Finally Paid Off My Electric Bill Overage (48 Month Overage)

Electric MeterAbout a year ago, I wrote about being Slapped With Electric Bill For Past Four Years.

Well, this past month was the month I paid it all off, after paying it out over the past 12 months.

In short, the office building never sent me a bill for electric - ever. I had no idea it was part of my lease, so I had no idea I had to pay it. One day, I received a letter that I owed the office building 48 months of back charges on my electric bill. My high estimates was that I owed over $20,000. It turned out, the deal we worked out, was just about $10,000 was owed, to be paid over 12 months.

This month marks the month of when I was all paid up. The whole story was very weird and shocking, but things typically work out.

The bright side of this story, is that now I feel like I have a few extra bucks in the bank every month now, going forward. :)

Annoying Plastic Packaging

As you know, I was thinking about getting a new hard drive to house my raw search recap videos. So I swung by Best Buy and bought a Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive in the Intense Blue color. Why? cause it was on sale and I had a $150 Best Buy gift card.

What I hate is the box it comes in. The thing is wrapped in this hard clear plastic. You need a mini chain saw to cut it open and get the hard drive out. I have a sharp razor blade, which did the trick. But I had to be careful not to cut myself on the razor and even on this hard plastic. Here is a picture:

Hard Drive Packing - Err

So, tell me, why do they come packaged like this? Just to annoy customers or for protection and style?

Turning The Lights Out While Taking Care of Business

toiletThis afternoon, the bathrooms on my floor were closed for construction. Just a few minutes ago, I decided to stop by and take care of business.

When I opened the bathroom door, I noticed the lights automatically turned on. In addition, I also noticed the bathroom light switched was removed. It seems like they installed a light sensor, that turns off the light after X minutes of motionless observation and then turns the light back on when the sensor detects motion.

I looked around for the location of the motion detector, but I wasn't able to quickly find it.

Then I thought... How funny would it be if someone was taking care of business and the bathroom went dark on him or her. Yea, these things make me laugh - pretty sad. I have heard of situations where the lights go out while people are at their desk 'working,' due to inactivity. But while you are taking care of business? I guess anything is possible.

Honestly, if circumstances allowed - I would likely install these things in my house.

Lawn Management Time

grassSpring came and now the grass is growing... Since I moved, and owned a lawn, I had to cut my grass maybe twice. But now that the warm weather is approaching quickly, I will hopefully have a full season of grass cutting ahead of me.

Thing is, my lawn is still trying to grow grass. The house we moved into was fairly new construction and the lawn was mostly mud. We do have grass, it is just not plush green grass - not yet. I hired a landscaper, not sure what his plan is, but I don't plan on having green grass for a while. I just want the grass and lawn kept clean, so I don't get on my neighbors bad side. :)

Thinking About Getting Another Hard Drive

I have many hard drives for my personal computer. I have a hard drive to mirror my main hard drive. I have a hard drive for doing Time Machine backups. I have an old mirror hard drive that I don't use anymore. Of course, I have my main hard drive in my laptop. And, my office, I have several network storage hard drives.

But I think I need another one. I have been doing lots of videos and videos take up a lot of space. Recording, processing, editing, producing and sharing video really takes up a lot of space. I have been doing this all on my main hard drive, which only have about 2GB of space left. So I need to either delete stuff quick or get a hard drive to use for my videos.

I do have a best buy gift card that I have in my wallet that will cover an additional hard drive. The only thing is, I don't have any more USB ports to run Time Machine, the USB Mic, the keyboard, and my other USB devices along with an additional hard drive. I guess, when it comes down to it, I will make it work, some how.

I'm A Top Tech Blogger

koolaidSurprised? TechCrunch compiled a list the other week of the top tech bloggers based on a historical analysis of Techmeme.

The thing is, it doesn't look like they took into account all the blogs I write at, and only processed data based on one blog.

Heck, I'll take position 54, even though the "list doesn’t take into consideration authors who write for multiple publications."

There is no surprise that TechCrunch completely rules the list. They can't write about cats drinking koolaid and it would make it hot to Techmeme. Alright, so maybe cats drinking koolaid is kool...

