There was a PR update over the weekend. YPN's ads are getting bad reviews. We talked about Google Audio ads. I tested Pay Per Action text link ads. Should AdSense add allowed domain feature? Yahoo bought Right Media. adCenter upgraded over weekend. Google Checkout's listing is looking off. I explained how the nofollow is handled. Yahoo's VP left. Google responded to the Click Quality Council. Wikipedia and double standards? Google placed Chili in Argentina. Google Transit messed up in a funny way.

My Video Interview at SES New York by WebProNews

That is Mike McDonald from WebProNews interviewing me at SES NY a few weeks ago on Ask.com's Edison project and the new auto-discover on Sitemaps.

One complaint, whoever posted the video doesn't know I am from the Search Engine Roundtable. :)

Add Search Engine Roundtable As Technorati Favorite & Don't Win a Nintendo Wii

tech-fav-1.pngAndy Beal is throwing a contest to get people to add his site as a Technorati favorite. While he is giving away one Wii to a lucky reader, I won't be doing that.

If you love me or hate me or just want me to stop talking about this. Then... Please add my search blog, Search Engine Roundtable as your Technorati favorite.

How do I do this? Go to http://technorati.com/faves/?add=http://www.seroundtable.com or just click here. You may need to sign up and I know, it requires work, but just do it, please.

I currently have 58 members, so I hope to get a bunch more, please. I won't ask for this on the main search blog.

My VIP Cleaners: Cleaners & Your Door Step

my vip cleanersOne thing I do a lot of, is picking up or dropping off the cleaners. I don't do it every week, my wife also does it, so whoever puts it off long enough for it to bother them, will likely do it.

My brother-in-law (he is the one who posts negative comments on the blog here), told me about My VIP Cleaners. This is a service that you call or email (love email) to pick up your stuff and clean it for you. So you email them, I have stuff to be cleaned, they pick it up from your house (even if you are not home) or office, clean it, and return it a few days later. You can also go on a schedule. Every Monday and Thursday they will come to my location and clean my clothing for me.

The delivery fee is nothing, they only charge for the laundering. And the prices are very competitive with what is around here:

Laundered Shirts (hanger): $1.25
Laundered Shirts (boxed): $1.35
Blouse: $4.75
Pants: $4.50
Skirt: $4.75
Dress: $8.95 & UP
Sweater: $4.50
Sports Jacket: $5.50
Two-Piece Suit: $8.95
Tie: $3.00
Wash & Fold: $1.25 lb.

What is also funny, is that the President of the company is the son of a friend of my father and mother. So why not give them business. Looks like they cover a lot of areas in the NY, NJ area.

I'll let you know if the clothing comes back in one piece, but what I have heard so far, is only positive.

Added Twitter Badge to Blog Side Bar

After playing with Twitter for almost two months now, I have finally decided to add the Twitter badge to the sidebar of this site.

On the right hand side you should be able to see my Twitter status. Normally, I will post a Twitter message every now on then, on small things. Such as:

  • eating lunch
  • got to work
  • searching forums
  • on phone call
  • showering
  • etc.

You know, things you don't care to know about me.

But you you do care to know those types of things about me, then you can. They are all less than 140 character messages.

EXTRA: Jason Calacanis has a numerous post on link baiting rules. They are awesome, but that is not the point I am making. Huge respect for Jason tracking all links and mentions of his name via "various RSS alerts, Technorati, Google blog search, Bloglines, etc." It is nice to see. But Jason, are you documenting them all like I am with my Daily Link Finds? If so, curious how?

Got MotorStorm For PlayStation 3

motorstormI read this Wired article on a PlayStation 3 game named MotorStorm. It is basically a racing game, specifically designed for the advanced and high processing power of the PS3.

From Wired:

As I said, Motorstorm is all about advanced physics. The graphics are excellent, sure. The dirt looks like dirt, etc. But the key feature here isn't that the bikes look like bikes, it's that they bounce like them. It's annoying when your bike skids out of control into a rock and explodes, but it's entertaining because you could see exactly where you lost control and understand what you could have done to stop that. There's been a lot of effort put in to make everything feel right, and you can really see the difference.

So I bought the game on Amazon from a gift certificate I got from a friend in the search industry.

The main issue that Wired brings up, and I agree, is that you don't "feel" this. The controllers don't shake or rattle or jerk. The Wired writer calls out Logitech to build a 3rd party controller that does just that; "So yeah, I'd really like to see a controller re-design or a third party pad with less stupid analog triggers. Logitech? Can we get a little help, here?"

