Energizer Barry: 1,000th Post at Cre8asite Forums

energizer barryI just found out today that I posted my 1,000th post at Cre8asite Forums, my most favorite forum... So they created a members only thread to note the 1,000th post, which one reason why the forum rocks (so personable).

Bill called me a vortex, but Rand called me the "Energizer Bunny of search industry news." I didn't think up a way for me to dress myself like a vortex easily, so I went the Energizer Bunny (or Barry) route. Not bad, eh?

Figured it was a good time to update my post counts across blogs and forums:

Sukkot סוכות Tonight: Thursday & Friday

Tonight is the beginning of Sukkot סוכות, a holiday where we live in a temporary dwelling. If you live in a Jewish area, you may see people putting up these small weird looking rooms. They may look something like this:

Sukka

Technically, we are suppose to eat, sleep, learn, blog, etc. in the Sukka. I personally did not put up a Sukka this year because we won't be home for most of those days.

Here is a picture of people putting up Sukka's on their balconies in Brooklyn.

Sukka

Sukkot is a fun holiday. There are many more customs and rituals, but this may be the most noticeable. For more pictures of people putting up Sukka's check out Flickr.

You can read more about it at Wikipedia if you like.

I will be offline Thursday through Saturday, so please, keep the blogging slow... I won't be blogging those days also...

Search Engine Land is One of Jakob Nielsen Favorite Blogs

Jakob NielsenWow, this is awesome news. Practical ECommerce interviewed Jakob Nielsen, one of the most cited people on web topics.

They asked Mr. Nielsen to identify his favorite blogs. Of the four blogs he identified, one was Search Engine Land. The blog Danny, Greg, Chris and I manage on a day to day basis. He said:

Extremely detailed coverage of search and search engines. In fact, it’s too detailed, because they obsess over the smallest detail, which can be too much. I wish this site would abandon the linear blog format and use a more prioritized layout and information architecture to make it easier to focus on important stories and those columnists that interest me the most. Still, this is the place to go for info on the most important channel for reaching new prospects on the web — the search engines.

OK, so it wasn't all positive, but positive enough. We will take from that, maybe adapt the site a bit to make it easier to use and find content.

But it is really nice knowing that something you put so much into (over 40% of the posts on Search Engine Land are mine, but I know Danny's articles make people read there), is appreciate not by just people in your direct industry, but people who are outside your industry. Especially people as well known, cited and respected as Jakob Nielsen.

What Type of Technology Professional Liability Do You Have?

thehartford.pngI am now in the process of shopping around for new insurance for my business. I need to renew a Technology Professional Liability (E&O) plan. I was hoping to get some advice from other web development/design and SEO companies out there.

Here are some question:
(1) So which policy do you have?
(2) Why did you choose them?
(3) Are there specific exclusions a company like mine should pay attention to?
(4) How much liability and deductible do you recommend?
(5) Who would you recommend?

Thanks!

New Construction Cleaning Service Needed

I am so into search, so into search, but when it comes to local things, I am trying to avoid search for answer.

Here are some examples. When choosing a company to cut down a tree in my new backyard, I didn't want to search for "tree services" or something like that. I wanted to ask people in the local area, if they used anyone. So I asked around and got some leads and then got quotes. My mind is now made up on what I should do for that.

Right now, I am in the process of looking for cleaning companies that specialize in new construction. So a search on new construction cleaning brings up tons of organic results and tons of paid results. But who can I trust will do a good job? Oh, I should check out Google Local or Yahoo Local, or maybe Yelp to see reviews. But I did, and none have any real reviews...

Live in my area? Want to recommend a company that specializes in new construction cleaning?

Those are two of many many examples.

Is RustyBrick a Great Company?

rb-fair-banner[2]Rand asked me if I would answer some that should tell him and the world is RustyBrick is a great company or not. So why not...

Does RustyBrick Have Level 5 Leadership?
Level 5 leadership is a leader(s) that has "humility + will, ambition for the company (rather than themselves as individuals), compelling modesty, strong resolve to confront tough problems and make hard decisions, and, finally, a consistency in praising others for the company's successes and blaming themselves for its failures."

I guess I am one of the leaders of RustyBrick, the other is my brother, Ronnie who is the technology leader. I think I am somewhat humble, and I have an ambition for the company rather for myself (I think), I feel I am modest (you tell me), I don't like making hard decisions but I have to solve some problems and I never blame someone else (outside of the leaders) for company failures.

Do We Have the Right People in the Right Seats?
Tough one. Everyone has so many seats, its hard to say. We do not take the approach of hiring people without having something for them to do. So we probably do not get the grade "Great" for this one.

