Danny Censored Me! Supplemental to Week in Search via Images

So I wrote this piece that I named This Week In Search From Flickr Images: BETA, that basically takes a look at what happened with Google, Yahoo!, Ask.com and Microsoft Live Search over the past week - through the eyes of Flickr's image search. It was fun to write up and I think people enjoy it.

But one of the images I put in my little write up was of these cheerleaders in front of the Google logo.

Yahoo Audacious Party

I thought it was funny, but he pulled it because it may have been taken the wrong way.

Anyway, I didn't want that image to get lost in the shuffle, so I added it here as a supplemental to the main article.

Daily Search Engine Roundtable Link Finds: March 30, 2007

Daily Link Finds GraphicThis is the March 30th issue of a daily post that will contain links to commentary of the posts over at the Search Engine Roundtable. All links I find throughout the day that ad some commentary to the posts written over at the Search Engine Roundtable, will be in the Daily Link Finds. AdWordSense Transfers, Nofollow SEO, AdSense Bans, G&Y Bonuses, Google Images, Google Almighty, Search Flickr

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

Today I wrote about a feature idea to transfer money from AdSense to AdWords. I looked at how the nofollow attribute may hurt ones rankings. There are three types of Google AdSense bans. Google & Yahoo were judged on 2007 bonus incentives. I looked at if Google is too powerful. Finally, I did a beta launch of "This Week in Search From Flickr Images."

Search Engine Roundtable Topics:

  1. Google AdWords & AdSense Users Want Money Transfers Between Accounts
  2. Can The Nofollow Tag Hurt Ones Rankings?
  3. Domain vs. Account Google AdSense Bans

Telling A Story Through Google Pay Per Action

Like I noted at Search Engine Land this morning, I now have the potential to become a billionaire over night. Did I get your attention? Ok so with being approved for PPA, I now can place ads where I can make a flat fee for each desired action taken. So since there are very few restrictions on the Google referral products, I am going to tell a story using Google Pay Per Action referral ads. Now please, I encourage you to click on the ads (because I can encourage you to do so).

A lot of you are search marketers and you know I don't need to tell you that you need serious help with your SEM and PPC skills. So please seek help with:

I know you will need to somehow get to this seminar. And that may require driving. If so, you will need insurance. Because if you crash on the way there, g-d forbid, and you blame me and lose your house, wife and job because of it - I will feel personally responsible. So, make sure you have good auto insurance, if not - try these guys:

And yes, you need to bring a notebook, laptop and a bunch of Google Pens with you to this seminar. Where do you expect to put all this stuff! Do you think you can carry it all in your hands! NO! You will need a bag and a good bag from these guys:

So you have a long day at this seminar and you get sleepy. What are you going to do? Drive home? I hope not. It is best you stay in a hotel or motel near the event and drive back the next day. Find a place to stay with these fine folks:

I know I talked about getting into an accident. But what if it is not your fault, what if some nut drives you off the road. You better find a good car accident lawyer:

We all know lawyers cost a lot, and because of that you may go into debt. Not saying you will go into debt, but it is possible. To get out of debt, use these guys:

But Barry, how do I call a lawyer with out a phone? I hear ya and don't worry, I got you covered with this cell phone ad:

You call the lawyer and he/she asks, why did you crash? Later on, they slap it on you because you forgot to bring you eye classes and you couldn't see the telephone poll in front of you. So you slammed into it. The judge orders you to click on my ad below for contact lenses!

All this hype and crazyness makes you a pop star and ABC News wants to interview you but wait a sec, you need promotional T-shirt to show off your new personal brand. Is there any better way to show off your new dot com then a customized t-shirt?

But now it is in style for stars to take pictures of their fans. So you need the latest digital camera... Yea, I got you covered:

I am going to stop here with the storiy. I know I am only up to letter "D" in the alphabet, but this is a long story that I may want to break up over multiple days.

Tune in next time!

Passover Is Coming - פֶּסַח

Passover, aka Pesach, aka פֶּסַח, is just around the corner. There is a lot of prep required for the holiday.

Think of it as spring cleaning for the Jews.

We have to make sure there is no bread food anywhere in our possession. That means, no crumbs either. Not in our kitchen, not in our homes, not in our offices, not in our cars, no where in our possession. There are some technicalities where you can sell your bread (known as Chametz (חמץ) during Passover), to a non-Jew, so that it is not in our possession during the holiday. But we still need to lock up any food that is in our homes, but sold to a non-Jew.

So that is the most amount of work. Cleaning your house, car, office and so on for Pesach is a ton of work.

Outside of that, you need to buy or make Matzo (מַצָּה) as our bread. You need to prepare for the Seder (סֵדֶר). And then some general holiday stuff.

Lucky me, my wife and I don't have to do much. Since we won't be home for the meals of Passover... HA HA

The holiday is observed, outside of Israel, for 8 days.

I will be one day late to SES NY because it falls out on the last day of Passover.

Note To Self: Do Not Crash Ferrari Enzo

This is a reminder to me, and if you like - also you, to never crash a Ferrari Enzo.

Are you kidding me. That is a $643,330 car, and there are only 349 units. Well, now, 348 units. :)

Blocked Dot Info Comments

dot-info.pngI finally made a bold decision. I am not blocking all comments with .info addresses in them.

I would say the majority of the comments that get through the comment spam filters here and at the Search Engine roundtable are from the .info TLD.

So I finally decided based on talking it over with Ben that I will block it. So if I did it right, no .info comments should go through from now on.

It is a shame it came to this, but 68% of top search results that are spam are from .info TLDs, so why not. :)

Goodbye .INFO.

I Am An Irish Spring Man

pc_irishspring.jpgI thought I get a bit personal with this post and talk about my showering likes and dislikes.

When it comes to soap, I like Irish Spring. I prefer the original, but sometimes my wife buys the one with MicroBeads. It is a nice surprise because that version kinda tickles. I have also tried the IcyBlast version, which was also OK. But my favorite is the original, I like the smell of it.

No, I am not Irish. But I just like it.

What I don't like is having fifteen different soaps. One for your face, one for your hands, one for your toes, one for your back, one for your eyes -- you get my point. I just need one solution for everything. I am a simple man with simple needs.

Of course, this doesn't mean I use soap in my hair. Honestly, I tell my wife to buy me the cheapest shampoo for my hair. Currently, I use White Rain for that, but honestly, any kind is fine with me.

So there you go. I took you in the shower with me.

Today in search I covered how directories using 302 redirects may be harmful. I showed how you can remove a client account from within Google AdWords. I showed how the "set it and forget it" practice is long gone. I explained that premium Google AdSense publishers can be banned also. Second Take: Pinning Google Reader Against Ask.com's Bloglines

Google Reader & Bloglines TestI just got word from Google Reader Engineer, Mihai Parparita, that they have made speed improvements to Google Reader on Apple's Safari.