Outside of that, the graphics are crazy and it is fun. I played about 10 races in the past 2 days. Each took about five minutes... I am on race two of level one still.

Fun game...

Oh and the mud does splatter on the screen when someone cuts you off, it is really annoying....

News Google, Panama, AskSense, Vouchers, Local, Ask, AdSense, Malware, Personalized, Yahoo News, Portfolio.com

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I took screen captures of Google News results inside Google Web search. Volume is down since the launch of Panama. Ask.com goes contextual. Google Maps updated some data. AdWords vouchers are not for resale. Ask is better than Google. AdSense gets extremely personal and AdWords get nasty. Google personalized home page gets antisocial. Yahoo News moves images and videos to the top. Portfolio releases outdates executive information.

Is Jason Dowdell Stalking Me?

dowdell-pic.jpgI track the links pointing to my sites in for my Daily Link Finds write ups. And one link I found disturbed me a bit...

Technorati Widget Survey Enlightening by Jason Dowdell, someone I have known for a few years now, scared me..

He wrote:

I've learned a lot about Barry in recent months by simply watching his profile automatically update with the song he's currently listening to. That simple widget (if you will allow me to call it that) has given me insight into Barry's love of Southern and Classic Rock-N-Roll and it has come about from automation.

What! Stop watching me!

In fun, you could have learned the same by just reading this blog. ;-)

Jason, hope all is well!

I Did Not Just Eat That!

Last night was the guys night out thing. Last time we had it, I wrote Blue Lips, Smurfs & Kosher Shushi Boats.

We went to the same place, a shushi place in Teaneck, NJ. I don't like shushi, which some of you may know.

On the menu, they had a vegi burger, so I decided to give it a try. Big mistake.

It came to me, and it looks pretty good, presentation wise...

Vegi Burger -- Uchhh
taken on treo

But when you open the lid, it is pure green!
Vegi Burger -- Uchhh
taken on treo

It tasted so bad. I don't like green things. I don't like vegetables. I am a chicken and potatoes type of guy. Give me chicken, give me potatoes and I am happy. I eat plenty of things but not shushi, not vegi burgers...

Some of the other guys tried to eat the so called burger and they failed. Even those who claim they enjoy vegi burgers said this one was incredibly bad.

I did eat the fries and the bread (which seemed whole wheatish). The fries were a bit extreme, very spicy but a bad spicy, not a good one.

At the end of the meal, I thought to myself. Did I just eat that? Oh no! Well, I didn't. I didn't finish the vegi burger, I didn't finish the fries, I didn't finish the salad on the plate. And for me to not finish the food on my plate --- well, that is a rare sight.

I am putting my foot down. Next guys night out, we are not doing shushi. If you want shushi, go with your wife on a couple night out. Leave the shushi to girls. We go to a steak and chicken place next time and eat like men!

I am still feeling the pain from that vegi burger...

American Express & Citi Card Travel Companion Fare Rules Stink!

AMEX & Citi Card Travel Awards StinkI feel ripped off! I feel like AMEX is ripping me off again and I feel like the Citi Card I just got for the purpose of the companion fare for my flights is also ripping me off! Note this was based on my buddy's recommendation - big thanks! ;-)

I feel ripped off!

So I am booking some flights for my June journey, specifically for the SMX Seattle event and I got nothing! I am taking Tamar with me, to help with the coverage. This is the perfect opportunity for a companion ticket.

It mets all the criteria AMEX and Citi Card set forth. The tickets are $299 or more. They are domestic. I, the card holder, is flying. Etc.

I first call AMEX travel. I am redirected to the special companion fare booking team. I give them the preferred flights I want to go on. They first hang up on me after me holding for about 15 minutes (no worries, I did two blog entries in that time). I call back, then learn that that flight is blacked out for those times... The only possible alternative is for me to leave the next day at 9am and land at 5pm - what! miss a whole day! Not going to happen.

I call Citi Card travel. They are quick to respond, which is nice. But the flight to Seattle is not eligible since there is a flight with several top overs that is less than $299. Of course I asked, but I want a direct flight and there are no direct flights for less than $299. He said, you are right, but the requirements are for any flight, no matter stop overs. Good bye!

I tried everything I could think of.

So I feel ripped off!

I booked the two tickets on AMEX's web site for full fare.

I feel ripped off.

Bill Gates on Mac Ads

Bill Gates on Mac CommercialsAdvertising Age interviewed Bill Gates (chief Microsoft). At the end of the interview, they asked Mr. Gates about the Mac Ads. This is too funny.