Do We Confront the Brutal Facts?
Same here, I guess we are too small to consider certain facts to be "brutal." Nothing great for us here, simply good.

What is Our Hedgehog Concept?
It can't just be standard consulting and coding. We need to add more, as we have. But we have way more to go. I think software applications is RB's hedgehog concept.

Have We Created a Culture of Discipline?
RB is so handoff, that I am not sure we have. I do my best to give the employees freedom. They know what they have to get done, they get it done and everyone is happy. Culture, I am not sure we have a strong culture at RB. Is it a bad thing? I don't think it's bad, I just don't think its great either.

Are We Turning the Flywheel?
We are constantly churning things out, but much of it the public won't see. We keep churning, more work leads to more work. So I guess, we kind of have a flywheel, if I understand it.

What does all this mean? See Rand's post.

Grade my company... I just can't.

QuickBooks Efficiency Review Tells Me to Buy Paper Check

quickbooksI live and die by QuickBooks.

So when I get a piece of mail from Intuit about a way to get a "complimentary efficiency review," I take it seriously.

I fill out the questions and then I am told my "efficiency results are below." I scroll down the page and guess how I can be more efficient?

Consider printing checks with QuickBooks

What! Heck, I have checks that I print with QuickBooks. How will this make me more efficient?

QuickBooks Checks: Kidding Me!

Are you kidding me! You promise to save me time with this "QuickBooks Efficiency Review" and all you do is waste my time!

You promise to show me "ways to save valuable time on administrative tasks and help run your business more efficiently." You should be ashamed.

Sketchcast - Damn Cool - Draw Movie Tool

This is awesome, a tool named Sketchcast.

It basically allows you to record yourself sketching something on your computer screen. You can add text and voice to the recording.

Ever wonder if I can draw? Just watch me:

Now, I would use this almost daily if you were allowed to embed images or videos. Imagine, uploading a video of a football play. Then you can circle areas and draw Xs and Os and lines. Plus for me, product demos, to demonstrate how they work, as I use them, that would be cool.

OK, so I stink and drawing. But Phillip, one of the brains behind Sketchcast (Also Patrick Gavin of Text Link Ads), can draw like a mad man. Check this out:

Sweet!

Yom Kippur (יוֹם כִּפּוּר) Tonight - Ask For Forgiveness

kittelTonight is Yom Kippur יוֹם כִּפּוּר, a very serious Jewish holiday. Starting tonight, we fast until about 7:30pm tomorrow (if you are in NY at least, it depends on when it gets dark). Basically, all day tomorrow, we are in synagogue. Pretty much all day... i.e. 8am to 8pm. Maybe we get an hour break at around 2pm.

On a more personal note: This is the first Yom Kippur I am wearing a kittel (קיטל), basically a white robe around my suit. All married men wear it on Yom Kippur during services. The first time I wore it was at my wedding. Then the Yom Kippur after your wedding, it is customary not to wear it, but after that, you are suppose to wear it. So tomorrow is the first time since my wedding, where I will be wearing my kittel.

I would personally like to ask for forgiveness to anyone who I may have hurt in anyway. I am asking for forgiveness or "mechila."

Anyone fasting, have an easy fast and good year!

I Can Lock my Lexus SC430

A stranger asked what was the end result with my broken door lock on my Lexus.

Well, as you know, I went in yesterday and was pleasantly surprised (makes you wonder if they read my blog, highly doubt it). I got there at 3:30, worked until about 5:15 and then they told me it was done. I packed up my computer and stuff, went to see the service rep and he told me it came out to be about $50 cheaper than the estimate. I said thank you, and I went off on my way.

I also noticed they washed the car, so now it looks spanking new. Well, maybe not new.

Lexus SC 430

That picture makes the car look pretty hot, doesn't it?

Anyway, $430 later, I have a new working lock that I will never use. I.e. the electric lock worked fine...

Lexus Service Really Surprised Me

hn_logo.gifI walk into the Lexus service shop and this guy spots me and calls me in. He starts to take down my information and gets a phone call from his boss (as he is talking to me). He said, "excuse me, this is my boss." I nodded that he should take the call. He talks, hangs up and tells me.

The eyes are watching from the sky.

He explained his boss is watching us talk right now and explained my situation. The then said, don't worry, your car is being taken care of right now, just take a seat in the waiting room and when your car is done, we will let you know.

Now that is customer service. Someone IDs me, knows my story, and just tells you to go on your way. I did not waste any time with this service at all, as of yet.

I am actually sitting in the waiting room, typing this now. I hope it all ends well with this service call, but so far, off to a great start.

I Should Be More Tired

Alarm ClocksI should be more tired. I just don't feel all that tired. Is baffles me. Well, maybe not baffle, but surprises me a bit.