Mihai said:

We've made some improvements with regards to memory leaks (affecting all browsers, including Safari). Now if you switch between one subscription or folder and another, memory should be properly reclaimed.

So I gave it a quick test with my morning feeds and it worked! Google Reader is now fast in Safari!

That was the main I stuck with bloglines after my first test.

Now that the speed improvements are here, I will be giving it another run. I will give it about a week and let you know what I decide. But it is looking good for Google Reader.

Thanks Mihai!

So seriously, help a poor blogger beat Danny. Plus the write up is pretty interesting at Bloggers Face-Off: Danny Sulivan vs. Barry Schwartz.

My favorite question and answer is 12.
What is the secret of your success, expressed in one word?
Danny said: Inclusiveness
I Said: Consistency

So vote for me, here is the poll.

Update: Todd told me that I voted for Danny by saying I would read Search Engine Land as my only must read blog. I replied to Todd telling him I would only read my posts at Search Engine Land. ;-) kidding of course.

New Jersey To Ban TXT Messaging While Driving: Say It Ain't So!

messaging_ss_chatSay it ain't so! New Jersey lawmakers may ban texting while driving from Reuters says they may pass legislation that will fine you up to $250 if you are caught text messaging while driving.

I live on my Treo while away from my computer. Mostly for email, but I also get many text messages. And often this means while I am driving in my car.

So does text messaging include email?

Get this, "one in five drivers are texting while driving" according to a nationwide survey. Wow!

Funny, yea - eating, drinking, and putting on makeup should be banned also! Why just text messaging? Heck, I can txt and email blindfolded on my treo. In fact, I am hoping for better integration with the Treo and my GPS device, possibly voice controlled email on my GPS via my Treo, would be a solution. It is a dream I have...

Ski Down an Escalator

Like skiing?
No snow?
Big city?

Solution.

Thanks Judah again!

Is The Geek-a-Cycle The Answer?

Judah sent me a link to the Geek-a-Cycle. It is an exercise bike attached to a computer desk. How creative... Here is one of their videos of it in action.

Wonder how productive such a working environment would make for my employees?

If they can peddle to save me money on my electric bill, well then, maybe it is the answer for that.

How much is it? $400... You can order it if you like or just laugh at the idea.

Your Picture On The Cover of Wired

Wired LogoI received the April issue of Wired this weekend and on the back cover was a promotion saying "Make Wired Your Own."

You can actually get your face on the cover of Wired. Pretty cool.

There are conditions of course:

(1) You must be a subscriber to Wired (I am)
(2) You must upload an image of someone 13 years old or higher
(3) The image must be a jpg format and minimum 1200 x 1200 in size

The first 5,000 usable and approved submissions will get a copy of the July issue with their picture on the cover.

How do you do this? Well, if you get Wired, you probably already know about this...

If you lost the promo, just go to http://www.wired.com/promo/xerox.

Probably the easiest way to make it on the cover of such a popular magazine. Unfortunately Fortunately, you will be the only one seeing this cover. :-)

My Birthday Dinner - Matzoh Ball Soup, Chicken & Chocolate Cake

BREADED CHICKENYesterday was my birthday (thanks for all the comments, emails, IMs, etc.) and as I told you, I planned on going out with my wife for dinner.

We went 30 minutes away to Noahs Ark, one of my favorite simple restaurants.

For starters, I ordered a matzoh ball soup, that came with noodles... Good stuff.

The main course was one of my favorite chicken dishes, a breaded chicken cutlet. It came with two cutlets, a order of huge fires and some vegetables. I know it isn't the healthiest but it was my birthday.

For dessert (which I never get) I ordered this deep chocolate cake... it was solid!

Thanks Wife!

Spam Post On Spam Blog Makes Digg Front Page

This is pretty funny... Tamar wrote, I helped a bit, a piece at the Search Engine Roundtable named 75% of Google's Blogspot Blogs are Spam. It was a good write up summarizing some of the key points of a study done by Microsoft Research, which was also discussed at a popular forum named WebmasterWorld.

A day after we posted this at the Search Engine Roundtable, this site wrote the same article with the same key points that Tamar put together, without sourcing us with any credit. That is not a big deal, trust me, it happens all the time. I would say for each article we post, it is copied illegally 10 times (at least). But this one made it to the front page of Digg with almost 600 diggs. As you can see, there is no way to contact this guy - there is not way to leave a comment or email. In fact, the domain whois info doesn't have enough information either.

digg-icon.gifDon't you find it a tad funny how a post on the topic of spam blogs from a spammy blog makes it to the home page of Digg? I am sure it happens all the time. But while my stuff gets buried, sites like these thrive. :)

Human based ranking... Much better than algorithmic based ranking... Not in this case. Tamar actually tracked down some of the links to that spam post and had at least one well known blogger change the link to the original source. I didn't ask her to, but thanks.

Honestly, I don't have the time to track down every site that steals our content or ideas. So I let 99.9% of it go. Honestly, it doesn't even bother me anymore - it used to but not anymore.

Again... Don't you find it a tad funny how a post on the topic of spam blogs from a spammy blog makes it to the home page of Digg?

F/U

fu-shorthand.gifYears ago, I got an email from a long time client that read something like this.

There is a bug with portion X of the system.

F/U!

I scratched my head and thought, what they heck! It is a small bug, why is he so upset!

Plus it is not in his nature to use such language, even when upset.

So I read it like fifteen times and finally figured out F/U stood for "follow up."

So in a sense he wrote, please follow up with me when you look into it.

Just remembered this story, figured I share it with you.

Today Is My Birthday

My BirthdayToday is my birthday, which means it is my brother's birthday too - how simple!

Anyway, not much to say. I don't think I will be doing anything special today. I hate the surprise stuff. I hate making a big deal about my personal things.

But you have to admit, Cartoon Barry is looking pretty cute in that birthday hat. ;-)

Like most Thursday nights, tonight my wife and I will go out for dinner. But tonight, unlike most Thursday nights, I will be getting a piece of cake. Whoo hoo!

Honestly, I am a lucky guy. There is nothing I really want for my birthday, that I don't already have.

For more about me, check out About Barry page and then look at the top portion of the page for the links to my different profiles.

Back to the daily grind.

Forbes Called Me Today

quote-image.gifI have been quoted many places since beginning my coverage on search, in fact I stopped keeping track - which is kind of a shame...

Today, I had two calls, one with a smaller publisher and one with Forbes. I spoke with both about twenty-minutes on different topics in search.

