Cache chewing more of that spider food? And Yahoo! told Google no to a subpoena. That was last day in November.

A joke sent to me by a friend, it is part of a series of jokes, so maybe I'll share on each day.

When Stealing a Guitar, Do Not Hide Guitar in Pants!

I heard this on the radio in the morning and I was shaking my head back and forth in disbelief. Via SFGate.com, Owner: Man Tried to Hide Guitar in Pants.

Ok, if you try to steal a guitar, keep in mind, it is not like stealing batteries. It won't fit in your clothing properly!

Clifton Lovell, the owner of the store said,

The neck of the guitar was almost down to his knee and the back of the guitar was almost up to his neck. It wasn't hard to spot. There was no way he could sit down or get into the pickup.

Too funny!

Google Update, Cookie Spidering, gAnswers, AskCity, Name SEM, Y! AV, ATW, Pulse 10, & JackD

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

There was a possible Google Update, in the form of a data refresh last night. A new term named cookie spidering was discussed today in the AdWords forum. Google closed down Google Answers. Barry Diller is going to launch AskCity next week. A cute name that SEM game is out there. Yahoo!, Alta Vista and AllTheWeb are no longer on the same page. The Search Pulse version 10 is archived. ILoveJackDaniels is stepping down from Cre8asite Forums. That was November 29th.

Ask.com Skit Done Professionally

Remember the Ask.com Uses Fat, Hairy, Naked Man To Promote Search Engine entry I posted yesterday. So Gary Price put me in touch with the UK PR folks at Ask.com and I was able to ask them a few questions.

I only had one.

Did they use internal employees for the skit or was it done professionally.

Sadly, it was done by pros and they did not use internal staff members for the skit.

Next skit, I think should be done with Jim Lanzone, like he did in the past.

DUI Man Tries To Swallow Keys & A Town Named Bucksnort

Two weird stories via MSNBC this morning...

(1) DUI suspect tries to swallow keys, bites officer

Yea, a drunk driver in Moscow tried to swallow his keys after officers had to confiscate his car. Not sure what exactly swallowing the keys will do.

(2) On that same page, there is a story about "A town named Bucksnort." Yes, Bucksnort, is in Tennessee, they even have a Wikipedia page. Supposedly the town is so small that there "is no U.S. Census data for the location and there is no post office." Also, if for some reason you are passing through, the recommended place to eat is at Rudy's Restaurant right off of Hwy 40, Exit 152.

Winner of RB & SER Contest is Chris

The winning comment was by Chris at November 22, 2006 7:22 AM. Chris said;

what about the person who can take as many pictures of different people holding a piece of paper with your url on it over a 24 hour period? That would make a cool page on your site, many different people/ages/nationalities etc.

So the next contest will be just that.

Congrats Chris! Ben P. and Chris B. helped with the decision on the winner of the contest.

Almost 80 Active Buddies in My Instant Messenger List

huge-buddy-listOver the years I have accumulated hundreds and hundreds of instant messenger buddies. I have added new ones, deleted old ones, and so on. In fact, AIM used to (they still may) restrict the number of buddies you are allowed. So I sometimes have to delete old buddies to make room for new ones.

Today I looked over at my buddy list and saw it was scrolling. Now that is a bit crazy, since my screen is pretty big. I calculated the buddy list, it was about 1,100 pixels up and down. To make things worse, when I picked the style for my chat client, I picked one of the smallest fonts and styles you can pick. Why? I don't like having a scrolling list. But during mid-day times, my list still scrolls, it is about 80 active buddies that are needed to make the list scroll.

Honestly, I probably chat with about 15 people per day. So I am sure I can clean this list up to less than 40 people. But that, in itself, is a lot of work. Plus, you never know when you want to say hi to someone.

To annoy you, I included a full size image of the buddy list. Of course, I smugged out the names. It messed up the other entries on the front page, so I made it small, feel free to click on it to see the full size image.

I use Adium for my chat client, as an FYI.

gSpam, gTV, gAudio, gMobile, gEWOQ, gPhoto, Ask Fat Man, bCentral Gone, Yahoo China CEOless

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

Today we had a thread on Google serving up too much Web spam, Matt Cutts of Google replied to it. I also wrote about Google's plans for TV, and near term plans for audio ads. Google also complained about broadband restrictions on mobile devices. We found some Google evaluator strings in the search results. Google is giving out digital photo frames for the holidays. Ask.com promotes their engine with a fat and hairy man. Microsoft bCentral is not accepting any new business. Finally, Yahoo! China's president stepped down after 40 days on the job.