This week, time to rise was 5:15am. I did not go to sleep any earlier. In fact, I went to a concert at MSG in NYC two nights ago. Didn't get home until late, didn't get into bed until later. I was not tired at all yesterday. Today, I am also not tired.

I actually woke up even earlier today, without the alarm clock and got a bit of an early start.

I don't get it. I should be more tired. Heck, it is even pitch black in the morning, when I leave the house. Those types of mornings typically make me tired. Not this week.

Yea, running low on things to write about today. Amazing, huh?

Kid Nation is Very Interesting

Last night I saw the premier of Kid Nation, a new show on CBS. It is basically about 40 kids who are put in some old ghost town from the old western days and set off to fend for themselves. No adults, no real assistance, just 8 to 15 year olds making a go at living on their own for 40 days.

This is very intriguing to me. So I decided to DVR it and watch it a bit later. Glad I did. Although some kids I find annoying, it is very interesting to see how they interact with each other. Some really surprised me, while others did not.

Here is the Kid Nation promo:

Now, I checked Google Hot Trends, and yesterday, Kid Nation was number 10 on the hot list. Check out the chart over here. Heck, there is even a Wikipedia entry on how the structure classes work.

Flickr Adds Share Photo Links

The other day, I noticed new icons and links across Flickr. They were these "Share These Photos" and "Share this photo" links. These are not the same as guest passes in Flickr, they do not give people access automatically to private photos (that is important).

Let me walk you through it.

Here are the various places you can find these new "share photos" links:

Your home page to share all your photos:

Your sets pages, to share just specific sets:

Individual photo page, to share just one photo:

Important: If you click a share link on a photo with limited viewing rights, you will be prompted with this message:

To share photos that your friends do not have access to (because they are just too lazy to sign up or remember their user/pass) you can use guest passes in Flickr.

This new feature is just to remind your other friends, who don't use RSS to get notified of my new photos.

After you click on the share photos, you are taken to a page that looks like this:

You basically enter email addresses into the box. As you type, it may prefill the emails in. If not, just click add and it will dynamically place the emails below. Here is an example of that:

Click send and the emails go out to your friends. The emails also look pretty.

Five Star Parking Gets One Star: Refunding Parking Only

Five Star ParkingTo continue my story of My Car Was Broken into at Newark Airport Short Term Parking and lexus wasting my time... I finally got in touch with the parking company today.

I explained the situation. The lady was very nice. As expected, she said, we cannot cover the damage to the car, since it is a "park and lock" garage. Funny, a park and lock garage that costs $150 for a few days of parking...

In any event, she promised me a refund for the $150 charged to me for parking. The least you can do is not charge me for parking my car there, when it wasn't found in the same spot...

Anyway, I am giving Five Star Parking, a single star for customer service. Which is kind of convenient for me, since their logo only shows a single star in their name... I know, it is in the five...

Hope I get the check.

Congrats to Rand (SEOmoz) & Lisa (Bruce Clay)

Wanted to reach out and say a special congrats to two special people and companies in the SEO space.

seomoz(1) Big congrats for SEOmoz getting $1.25 million richer today. In Rand's post, Big Changes Afoot at SEOmoz, Rand shared with us that he secured a VC, but a kind VC, for his company. Will it change the company? Rand says, only for the better. Big congrats Rand! I can say I knew you when you were just a baby SEO. ;-)

Bruce Clay(2) Lisa blogged one-thousand times. Well, not 1,000 times herself, but a 1,000 blog posts have been published at the Bruce Clay blog. In Lisa's post, Bruce Clay, Inc. Blog Marks Its 1,000th Entry she writes about the big landmark.

Congrats Lisa. I always enjoy reading your posts. It honestly lightens up the day for me. Your summaries add humor, wit and a personal touch to the search news. I really appreciate your efforts!

Lexus, Please Stop Wasting My Time!

hn_logo.gifI can't tell you how many times in the past three-years or so, Lexus Service has wasted my time.

I feel that I am very considerate of people's time. I expect others to be the same, especially if I am paying them.

This morning, I called Lexus Service. I explained the situation to them about someone trying to break into my Lexus, and they fully understood what I needed. They said I can come in at 2:30 for a scheduled appointment and it would probably take an hour and thirty-minutes to fix.

So 2:30 comes, I get to the Lexus Service station and check in. BTW, the Lexus service station may be one of the best places to waste your time. I sit and wait in the waiting area for someone to help me. During this time, I turn my laptop on, connect to the free wifi, while drinking an free ice-tee. I am working, the guy calls me in and I go to his desk. He then says I should go back to the waiting area while they look at the car. Ten minutes later, he comes back and tells me they don't have the parts.