The Forbes call went something like this....

Reporter: Hi, can I ask you some questions on X, Y and Z?
Barry: Ummmm... Sure

Reporter: So Search Company X launched Product Y today, and I had questions on it. I saw you wrote about it at blog Z.
Barry: Ummmm.. Yea.

Reporter: Can you tell me what you think of their implementation of it?
Barry: Sure, well, since it is so new, I don't have full access to it yet, but as far as I know, it would work like this. I then explain how I envision it would work. I explain how it differs from others and where it can improve or change.

Reporter: Do you think people can take it this way? (Trying to get me to say something that goes against the product, even if I don't feel that way).
Barry: Well no. Since they launched it this way, it won't be used for that - at least not the way it works now. But technically, if it was implemented a different way, people can abuse it in the fashion you said. But not currently.

Reporter: But if they did implement it that way, would you say it can be used in a bad way?
Barry: Yes but they didn't implement it like that.

Reporter: Asks the same Q another way...
Barry: I give examples again of products that are similar and explain that this product was not launched in that fashion - so it won't be used in that way. If that changed, then yes, it can be used in that way....

Don't get me wrong... I love these calls. But it is funny. They call you with a story in mind and try to make the story by having you agree with them. I guess that is how it works... I really don't know.

Some calls are pure opinion and further explanation on the topic. Those are fine and dandy.

Do I get quoted and linked to? Not likely... I would say at best, 10% of the calls I get from these publishers (Forbes, Business Week, Wall Street Journal, NY Times, eWeek, and so on) end up quoting me. 90% of those do not, but they may use the ideas we talked about it. Is it a waste of my time? Never, I enjoy the calls and it is worth it for me to try to get that quote.

But what really upset me was a call from the smaller publisher. About two months ago, I answered about 30 minutes worth of questions, she sent me the report today. I reviewed it, and it didn't contain my name or any other names from her sources. I asked her about it and she said we do not cite names for privacy reasons. I am like, thanks for telling me. But that call was fun too. Would I do it again? Honestly, I probably would because I like helping people. Should I? I doubt I should. I would think if I spent that time writing a blog post at Search Engine Roundtable or Search Engine Land, it would help a lot more people than the case above with the smaller publisher.

Perfect USB Peripheral For A Boss: USB Missile Launcher

USB Missile Launcher(1) I am a boss, I know, I really am - weird.
(2) I am a geek, or at least a geek wanna be.

What is a great present for me, especially since tomorrow is my birthday? A USB Missile Launcher!

Yea, I love geek stuff, and this is one of those things. And it would be great to shoot missiles at my workers, knowing that it won't hurt them. The only problem is that I am in my own office and the employees are in another office. So maybe, if I can operate this missile launcher remotely and shot them from my office, maybe that will work?

The USB Missile Launcher allows you to shoot foam missiles from the comfort of your desk. Cheesy co-workers are no longer safe from your assaults.

Tilt, rotate, and fire your USB Missile Launcher using only your keyboard. Included software features sound effects. Mute them for your stealth operations.

Ah, got to love it! Thank Judah for the link!

Google Reader Is My Official Backup RSS Reader to Bloglines

Google ReaderSince RSS is critical in my daily life, I decided to have a backup RSS reader.

As you know, I have had trouble on occasion with Bloglines. It is expected that programs some times blink out, so to help not miss a beat, I decided to use Bloglines as my main reader and Google Reader as my backup reader.

How does this work?

I continue to use Bloglines as I normally do. But after I get through my morning feed runs, I will use my Google Reader Dashboard Widget to click over to Google Reader and mark all items as read. I may do this a few times throughout the day, after I know I have seen everything in Bloglines.

This way, if something does go wrong with Bloglines, I know I have very little overlap or missed feeds in Google Reader, to fall back on. Yes, this means I need to export my OPML file from Bloglines to Google Reader every now and then, but it is not a huge deal. I consider this like any backup procedure, RSS is just that important to me.

Do you have a RSS backup solution?

Got Joost

JoostYou say what? Yes. I said Joost. I got Joost. Jason Dowdell sent me an invite, and now I have Joost.

What is Joost?

Joost (pronounced 'juiced') is an interactive software for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer tv technology, created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and Kazaa). Joost began development in 2006. Working under the code name "The Venice Project," Zennstrom and Friis have assembled teams of some 150 software developers in about a half-dozen cities around the world, including New York, London, Leiden and Toulouse. Joost's CTO is Dirk-Willem van Gulik.[1] The teams are currently in negotiations with TV networks. It has signed up with Warner Music, Ministry of Sound TV and production company Endemol for the beta.[2] In February 2007, Viacom entered into a deal with the company to distribute content from its media properties, including MTV Networks, BET and film studio Paramount Pictures.

So I gave it a test run and decided to capture it on my screen for you, so here it is:

It is pretty cool, but honestly, I spent about 5 minutes with it.

Currently I have zero invites to give out. As soon as I get one, I will invite Gary Price and then whomever else wants. So, if you want one, let me know. I feel like Jason wasted one on me, so I feel bad.

Did StumbleUpon Ban Me?

theme18in.pngSo now the I have sidekick I am better able to verify a few things. I have been giving "thumbs up" via StumbleUpon pretty much for every article I publish. In fact, I added a SU feedflare that makes it easier to stumble without the toolbar.

I asked Tamar where these stumbles show up, because I keep submitting and they don't show up in my profile. Yes, I am logged in. Yes, I tried both the link method (FeedFlare) and using the Firefox toolbar and neither work.

I asked Tamar to use both methods and the submissions show up in her profile right away.

So I am thinking, that maybe I am banned from StumbleUpon for submitting too often?

I never heard of a StumbleUpon ban, have you?

Why Does An Airport Run Feel Like You Are Driving In Circles?

squared circle - airport windowLast night I had to do an airport run. My brother, sister-in-law and two nieces were flying in from Israel (via Air France). I volunteered to pick them up.

The problem is, the Air France web site doesn't update their flight status page too often. So when I got there, I was not sure if they landed. Some web sites said they did land, some said they did not. So as I approach terminal 1 and JFK airport, I glide by the terminal looking for those familiar faces. I do this a few times, going out the terminal 1 exit, back into terminal 1 and then back again.

At some point, I see if I can sit and wait. I tried several positions. Up in front, in the middle, at the end, double parked, in the itty bitty corner --- none worked. So I continue my drive in circles.

Finally I spot them and they hope in the car with their two dozen suitcases for the 1 hour and 15 minute drive home.

They are in the states for the next month or so.

Stop Messing With My Wikipedia Entry!