Search Engine Roundtable Topics:

Ask.com Uses Fat, Hairy, Naked Man To Promote Search Engine

One thing that can almost always make me laugh is a big fat man doing stupid things. That is exactly what Ask.com used in one of their latest promotions, in the UK. This YouTube video illustrates Ask.com's use of fat, naked humor to get people to use Ask.com. The Ask.com Challenge, as it is called, is to stop Sam (the fat man in the video) from dancing and stripping by searching at Ask.com.

Here is the video:

Oh, not only does searching at Ask stop Sam from dancing, it also can win you prizes.

Nice job Ask!

Matt Cutts Warns DaveN

mattcutts-daven.pngThis is funny, DaveN (David Naylor) described how to write a sneaky redirect and soon after, Matt Cutts of Google spanked him for it.

Matt said:

Sneaky JS redirects are definitely outside search engines' guidelines. DaveN, don’t just send people off to play in traffic and tell them to have fun; at least warn people of the risk that their site(s) will be removed or otherwise penalized.

Dave and Matt are buddies. But can this lead to a long and disturbing grudge between friends?

I doubt it. I think they are just messing with each other...

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I skipped the recap on Friday, since it was Thanksgiving, so if you want those topics, you will have to check the specific blogs for more info. As of today, I wrote about Google Sitemaps for Google News and a bug with their reporting. I looked at the Belgium legal woes. I showed how Google said Meta Tags can be useful. Jets Vs. Texans on 50 Yard Line

My brother-in-law hooked us up with tickets to the Jets game this Sunday. They played the Texans and pretty much took control of the game in the second half. Jets played well against a pretty bad team. I believe this was the first Jets game I have been at when they actually won. So that is a good feeling...

Here are two pictures I snapped on my Treo during the game.

I used the Flickr Slideshows generator for the pictures above. Kind worthless to use for only two pictures, but whatever.

The game was also a good opportunity to bond with the new family; father-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law. Not that we talked much during the game, the place was too loud for that. But we sat amongst thousands of other people in the middle of this row, about 30 yards up from the field. Not too bad.

Thanks AJ.

RB & SER Contest Winner TBA on Search Pulse

Like I said at SER, the contest winner for our most recent contest will be announced tomorrow night.

More details on that here.

Hawaii SEO, I have yet to send your bag out. Sorry for the delay. I will make sure to get to it this week before SES Chicago.

Favorite Holiday: Thanksgiving

TurkeyThanksgiving is my most favorite holiday. I am a huge turkey fan and that is what this day is about for me. Turkey! Football is a plus, but the Jets rarely play on Thanksgiving...

Gary Price sent me a link to the US Census Facts For Features: Thanksgiving Day - Nov. 23, 2006. Here are some highlights:

265 million
The preliminary estimate of turkeys raised in the United States in 2006. That’s up 3 percent from 2005. The turkeys produced in 2005 together weighed 7.2 billion pounds and were valued at $3.2 billion. (Source: USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service at )

45 million
The preliminary estimate of turkeys Minnesota expects to raise in 2006. The Gopher State is tops in turkey production. It is followed by North Carolina (37 million), Arkansas (30 million), Virginia (22.5 million), Missouri (21.5 million) and California (16 million). These six states together will probably account for about 65 percent of U.S. turkeys produced in 2006. (Source: USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service at )

$1.07
Cost per pound of a frozen whole turkey in December 2005. (Source: Upcoming Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2007.)

Thanks Gary!

We spent Thanksgiving this year at my sister-in-law, the in-laws came in. Some good Turkey...

Second Life Is Nuts!

piggyback.jpgSo I heard a lot of buzz about Second Life recently, so I decided to give it a try... It is this crazy virtual world. Like a MySpace on drugs.

You create your person and go from land to land exploring. You meet new people, talk to them live, you can play games, earn money, build things like ships, cars, planes weapons and so on.

It is crazy!

As I walked around I found ads for companies and stuff. I was looking specifically for the marketing aspect of this social network.

what is second life?

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 1,565,715 people from around the globe.

I am still learning but we can learn together. Join and make sure I refer you, my name in this virtual world is "RustyBrick Market" you don't get to pick any random last name... So when you join, use this link and look me up.

This is me watching some guy make a cop car.

Warning, this can be a huge time waster...

My Scooba In Action

As you know the other week I ordered the iRobot Scooba 5900, I got it Monday and charged it Monday night. Last night I gave it a test run. After following the instructions to set it up, for some reason it kept telling me to "Check Tank" in blue, meaning the tank is empty, but I filled it up. Anyway, after hitting the power button and trying again, the Scooba began its work. Here is a video of it in action...