GARFIELD: I want to ask you one more thing: Those Mac ads -- how do you feel about the John Hodgman character?

GATES: I can't comment on someone else's ad.

GARFIELD: OK ... but he's you.

GATES: Yeah, I'm not gonna comment on someone else's ad.

GARFIELD: OK, well, Bill Gates, thank you so much for joining us.

(Silence)

GARFIELD: Can I just have a clean goodbye?

(Silence)

GARFIELD: OK, can you just say goodbye? Thank you or goodbye or something like that?

GATES: Goodbye.

My Best Blogger Mug from MarketingSherpa Broke!

IMG_2527.JPGI walked into the office one day and notice the handle of my MarketingSherpa Best Blogger 2006 mug, that I won, was broken off.

Pretty sad...

All the effort I put into blogging, to only have all that I have to show for it, break!

Just kidding.

One day, I will just glue it back on... If I remember.

I guess I will have to try hard and win the 2007 mug...

More on the awards we won at our awards page. Honestly, this is a huge reason why I blog. It seems people care and think we are good at it. So it keeps me personally going. Maybe it is sad that I need this, but it is nice to know people care.

Thanks for reading!

The E-Z Pass For Airports: Fly Clear

Fly ClearIn NY and other stats they have this device for your car that allows you to drive through toll booths without stopping your car to pay. In NY and NJ (and other states) it is called E-Z Pass and I love it.

What if you can have the same thing at airport security lines?

As reported at OhGizmo, Fly Clear is currently offering a special pass that kind of does that at select terminals.

Travelers who join the Clear® Registered Traveler program are pre-screened for security and provided with a biometric card which will allow them to pass through security faster, with more predictability and less hassle. Take the first step toward stress free travel today.

- You'll know that it'll take just a few minutes to get through security; no more worrying about unpredictably long lines.
- You'll enjoy a designated security lane with special benefits.
- You'll be helped by our attendants and concierges as you go through the Clear lane.
- You can use your Clear card at all US registered traveler airports at no additional cost.

Clear is fast, convenient and secure. As a Clear member, you'll be in control of your own time and your own schedule. Clear's first year price is $99.95 (includes a $28.00 TSA vetting fee). You can lock-in this rate by purchasing a two year membership for $199.90 or three years for $299.85.

Currently, the terminals that support it include; Orlando (MCO), New York JFK Term. 7, Indianapolis (IND), San José (SJC), and Cincinnati (CVG).

When this becomes more universal across the US, I may sign up for it.

Thanks Judah!

Today, I spent way too much time blogging, way too much...

I looked at if too much content can be a bad thing for SEO. The search engines celebrated Earth day. Why would a robots.txt file be found in the supplemental index? AdSense spiked to $1 billion in earnings and revenue share is at highest point. Virginia Tech in Google News entertainment section. Is SEO a problem for SMO? American Blinds keyword trademark disputes continue. The debate over paid link lags. Sudan blocked Google Earth. Google's Mac blog was hacked, while users share their password in Google Calendar. Today is Israel's 59th Birthday - Yom Ha'atzmaut or Israeli Independence Day

barry cartoon israelNot fully a religion thing, some may argue - but I am not getting into that. In any event, today is Israel's 59th birthday. Israel has become an independent state on 5th day of Iyar (ה' באייר), which is today on the Hebrew Calendar.

Ask.com has a smart answer for it and Wikipedia has a lot more information on it.

Yom Ha'atzmaut (Hebrew: יום העצמאות yom hā-‘aṣmā’ūṯ), Israeli Independence Day, commemorates the declaration of independence of Israel in 1948.

It falls on the 5th of the Jewish lunar month Iyar, celebrating the declaration of the state of Israel by David Ben-Gurion in Tel Aviv on May 14, 1948, and the end of the British Mandate in Israel.

It is always preceded by Yom Hazikaron, the Israel fallen soldiers Remembrance Day on the 4th of Iyar.

An official ceremony is held every year on Mount Herzl on the eve of Yom Ha'atzmaut. The ceremony includes a speech by the speaker of the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament), a dramatic presentation, a ritual march of soldiers carrying the Flag of Israel, forming elaborate structures (such as a Menorah, Magen David and a number which represents the age of Israel) and the lighting of twelve beacons (each for every one of the Tribes of Israel). Every year a dozen Israeli citizens, who made a significant contribution in a selected area, are invited to light the beacons.

The Cartoon Barry Mac Icon

I finally tried to convert my Cartoon Barry icon into a proper Mac icon.