Danny Sullivan & Barry Schwartz at SES ChicagoPart of online reputation management is watching your Wikipedia entry, if you have one. I am happy that the revision history page has an RSS feed, so I subscribe to it and whenever it changes, I am alerted.

My Wiki entry is here, I wish this wiki entry referenced mine, any idea how to do that? ;-)

On March 15th Sherool removed the image I had on there, from Rebecca at SEOmoz because "removing image with incompatable license (non-commercial only)." As an FYI, Rebecca emailed me the image for use on that page, but whatever.

Instead, on March 17th, LinguistAtLarge replaced the image with this one which is cool with me.

It is fun to watch people make changes to your Wikipedia entry. And since they have RSS support for the revision history page, there is no excuse why you should not track the changes of pages that interest you.

Ask Me About My Blog Pin Schwag

Ask Me About My Blog PinWhen I got to the office this morning, I received a package in Saturday's mail. I opened it up and it contained three pins from "Pinonda" saying that I should take one, and give one to Ben and Chris. The pins are named Ask Me About My Blog - which I think is cool. He said he loves the Search Pulse, a weekly podcast Ben, Chris and I do Tuesday night, and wanted to send us a thank you.

He pinned them on his business card, here is a blurry image of it.

Search Bloggers: Keep Blogging Please

Michael Gray from Wolf Howl told many SEO Bloggers Step Away From the Keyboard in a video. This blog post was live on Saturday and there are already 22 comments. I decided it would be fun to post a video response, so here is my attempt to respond via YouTube.

In short I ask SEO bloggers to keep doing what they are doing but listen to Michael's advice on being unique and add value. I personally track hundreds of blogs and thousands of feeds each day, all on one topic - search. I obviously do not cite each blog post or feed item I find but I do often cite different sources each day. Some from bloggers that may be unknown to many and some from well-read bloggers.

The point being, keep blogging, add your unique ideas to what you blog about. I rather read some repetition than tell you to go away all together. Why? Because you do have good posts every now and then. I know it is hard to break into the search blog space, there are people who have been doing it for years already. So my advice, keep going at it, keep it unique and find your niche. I appreciate it.

And if you are like Michael and hate repetition, just don't subscribe to those blogs. Let me, Danny and other bloggers weed through those posts for you and do our best to bring you the best of the best posts on a daily basis. That is what we are here for.

St. Patricks Day Theme For Search Engine Roundtable

I am not Irish but I do love the green leprechauns, plus who doesn't love a pot of gold? Plus I am sure the search engines will have logos up for the holiday. So we wanted to theme up the Search Engine Roundtable with a special look for St. Patricks Day. Here is a screen capture:

St Patricks Day Theme for Search Engine Roundtable

Part of the new design was to make it easier to make these themes. Plus they look a hell of a lot better than just changing the logo. We can now mess with the whole header and change it as we see fit.

We have a bunch of themes being prepared for the events and holidays in April.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to those of you that celebrate!

Oh, a good resource from the US Census on Irish-American Heritage Month from my buddy Gary who is also Jewish.

Here Comes a Weekend Snow In

Last night is started to snow a bit, but I was able to get my car to work. However, I doubt I will be able to get it back. There are rumors that this weekend, it is suppose to snow a foot or so.

Here is a picture of what is going on now.

Early Friday Snow

Worse comes to worse, my brother will drive me home and I'll leave my car here until Sunday.

We will see.

Update: I dug my car out, it wasn't bad. There was a plow there, so he helped by pushing away a bulk of the heavy snow. Then I dug under the tires and rocked it out.

This is what the car looked like when I first arrived Sunday morning.

Bloglines Image Wall Filled With Pornographic Images

As you know, my preferred RSS reader is currently Bloglines. But about a month ago they launched this totally irrelevant Image Wall feature.

Image Wall, to my understanding, displays images from recent blog posts and places them on the image wall. How is this useful to me? It is not. But I decided to take a peak today and see what is in the image wall.

To my surprise, way too many of the images in Image Wall were pornographic and adult in nature. Of course, there are those blogs that are probably spamming Bloglines Image Wall feature, but nevertheless, it is not nice. Here is a screen capture I took and blocked out parts of showing some of the image wall.

Yes, you can report these images by hovering your mouse over the image. Then up comes a larger version of that image (yea, that is what I wanted) and click on the "report this image as "may offend" link.

Report Bloglines Image Wall

To be fair, you have to agree before entering to "The Image Wall is comprised of dynamically generated images from user feeds and may contain material of an explicit sexual nature or other adult content." And you must say you are over 18. OK, now what elementary or high school student using bloglines won't click the agree button?

But the spammers are faster, so is this the end of image wall?

Update: Decided to remove the image. Also, Bloglines is doing work with dozens of adult filtering services but it is obviously not working. My main problem is that you can stumble on this images. Of course if a kid wants to find these images, they can. But if they find them by accident, I have an issue with that.

Learning Marketing From Listening To Neil Young

Neil Young & MarketingI love Neil Young, mostly because I grew up listening to it while at my childhood friend's house - his dad was a big fan. Since then, I have been to several Neil Young concerts and CSNY concerts. In any event, I also am a big fan of SEO and some marketing. One blog I skim (but not read too deeply) is the popular Seth Godin.

He wrote a blog post named Lessons from Neil Young where Live at Massey Hall by Neil Young. He made two observations that lead to a marketing concept. The two observations were:

(1) Listeners like to hear what they heard before. Seth adds that even if a song, at the time was not popular but became popular later, the audience back then was not as enthusiastic with the song, as they were with songs they have heard before.

(2) Songs that did not work so well in front of his listeners, Neil Young tried to play better but it still didn't work. Why? Because they were not common songs.

Seth concludes that "It's what you say, most of the time, not how you say it."

Interesting thought. If you think about it, does this work the same with search engine optimization?

There are many ways to think of it:

(1) It is what you link to most, not what you say in the content (link vs. content debate).
(2) It is quantity over quality (very debatable).
(3) It is the link anchor text, and not the content (kinda stretching it there).

Honestly, not sure if you can apply it to SEO here. Seems like it doesn't work too well.

My First Known Digg Bury: Digg Burial

This afternoon, one of my articles made it to the Digg home page for about 10 minutes. It was then buried. I am not sure, but this is the first Digg Burial I have noticed, on the Search Engine Roundtable.

The digg is at http://digg.com/tech_news/Is_Google_the_Next_Small_Business_Killer

You can see it has a nice number of Diggs, it got enough to be made popular. But once it hit the home page, it was then buried.

How do I know?

A search for seroundtable.com articles returns no results at the time I write this. So you check off the "Include Buried Stories" and then you see up comes that article.

Digg Burial

Why did I get buried? Honestly, no idea. It can be a ton of reasons, so I won't guess.