The end result? It is a bit noisy, but it did a great job. I am very happy with it.

Dishwasher, washing machine, meet the Scooba!

Norway, Google Grads, Sitemaps, SEO Credits, Domain Registration SEO, MSNdude Missing and More

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I started today off trying to figure out if MSNdude is feeling ok or not, I am seriously worried. Then SEOs began debating if they should get site credit links or not. Google sent out an email about a AdSense webminar. Yahoo Search Marketing limits you to 20 campaigns. The sitemaps bug seems to be fixed now. Does domain registration length play a role in ranking. Norway is upset with Google News over copyright law. APIs help with peanut butter, according to Zawodny. Google is the job of choice for most tech graduates. 17 Year Old Creates Nuclear Fusion Reactor in Basement

Nuclear BombWhat were you doing between the ages of 15 and 17? Well, a kid in Rochester Hills, MI named Thiago Olson spent those years creating a Nuclear Fusion Reactor.

The Detroit Free Press reports;

In the basement of his parents' Oakland Township home, tucked away in an area most aren't privy to see, Thiago is exhausting his love of physics on a project that has taken him more than two years and 1,000 hours to research and build -- a large, intricate machine that , on a small scale, creates nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fusion -- when atoms are combined to create energy -- is "kind of like the holy grail of physics," he said.

Wikipedia has a ton of details on Nuclear Fusion and explains;

The only fusion reactions thus far produced by humans to achieve ignition are those which have been created in hydrogen bombs.

OK!

From Search Engine Watch to Search Engine Land

Search Engine LandSo all of you know by now that Danny is starting a new site named Search Engine Land, the logo to the right, is one of the logos people are voting on, claim your vote. In any event, the community reaction was both surprising and very touching for me, and I suspect also for Danny and Chris.

What was surprising? Well, Danny clearly informed the public that both Chris and I are going along with Danny to Search Engine Land from Search Engine Watch - this was not held back. But for some reason people did not learn about this until I commented at Threadwatch saying and then Lisa posted Will SEW survive without Danny, Chris and Barry?

Lisa's comments are very touching. As I explained, I never signed a contract with Incisive to write at Search Engine Watch. I was a month to month type of writer. Honestly, a long term contract was never offered, but I never requested it. Chris's contract ends the end of this year, and Danny's ends the end of this month - really soon.

Lisa wrote:

It’s unbelievable to me that Barry Schwartz wasn’t contracted for his work at Search Engine Watch. How can a company survive without at least thinking of the long term, especially for someone with as much authority and industry respect as Barry? Though I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised, they did let Danny walk away uncompensated.

Wow - thank you Lisa, that means a ton!

But get this, Incisive has not once called me or emailed me about my future plans after Danny made his announcement. I have yet to hear from them, even up to the time of writing this post. I guess they assumed that Chris and I would stay on at SEW. You know what they say about assuming things...

But the reaction in the community is that Search Engine Watch will not survive without us. I don't know about that - it is not for me to say. More comments on that from Nathan Weinberg and other comments via Google Blog Search and Google News Search.

Ok, so what if Incisive made me an offer to stay on, what if???

I think it would be suicide for me.

(1) Who am I to fill the shoes of Danny Sullivan?
(2) I have a full time job already, I don't have the time to run SEW.
(3) I feel that anyone, outside of Chris Sherman, who takes on this role, will be hated by the SEM community for attempting.

So Search Engine Land, I suspect Danny and I continue as we have been doing at SEW. Chris is going to be blogging more often, which is going to be a lot of fun. And I believe Danny has some more news that may shock some of you. So make sure to subscribe to the Search Engine Land feed.

This is going to be a ton of fun!

RB/SER Contest, GOOG Update, YPN Compliance, Yahoo Jobs, Peanut Butter, Supp Confusion & More

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I am running a new contest where you can win an RustyBrick bag with some Search Engine Roundtable Yo Yos. Google AdWords is still having issues with login difficulties. People are possibly more confused about Google's supplemental index. Yahoo! is like peanut butter, well, not really. Microsoft has banned sites for participating in link exchanges. There is a Google update under way, possibly. Yahoo! launched compliance manager within the YPN portal. Google is testing map links under snippets. Yahoo! made a deal with 176 newspapers. Yahoo! has fully integrated Answers into Search. It is good to be back.

The Bloglines Plumber

plumberI am a heavy Bloglines user and when I see The Bloglines Plumber I get worried. Over the weekend, The Bloglines Plumber was very active and he is popping up very often this morning, but thankfully, I was able to get to my feeds. I am very very dependent on Bloglines, so it scares me to think that it can be down or go offline. I am honestly willing to pay for a service like this, if it means very little downtime and that it won't go away.