How did I do it? I followed the instructions on Macapper.com. In short:

(1) Used Photoshop to edit my image into a PNG file with transparency.
(2) Used Icon Composer in Apple Developer tools to create a ICNS file file.
(3) Used Icns2Rsrc to convert that file into a RSRC.
(4) Pressed Apple key plus I and then copied the image to my folder.

Here it is.. You can download it if you like also.

The icon looks like the image in the picture below.

Barry & Car's Excellent Adventure at Lexus Service Station

As I told you, I had to get my bulb fixed on my car. I had a 1:30 appointment... I never described the Lexus service center...

You drive up to the Lexus dealer, right off Route 17, in Ramsey NJ. You pull up to the service center and drive into a waiting room for the car - I call it a car waiting room. A valet guy takes down your information and tells you to go into the Lexus service station on the left. I walk in, and a secretary greets you. You then are told to meet with a service representative who takes down the problem with the car and has you sign a document or two. He then asked me to wait in the human waiting room.

So I go there, this is my first time waiting, I normally get a loaner car...

It is a sweet room. LCD screen, free wifi, free bottled water, free sodas, free cappuccino/coffee machine, free cake and free deli sandwiches. So while I waited, I decided to take video on my Treo.

I was sitting in the right front corner, and I panned left. Then I walked up to the food.

While I was there, about 30 minutes, I saw a guy come in three different times to refill the food and empty the garbage. During those 30 minutes, only three people took anything from the table.

Nice place. I should have taken video of the car waiting room.

First Drive With Top Down in 2007

Yesterday was a sweet day, just sweet. It was in the mid 70s, the sun was out and I had places to drive. Well, my wife had places for me to drive... ;-)

So I convinced her to let me drive with the top down. FYI, she doesn't like bugs...

Lexus SC430

Visibility when driving with the top down is more than perfect.

These are the times I love this car, when it is not snowing. Otherwise, I take my wife's car to work.

But to ruin a good drive, I notice my rear lamp indicator goes on. My right break light needs a new bulb... So I have an appointment to fix it, under warranty, today.

It is about 77 degrees outside now, clear, sunny skies. So I think I will drive to the Lexus dealer with the top down.

Daily Link Finds GraphicThis is the April 20th issue of a daily post that will contain links to commentary of the posts over at the Search Engine Roundtable. All links I find throughout the day that ad some commentary to the posts written over at the Search Engine Roundtable, will be in the Daily Link Finds. The purpose is two fold: (1) To help people find discussion around our articles and (2) To thank people for linking to us. How do I find these links? Only one way, via a Google Blog Search link command, so make sure that (1) you are in Google Blog Search and (2) link to us.

LinkedIn, Google History, Search Categories, GBP, News Duplicate, GOOG & YHOO, Marratech, FTC, Tools, Pics

This may have been the busiest week in search ever - or maybe it just felt that way. So what happened today...

I reported that LinkedIn isn't labeling their AdSense ads. Google is now tracking all of your history, not just your search history. Google is testing grouping search results. Google UK Merchants need to accept GBP only. Google does a snappy job on duplicate news articles. GOOG and YHOO reported earnings. Google bought Marratech. There are new SEO tools available. Battelle chatted with Microsoft's lawyer on DoubeClick. Tamar wrote the weekly search buzz and I wrote the Search in Pictures column.

Good weekend all!

My Three Favorite Pictures from "Search In Pictures"

So I have been doing this weekly column at Search Engine Land named Search in Pictures. Basically, over the course of the week, I collect images that are related to Google, Ask.com, Yahoo and Live.com and write an article through them. I try to make it read like a story. In any event, my last column; Search In Pictures: Easter; Search Fun, Google Power, Art & Signs, is now up, but here are my three favorite pictures from it.

#1:

Whoever played this prank is hilarious!

#2:

Bike riding in your office, and look at the color of that bike - Google colors.

#3:

These are the talk of the town, from Ask.com.

Father Makes Son Wear Sign Reading "I Abused & Sold Drugs"

marijuana leafThere is no question that drug use amongst teens is a problem, big problem in America. One father took an usual approach.

Dad Makes Son Wear Sign for Using Drugs from SFGate.com reports that a father made his son wear a sign that read, "I abused and sold drugs."

Why, because his son abused and sold drugs and his Dad wanted to send him a message.

"I'm not out here doing this to humiliate my son," the father told WATE-TV as the teenager walked up and down the sidewalk Wednesday in front of Cedar Bluff Middle School.