Danny Sullivan has an excellent article named Monitoring Buries At Digg at Search Engine Land.

It is one thing to read the article by Danny, it is another thing to experience it.

A Hand Made Car Made of Wood

Hand Made Wooden CarJudah from Diamond Vues showed me a post at BornRich.org describing the Tryane II. The Tryane II is a car made of wood, completely by hand.

The car took 2000 hours of work, it is 900 lbs, 13' 7" long, 5' 4" wide and 4' 4" tall. It can drive up to a 100 miles per hour and gets between 55-70 miles per gallon. It is made of gaboon marine ply and mahogany veneers bonded with epoxy resin.

How crazy is that? Imagine seeing someone drive by you in that. Imagine this car crashing into yours. Ouch!

Dreaming Up The Perfect Title

NewspaperI do a ton of blogging, as I wrote about several times in the past. One of the most important parts of blogging is coming up with a super title. The thing is, a title that works well at one blog, might not work well at another blog.

Here is an example for you.

This morning I wrote a the Search Engine Roundtable named Google Does Impact Many Small Businesses, where I described how some small businesses can be seriously impacted by how Google treats them in the rankings.

Now, if I would post this at Search Engine Land, the other search blog I write at, I would use a different title. Maybe something more asking for approval... Hmmm... something like, Should Google Have Such an Impact on Small Businesses? Or maybe something more factual, like, "Business Owner Almost Folds Due to Google Update."

But then I was thinking up a title for the Digg audience. Something bold like Small Business Owners Hurt By Google or Google Forces Employer To Fire Workers. But then I saw someone dugg the story and named it Is Google the Next Small Business Killer? which has a nice ring to it.

As always, it is also important to be keyword specific. Don't be abstract with your title so people don't understand what you are talking about. Don't use code words, because search engines won't figure it out. Be clear, transparent and use words that describe what you are writing about.

Giving a good title to your blog post is very important. Think about it before you post and go with your gut.

For IRC I Use Snak

Snak.pngLet's get old school geek here... IRC, yea, Internet Relay Chat, before instant messaging there was IRC. It was created in August 1988 by Jarkko Oikarinen, as a replacement for another form of chat - but this one really took on. IRC is like AOL chat rooms but old school. There are ops (channel moderators) who help keep things in order.

I used IRC when I was a teenager, mostly because my brother Ronnie used it for programming help. But then when WebmasterRadio.FM opened an IRC channel, I decided to break back into IRC again. I am an op in that channel, where people come to get help and chat about search stuff. FYI, I heard WebmasterRadio accidently banned many of the users from the channel last night (ouch!).

For IRC, I use Snak (no I prefer not to use an IM client for IRC, because they are totally different. Snak is wonderful in that it allows me to customize the screens as well, has tabbed windows and much more. The one thing that bugs me is how PM (private messaging works), just doesn't work logically - but I hope future versions fix it. I keep the Snak application at the lower left of my screen during the work day, I often miss the conversation there, but sometimes, I'll peak over to see what is going on. During live podcasts, I keep an eye on the chat room, especially if I am doing the show.

Adium X Is My Instant Messenger Client

adium-logo.pngI am a heavy instant messenger users. In fact, most of us in the office prefer to IM rather than walk the few feet to each other and use our mouths to talk. Many of us prefer to just type our message. Why?

  • Less distracting...
  • More convenient
  • Less intrusive
  • More geeky
  • Simply easier for most conversation

It doesn't mean we never get up, but often we opt for IM over in person discussions. Most of the time it is, what is the status with this or that, can you review this, can you email me that, where can I find this, etc.

Plus I use IM to talk with SEOs and SEMs, vendors, clients and friends throughout the day.

In fact, my IM list is so big that I often have 80 plus active buddies in the list. That is why I prefer to use Adium X. Adium is a long time Mac alternative to AOL Instant Messenger's software. I am able to easily customize the interface to blend into my desktop so that it takes up as little space as possible. In addition, it has tabbed IM abilities, lots of nice features including the much appreciated IM chat logs (searchable). The one feature I wish it had was video chat, which I think they are working on. I can live without it for now.

I Won't Be Home in June - Search Marketing Conference Blitz

smx120x60.gifI was chatting with some search geeks about the upcoming conferences. Up come the month of June and I realized, I won't be home that month.

Here is the line up for June (that I currently am aware of):

FYI, the Latino conference is based in Miami. The good thing is that these are two day conferences each. Next month is the huge SES NYC between April 10–13, 2007, I will be missing the first day (Tuesday) because it is the last day of Passover.

I am extremely excited for Danny's first new conference, SMX... If you are signing up, use my affiliate link so I can earn some side cash. ;-) But I am really looking forward to it.

I assume the wife will come with me to SES Toronto? But the others, I doubt it?

Messing With BUMPzee

bz2.gifDid you guys see BUMPzee? ShoeMoney has been putting BUMPzee widgets on his site for a pretty long time now. I haven't seen much chatter about it outside of there.

I set up my profile at http://www.bumpzee.com/users/view/rustybrick so if you sign up, friend me please.

I also am in the process of "claiming my blogs" so not sure how long that will take.

Here is a "bump This button" for this entry.

And here is code for "New Posts and Recent Visitors" not sure if it will work, because I am not fully claimed...

Update on PlayStation Usage: Got "Resistance: Fall of Man"

Resistance: Fall of Man PS3So it looks like I am going to keep the PlayStation 3 I ordered a couple weeks ago. Honestly, I haven't played all that much, but I intend to play Saturday nights more often.

Sunday, I picked up Resistance: Fall of Man and I played a little. After getting accustomed to many of the controls (took several minutes) I really started to enjoy the game. The graphics are wow! The actions and controls really put you in the game, which makes it incredibly exciting. I am playing the game offline first, this way I can hopefully learn all the features and get even more accustomed to the controls. Then, once I beat the game, I plan on playing it online.

What about Madden? Well, that too. But for some reason, I have yet to figure out how to save a game mid-way through so that I can pick up later. Resistance is easy to save and pick up later, which is important, since I frequently have to stop playing throughout the game. But I hope to get a Madden league going with the guys and then possibly join an online league (but not yet, because that requires commitment).

In any event, Resistance rocks, I am glad I got it. Nothing like killing aliens to relieve stress from the week.

Blue Lips, Smurfs & Kosher Shushi Boats

smurfs on subwayLast night I went out with "the guys" to a sushi place. First things first, I don't like sushi, but I went anyway and ate a noodle dish. The other eight guys ate sushi, they ordered up about $250 worth of it, and it mostly came in this pirate boat. Wish I would have taken a picture, but it looked like one of these. The boat sat in front of, let's say, a zimmer-man.