Greg Sterling and Danny Sullivan also made the list from Search Engine Land. Other search related bloggers on the list include Ionut Alex Chitu and Philipp Lenssen.

I Got It Easy?

ChoresDare I admit it? In the house chore department, I got it easy.

Why admit it now? Well, this weekend, was the last two-days of Passover. We had my in-laws and family over for the full two-days. My wife also invited over my parents, my sister and kids and my brother and kids for a Sunday lunch meal (they are all in walking distance - well, not parents, but they were at my sister).

Preparing a house to house, room, clean, feed, etc nine people is a chore. I barely did anything myself to help. I did my part by staying out of the kitchen and staying out of my wife's way. I believe she had help from her family, but I am not sure how much help. In any event, I, for the most part, stayed out of the way.

I did have a few things to take care of, such as the lighting (which I messed up on), timers for certain appliances (which worked for the most part) and fixing some things prior to the holiday. But I had no say on food, rooms, bedding, cleaning, etc. All I did was go to work and stay out of the way. In fact, I rarely ever do the wash, clean the floors, make any food or anything - things magically get done some how.

My wife doesn't like when I talk about her here, but I do need to say that she did a wonderful job this holiday!

Getting There... After Flu Weakness

So I have been sick since Saturday night/Sunday morning. I typically get sick on holidays or weekends, not sure why - but normally when I get really sick, it happens on days I am off anyway. Sometimes, these sicknesses linger into work days - I hate when that happens.

Monday, I was off for Passover. Tuesday, I was hoping to come back, but I was too sick. My wife made me go to the doctor - who happens to be in the same building as my office, so before and after the doctor visit, I spent some time in the office (with fever). In fact, I actually interviewed a new PHP candidate for a job, in person.

Today, I think my fever is beginning to break. I got into the office after 10am. I am absolutely exhausted already. What is with these flus that they not only kick you when your sick, but linger on and on with being weak days after?

I hope I get back to 100% (if I was ever a 100%) soon. Not being able to be quick quick quick, is really bothersome.

It's Going To Get Real Quiet Soon: Passover Break

ListenListen up, it is going to get very quiet here until Tuesday.

Saturday night is the first day of Passover, so that means I will be offline, unreachable, until Monday night.

So no need to stop by here until Tuesday. I hope to have a bunch of stories then, but nothing until then.

What are you going to read? Don't panic! I got ya covered...

(1) We have scheduled five blog posts at the Search Engine Roundtable for Monday, many of them are pretty good.
(2) You can spend the time catching up on my 11 videos, each about 10 minutes long.
(3) Greg will be running the show with Danny at Search Engine Land (note, I will not be checking feeds until Monday night, so I hope the news coverage goes well).
(4) You can read some of the billion blogs I have listed in my link farm, which I seriously need to update...
(5) If you are Jewish, why not celebrate Passover?
(6) If you are not Jewish, prep yourself for Earth Day, we got a theme that should rock that day.

Alright, that should be it. If I may be so bold to request you to avoid calling or emailing me when I am gone. I expect thousands of emails to flow in when I get back online Monday, and I am so not looking forward to digging out from them.

Happy Passover!

My Morning Writing Process: Why It May Matter

WriterSomeone, unnamed, asked me where I get my blogging ideas from. The person asked if it was from that Daily SearchCast. Honestly, I was a bit taken back from that.

Why? Well, all the topics discussed on the Daily SearchCast typically come from my research. I spend a good chunk of my time, compiling news, blog posts, images and forum threads on topics related to search. I then organize them in RustyBudget and we work of that for the news we post at Search Engine Land, the SearchCap and what goes into the Daily SearchCast.

That being said, I also want to keep the Search Engine Roundtable unique and have its own perspective. So how do I not let what I find via my research for Search Engine Land, interfere with my work and research for the Search Engine Roundtable. Although my system is not 100% foolproof, it tends to have worked very well for years.