Also, it is not great for hosting blogs at. We know Blogger has their share of downtime, so does Bloglines. :)

Who is the plumber? Well, he is the guy who comes up when Bloglines has a technical issue.

He says;

Hi, I'm the Bloglines Plumber. Bloglines is down for a little fixer upper. We will be back shortly. Bloglines will be all better when I'm done with it.

Thanks,
The Bloglines Plumber

Contest: Win a RustyBrick Bag Filled With Search Engine Roundtable YoYos

RustyBrick OGIO BackHawaii SEO came up with a great contest idea, winning himself a RustyBrick bag filled with RustyBrick Bag filled with Search Engine Roundtable YoYos.

Now you can win the same thing... How?

I think I will keep this contest open until Friday the 24th of November. So think of your ideas and submit them. If someone posts the same idea, I will pick the first one that posted it. You can submit as many ideas as you like, so yes, multiple entries for this contest is allowed.

Good luck and congrats to Hawaii SEO for this idea and for winning an RB bag filled with many SER YoYos. Hawaii SEO, email me with your address info...

More Search Engine Roundtable YoYos

I ran out of YoYos at this past PubCon, so I ordered 300 more Search Engine Roundtable YoYos. If you haven't seen the YoYos, I wrote about them here and I have a quick video here. Here is a picture of the 300 yoyos, yes, in my conference room.

Yes, we did get around to cleaning up our junk food. Next project is getting rid of these bags.

Flight Back from Vegas to New York

I figured, since I wrote about my experience flying to Vegas I thought I share my trip back. I got to the airport about 1.5 hours prior to my scheduled departure time. I got through security and walked to the Continental desk and asked if they have any earlier flights to NY, being that my flight was already delayed. She said, actually, yes, that line of people are all boarding now, they were delayed. So she got me on that plane. I didn't have time to blog from the airport, since I had to board right away. I wanted to post SEW headlines and stuff, so now I am way behind.

I got a seat in the 14th isle, exit row. I waited for them to call my row and then boarded the plane. I get on and see the whole plane is packed, and that there are no overhead compartments available by my seat. So I walk back about 7 aisles and put my bag up there.

Then a woman gets on and she was sitting next to me. She had to put her bags back 7 aisles as well, but she was pretty upset about it. In any event, after trying to stuff her bags under her chair (there was no way it would fit) she gave up and put her bag in the back. She sits down and I told her how I was lucky, I caught this delayed flight, so I should be in early. She said, how did I get an exit row, when she asked for one, they told her none were available. Now obviously, since I got my ticket while boarding the plane, there was an exit row available. So she was a bit mad at me, but it wasn't my fault - so I didn't take it personally.

We take off and climb into the air. Oh, during this, the VP of LivePerson is chatting with me. He is a frum Jewish guy, he started HumanClick in the US and LivePerson bought him, nice guy. The seatbelt light goes off, people get up to get their stuff. You know how things shift in the overhead compartments during take off and landing? Well they do. Some guy opens the compartment over my head, and bam, a thing hits me and the woman next to me (the woman who I stole her seat) on our heads. She, wasn't happy, I ignored it even happened.

The movie starts, I try to plug my headset into the jack, but something is blocking it. I assume some kid stuck something in the holes. But I was able to hear the sound if I held the plug into the jack at an angle. So I sat the next five hours or so, holding my headset into the jack.

Fast forward 5 hours, we are about to land. But then the pilot says, they put us in a holding pattern. Two minutes later, we are back, we should land soon. We land, and roll to the gate.

Now, I see the woman on my left antsy to get up and get her bag. She asks me to get up before we hit the gate and before the seatbelt sign is turned off. I grant her wish and she gets yelled at by the flight attendants. But then this woman from the back of the plane keeps coming forward, she is an older lady, dancing in the aisle saying, "I got to pee, I got to pee." The flight attendants yell at her also, and the passengers all clap, after she is forced to sit. I kinda felt bad for her, but she was warned by the pilot to pee before landing.

Anyway, we pull to the gate, seatbelt light goes off and the woman on my left, jets to her bags. That is the last I saw of her, hope she made it out. The woman who had to pee, kept dancing and some people let her through. I hope she made it as well.

I waited until I was able to get 7 aisles back to get my bag.

I caught my car service and drove the hour or so home. I went to sleep about 2am.

Got a lot to catch up on....