The guy on my left totally demolished the boat, I was very impressed. I was a bit upset, because I sat their like a girl on a diet, eating my noodles. I was unable to show the power I have over food and scarf down 15 hot dogs or ten hamburgers, in one sitting. So I am hoping to lobby for the next guys dinner night out be at a place with man food and not sushi (yes, I just did ding on sushi).

So how do the smurfs get involved? Good question. :)

When I met my wife later, she asked me my lips were blue. My wife asked if I kissed someone blue. I told her, there were no smurfs at the restaurant...

So you tell me, how does one's lips get blue after eating noodles at a sushi place?

Also, how funny is that picture above of Smurfs on a subway. :)

Applying For Elite Citi PremierPass Card

citi-premier-pass-card-elite-level-mc-lgBefore I got married, I did not spend much on my credit card. But that has all changed. Being married now for about 10 months, I have decided to start earning "points" on my credit card. I currently use a Quicken CitiCard (which was at risk), so I added points to it shortly after I got married.

After getting married and moving to a new community, I met this guy who I have become friendly with. His name is actually Barry S. also, but we are not related... This guy is a mile and credit card rewards guru. He gave me tons of tips, all of which I could not remember. I finally convinced him to start a blog, which I am hosting for him. The name of the blog is The Miles Pimp, yea the domain http://www.milespimp.com/ was available, so I told him to snag it.

Today he posted about a really good rewards card from Citi Cards. It is named the Citi PremierPass® Card - Elite Level. This card it chock full of unbelievable awards, according to the Miles Pimp (love that name)...

  • You get 15,000 points right after you make your first purchase
  • Get a free ticket companion ticket for each "round-trip Coach Class excursion-fare ticket with your card for $299"
  • Earn double points for every dollar spent at "supermarkets, drugstores, gas stations, commuter transportation and parking merchants"
  • Earn 1 point for every dollar spent anywhere else
  • 1 point for every mile you fly on any airline plus for anyone else who flies with a ticket you bought on that credit card
  • No Blackout Dates
  • and tons of other features and services

This card actually seems a heck of a lot better than my Platinum American Express Business Card. But for now, I have way too many points on the AMEX to switch over. I'll switch over to this just for my personal card.

I am so happy my friend started this blog, imo, it is worth subscribing to.

More details on the Citi card here and make sure to check out The Miles Pimp and say hello.

Tamar Weinberg Will Be Working For Me & RustyBrick

2006102203152694_avatar.jpgLooks like Chris has spilled the beens and told the world that Tamar Weinberg is the mystery sidekick.

Tamar has been blogging since she has been in college, in fact starting her first blog while at Barnard College. She graduated from Columbia University in the City of New York with a BA, Computer Science / Psychology. Tamar has tons of talents, from being hired to work at 10e20 as a systems administrator to writing on SEO and social media topics at their blog. She also has a wonderful personal blog at Techipedia. Tamar is also a very talented photographer, as you can see by her Pixelopera photo blog.

As Chris said, I have agreed to Tamar helping out at the 10e20 blog for the next two months while Chris finds a replacement for Tamar. In fact, I will be encouraging Tamar to join all the SEM Forums and participating heavily throughout the day.

Tamar will have a ton of roles at RustyBrick:

  • Writing for the Search Engine Roundtable
  • Helping me with research for Search Engine Land
  • Helping with our search conference coverage (see her at SES NYC)
  • Writing content for RustyBrick
  • Doing project management work
  • Helping me on the client management side at RustyBrick
  • Do some video casts with me on search stuff
  • Participating heavily in SEO/SEM forums
  • Participating in social media networks
  • The list really goes on and on...

I hope she knows what she got herself into. ;-)

Like I said before, I am very excited about this.

I want to wish Chris and his soon to be wife, a congrats on their upcoming wedding this Saturday. And if you need anything from me or Tamar, we will be there for you during this exciting time. Enjoy the wedding and your future together!

Sidekick Issued Warning by Blogger & Did Not Even Start Yet

250px-BatmanRobinThis is great, the sidekick I hired has not even started yet and is already being challenged.

Lisa Barone, who I think rocks, has issued a warnings to the, soon to be announced, sidekick.

Sidekick, whoever you are, it’s on!

Lisa is too funny. You have to love her writing style. But should my sidekick be afraid? I am not sure. What is even funnier, to me, is that they both know each other.

And Lisa, don't kid me on giving up warm and sunny California, for dark and cold New York.

It is actually a bit weird for me to keep calling this person a sidekick. Hope no offense is taken, it is meant with sincerity.

In any event, I suspect to announce the name of the mystery sidekick some time this week. The sidekick starts a week from today, if all goes well. Oh, and don't let Lisa scare you. :)

Also, I set it up so I can IM twitter these one liners to update my badge automatically. Let's see if I add this to my sidebar or not.

Slapped With Electric Bill For Past Four Years

Electric MeterA few weeks ago I get a letter in the mail from the building I lease from. The letter says that since I began leasing the office (four years ago) I have not been billed for the electric I use.

They said they discovered this error while doing an audit of their electricity bill.

I then got my first bill for $436.13 for the month of February.

I had two issues with this.

(1) $436.13 seemed way too high. I asked my neighboring office, who has a bigger space and large copy machines, and they pay about $300 per month.

(2) Paying $436 for the past 48 months adds up to $20,928. I had no idea I was suppose to pay for electric and now to be hit with it, wow!

To resolve issue number one, I called them and told them it seems to high. I showed them my neighbor's bill and we discovered that the difference was in the "demand" fee. So they decided to take the bill back and find out what the issue is.

I got a letter today that there were two reasons the bill was so high.

(1) The demand fee was set to a higher point then we needed because when the meter first went live, the surge from that initial launch, went up to a high point. They then billed me based on a demand requirement that I did not need. So they fixed that.

(2) I was on a "commercial rate" as opposed to a "small user rate."

My new bill for the same time period is now $275.80, so the difference is a savings of 190.33 per month. Of course, each month will differ. But saving about $200 a month is nice.

Now, I need to pay for the four years I supposedly did not. Now, if I owe it, which I understand I do, I will pay it. They were very nice about how much I owe. Instead of $275.80 multiplied by 48 months, which is $13,238.40 - they are offering something less.

They said they will charge me based on a formula and it would come out to just $172.87 per month. So that comes out to $8,297.76. They said I can pay it off over a 12 month period, which is also nice. So instead of $20,928, I am saving $12,630.24. Which is nice.

What do you think I should do? Pay it all? It was on the lease agreement, but you know those things, they are huge! It was their fault for not billing me. I honestly did not know I had to pay this. So what you think?