I said, so why did I bother coming in? Of course, he couldn't answer, nor did I expect him to answer that question. I was nice, don't worry. I don't blame him. But they need to stop wasting my time.

They do this all the time. It happened when I had to replace my tires, it happened when my windshield cracked and had to be replaced, it happened a few times at least.

I always ask the service rep before coming in. Can it be fixed when I come in, the first time. They say yes. It is just not nice. Get on the same page please. People's time is important. Not just mine, but all your customer's time is important. Please value it. I am sure they pay enough.

Speaking of which, the lock will cost just under $500, just below my insurance deductible, to be fixed. Great. :)

Hopefully it will be fixed Wednesday, but who knows. Good thing I can drive the car with no problems. It just looks like I stole it, if you look at the door handle.

$233 Credited to AMEX Card for iPhone Purchase

American Express LogoI got a letter over the weekend from my new favorite company, American Express.

They politely informed me that they have credited my account $233.00 for the claim I filed over my iPhone. $33 more than I had initially expected, was credited to me based on the "Purchase Protection Plan." In fact, AMEX noted the credit as a "GOODWILL CREDIT:PURCHASE PROT CLAIM" on the statement.

Not only did a get $233 back from AMEX, in pure cash. I also got a $100 credit from Apple for the iPhone purchase.

So the iPhone that cost me $599 now cost $333 less, or $266. that is about $35 less than it costs to buy an iPhone now. Pretty sweet.

Now who is looking smart?

My Car Was Broken into at Newark Airport Short Term Parking

After landing from my my flight yesterday, and knowing that I have been fasting all day, plus had to go to work later.

My wife and I walked to where we parked the car, in short term parking at Newark Airport. We walked up and down the isles, and couldn't find it. I found that weird, since I wrote down the exact location I parked the car.

I finally give up and call the parking security. They sent someone to pick us up and find the car. After driving around the parking lot for ten minutes, she said the car may have been moved. It was moved to the security side of the garage. Someone tried to break in.

When I got to the car, the windows were down and the locked was disabled from the driver's side. It looks like this:

Lexus Door Lock Broken

I am now at the Lexus shop, waiting for them to fix it.

It appears to me that the only damage to the car was the lock being pushed in. I have no idea how much it will cost, but I do know my deductible is $500. :)

The car itself was in perfect condition. Nothing was taken, nothing was damaged, just the lock. In fact, the car still locked using the electronic key lock.

I filed a police report and signed a couple papers at the scene of the crime.

What irks me the most is that I was still charged $150 for parking. They take no responsibility for any damage or inconvenience. They just charge you $150 and send you off, on your way. I probably will complain to the parking company after I get my bill from Lexus.

It obviously could have been a lot worse. I could have not had a car to drive home in. Next time, I know not to park my car at the airport. It is just amazing. They move cars from one spot to the next, if they are broken into.

In any event, we drove home. I went to work, worked for about an hour. I then came home and broke my fast. The day didnt turn out too bad. And, like I said, it could have been worse. But I do feel I was violated or at least my car was violated. I was going to title this post, "My Lexus was Violated & Abused."

Flying, Fasting צום גדליה, Working Later

At the airport again. Will be home later tonight.

Today is also a fast day, it is called Tzom Gedaliah (Fast of Gedaliah or צום גדליה).

Typically you get a bit dehydrated on the plane, but it is a bit worse on a fast day, when you can't drink or eat. The fast is over about 7:45 tonight, I am looking forward to possibly eating some fresh ziti.

But that comes later.

First we board, then we fly, then we land. After we land, I drive home (parked in short term parking for the past few days). When I get home, I need to remember to switch the phone line from my previous provider to the vonage line, it finally switched over.

Then off to work. I have so much to do it is nuts. Seriously nuts. Let's see:

- Payroll
- Payroll taxes
- Estimated taxes
- Insurance stuff
- Bills
- Go through all the office mail
- Mark payments
- Print checks
- Mail checks and other items
- Other misc items

All of this, hopefully in less than an hour. Then I come home with time to spare to pray a bit and then hopefully eat no later than 7:56pm.

That is what I got ahead of me today.

Then tomorrow, I need to get out of the house by 5:14am. Actually, I have to get out of the house at 5:14am Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Friday is later, about 5:44am. Then the following week, we are back to 5:59am.

Hope to get back to a normal schedule tomorrow.

Good day all and go Jets!