"I'm doing this because I love him," he said. "We do have an extreme drug problem in America, and maybe it's time for extreme measures that parents need to take to monitor this problem that we have."

What is also pretty crazy is that the father learned of his son's drug use through reading his son's MySpace page!

I guess it could have been worse. His dad could have made him ride this bicycle to school every day.

;-) Thanks Judah for the YouTube video.

I'm (Barry) A Hurricane

IMG_2502.JPGTodd Mintz informed me that I am a hurricane this year! I was flattered, seriously flattered. I thought he was talking about my writing. But it turns out he was being very literal.

The Hurricane Names for 2007 includes "Barry." So yes, technically, my name, "Barry" is a name up for grabs on the 2007 list of hurricane names.

Wish me luck. I am hoping to be a big one!

Other hurricane names up for grabs this year include; Andrea, Chantal, Dean, Erin, Felix, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Noel, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, and Wendy.

The picture above is from the SES Miami show back in July of last year. One day there was a pretty big storm. It took down that poor tree. :-(

GStumble, W Central Update, adCenter Quality, Gmail, Froogle, YouTube, AdSense, Experian & Hitwise, China

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

I have decided to now include all articles at the Search Engine Roundtable in the list of topics. Why? Because I edit the posts and ensure they are OK to post before posting. I also tend to do the initial research for those posts.

Google began stumbling. Google improves anchor text reports but Webmaster Central went offline for a bit. adCenter's new quality score generated poor results. Gmail disabled accounts again. Froogle is now Google Product Search. Google has a YouTube channel. Google doesn't like traffic exchange programs. Keyword research tools were explored. Experian acquired Hitwise. Yahoo was sued by a Chinese couple.

Also, I accidently converting SER's full feed to a short feed. It will be fixed soon, sorry about that.

Automatically Posting Twitter Message From Your Blog's RSS Feed

rss-2-twitter.pngSo I have honestly kept on using Twitter and it is working out. I have been trying to set up a Twitter account for the Search Engine Roundtable, and automate the posting to Twitter.

So if I write a blog post at the Search Engine Roundtable, it would automatically twit that post headline and URL in that account. Just go to http://twitter.com/seroundtable and click "add as friend."

Success!

RSS 2 Twitter, which has been down for the past three days, is now back up. So I set it up and it worked.

Basically, you to to RSS 2 Twitter and at the bottom of the screen you enter your Twitter username and password.

RSS 2 Twitter Screen Cap

After that, it asks you to plug in the specific RSS feed, which I did on this page.

RSS 2 Twitter Screen Cap

And then it went through my most current posts and pushed them up to Twitter. So now it is safe, to add http://twitter.com/seroundtable as a friend.

Just go to http://twitter.com/seroundtable and click "add as friend."

I also set it up for my personal twitter account at http://twitter.com/rustybrick. I would like to apologize to the 80 or so of you that got blasted with the past 20 or so blog posts from my personal blog. It will clear up shortly.

There are two other services I am aware of that does this.
- Twitter Feed
- Stammy Script

Dark Room Filled With Coders

Recently, one of the coder rooms here at RustyBrick went dark, literally. I walked by and noticed they are working with the lights off.

Dark RustyBrick Coder Room

I know lots of coders that prefer to work in the dark. Better on the eyes.

At least they are not sleeping. :)

It is funny, since we basically have no sales people - we are in a very quiet office. All you hear is typing all day. Even in that room which has four people, you don't hear much. They each listen to their music, on their headphones and type away.

They do get phone calls but I suspect the music from their headphones blocks out the noise from that.

The Geek Shower: Air Clean

wind showerJudah showed me this blog post on having a wind shower. Check out this box.

How To Take an Air Shower:

  1. Step inside

  2. Press big red (might be green or blue) button

  3. Let air hit you

  4. Let device suck up the bad air

The device will remove about 90% of pollen and dust from your body.

Cost: ~$16,000

And I thought I would never talk about showering on this blog again!

Have You Dreamt Of SEOs Since? Matt?

DreamsI got home early from my basketball game and was thinking, now what? Go to bed? Nah... Dreaming... But that led me to think about the last time Matt Cutts had SEO Dreams. I was wondering, if Matt dreamt about SEO since? Have you?

How about others. I know I have dreamt about SEO and dreamt about blogging. Have you?

OK, now that I posted this. Now what? :-)

Ill run through more feeds.

Handle some more RB stuff.

Then maybe go into bed and watch the Rangers game. Oh wait, I think House is on later.