Suspicious Pictures From Hugh Hefner's Vegas Suit in Palms Hotel

As I reported at the Search Engine Roundtable, Yahoo! Rents Out Hugh Hefner's Sky Villa in Palms Hotel but what really happened? Here is a run down of some candid images I took of some people who attended this event.

So I enter the suite:

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

I walk upstairs and find Rand cheating on his girlfriend!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

But then he gets me and Andrew to jump on the bed with him, so I figure, he is not cheating on his girlfriend, he just wants to create some link bait...

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

But then I walk into the massage room and see him in this position!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

Dirty dirty dirty Rand! You better clean off in Hugh's shower!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

So then I walk back down the stairs, a bit stunned from what I experienced upstairs...

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

And I see ShoeMoney staring at one of the attractive looking bartenders. Shoe! You're married!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2006

Nah, he was checking out the beer he was getting.

I have more pictures at Flickr, too funny.

This is me blogging live right now in a session at PubCon.

The Seat Back on the Airplane

So a lot of traveling posts over the past 24 hours... We finally got on the plane last night and I got my seat, the second we take off, the guy in front of me slams his seat back into me. I had zero room to take out my computer, and I really wanted to play Halo. So, what I did was take my computer, fold it most of the way, and opened it like a V, so the base of the computer was up in the air. Kinda like < but slanted up. I played about an hour of Halo until it got too annoying to play.

I just don't understand it. Why can't the person look back and ask if they can place their seat back. I would have said, of course, but not to ask, not to look? I would never.

Do You Say; "Have a Safe Flight" To a Pilot?

So I am still here in the airport and a pilot was sitting next to me. He was complaining that the speed of the airport wifi was too slow, I showed him the speed of my connection....

In any event, he was flying to Scotland and he was packing up.

I was wondering, as he was packing up, if I say, "have a safe flight," to this pilot.

I mean, he is the one flying the plane and maybe, he would be insulted if I said that.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be insulted if someone told me to drive carefully, before I drove somewhere.

Gary Price and I are IMing and he suggested I just say, "have a good trip." :-)

Live Blogging Over Verizon Treo Connection on MacBook Pro

This is the first time I was able to connect via my Treo to my MacBook Pro over the Verizon Wireless network. So the Treo USB Modem Worked. It is a sigh of relief, since I am now delayed 1 hour and 20 minutes due to "Awaiting arrival of crew." Feels like there hasn't been a flight I have taken recently that was not delayed. Is it just me?

SEMPO, Tabriz, Google Cell Phones, YPN Execs, Google Video, Sitemaps, Amazon PPC, & More

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

Felt like a slow forum day today, with only tips on how to find if you are banned on specific search engines, a look at Amazon's PPC engine and a weird thing with Google Sitemaps. Outside of that, SEMPO released a new survey. Iran blasted Google over a Google Video upload. Schmidt said we should all have free cell phones. Google updated their Sitemaps 3rd party generation tools page. YPN lost some executives. And Google Video got some updates.

Oh, tomorrow's Search Pulse is cancelled.

Just Ordered iRobot Scooba 5900 on Woot

irobot-scooba-5900Woot has an awesome deal on the iRobot Scooba 5900 today. So after wanting this puppy for a while, I finally ordered it. Yea, it is like a dog that cleans, but it doesnt bark or poop either, I guess if it did poop, it would clean it up after.

The iRobot Scooba will hopefully save me and my wife about two hours per week of cleaning our hardwood floors.

This device goes around your rooms, vacuums up most small dirt (not big stuff), then pours down some cleaning solution, scrubs the floor with it and then sucks up that wet water (as much as it can).

The iRobot Scooba reportedly can't get into the corners, so those will require manual work. But out of a 100+ reviews at Amazon, with a 4 of 5 rating, I think I will give this puppy a try.

I'll update you guys down the road, letting you know how this thing is doing its job.

Eating Kosher at Search Conferences

krestlogo.gifMost of you know, I am all over all the search marketing conferences. From SES San Jose to SES New York and SES Latino all the way to WebmasterWorld's PubCon Vegas. Heck, I even went to SES Sweden in 2004. But often, the places I go, do not have kosher food available or nearby.

That is typically why, the only times you see me going out for dinner with folks is in NYC. Chris Boggs, invited me out for dinner in Las Vegas (yes, they have a few kosher places) but it is typically sometimes easier for me to bring frozen meals and eat in the room.

So for Vegas, I bought some meals to go, and stuffed them in my carry on. I typically go with Noah's Ark travel meals but since it is in Teaneck, NJ, it takes me about 30 minutes to pick up those meals. But local place named Meal Mart has a similar deal, in fact, they have a web site named Kosher Meals To Go. So I walked into the store and they packaged, fresh for me, two Grilled Chicken Breast meals for me, with two sides of potatoes.