Rosh Hashanah (ראש השנה) is Tomorrow Night

shofarWhere has the time gone? (Yea, that sounds old)

It is a new year already! Rosh Hashanah is tomorrow night. I am going to the in-laws for the holidays. There will be no blogging from me starting tomorrow night until probably Monday. If you can, don't email me, don't call me, don't mail me anything. :)

Oh, while you are at not doing anything. Please do not announce any new products, don't do any search algorithm or index updates, don't start a huge debate on link building, don't go off and get married, don't twitter, don't blog anything new and exciting - actually, don't get out of bed until I get back.

I hate missing things. But this month, the holidays fall out mostly during the week. So I am not reachable at all for six work days. I am sure Danny is going to love that. ;-)

Ben, Chris, Kim and company will be helping out with the search blog while Tamar and I are out. But we did schedule about 4 posts for both Thursday and Friday, in case things are light those days.

In any event... Those who are part of the tribe.... Happy and healthy new year. May you all have a wonderful, successful, healthy, and happy new year!!!

A Word on 9/11

9/11Before the day ends, I think it is appropriate I say a word or two on 9/11.

Where was I during 9/11?

When 9/11 happened, I was not in NYC, I was home. It was a Tuesday, I was off from school that day. I think I only had classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. That Tuesday, I was off, so I stayed home. I went to Baruch college which was on 23rd and Lexington, not extremely far from ground zero.

I remember hearing about it on the Internet. I then ran to check the TV and saw the second plane fly into the second building. It didn't look real, it was TV. But it was real. I was IMing with my brother-in-law who was on 20th street and the only means of communication was IM. Phones, both landlines and cell, all eventually went dead. But the Internet was still on.

I then noticed that most the channels went out, I was using an antenna for the TV and most antennas in my area were powered by the Twin Towers. Some were powered via the Empire State building, so some channels worked.

That is my word on 9/11, a sad day, sad sad day.

Gary Price complied an excellent resource on 9/11, for additional reading.

And We Are Back - Hacked iPhone Ringtone

That was quick! I just described how to make an official iPhone ringtone and that it killed my hacked one.

Within the hour, TUAW reports that this Mac application now works with iTunes to make these hacked ringtones.

Convert the file to ACC, open the application and drag it on the icon.

Make iPhone Ringtone

My iPhone ringtone, with the iPhone commercial theme song, is back on.

Making an Official Apple iPhone Ringtone

Alright, so the other day I hacked a bit to get an unofficial iPhone ringtone, now that Ringtone is dead, due to an update. I am sure I will be able to get it back later. But I wanted to test out getting a ringtone the official way, for 99 cents.

The initial tricky part is knowing which songs you can put ringtones on. You have to change your iTunes view preferences to show the ringtones column. Then click on the ringtone icon and presto.

Here is a list view of some of my songs, some that have the ringtone icon:

Apple iPhone Ringtones

Click the ringtone icon and then agree to this:

Apple iPhone Ringtones

Then you get the music selection tool, to pick which part of the song you want:

Apple iPhone Ringtones

I picked this part of Neil Young's Down by the River:

Apple iPhone Ringtones

I clicked "buy and then it showed up in my ringtones section in iTunes:

Apple iPhone Ringtones

It also showed up in my iPhone's Rintones tab:

Apple iPhone Ringtones

I then hit the "sync" button and the song was now on my Ringtones list under Settings > Sounds:

Here is another picture showing the song selected:

And here is a video of me calling myself:

Cool...

Now I need to get that other ringtone back on my phone!

High Holiday Seats Going for $1.8 Million

synagogueWednesday night is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

It is a popular time for all Jews to attend synagogue (shuls). Typically, synagogues sell seats for the high holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) to their members. Seats can be free to typically a few hundred dollars. But sometimes much more, as I learned...

Synagogue seats go for $1.8M from the AP reports Temple Emanu-El in South Beach had two seats go on eBay (yea, some shuls get high tech when selling seats) for $1.8 million.

The bidding started at $1.8M and they get those seats for the high holidays, plus Seats 1 and 2 of Row 1, Section DD will be engraved their their family names. They also get free parking (um, ok), two custom-made prayer shawls (tallism) and yarmulkes, and "a hefty tax write-off." I think they are life-time seats also.

Yes, this is a conservative congregation, it was founded back in 1940. It has 1,400-seat with 200 families.

Here is their web site, I believe, http://tesobe.org/.

AT&T Comes Through on Customer Service for Me

cing_logo.gifI got my second AT&T Wireless bill this weekend. I opened it and noticed I was billed for going $35 over on my minutes.

That made me a bid sad, so I started crying. No, I didn't cry. I put the bill on the side, and figured I would call today.

The week before, I called AT&T in a panic. I noticed I was about 70 minutes over, so I called AT&T. The person said, no worries, you have roll over minutes from the previous month that will cover it. Whippeee.