Before doing my morning rush of reading my RSS subscriptions, as you can see, it spikes at about 8am. I always head to the forums first. Why do I go to the forums first? Well, I honestly don't want the "news" and "blogosphere" to interrupt my objectivity of what is important to the inner core of our industry. How do I determine what news or features or subjects are the most important to the industry? Like I said time and time again, and have written in the Search Engine Roundtable's purpose statement, I let the industry decide. By that I mean, I mine the search forums - look for the most discussed topics and then write about those topics based on the discussion. I do the forum research before the other research, so that I can avoid writing about something that honestly is not that important to the average SEM.

Let me show you a recent example... [heads off to find an example...] On April 11th, I covered news at Search Engine Land that Yahoo's new minimum bid formula will go live sometime this week. SEMs didn't really care for the news in the forum and there was no thread at that time. Today, at the Search Engine Roundtable, I finally wrote a story about it, five days later. Why today, because today is the first day SEMs and advertisers actually noticed a change in how Yahoo is actually determining the minimum bid. Yes, we warned advertisers that this was coming a few times months ago, only because the SEMs in the forums cared and had threads on it. But I did not cover last week's announcement, because advertisers were kind of sick of the warnings - they want to see if the quality changes they implemented will hurt them or not and today is that day for some.

Hope that clarifies a few things for my readers on how I differentiate between the Roundtable and the Land.

Forbes Quote Makes Me Look Brainy

SmartAndy Greenberg interviewed me for his latest Forbes piece, Microsoft Plays Both Sides Of The Ad Game. Besides for the article laying out the issues with Microsoft owning AvenueA/Razorfish, it also makes me look brainy - I think...

Here is one of the quotes:

It would show that Microsoft is really interested in competing with Google. And it would show that they understand that the perception of an unbiased algorithm is just as important as having an unbiased algorithm.

Yea, the line, "the perception of an unbiased algorithm is just as important as having an unbiased algorithm."

It is. Really. There were studies done (can't find them now) that show if you slap on a Google logo to a Yahoo search results page and then slap on a Yahoo logo to a Google search results page, people would find the results from Google to be more relevant, simply because of the brand. Ah, found it, when I was at SEW, I wrote Is Google Search More Relevant Or Is There A Brand Factor?

Anyway, the line is cool to read. Didn't even realize I said it, until he quoted me.

Gmail Feature Request: Auto-Delete Spam If Spam Score Greater Than

Gmail Spam Feature RequestOne feature I would love to see from Gmail is a way to specify that you want certain spam to be auto-deleted.

As many of you know, an email is marked as spam automatically if the spam score meets a certain number. Now, the score is made up of many factors, such as words in the email, message source, location, and so on. Some emails marked as spam are less spammy than others.

What would be nice is if Google somehow showed us the spam score of each message and then allowed the user to define which spam messages should be auto-deleted.

For example, if after several days of reviewing spam email, I notice that any email with a spam score greater than 5, is always spam. Then, I would love to tell Google, delete any spam emails from my spam folder with a score of 5 or higher. The rest I will review at a later date.

There is a way to delete all spam right away but that is a bit risky.

Also, I see why Google might not want to show a spam score. If they do, spammers can learn from the score and create spam emails that break through. However, virtually all spam filters do show a score of some kind.

Where Is My Fiber Already? Renewed My Costly T1

FiberI thought Verizon FiOS would be here by now, in fact, I was convinced Verizon was laying Fiber at my office. But almost a year later, I am still without FiOS as an option for my office.

I really thought I would have FiOS as an option now but I still do not and Verizon's local business office has no ETA on it for my office. My T1 contract expired about a year ago, I didn't renew and stuck paying $65 more per month, so I could drop them without penalty where FiOS comes. But I was wrong, FiOS did not come and I pay almost $800 extra over the course of the year because of it.

Today, I decided to renew my T1 contract, so I can save about $65 per month. So I am now renewed for a new year. It costs $600 to terminate within the year, so if FiOS comes in a couple months, which I doubt it will), I will keep the T1, the Cable and add FiOS. I would likely unplug T1 and replace it with FiOS and let the T1 expire.

FiOS is just so much faster then cable, I have it at home and besides for one outage, it has been super fast and rock solid. Plus, I am sure it will be much cheaper than T1, which is, in turn, slower than Cable.