So I have two meals for the road, frozen, now sitting in my carry on, in my car, for the trip.

What is all this Kosher stuff? I didn't confirm everything the Wikipedia had to say, but you can read about it there.

And if you are looking for kosher places to eat, I highly recommend Shamash.org.

Halo For Flying: First Game In Years

halogunner.jpgI was reading MacWorld, like I do monthly, and I kept reading about all these cool games that work on a Mac. So, last night I went to the Mall with my wife, and she went into Crate & Barrel and I went into the Apple store.

I walked out with Halo and I installed it that very night.

Very cool game.

I hope to play while flying to Vegas tomorrow.

This is the first real game I have played for probably 6 years. I used to love playing these types of games. Oh, I know, it can be a huge time waster. But I figure, instead of the in-flight movie, Ill play the game until the power runs out on the laptop.

One Must See LoneyGirl15 Video

lonelygirl15-111006.jpgA friend sent me this video of the famous LoneyGirl15 that you must listen to. She says something that makes you go - WOW! I was absolutely stunned by it. You got to listen...

The video is at http://youtube.com/watch?v=6cy8P1roPnQ.

Yea, I know her story was in the NY Times and all but still, this is nuts, just listen to it.

AdWords Epidemic, Gmail Features, Orkut & AdWords, GWC Rollback, Google Doc, MSN Hack, PDF SEO, Schmidt Grilled

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

The Google AdWords epidemic has begun, keep a close eye on your campaigns and budgets! Gmail launched some nifty new features, nothing really that major. Orkut now allows for site targeted ads using AdWords. Seems like some type of rollback occurred with the Google Webmaster Central Sitemaps tool. Google is sometimes as accurate as a Doctor when diagnosing illness. There is this crazy MSN Search hack where you can get a site removed from their index. Want some SEO tips for PDF optimization? Check out the comment in that PDF SEO post also. Eric Schmidt was grilled by Battelle at the Web 2.0 conference. You should be aware that adCenter URLs have changed. Do You See Weirdness With This RSS Feed?

Sometimes, the RSS feed on this site updates without me updating a post or adding a new blog entry. I honestly have no idea why. Two possibilities...

(1) The RSS feed is broken
(2) My blog reader is messed up

So my question is, do you see this weirdness with this RSS feed? If yes, feel free to comment with specifics.

Here is a poll also:

Thanks and sorry if you are affected by this.

Mobile Graphic Yahoo Ads, Long Snippet, Diag Magnifying Tool, AdWords Snapshot, Worm Email, Google Video Sued

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

Yahoo! is already testing mobile graphical ads. Google sometimes gets funny with their middle of the page refinement results. Sometimes Google displays really long snippets. Submitting a Google Sitemap does not guarantee inclusion. Google launched the AdWords diagnostic magnifying glass feature. Google is testing an account snapshot feature in AdWords. Google "accidently" sent a worm via email to Google Video list, disguised as porn. Google Checkout is transaction free until the end of the year. Google Video was sued, but by whom? that is the question. Yahoo! sent off the time capsule today. Happy Thursday!

Mac Guy Dropped From Apple Commercials

mac-guys.jpgI, for the most part, always hated the Mac commercials, and I am a hardcore Mac user. Well, as I stated in that post, I felt that the Mac Guy makes "Windows users look dumb and like victims." I personally thought the message did get across but it was a low blow to PC/Windows users.

Last night I saw an article on Radar Online named Apple Ditches 'Mac Guy' In New Ads. So the Mac guy won't be in the future "I'm a Mac" campaign. Why?

Perhaps for striking people as a "smug little twit," in the words of Seth Stevenson, ad critic for Slate. Long, he adds, is "just the sort of unshaven, hoodie-wearing, hands-in-pockets hipster we've always imagined when picturing a Mac enthusiast.... It's like Apple is parodying its own image while also cementing it."

So long Mac Guy.

Treo USB Modem Works Mostly

usbmodem160I still continue to struggle getting my Treo 700p to connect to my MacBook Pro to connect via the EVDO wireless network. Yes, I know, I told you I had Success With Treo 700P & MacBook Broadband Connect but it stopped working, especially when I needed it.

I think the issue is the bluetooth connection. So before I get out to Vegas next week, I wanted to get it working.

I downloaded an application to my Treo named Treo USB Modem. It basically enables me to connect over the USB plug from my Treo to my MacBook Pro and it works. I went through the Mac and Treo 700p configuration for the USB portion and it worked. I can now connect when plugged into my phone via USB cable.