Should I Fear Fearing Someone With a Fear?

I am getting a bit worried about fearing people with serious fears. You see, I have a post named Scoleciphobia : Fear Of Worms, I did some research on what the legit name of such a fear was. I then wrote a post about it, because I found it interesting.

Thing is, people searching on scoleciphobia or fear of worms are landing on this page.

scoleciphobia - Google Search (20070309)

After reading some of the comments at the scoleciphobia post, I see that I am freaking out people with this fear of worms?

Image this. You are afraid of worms. You search for help with your scoleciphobia illness and find the first result at my blog. You click over and bam, you see a huge ugly green worm.

Scoleciphobia - Fear Of Worms (20070309)

Now, if you look at the worm, to me, the worm looks kinda cute. Not even sure if it is a worm - people suggest in the comments it is a caterpillars, but it is cute anyway. But for those with the fear of worms, they don't find it too cute.

One person said the picture itself scared him or her. Others said since it is a caterpillar that it doesn't scare them.

Should I pull the image? My immature side kind of find it funny. They see a listing for scoleciphobia, they click over, they see a picture that makes them possibly jump. On the other hand, I love that picture and the post. It is both educational and informative.

Should I fear fearing someone with a fear?

Using Grep Is a Huge Time Saver

There are certain repetitive tasks I do throughout the day. And with those tasks, I try to automate as much as possible. Why? Because a few minutes saved several times per day, seriously adds up.

One thing I do is use my toolbar bookmarks folder to store articles, blog entries and other items that I want to write or link to throughout the day.

I then export that folder into Text Edit. After that, I save the files as HTML.

I then bring it into BBEdit so I can use the power of find and replace with grep.

For example, with my daily link finds, I need to format the links so that we have the article name as a hyper link followed by a comma and then the article source.

So with a bit of grep, I am able to do a find and replace on the HTML generated by Text Edit and make my HTML in a matter of a split second versus a few minutes. I use this several times a day for several different reasons, so it is a huge time saver. Thank you Ronnie.

Here is a screen capture of the BBEdit grep action in use:

grep

Basically, it is:

Find this: ^<p class="p1">(.+),([^,]+)</a></p>$
Replace with: <li>\1</a>, \2</li>

My Inbox Is Now Empty

I can't believe it, I got my inbox down to 0 (that is ZERO) messages!

Well, as I write this, it now has more emails. But I have a screen capture to prove that my inbox is now empty.

My Inbox Is Empty

I am a nut when it comes to email. Anything in my inbox must be taken care of. If not, then I freak out. I have tons and tons of folders plus "actions" to move emails from my inbox into specified folders.

I am just glad that I was able to take a screen capture of my inbox with zero messages. Honestly, I don't know how people manage to put all their messages in their inbox without any folders. I don't get it.

I Dream About Blogging

El Al Terminal in IsraelOK, so now I am scared. First I dream about Matt Cutts and last night I had a dream about blogging. Let me describe the dream.

Some how I am in some type of dark airport. I am going through security to get my bags - I know, why do I go through security to get my bags after the flight? Behind the security desk are two friends but they insist on asking me questions to confirm I am who I am. I tell them, you know me, they say that they do but they need to ask these questions.

At that point, I am dreaming that this event would make for good blogging material. Yes, I am dreaming that what happened in a dream would be good blog material.

You know what is even crazier about dreaming about blogging. Is to use the dream as blog material.

Screen Cast - Love Doing Them

It has been a while since I last uploaded a screen cast. But I decided to do one for the new Ask City features, that I blogged about at Search Engine Land.

In this screen cast, I explain some of the new features.

Take a look:

Pretty neat feature!

Oh, I use Snapz Pro X on my Mac to make these screen caps happen.

Traffic & Link Building With Flickr

Danny Sullivan taught me to link my < ahref="http://www.flickr.com/">Flickr images to my posts. I decided to take a look at what type of traffic Flickr has sent to this specific blog year to date. I counted 91 referrals from Flickr. The top 5 Flickr referrals came from these pictures:

Now, I know this isn't a ton of traffic, but it is nice. So how does this work?

If you go to a picture you upload and click directly under the image, a text box will appear. It looks like this:
Traffic & Link Building With Flickr

Just enter in your html and links, etc. and presto, it can look like:

flickr_traffic

You see, the links turn into hyperlinks and people do actually click over.

Are they indexed and count as links towards your search rankings?

I checked Google Webmaster Central's link tool, found several flickr.com links in the export file. I then checked this specific image, we see it is indexed and it also has a cache link within Google. I do not see any nofollow attributes in the source code, but I do see the static link to cartoonbarry.com in the source code. So it looks like these links count somewhat.

So traffic and links from Flickr. Nice.

But uploading images directly to your site enables you to get traffic from Google Image search and other image search engines. Otherwise, you send that traffic to Flickr and hope for the click through. So which way to go, which way to go? :)

Missed Tuesday Basketball Three Weeks in a Row!

basketballI don't think I have ever missed Tuesday basketball three times in a row. At most, maybe two weeks, but not even when I went on my honeymoon.

The first two weeks, I ended up stuck with work until well after 10pm each day.

But last night I missed for two reasons.

(1) My wife is sick, so I wanted to help around the house. Yea, I am a good husband. :)
(2) It was freezing last night and the gym really doesn't have heat. So it is like a big tin box, when cold outside, you feel it in the gym - minus the wind. So it was probably 15 degrees in the gym last night. Playing ball like that, after a while works, but it takes a while for you to feel the basketball in your hands.

I will make it next week.

Google Reader Dashboard Widget - Dashboard - Blogs & Forums (20070306)I got a link from Apple.com the other day. How nice of them... I believe these links are crawled and indexed by Google, so I guess it helps on that front.

I got it by submitting my Google Reader Dashboard Widget that I launched last week to Apple's Dashboard Widget site.

The widget was soon added over here and as you can see, they linked to RustyBrick, my company, with a nice clean and visible link.

Widgets are often a good way to build links. Why?

(1) You get links from Apple and others
(2) You get people using your tools
(3) Others may enhance it and link to yo
(4) Users may love you for it and blog about it

So that is how I got my link from Apple.

I Hired A Sidekick

250px-BatmanRobinI am pretty excited, I actually hired a person to help me with my day to day stuff at RustyBrick. I guess a sidekick, if you will. Who is this person? Well, I won't say until this he or she starts working at RustyBrick.

There was no real job opening for this position. I received an email last week asking if the person's skills can be of use to me. I said, I am not sure, so we meet on Sunday morning to discuss. After interviewing the applicant, I decided to make an offer yesterday.

The applicant accepted.