Then I get this bill for the overage.

I heard bad bad bad things about AT&T customer service and expected I would be charged no matter what I said.

I called, I said, I went over, why? I was told I had roll over minutes. The rep said, well, since the roll over minutes were from your first bill, they don't roll over. But in this case, she said, I will issue you a credit. I was pleasantly surprised.

The credit was issues and displayed on the web site within minutes of hanging up.

Sweet!

Reminder: Don't Take iPhone to Israel

iphone israelI plan on going to Israel early February for my nephew's bar mitzvah. But I do not plan on taking my iPhone with me to Israel.

Hewlett Harbor man racks up $4,800 iPhone bill from Newsday reports Jay Levy took his iPhones to Israel, but did not turn them on, and still managed to receive a bill from AT&T for $4,800.

Jay Levy and his family took their iPhones on a Mediterranean cruise. Now the Hewlett Harbor entrepreneur feels as if he got taken for a ride, receiving a 54-page monthly bill of nearly $4,800 from AT&T Wireless.

Supposedly, if you turn off the phone, it doesn't mean the phone is really off. The iPhone continues to check back at home base to see if you have email messages, even while off.

I do suspect this is not the case if Airplane mode is turned on, but I do not want to be the test bed for that theory.

AT&T charges $24.99 for 20 megabytes in that region. Apple's statement:

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said the company adequately discloses the potential charges on the Web site and when the phone is activated.

Note to self, do not bring iPhone out of country.

Free Custom Apple iPhone Ringtones

Apple iPhone RingtonesSpotted via Mac Rumors, you can convert your iTunes files for free into ringtones for your iPhone.

How? Really simple and I did it.

Convert your ACC iTunes file to a M4R file (just duplicate the source music file, change the extension to .m4r) and then readd that file to iTunes.

I personally opened a file in Apple QuickTime, then clicked export to to ipod and renamed it there. Then I double clicked on the file and presto, I was able to add it to my Ringtones.

I just did this for the iPhone commercial theme song. I will have no patience to make other songs into ringtones.

But nice to know this is a way to do it.

Paid Search Guys: Learn How to Make a Nice Title Tag Please

Here is a simple SEO Tip for some of you paid search guys. Please make a clean title tag for your blog posts, please! I beg you.

Ok, I'll call two paid search guys out and one person who travels so much that he needs to sit down and modify his blog software before he gets on his next boat.

Let's start with someone I know can take it. Andrew Goodman, your Traffick site needs some nice titles. Let's look at your latest post on My Lack of Privacy is Now Official. Forget about Andrew crying about people knowing who he is, since everyone knows how to track him down already... Look at this title tag:

<title>Traffick: My Lack of Privacy is Now Official: Search Engine Enlightenment | Grab the feed: traffick.com/atom.xml</title>

Now, why can't you just put your title of your post in your title? It can look something like this:

<title>My Lack of Privacy is Now Official</title>

Ok, so you may want your blog name in the title, so stick it at the end, like this:

<title>My Lack of Privacy is Now Official, Traffick</title>

This is what your title tag looks in the title of my browser:
Annoying Title Tags

If it was my decision, go with <title>My Lack of Privacy is Now Official</title> format please.

Ok, now that I am done with Andrew, let's move on to my PPC Hero.

A recent post is named Why You May Not Be Able to Use Google Adwords Campaign Optimizer but hey, your title tag reads a hell of a lot more than that.

<title>The Adventures of PPC Hero - Heroic Feats of Pay Per Click Management : Why You May Not Be Able to Use Google Adwords Campaign Optimizer</title>

Cut it down, and make it look like this please:

<title>Why You May Not Be Able to Use Google Adwords Campaign Optimizer</title>

Why? Well not only does it look like this in my browser bar:

Annoying Title Tag

It looks like this in the search results listings:

Annoying Title Tag

Tisk, tisk, tisk - that should be a unique title tag. Otherwise, your site: command search looks extremely repetitive and your CTR from the search results will be lower than you may want.

Ok, next victim is an old time buddy, Mr. Mike Grehan. Yes, I know, you are never at your desk to modify your blog template. But please, please, sit down, get into the code and give yourself a title tag. We know it is your blog and you don't need to tell us that "Mike Grehan says..." in every single title of your post.

I am not sure what the title of his most recent post is suppose to be. site:www.mikegrehan.com...

Mike, favor, please give me some titles to link to, please.

My rant is now done.

Message in a Mailbox: Mailed Myself a Letter

MailRemember how I recently had my mailbox installed?

So I decided to make sure the mailbox worked.