I then tried the Bluetooth connection part and that did not work. I did everything it told me to, but there was one glitch where it did not display the "Mobile Stream DUN" option in the Bluetooth serial port configuration right away. But then I tried two more times and I saw it there. I may give it another try. But I now know to take my USB cable with me at all times, just in case the bluetooth method does not work.

I seriously hope it continues working.

Ms. Dewey, Spiders Attack, Pulse 8, Google Checkout, AdSense.com, Google Radio & CPG

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

Google confirmed officially that they will be testing radio ads by years end. Google Checkout is transaction fee-less until December 31st. Google now owns AdSense.com. A interesting article by Wired about bots attacking has people thinking. Microsoft launched Ms. Dewey. I posted the MP3 file for the Search Pulse 8. Google launched a consumer packaged goods blog. Google also added new search and filtering tools to Google Video. Finally, should cloaking be allowed for religious reasons? That was November 8th in the search world.

Scrolling LED License Plate Frame

scrollinglicenseplate.jpgI was reading the new MacWorld last night and saw a geek product, that I absolutely must have. It is an LED scrolling license plate frame. I can pop that on my car and drive in seriously style.

The one Macworld wrote about is at the Sharper Image for now only $29, but it is not available for sale at this time (I was literally about to buy it).

Amazon as a similar product but for a whopping $180. Streettags.com sells it for $80.

I guess I am just obsessed with geek gear. I still did not get the T-Qualizer Shirt, maybe because the "Wife" won't let me.

But I am on a mission to get this license plate.

Election Day - No More Campaign Commercials!

vote_button2.gifNo way am I going to get political here...sorry. But one thing I hate about the time before election day, are the commercials. Not only are they boring, they all seem so childish and offensive.

One radio commercial I heard over and over again was a conversation between a candidate and his mother. You can hear the mother asking his son (the candidate) to finish his noodles (or something). Then the candidate tells his mother that he is busy working on stuff. His mother then says that his ideas for the government are stupid and not going to work. Even more so, the mother tells his son that the city will crumble if he goes ahead with his plan. She then laughs at the candidate (her son) and says that "everyone is going to laugh at you like they did in the seventh grade."

I forgot who the commercial was for and against, but those types of commercials make me a bit sick.

I am glad it is over for some time.

PubCon Coverage, Google NYC, Pub Ads, G Earth, AdSense.com, Y! Logo, Subdomains, Yahoo! Wildcards

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I finally posted the Search Engine Roundtables WebmasterWorld PubCon conference coverage schedule, so check it out. I also wrote about my experience visiting Google NYC with Vanessa Fox. The big buzz today is that Google is testing newspaper ads, something we reported a couple times last week. Google now owns AdSense.com. Yahoo! surprises us with a yodeling logo. I looked at the pros of subdomains for SEO. Yahoo! added wildcard support last week. Did Google's content ad algorithm change? Google Earth adds drawing tools. Windows Live Product Upload live (weird to write). Google can now officially buy YouTube. Finally, I posted a common AdWords tip.

Knowing More Than The Sales Man - TigerDirect & Systemax Mini-Vault NAS 1000 Case

Systemax-Mini-Vault-NAS-1000.jpgLast week we ordered another backup solution for our office here. We ultimately went with the Systemax Mini-Vault NAS 1000. The main reason we went with this is for (1) price and (2) ease of configuration.

The price seemed really good, so I called to make sure that it came with the "(4x)250GB HDD / 1TB NAS" it had in the title of the product. I gave the sales representative the SKU and he told me that it did not come with the 4 hard drives, that I had to buy those separately. I then hung up and told Ronnie that he has to be wrong.

I then quoted the product description:

The MiniVault NAS can connect to a Gigabit Ethernet network and comes with four 250GB Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disks for a total of 1TB of storage space.

So we decided to order it online, and ignore the sales person's advice, telling us it did not come with the hard drives.

Today we got the product and guess what? Yes, it came with four 250GB Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disks. Each one was clearly labeled for positioning into the Systemax Mini-Vault NAS 1000. We loaded them and ran the installer, selected a RAID 10 configuration and within 15 minutes, we were all set.

Now Ronnie is configuring the nightly scripts to load data onto the drives.

Backing up is something we take very seriously. This just adds one more layer on the numerous layers of backup protection we have here at RustyBrick.

I plan on buying a smaller version of this, to place offsite, and run nightly offsite backups on this type of device. Yes, we do currently have offsite backups, but the more the merrier.

Google New York Has Free Kosher Food (OU) & More

Friday, I was invited to meet with Vanessa Fox at Google New York. I wrote about some about My Experience at Google New York with Vanessa Fox at SER. But here are a few things I left out...