If renewing the contract would guarantee FiOS availability in my area, I would have done it. So maybe, it will be here soon. I am itching to get it in my office.

Any chance I get, I'll mock Microsoft, in any way I can. Ronnie, my brother, spotted and blogged about a funny typo on Microsoft's remote desktop for Mac product.

So, it comes out as Lastest. Screen shot:

Flooded My Kitchen: Kinda

FloodSo part of my passover preparations, I had to pour hot boiling water all over my counter tops.

It was a learning experience, to say the least. Since this is the first time we are preparing for Passover, we don't really have a system to get things done. But over the years, we will learn.

So after the first pot boiled, I started by pouring the water in a cup with a ladle. I then pored the cup of hot boiling water in the counter tops. It took too long, so I grabbed some new oven mitts and grabbed the big pot of scorching water and poured it on a part of the counter tops. It got everywhere!

So we dried it a bit and then decided to cover the wood cabinets that seemed to be getting soaked, with garbage bags. Then we began the process again. We put up more pots of hot water and I watered our countertops. The floor was covered with water, but the garbage bag idea was pretty good (not 100 % foolproof, but pretty good).

So then we dried from top down, until the floor was dry.

Live and learn.

Could be worse, I could have to tinfoil my whole house (which is a joke).

Taxes In The Mail

TaxesYesterday, my accountant gave me my final tax papers. I didn't even review them, I just stuck a check in the envelopes, signed them and mailed them.

I will review them later, cause I know there are a few amendments I need to have done anyway.

I don't mind the April 15th deadline too much. Why? Cause I pay someone to do them. But also cause I dislike the estimated taxes more. Not only do you have to pay your taxes by April 15th for the prior year (if you owe), but you also have to pay your estimated taxes (if you own a company or self-employed).

But paying the money doesn't bother me that much. My accountant told me, the more taxes you pay, the more money you are making. Now, it doesn't mean you should not take advantage of every tax law that you are entitled to. So, there are a few things I need to go back on and see if I qualify for.

We did file an extension for the business returns, but we did pay the taxes anyway. Government doesn't like it when you pay those things late.

Video Blogging From Car: I'm Bored?

Okay, I feel like I am wasting time. At least I got my laptop. But there is only so much you can do in a car. Anyway... I did a small video in iMovie while in the car. But I really would love to work on the video recap for the week now, but I just don't want to freak out my driver... Here is my quick video:

Hollywood, here I come!

Blogging in Car on Way Back from Jim

That was quick! I arrived at 10:30ish, presented at 11ish, finished at 12ish and left at 12:15ish. Now, in the car, I caught up on feeds. Wrote a YSM story at SEL and reviewed Tamar's posts at SER.

Replied to some more emails, reviews SER's tax day theme (it rocks) and IMing with a few people. So I decided to then take some pictures of myself blogging in the car...

Black & White:

Color:

Regarding Jim's thing... I can't speak much about it. I honestly came in, did my presentation and left. I have no idea if my presentation was good or not. The questions were good. My slides rocked cause of Apple Keynote. The content, well, I have no idea. :)

Blogging In Transport To Jim's Link Ninja Seminar

I am sitting in the back of this car, typing away on my computer, writing this blog post, as I am being driven from Suffern, NY - two hours to Troy, NY to speak at Link Ninja's thing for Jim.

My battery has a little over two hours left, so by the time I get there, I should be all dead. I do have a spare, fully charged for the two hour trip back. I also plan on presenting on this machine, using Keynote. So it will be charging during my one hour presentation.

I need to talk for one hour? No idea if my presentation is even that long. I have almost a 100 slides on Universal Search and how to take advantage of it. But I talk fast. Anyway, it should be fun. A lot of other SEMs that I am friendly with will be there.

I love being able to work while commuting, this is the only way to travel!

Testing...1...2...3.... Samson C01U USB Microphone

I just got my USB Microphone, the Samson C01U mic. I plugged it in to my Mac, and presto, it showed up in the list of input devices under my audio settings. I decided to scan the owner's manual and it had three full pages on how to set up this Microphone with a Windows PC. Mac? Just plug it in and it works. Too funny.