I wrote about some early results with Google Pay Per Action. Did you know you can potentially use Google Voice Search for prank calls. Google has been spotted deducting AdSense revenue caused by invalid clicks. adCenter has added a quality component to ad rank. I blogged on anti-trust concerns with Google and DoubleClick. Briefcase / Porta Potty: Interesting Idea

Gotta Go Briefcase Rodd Miller ©2007-v2Judah pointed me to a blog referencing the Gotta Go Briefcase.

Yes, you open the briefcase, pull out the paper, sit down and do your business.

When you are done, make sure to wipe and off you go.

This is a real invention...

The water proof briefcase retains an elegant yet durable appearance with high quality Mahogany leather, a strong lightweight aluminum internal structure, and stainless steel bowl with generously equipped sealing lid. Quietly and discreetly go about your personal "business" anywhere you please with a fold out leather privacy panel which tucks away neatly to the side when you have completed your multi-tasking. A toilet paper dispenser easily swings out and can be conveniently stored in an inconspicuous storage compartment under the padding [for added discretion] when not in use.

Included with the Gotta Go Briefcase are a small tray with cup holder (clips onto the privacy panel), attachable vanity mirror, and refillable hand sanitizing dispenser. The newspaper and air freshener are not included but recommended.

Hmmm....

  4. McAfee Internet Security, Symantec Norton Internet Security - I am a Mac guy, no worries here
  5. Real Networks (Progressive Networks) RealPlayer - agreed
  6. Bonzi Buddy - what?
  7. MySpace - lol

  9. Microsoft Windows Update - true but necessary
  10. Apple QuickTime for Windows - no comment

Matting Links, Yellow Ads, Dodging Google, Google Audio Springs, Sitemaps Pings, Boggling, Pulse

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

First day back in the normal routine here. I won't be posted the daily link finds today, but I will start collecting them today and post the past day's daily links tomorrow. So here we go, search today, through my finger tips...

Matt is undercutting (sorry, had to do that) the SEO community by setting fear with paid links, the 2007 debate has begun on paid links. Click through rate is lower since Google went with yellow ads. DodgeBall founders have left Google. Google Audio is now supported by many radio station systems. I listed some of the URLs to ping with your search Sitemaps. Chris Boggs experts at Search Engine Watch. Finally, the live Search Pulse is archived.

Digging Out - Much Better Over Weekend Vs. Friday

ShovelI always dread the day after a conference, coming back to the office with piles of things left for you to do.

  • Returning voicemails (I hate voicemails!)
  • Returning emails that had to wait until I got in the office
  • Going through mail
  • Handling billing things
  • Sending out proposals
  • And so on...

This year, SES NY, didn't turn out too well. It started on Passover. So I had to be away from the office for a full week. Sunday night through Friday afternoon. That is just killer! Even for a guy who is incredibly mobile equipped. I did cheat, I came into the office at nights and sometimes in the AM before heading to the conference (if I woke up early enough).

Typically, a conference like SES NY, starts on a Monday and ends on a Thursday afternoon. This time it started Tuesday and ended on Friday afternoon - most likely to give those who observe Passover, one more day.

So instead of coming back to the office on a Friday, you come back on a Monday.

I spoke to a few people about this and they all preferred coming back on a Monday. It gives them the weekend to recover from the late night parties and the conference and catching up on work.

In any event, even though I spent a lot of the weekend catching up. There are still things that must wait until the work week to follow up on.

Car Accidents 13% Higher on Friday The 13ths

Car Accident April 13I was listening to the radio this morning and Jim Kerr said that there was a report out that car accidents are more likely on Friday the 13ths. He said 13% more likely.

Pretty interesting....

So I tracked down a recent article on this to get more info...

Norwich Union researched claims over a five-year period, during which time there were six Friday the 13ths, and discovered that the number of claims on these days was significantly higher (13%) when compared to other days of the month. Conversely, all other 13ths had less than the average number of claims.

"Our analysis on dangerous days for driving has given some credence to people's superstitions regarding Friday the 13th," says Norwich Union's Nigel Bartram said. "Though it's difficult to say for certain why this is, one reason could be that people alter their driving behaviour in response to a perceived 'unlucky' day.

Probably because some people are more nervous on these days. Nervous drivers are dangerous drivers. So if more than 13% of those drivers are superstitious, then that kinda makes sense.

An Empty Press Room - Ah!

I got here early this morning, so someone sent a guard to open the press room for me.

I have a press room all to myself!

First time ever.

This is nice.

SES NYC Press Room

Now I can do some blogging.