I mailed myself a letter from my office to the new mailbox. Yesterday, I drove by to check on things and my letter was waiting for me, in the mailbox.

So I guess it worked.

My wife finds it weird that I made out the letter to myself. She felt it was like an inside joke, but an inside joke that I only got. I.e. a joke that only I personally would laugh about.

I said that is the point. It is even funnier that it is an inside but inside joke!

I guess I have a weird sense of humor, but it made me smirk and plus it showed me that the mailbox does work. ;-)

pause -- pause --

Not laughing? Of course not! It was an inside joke!

Apple Comes Through: $100 Credit + $200 AMEX = $300 iPhone

Steve Jobs came through also, offering a $100 credit to iPhone buyers. Sweet!

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

So, now with the $200 from AMEX and the $100 from Apple, I got myself an 8GB iPhone for only $300!

Beat that!

AMEX Comes Through: $200 Back for iPhone Purchase!

I can't believe it. AMEX, American Express, just gave me $200 back for my iPhone purchase.

Tuaw updated us saying that AMEX is now giving iPhone customers, who used their AMEX card, the $200 back.

I just got it back!

I called the American Express Return Protection line at 1-800-297-8019 and the nice customer rep said:

Do you want a credit or a check in the mail?

I said a credit is fine!

I should get the credit in about 14 days!

AMEX, you finally came through for me!

Digg users, I turned off comments - the comments were killing the server. So go back to Digg and comment there. Thanks.

Mixing Up Blogs & Blog Posts

Blog LogosYou guys know I blog a heck of a lot... That is one of the reasons I launched RustyBudget, to help me keep things organized. I personally live on that software. In any event, when I actually go and blog an item, can I mix things up?

Like just before, I wrote at this blog, my personal blog, B-52 Bomber Accidently Carries Nuclear Warheads. I actually started writing that post in the backend of Search Engine Land. Imagine if I hit, "publish" on that post and it went live on a search blog...

I guess I can always try to spin it back to be somewhat search related. Like, I did a search for B-52 Bomber and I found that video using Google Universal results. OK, maybe not.

So far, I have never actually published a blog post on a blog I did not intend to publish it at. But I have started writing the blog post in the wrong blog software.

Why? Well, I use exactly the same software at the Search Engine Roundtable that I use at Cartoon Barry and that I use at Search Engine Land. It is all Movable Type blogging software, all with the same backend. So it can look a bit the same and be confusing.

Any bets on how long I can go without mixing up a blog post? It has been years so far and not one slip up yet!

B-52 Bomber Accidently Carries Nuclear Warheads

First, watch this video of a B-52 flight test uploaded to YouTube about one year ago.

Yea, see that huge plane take a nose dive and crash?

That is the same model of a plane that accidently took nuclear warheads over North Dakota to Louisiana.

Air Force investigates mistaken transport of nuclear warheads from CNN reports that a B-52 bomber carried six nuclear warheads between Minot Air Force Base to Barksdale Air Force Base last Thursday. It was a total accident. It was not in accordance with Air Force rules.

Shepperd said the United States had agreed in a Cold War-era treaty not to fly nuclear weapons. "It appears that what happened was this treaty agreement was violated," he said.

Supposedly, the crew on that flight had no idea that this plane was carrying the warheads.

"Secretary [of Defense Robert] Gates was quickly informed of this incident ... and he has been receiving daily briefings from Gen. Buzz Moseley, the Air Force chief of staff, on actions that the Air Force is taking and the progress of their investigation," Morrell told reporters Wednesday.

"I can also tell you that it's important enough that President Bush was notified of it."

Ok, now back to the video at the top.

Feel safe? ;-)

Am I an Apple iPhone Sucker?

If you were stuck in a hole yesterday and missed the news that Apple dropped the price of the iPhone by $200 bucks only after 60 days of it being released then stop reading. Ok, you can continue to read.

As you can see by my first two lines, I am a bit disturbed with Apple. But I guess I have myself to blame. I bought an Apple iPhone about 1.5 weeks after it was released. I paid about $600 for the 8GB iPhone. 55 days later, the iPhone's price dropped by $200. The same exact phone. So I lost about $200.

Of course, owning the iPhone early, as an early adopter, gave been bragging rights. It also gave me a lot to write about at this blog. But I am out $200.

Tuaw offered possible ways to get your $200 back. I personally tried the AMEX price match reward, but AMEX wouldn't let me use yet another rewards, because they discontinued that program. I feel used once again by AMEX.

Apple, well, it was expected but not so soon. This morning I wrote at Search Engine Land, Google Fight: Nokia & Apple Ads Trade Blows Over iPhone Price Cut. Yes, Apple and Nokia go at it using Google AdWords Search Ads:

Nokie & Apple on Google over iPhone

Very funny, oh make sure to check the comments on the SEL post. Some good ones. ;-)

So I am an Apple sucker, so?