Anyway, here is me testing out the mic:

Breaking News: Two Year Old Falls Asleep In My Office

Baby Sleeping in My OfficeMy brother's kid had to come to the office today for an hour or so. During that time, she ended up playing with something in my office.

She then got up, walked into the corner of the room and laid down.

Seconds later, she was out cold. Sleeping away. So my brother first tried offering her a pillow but that didn't work out too well. He then grabbed my camera and snapped some pictures.

Now, how often do I have kids falling asleep in my office? This is the first time. I am sure, some of you have home offices, and this may not be uncommon for you - but very uncommon here.

Anyway, she then woke up 15 minutes later and looked around. She seemed a bit frightened, and I told her that her dad was in the office next door. She walked over there and then seconds later, I hear a big cry. I scoot over to his door and close it.

Why did I close the door. People were on the phone with clients, and it might sound weird hearing a kid crying in the background.

(3) There is a three second delay...
(4) "Hello, my name is Joe," is heard in an Indian accent from far away (i.e. VOIP line).

Official Launch of Video Cast & Bought New Microphone

My New VideoCastYesterday, I officially launched a weekly video cast that I will be producing on search news and SEM advice. It basically is a video recap of the text recap we prepare in our Search Buzz section.

I have been experimenting with them for about four months and honestly, I am enjoying doing them. I keep them under 10 minutes, so they fit on YouTube and I get to interact more with my readers with these video recaps. The good news is that I asked search companies and SEM companies to provide schwag for viewers to win by watching the video and already received many responses with yes! So we are going to have some really cool schwag to give away in the near future, if you watch!

How do you watch? A few ways:

  • Subscribe to our standard video feed and be notified of updates. You can then watch the raw video or watch it on YouTube.
  • Subscribe to our feed directly in iTunes
  • Watch for updates at my YouTube channel

I am also very excited to be receiving a new microphone to help with the horrible built in microphone quality of the MacBook Pro. I purchased the Samson C01U Mic, which has great reviews. So that should increase the volume of my voice, which will enable me to add some elements to the videos.

Samson C01U

This mic is coming today and I hope to use it this Sunday in my new video. So make sure to subscribe to our video podcast and you can not only get a quick 10 minute recap of the past week in search but also, you can win prizes and awesome schwag!

Have My RSS Reading Habits Changed?

It has been over a year since I switched to Google Reader and 11 months or so since I posted my RSS reader trends. So I thought I take a look back and see if my RSS reading habits have changed over the course of the year.

The green bars new-gr-legend.png are my new RSS reader stats and the redish bars old-gr-legend.png are old stats.

Note: Overall, I am reading a lot more posts per day, tracking more feeds and subscriptions. The charts overlay nicely because they are normalized. So I am using them to show a pattern - it will make sense as you read:

Time of Day: It seems like I am viewing less feeds closer to midnight then I have about a year ago. I guess I am going to sleep earlier? Ah, I now consume a lot of my RSS on my iPhone, so I have less to read when I get back home late after basketball. That explains it, I think...
Compared: Time Of Day RSS Reader Stats

Day of Week: Looks like, although I am reading more feed items per day, the pattern of the number of feeds on a daily basis is the same. I.e. I read the most amount of feeds on a Tuesday, like I did a year ago. Not sure why...
Compared: Day of Week RSS Reader Stats

Last 30 Days: This chart doesn't really show much, except that I didn't take a day off this month.
Compared: Last 30 Days RSS Reader Stats

Have your RSS reading habits changed over the course of the year? Mine really haven't, in terms of when I read. I do consume more, about 200 more feed items per day more (if I read the charts correctly).

JavaScript Version of Super Mario Brothers

Super Mario in JavaScriptFrom a coding perspective, this is pretty wild. This guy coded Super Mario in JavaScript. Well, it is not the whole game, but it is a lot of it.

The compressed version of the JS code is 14kb.

Here's an experiment in keepings things small and confined to one Javascript file. There are no external image files or anything, everything is rendered with Javascript using either canvas elements or old fashioned div-making tactics (for IE). The sprites are stored in custom encoded strings in a format that only allows 4 colors for each sprite but in turn only takes up around 40-60 bytes per sprite.