And someone just turned out all the lights, but the Internet works, I think, so I am good.

Update: Next person in the room is Lisa Barone and then followed by the people who manage the press room from Incisive.

The Most Useful Item in the Search Engine Strategies Tote Bag

Right now I am in the Hilton at SES NY, the big search conference. Normally, I skim through the items in the popular but very lame and standard SES tote bag. This time TMP wins for the most useful item found in that bag.

They gave out this little card that opens up into a guide to SES NY.

SES Pocket Guide Rocks

When you open the card, it shows you an overview of the sessions, it has the exhibit floor laid out for you and finally, has a map of NYC on the back.

SES Pocket Guide Rocks

I am often carrying this stuff around with me, minus the NYC map. So having it on one card, rocks.

Check TMP out at http://tmpdm.com/ses/ - you guys win big for this!

Destroyed Nephews at Monopoly

monopolyMy sister, brother-in-law and their four boys are at my parents this week for Passover. I was there this Friday night through Saturday night.

So I played Monopoly with my two oldest nephews. I think they are 12 and 9.

I totally destroyed them.

I bought several properties. Then I made an offer to my 9 year-old nephew to purchase St. James Place and Ventnor Avenue for two of the railroads and $100. He agreed and I was then able to purchase hotels on the orange properties, which I did right away. It paid off, I earned enough money back right away to purchase several homes on the yellow properties, and then finally enough to purchase hotels on that properties. It was then just time until the 9 year old was bankrupt. Then it was on to the 12 year old. He landed on Marvin Gardens with not enough money to pay the full amount. So he sold me States Avenue for $200. I purchased hotels on the purple properties and then waited.

I am ruthless...

Why I Blog?

Nathan tagged me asking me why I blog.

So why I blog? Why I blog? Why I blog?

(1) To keep track of things digitally.
(2) To remember things better.
(3) To be part of a larger community.
(4) To keep my fingers active.
(5) Most importantly... To help others. (I hope)

Let's see, I need to tag people asking them why they blog...

- Danny, since he rarely updates his personal blog
- Judah or Barry G....
- Ben P. lets here it
- Chris Boggs - don't be shy.
- Todd so I can see one more blog entry

Building a Town in Second Life

Yes, Second Life is Nuts! I once gave it a try in November of last year, but after it wasting literally 4 hours of my time without blinking, I had to drop it cold turkey.

During those wasted hours, I tried to build things. Simple things like balls, cones, boxes. I couldn't imagine building out a whole town in less than a week!

A Scoble twitter led me to a post named Rapid Architectural Prototyping in Second Life explaining, "Second Life architect Lordfly Digeridoo has posted a great video of the process of designing a site plan in Second Life for a real-world site in Ypsilanti, Michigan."

I honestly would love to learn how to do that. Wow!

Always Thought I Would Be Good at Playing Guitar

Barry Cartoon GuitarI was listening to the radio this morning and I remember that I always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Never really did. Of course, I know a few songs here and there from memory and friends. But I never learned notes, etc.

However, I always felt that I would be good at playing guitar.

Why?

I am a fast typer. No, I have pretty quick hands. I am very coordinated. I pick things up quickly.

Maybe one day I'll do it, but again, time is an issue. I do regret not learning it when I was a kid. Oh well.

At least the cartoon version of me can get down with his guitar!

Or maybe I should get Guitar Hero for my PlayStation? I have no idea how the game works and if you can learn from it.

Or maybe not...

First! First! First!

First! First! First! at Chris Pirillo, spotted via Twitter is hilarious for any blogger.

Basically, there are those who don't write at blogs but comment at blogs.

Some always want to be the first person to comment at the most important posts across the industry.

You know who I am talking about.... You know...

Check out the video named First! First! First! at Chris Pirillo.

Things Should Be Slow Here Over Next Week or So

Things should be slow here over the next week or so...

Why?

(1) Passover is throughout Tuesday night. Monday and Tuesday, I will be offline again.

(2) SES NY starts Tuesday. I will miss the first day, but I will be covering the conference with the rest of the crew starting Wednesday. It will last the whole week, including Friday.

So I am not sure how much I will be posting here...

But I am sure I will surprise you!

Google Reader Is Now My Primary RSS Reader

Google ReaderThis goes back a bit...

Ask.com's Bloglines was annoying one day, so I decided to pin Bloglines vs. Google Reader. Ultimately Bloglines won because Google Reader has performance issues in Safari. So I set Google Reader as my backup RSS reader.