What will be the roles of this "sidekick" position? Honestly, I am not a 100% sure yet. I am hoping that this individual will help me with the stuff I do every day and maybe even more. So far, I think the roles will be:

I won't be spilling the name of this new hire. I can say, this person has been recently out there in the industry, blogging and writing articles that you may have read. So the name might not be new to you. But I know this person has tons of potential and can grow tremendously in a short time.

It is funny that I am very excited about this, when less than a week ago, I had no idea a position like this was even open.

Bloglines Wins This Apple Safari User

blogo225x50.gifI gave Google Reader a shot against Bloglines, and I believe I gave it a fair shot against Bloglines but ultimately, my RSS reader will remain to be Bloglines (at least for the time being).

To make things fair, I put a Google Reader toolbar bookmark right next to my Bloglines bookmark. I created a Google Reader Dashboard Widget Notifier to place right next to the Bloglines notifier. And I tested using both for about two weeks.

My only issue with Google Reader is that it seriously hogs resources on my Apple.

Rendering Google Reader items in Safari is no fun. I have a super fast computer, tons of RAM, top of the line. But either Safari has major issues with rendered JavaScript and AJAX or Google Reader is written poorly. Either way, and Ill assume it is Safari's fault, Bloglines does not have the same problem.

So until either Safari fixes their JavaScript issues (which I know they have) or Google Reader reduces some of the JavaScript they use to make a sweet web based RSS reader, I will be sticking with Bloglines.

I do like a lot of things about Google Reader; such as the list view versus the expanded view tab and many more things but it is not enough for me to switch.

My default browser has to run quickly with my RSS reader. RSS speeds up my life, I can't let it slow me down.

Purim (פורים) Review 2007

Purim 2007Yesterday was the holiday of Purim (פורים). Purim is a happy holiday for the Jewish people, because if you read the the story of Esther you will see things turned out A-OK for us.

Saturday night is when we read the Megillah. Which is nice, since normally, you stay in synagogue after evening services to hear the Megillah but you are still fasting for the 45 minutes of reading the Megillah. Since the fast fell out on Shabbat, we moved the fast forward to Thursday and read the Megillah on Saturday night, and celebrated Purim Sunday.

Technically, today is Shushan Purim.

I live in a very very jewish area and you don't want to be on the streets on Purim, because it is a mad house. Seriously, you have kids and adults driving and walking around all dressed up; some as clowns, some as bears, some as queens, some as soldiers and so on. Some even dress up their cars, some rent limos for the day. People go around giving friends and family mishloach manot (gifts of food) and charity to the poor (more info on that here). They often drink at their friends and some get a bit too drunk, hence why some rent drivers and limos.

I was at work in the morning.

I got home about 1:30pm and my wife and I dropped of mishloach manot to friends. Then we went to my parents for Seudat Purim, I am still full from that. Ours was a bit like Thanksgiving meal, but without the football.

That was my purim and the picture above is my niece, all dressed up. :)

Geo News, META, Keywords, Sitemaps, Viagra, PageRank, YSM, Censorship, BBC & YouTube

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

Today I looked into how Google News is localized. I also wrote that the order of META tags really does not matter. Some tips on keywords lists have been posted. I looked at the mobile sitemaps patent application. Google tends to rank well for Viagra in Yahoo! Search UK. Was there a Google PageRank update? Yahoo! Search Marketing no longer allows grandfathered bids. Check out the unofficial Google censorship FAQ. Google finally landed a big content deal for YouTube with the BBC.

Crazy Skydiving Accident

Ever jump out of a plane? I didn't either. Ever want to? Never really thought about it.

British skydiver Michael Holmes almost died after his parachute did not deploy. His friend caught it all on tape. The video above is the one from YouTube but this video is way more intense, of the same accident.

12,000ft to earth after both his parachutes failed, saying goodbye to the world... and hitting the ground with a sickening thud at 80mph.

Now, do you want to go skydiving?

"God Provides" - Man Attempts To Cash Check From God For $50K

Checks CashedMan Tries to Cash $50K Check From God from SFGate.com shows how Kevin Russell tried to cash a check at a Chase Bank, that was from " "King Savior, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Servant."

In the Jewish orthodox world, there is a saying.

God Provides

There are many jokes that go along with that. For example, a young married man who may learn in yeshiva, and make very little money, may be asked - so how do you support your family. He would answer, "G-d provides." His father-in-law, who is standing next to him at the moment says, "it is OK, you don't have to call me your god."

Back to the article, this man may still be in Lake County Jail, if you want to visit him.

Just amazing!

NOYDIR & Rankings, Digg Links, 0.02% Fraud, YPN Compliance, adCenter Conversions, Panama Data

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

It is nice having slow days some time, especially on hungry days.

I explained that the No Yahoo Directory tag will have zero effect on your search rankings. I showed a case study of how a popular Digg can build links quickly. Click fraud is only two-tenths of a percent, according to Google. More YPN compliance manager warnings went out. Microsoft adCenter is reporting inflated conversion figures. Avenue A shared Panama data with us.

Fast of Esther - תענית אסתר - Hungry Day

Today is תענית אסתר, pronounced Ta'anit Ester. Ta'anit means fast - so it is the fast of Esther today. It comes from Megillah (Book) of Esther. Esther and the Jewish people fasted while Ahasuerus (אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ), the king of Persia, was in charge and Haman was pretty influential.

It is a very long story - you can learn about it at Wikipedia.

In short, today we fast - do not eat, to commemorate Esther's fast. In fact, the true fast is this Saturday, but since Saturday is Shabbat, we push the fast forward to today, Thursday. Most fast days, if they fall out on Shabbat, we do not fast - but some we do.

Also check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_of_Esther.

Purim (פורים) follows תענית אסתר where children (and some adults) dress up, drink, eat a big meal, give friends presents and give the poor food and money. More on Purim, on Purim (this Sunday).

We Made a Google Reader Dashboard Widget Notifier

Google Reader Dashboard WidgetAs you know, I have been testing Google Reader against Bloglines. With Bloglines, I use a Dashboard Widget to see how many items in my feeds I have not seen. I wanted the same thing for Google Reader, but the only thing available was a desktop program but not a widget.

So Ronnie, my brother, put a Google Reader Dashboard Widget together for me. It can be used by any Mac user running Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

It is a simply program that tells you the number of items you have not read in Google Reader. To use it, just go to the Google Reader Dashboard Widget page, download it, install it and plugin your Google Reader account info. Bang, it works.

I actually asked Ronnie to mimic the style of the Bloglines Widget, so that they look nice side by side. I have mine lined up like this:

Google Reader Dashboard Widget
Bloglines Dashboard Widget

So get yourself a Google Reader Dashboard Widget.