(1) It took about 15 minutes to sign in at the ground lobby to get in to Google's lobby. I felt bad, there was a long line behind me. And since Vanessa is based in Seattle, the security guy did not know how to reach her. So I gave him her cell phone number, but it was long distance, so he wasn't allowed to call. He suggested I call from my cell. Hmm... what if I called a friend and it wasn't Vanessa? Whoo hooo, free access to Google!

(2) Google has Kosher Food for the NY Googlers who are orthodox Jews. That is a nice plus! The food looked tasty, but I wasn't hungry, so I didn't take a meal. I did take a water, which I spilled on myself.

(3) They have phone booths throughout the layout. I asked Vanessa what that was about, she explained that since Google has such an open layout, if you want to have a quiet phone call, it is hard. So they design phone stations, where you can talk in peace.

(4) I wasn't allowed to take pictures of a bunch of things, including meetings, white boards, people, some special rooms and so on.

(5) I was shown a cool usability lab, both sides. You know, the room the subject is sitting in and then the other room behind the one way mirror where you laugh at the subject (just kidding, no one laughed at anyone).

Here are my three pictures from the event.

Kid Points BB Gun At Undercover Police

BB Gun KidThe AP reports that a teenager in Cedar Rapids, Iowa tried to scare a random driver with his BB gun. He pointed the gun at an unmarked cop car, the policemen got out and pointed back with their real .40-caliber Glock handguns. Wow! He said he was trying to scare people for the Halloween spirit.

"They thought it was a real gun," police Lt. Kenneth Washburn said. "He dropped the gun and attempted to run and was apprehended."

Shelton told officers he was "just playing around" and trying to scare people during the Halloween night incident, police said.

The police charged him for "assault while displaying a dangerous weapon." He was later released to relatives.

Oh, the picture is from Flickr, it is not a picture of the kid who was charged.

Stop Barry!

I posted seven blog posts at the Search Engine Roundtable, then seven at Search Engine Watch. I was looking at my list of 22 other stories that I could have covered, and I said, stop! There is only so much people want to hear and read. Plus there is only so much I can blog.

It is funny that I blog that I need to stop blogging.

Yahoo! Stop Updating Your Blog Posts!

JeremyZ.jpgJeremy Zawodny from Yahoo! wrote a guest post at the YPN blog named Zen and the Art of Blogging. The post is good and all, but I do not need to be notified of the same post 4 times in 2 days.

Yes, it goes back to how I pleaded with the blog world to Stop Updating Your Posts Please! because when you do, the default option in Bloglines is to show the post as new. But it is not new!

I am not picking on Yahoo! here, I even blasted Search Engine Watch as my most hated RSS feed. So hated, I unsubscribed from it.

Of course there is an option to tell Bloglines not to show updates for certain feeds, but I only do that for a select few blogs.

So, Yahoo!, please only update posts when you have to. And when you do, please note what was updated.

Flying to Israel: $40! Not!

israir.pngMy wife and I are flying to Israel for a week vacation/business trip in early January. We already booked our flights on El Al, which is what most people do when they fly to Israel. You can also fly with other airlines, such as Continental and a new one named Israir. Anyway, my wife forwarded me this PDF sales flyer from Israir that said they have a 40 hour sale, for "Jerusalem's 40 year of celebration" where a one way flight to Tel Aviv is $40 from New York. Now, a round trip from NY To TLV is normally anywhere between $750 to $1,500 depending on the season.

The deal with this promotion is that it is $40 for one way, but you need to buy a round trip ticket. So I wonder how much it is for you to get back to NY? :-)

RB Ogio Prototype Bag

So we ordered a hundred or so of these Ogio bags that we were looking to buy. We got a sample bag a couple of weeks ago and then recently got an embroidered swatch of our logo. We stuck it on the bag with tape. Ignore the black circle around the logo, the logo should be directly stitched onto the bag.

Here are some pictures:

Estimated date of arrival for the bags is November 15th, I should be in Vegas at WMW PubCon then.

Updated Link Farm (aka Resources) With 179 Sites

I have updated my link farm to include more of the sites I read on a daily basis. The list has a 179 sites listed on them. I manage most of my reading of them through RSS, without it, I wouldn't be able to possibly stay on top of all those sites (plus I have hundreds of other subscriptions not listed here, in my RSS reader.

Anyway, I hope I got everyone. If I missed you, I guess leave a comment and Ill get you next time.

Coin Toss Wins Dead Woman Election

The school now needs to decide who should take her place in that position.
