The new drawing is out of context so I am judging with limited info. It seems unmemorable and reminds me of the stock generic people images included with Corel Draw 3 back in '93/'94.
With the Rusty Brick logo, backpack and yarmulke, your current avatar seems distinctive, friendly and memorable. Its only drawback is the emphasis on youth and coolness over of than ability and acumen.
I say return to the drawing table and merge the two.

Always a big fan of the original cartoon Barry! It sounds silly, but when we shared a cab at SMX Advanced I knew instantly who you were because of it.

Oh, duh. The new drawing is from SEOmoz's Search Spam cards. See? Context means everything.

Rhea, honestly, you got something there.
My 2 year old niece was on my brother's lap while he was chatting with me on AIM. She saw my 3cm buddy icon, which is the cartoon of me, and she said, "Danny that is Barry." Pretty funny.

I'm a definite fan of the original cartoon, though I understand some of the issues that Thomas raised.
Still, I would choose the original over the new one any day.

I like the original. No good reason.

Stick with the original. It's distinctive and great branding.