Update: See AMEX Comes Through: $200 Back for iPhone Purchase!

iPhone Alarm Helps Make For Happy Marriage

iPhone Alarm ClockSome times, my wife asks me to give her a wake up call.

Back when I had my Treo, that required me to make a new event or use a 3rd party alarm application. This resulted in me often forgetting to call my wife to wake her up at the time she specified. She learned to not trust my wake up calls.

But now, that I have the iPhone, I am now a trustworthy wake up call specialist. She gives me a time, I plug it in, it buzzes and me, I call and we are all very happy.

The iPhone, a device that makes for happy marriages.

It is pretty cool how it works. You go to the clock application, then click on the alarm icon at the bottom. Then you add a new alarm and you can schedule it to repeat on specific days, customize the alert tones, add if you want a snooze option and then scroll the little time pad up and down to the time you want the alarm to go off.

It is pretty neat.

Live Longer By Going To Synagogue Often

SynagogueEvidence suggests that people who attend synagogue live longer from Haaretz reports on a recent study released by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The study showed that "the death rate was 75 percent higher among the group that did not attend synagogue than it was among the group that attended synagogue regularly."

In 1997 the Bureau of Statistics conducted a survey of 5,000 Israeli men and women aged 60. They were interviewed about their way of life. In 2004, 38 percent had passed away.

Those with depression had a 80 percent higher rate of death. But it also showed that those who did not go to synagogue regularly had a 75 percent higher rate of death.

Of course, attending synagogue regularly provides an individual with more social stimulates.

Litwin said that there is no clear-cut explanation for the synagogue attendance effect, but outlined two main possibilities.

"One explanation is spiritual, that is, the individual faith factor," he said. "A series of studies that have been conducted in recent years, especially in the United States, argue that faith helps people deal with psychological pressure. People who believe and pray apparently survive longer," said Litwin.

"Another explanation is the connection between attending synagogue and belonging to a supportive community," he added.

So there you go. You pray and the heavens let you live longer. It is now science.

iRing: I Ring I Not Only Would Wear, But I Want!!!

This guy is a genius!

A bluetooth ring that allows you to control your iPhone!

iRing

Now, I know I told you I would wear a binary ring or a reminder ring, but I didn't have a strong desire to wear those.

This one, well, it is Apple!

Need I say more?

I found this via My iTablet.

I Broke a Nail!

Broke NailFriday I was doing some domestic work in the late afternoon and I broke a nail.

I was actually helping put on sheets on a bed. When I reached down on the inner part of the head of the bed, my nail got caught somewhere. As I pulled my hand up, the nail got caught and teared a bit.

Now I know why girls get upset when they break a nail. It is an annoying inconvenience. So I kept a band aid on it for parts of the weekend and did my best to trim it last night.

It is healing great, so don't worry, I can still type away. ;-)

How To Install a Curbside Mailbox

This weekend I tried to install a curbside mailbox at (hopefully) my soon to be new house.

I purchased a cheap mailbox and post set at Walmart ($36 total) and began work. I first began hammering in a wood post into the ground. It is important to place an additional piece of wood above the wood post you are hammering in, while hammering. So I got that wood piece about 8 inches into the ground, it was solid. I then placed the black plastic post around the wood post. It was at that point where I think I put the wood post in the ground at the wrong angle.

As I was re-reading the directions, that come in a different language, my new neighbor drove by. He said, hey! You are allowed to put the mailbox over there? I said, I don't know. Why? He replied that there are laws at to where you must place your mailbox. At that point I gave up. I decided to take the post out and put it back in the box. I asked the contractor who is making modifications to the house to install it. He did, and I assume he put it in the right location.

So my advice on how to install a mailbox? Get a professional. :)

Well, honestly, it was easy, if you know what to do. eHow has a nice step by step on How to Install a Curbside Mailbox, if you want to be brave and do it yourself.

Giving Bloglines Beta a Chance Against Google Reader

Bloglines BetaOn April 5th, I officially switched from Bloglines to Google Reader. But recently the new Bloglines Beta was released, so I thought I give it a new shot.

I always liked the Bloglines Mobile version over Google Reader Mobile. But the iPhone Bloglines is even sweeter.

Now with Bloglines Beta, I get a lot of the nice functionality that makes feed reading fast, as I would have with Google Reader. So I will pin the two against each other for not just the first time and not just a second time, but this will be my third time.

It is a good thing it is quick to switch back and forth. :)

I hope to make a decision in a week or so.