We also have MIDI music embedded as base64-encoded data: URI's. No music for IE, though, and it seems all the other browsers each have different, minor problems with it, but it sort of works.

Pretty crazy, play one version over here or check his blog for other sizes and versions.

Should I Proof Read My Blog Posts?

I write a ton of blog posts a day. Typically about 3 or so here, 5 or so at the Search Engine Roundtable and 4 or so at Search Engine Land per day. So about 10 - 20 blog posts per work day.

One of my tricks for getting so many blog posts done per day is not proof reading them. For this site and the Search Engine Roundtable, I don't even bother running grammar check with Microsoft Word on the posts. With most my Search Engine Land posts, I run them through Word - but I don't really proof them by giving them a once over before posting.

I type and click "submit" at the bottom of the blog software. I rarely ever skim or read over my blog posts before submitting and I rarely ever read them once they are posted.

I am sure I mess up on spelling and grammar all the time but I rarely ever get complaints. So, I am not asking, should I spend the time proofing the blog posts or spend my time finding more news and content to write about and less time proofing?

Feel free to comment anonymously - no need to be mean, just be honest. Asking for "constructive criticism," please.

Remote Check Deposit: I Don't Have To Go To The Bank?

Remote Check DepositI was at the bank today, depositing a few checks - like I do a few times per week and I noticed a promotion for "Remote Check Deposit." A way to deposit money from your computer, without having to go into the bank!

I have heard about this mysterious but yet fascinating invention before, but blew it off as a folks tale. ;-)

Seriously, many banks now offer this to companies. I go to the bank a few times a week, in fact, I send my partner to go also, I send my wife, and also, I often send my mother. I am sometimes too busy to go, but the funds need to be deposited to keep the business operating. Today, I went and I saw the promo for Remote Check Deposit.

The teller wrote down the branch manager's name and telephone number, so I can get more information. The second I got back into my office, I called the branch manager. He looked up my account and said I qualify and might be able to get the scanner for free, plus a reduction in the monthly fee.

He then gave me the fees without any reduction and promised to call me back with my rates. Here are the fees without any reduction:

  • $866 for the scanner - one time fee
  • $125 per month for the service
  • $0.09 per check

The 9 cents per check is fine with me but the $125 per month is crazy, at least for my business. Let's do some math...

If I go to the bank 3 times per week, let's say there are 45 weeks I go to the bank (52 weeks per year). 135 bank runs per year. Now, if each bank run costs me more than $12 or so, then it makes sense for me to buy this service, at the retail cost. Let's say, it takes me 15 minutes to do a bank run and I am worth $300 per hour (am I?), then the 15 minutes costs me $75? So I would be saving $63 per run by getting this device.

See why they call this fuzzy math? In reality, I don't think it is worth $125 per month for me to be that lazy. In fact, why are they charging me for this? Think of the amount of money they can save by having businesses process their own deposits and not have them come in and take up the teller's time? One day, this service will likely be free - it just makes sense. How much would I pay for it? I don't even know if I would pay $30 per month for it - just doesn't seem worth it and I do need to see the sunlight on some days.

How much would you pay for this service?

Are Your Neighbors In Foreclosure?

Foreclosure Rate Heat Map - HotPads.comTechCrunch had a piece on new mashup by HotPads.com. It basically shows you the foreclosure rates per capita in any area they have data on.

Of course, being a nosey neighbor, I want to see how bad it is in my area. Yes, it makes a huge difference on the value of your own homes. Plus, I don't want to see a lot of red, cause it may be people I know.

The legend, I posted at the top right of this post shows you the heat maps grades of low to high rates of foreclosure. I can tell you, my home is in the yellow area, with no immediate homes foreclosing, at least, based on this chart. I do see blocks that I know people live on, with homes up for foreclosure - which upsets me. Here is a screen cap of that map:

Charge For Ideas: Is It Time For That?

I have been contemplating the idea of actually charging for ideas, and not just charging for implementing the ideas. Yes, they are two different things.

For as long as I can remember, my company has been creating business models with our clients from day one. It doesn't matter the type of business, the sector or if it is an old business or a new one. Many, not all, but many, of our clients use us as a think tank for ideas on how to improve their business or develop new products or messages or brands or backend processes for their business.