But that all changed recently...

After hearing Google Reader fixed the Safari memory leak, I decided to give it a second take. And I have now made my decision to make Google Reader my primary reader and make Bloglines my secondary reader.

Why? Speed. Google Reader is now quick - CPU wise and also is quicker to use.

Thanks Google!

The Morning After Pill For Flying

Achhhh....

Just got in from STL this AM. I actually parked my car in daily parking, which turned out to be a smart move.

In any event, waking up at 4:30am, getting on a flight to LGA that takes about two hours and landing in NY at about 9:15am is not much to complain about.

Heck, my brother is at his in-laws and for him to get back, it will take two planes, and a full day of traveling.

But there is this weird, tired, lagged feeling I get after flying. I just hate it.

Hope to recoup tonight.

Back Tomorrow Noonish

I hope to be back in the swing of things by Thursday at noonish. Hope...

I have some posts scheduled to go live tomorrow.

Thanks to all the guys who pitched in yesterday and the day before.

Good night.

I uploaded a Twitter background image to my profile. Here is what it looks like on my screen.

RustyBrick & Search Engine Roundtable Twitter Design

I used an old PowerPoint presentation background that looked like this:

RustyBrick & Search Engine Roundtable Background

I had to move up the "Search Engine Roundtable" piece to the top right of the design, to make it visible on Twitter.

I love this PPT background template.

Unexpected Google April Fools Day Present

I logged in to check my web statistics for the Search Engine Roundtable and noticed I received about 7,000 visitors from Google on the April Fools day theme. Here are some of the top keyword phrases:

  • google april fools
  • april fools google
  • google april fools jokes
  • google april fools joke
  • april fools jokes
  • google prank
  • google pranks
  • google's april fools
  • etc.

It pretty much came from only Google.

So thank you Google for the unexpected Sunday traffic!

Poor Tamar: Twitter Tells a Sad Tale of a Flight

Poor Twitter TamarPoor Tamar, aka SideKick. She began boarding the plan 3 hours ago. Then the plan was on its way 2 hours ago to only be held back.

An hour later Tamar Twitters that she is 40th to the departure. She twitters again 15 minutes later that she is allowed to use the phone since they have been on the tarmac for 1.5 hours!

About 40 minutes later, an other twitter comes from Tamar that she is still on the tarmac and extremely tired.

And now about 20 minutes later Tamar explains; "flight was going to land at 12:25...now at 2:25am.." ouch!

Good luck Tamar.... hope you make it to your destination tonight!

Not to rub it in, but my flight this morning was 25 minutes early.

Things You Notice While Driving to the Airport

I arrived at LGA and now I am sitting by the AA terminal, waiting for boarding time, which is in about 30 minutes. Those who track Twitter know that I was doing billing, payroll and other misc RustyBrick stuff last night until around midnight. When I got home, I had several things to do before my flight in the morning, the one I am waiting for now. For some reason, I couldn't sleep - so I feel a bit weird right now. As if I am not typing, but I know I am typing - blogger weirdness....

So as I connect via my treo over EVDO on my MacBook Pro I figured I tell you about my trip in.

I live in Rockland and I had to go to LGA this morning.

I leave Rockland, get on the NYS Thruway. There are like no other cars on the thruway, so the merge was incredibly easy - being that I was too tired to pay attention to up coming traffic - it worked out fairly well. I then merged onto the Palisades Parkway, to find myself worrying about cops. So I drove at a steady speed of (wont say) as I spot cop after cop hiding. I reach the George Washington Bridge tolls, where again, no traffic - because of it being Sunday. I cross over the bridge - I actually took note of the sunrise (how romantic). I being to pick up speed, I head over the Cross Bronx Expressway. I then spot a flashing lights ahead of me, two lanes blocked off. As I pass, I notice a Lexus LS with a smashed in hood and no other cars around it - besides for the tow truck and police car. I pass the accident, thinking - wow that must be expensive. I head onto the Triboro Bridge, nothing out of the ordinary. Get to LGA, park my car, and go to the airport.

Here I am.

People seem to be complaining that there is a booked flight. OK. I notice several other people that appear to be on this flight. But I keep typing as if I don't see them. The plane just arrived, they appear to be cleaning it. The pilot seems to be here. So I guess we board in 15 minutes or so.

I will be in St. Louis, yes the place with the The Largest Amoco Sign I Have Ever Seen, until Thursday morning. I will be off the Search Engine Roundtable Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. Same with Search Engine Land and this blog.

Speak to you all when I land... Happy April 1!