Our practice for billing for those ideas has been... Okay, we came up with an idea - you like it, now we will charge you for implementing that idea on a software level. But we never really charged for producing the idea, itself, as an idea that goes to market. Tons of companies do it, they are called Marketing Companies, Branding Companies, and so on. Some charge hundreds of thousands for coming up with a brand concept, logo and so on. We, we just charge for the actual dirty work, in terms of putting it together but not for helping conceive the brand or idea.

Why am I blogging this now? Well, yesterday, I brought in four of my RBers into a kick off meeting with a new client. We came out of the meeting designing a whole new marketing pitch, concept and a brand new domain with tons of awesome ideas on how to promote the site and business. Maybe, in a few months, when we launch the new brand, Ill let you know what it was - and reference back to this post. But for now, I can't talk about the specifics of the business.

As we came out of the meeting, we thought to ourselves - once again... Hmm, we just helped them put together an awesome branding strategy. Yes, we are going to implement the whole strategy in a technical sense - by coding it up for them. But, in terms of payment for creating the new brand - we get nothing. This happens all the time and I never feel upset or cheated. I feel happy for them and for us - we just built a long term relationship in one sit down meeting with this client. But, on the other hand, maybe we should charge for it.

In the next few months - it might be something we actually stick a price tag on. But, one thing is for sure, our current message on our rustybrick.com site, really doesn't show that we can and do provide ideas as a service. So maybe we will launch our new site with some content focused on that as a service as well - if we ever launch it.

New Apple MacBooks in Q3 2008

New MacBook Pro in Q3 2008AppleInsider reports that the next line of Apple notebooks will have a totally redesigned shell to them.

Apple Inc.'s existing MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks will be the last of their breed, as both product families are destined for major design changes upon their next refresh, AppleInsider has learned.

When exactly is that? It appears to be some time in the third quarter of this year. About the same time I plan on getting a new Apple laptop.

The new laptop design is expected to be more environmentally sound. AppleInsider said sources tell them that the design will be made of "eco-friendly materials such as aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel." What else might we expect on the new Apple notebook designs? AppleInsider adds, "matte black on portions of the casings, oversized trackpads, and the adoption of the MacBook Air's keyboard by the MacBook."

It feels like my MacBook Pro, which I got in August 2006, is seriously slowing down. I previously thought I ordered it in 2005, or three years ago. But it has been less than two-years now. I suspect, when these new Apple notebooks come out, I'll be one of the first to get them. Should I wait? Probably, but with my current laptop slowing down with certain applications - I doubt I will be able to hold out.

On the right hand side is the timeline of Apple notebooks, for the "Pro" editions. I can tell you that I had every single model listed there, from the PowerBook G3, two G4s, my current MacBook Pro and then in August, hopefully a new one.

Europe To Allow Mobile Airplane Use

mobile in airI can't wait for the day where you can use your mobile device on an airplane, with the airplane's door closed.

In fact, I would be totally cool with airlines banning the use of the phones on the plane, as long as we can use our data connections. :)

The amount of time I waste on a plane, stinks. So it is cool to see Europe clears mobiles on aircraft:

Mobile phone calls will be allowed on planes flying in European airspace under new European Commission rules.

The decision means that mobiles could be used once a plane has reached an altitude of 3,000m or more.

The graphic above shows how the transmission would be bounced off a satellite, down to a local cell tower. The 3G network won't work yet, but it may follow soon.

Passover Preparations Seriously Begin

So, Passover is less than two weeks away now, starting on the 19th. This is the first time we (wife and I) are ever hosting Passover (Pesach) meals in our home. So it requires us to do a lot more work then we have ever done before, for this holiday.

Why so much more? Well, Passover has a strict rule to not have any bread in your house or in your possession. There are plenty of other rules and customs, but the bread thing is huge. Passover is like the major spring cleaning for orthodox Jews. We clean our homes with a fine tooth comb, to make sure we don't find even a crumb of bread (including food items made with bread (i.e. pretzels, crackers, many cereals, etc).

Now, if you are not Jewish, it is kind of hard to imagine what goes into cleaning your house of all bread items. Try to imagine what it would take to clean your house of all these items. Can you imagine that? Anyway, that is a brief overview of that aspect of the holiday.

Yesterday, we had to 'tovel' (means, spiritually clean new utensils and vessels such as pots, pans, forks, knives, etc. by dipping them in a Mikvah filled with rain water). Why did we get all new pots and pans? Well, like I said above, we can't have any bread items. So we either burn the bread from within the pans off with hot boiling water or we buy new ones we can use every year. We opted to buy new ones, and reserve them for Passover use every year. so before using new pans, we need to spiritually clean them (which actually makes them physically dirty, so we wash them when we get home). The tevilas keilim process isn't fun, but it's necessary.

So far, we bought tons of food, tons of bake wear, things to eat on, etc. Then we toveled them. Next up is to clean the kitchen so it is "kosher for passover." That will require me pouring boiling water on everything that is not new and locking up cabinets that has bread in them (and then selling off the contents of those cabinets to a non-Jewish person).

This all gets very technical and it is a lot of work. But it is exciting to host our first Passover.

The Broken Pizza Store

On the way back from the bank, I stopped off at the Pizza store to buy lunch. I go to this pizza store very frequently, like several times a day - okay, maybe not several times a day, but a lot...

Today, the store, was simply broken. Here is the run down of how it went:

(1) Order Pizza
(2) Move to cashier to pay
(3) Notice huge line to pay
(4) Notice two people working on the single cash register
(5) Notice them failing at fixing it
(6) Someone asks for ice cream, response was - sorry, it is not working
(7) Someone tries to go in child ride (you know, small little toy ride thing), but it is "Out of Order"
(8) Someone asks for ice, response: "Sorry, the ice machine is broken."

Thankfully, I walked out with the food, and I was able to pay via credit card (the credit card machine was working).

But I seriously wonder if some disgruntled employee decided to break a few machines, including a kid ride, before quitting?

Dream iTunes Feature: Add To iTunes Via Radio

itunesHow often do you hear a song in your car and say, hey - I want that in my iTunes music collection? If you are like me, at least once a week.

But how often do you forget to actually download the song after you get to your computer? If you are like me, 99% of the time.

I wish there was some type of feature to dynamically add a radio song from my car (or even my iPhone, via the iTunes store, to be prompted to download later.

One night I pulled up to the gym to play basketball, heard a song on the radio and instinctively went to the iTunes store on my iPhone to add the song to my iPhone. Of course, without wifi access (Edge isn't enough), it wouldn't let me access the iTunes store. Why not? Why not let me search for songs, click a button to download later when I am on Wifi or on my computer on a fast connection? Why? WHy? WHY?!!!

I Got Free Branding on TechCrunch

I guess I got nothing better to write about, but this is the first time (at least I noticed), that my Twitter account was displayed on TechCrunch. TechCrunch wrote a post on Seesmic Acquires Popular Twitter AIR Client Twhirl, the post has a screen capture of the client and up comes my icon, as the last one there.

Me on TC

I guess it helps me build my personal brand (ahem, Lisa).

In any event, it was then that I got confirmation that Michael at TechCrunch follows me along with almost 300 others.

Don't worry, I got other things to blog about today.

On Time For Business Calls? Do You Prefer Scheduled Calls?

I have become a stickler for being on time for scheduled business calls. I really really get annoyed when I have a scheduled call for a certain time and that person is not around for the call, when we scheduled it.

There are two cases of these calls.

(1) The person is suppose to call you and calls you an hour later or never calls. When this happens, I always want to tell the person - we had a call scheduled for X and I cannot talk now. But often, I stop what I am doing and take the call anyway. But it really makes for a bad impression.

(2) I am suppose to call the person and he/she doesn't answer when I call. When this happens, I always leave a voicemail saying, it is X time and we had a schedule phone call. I hope everything is okay. Please call me back at ###-###-###, thank you. Again, leaves a bad impression and really bothers me.

I am an extremely punctual individual about most things. I am the type to be 15 minutes early to everything. I call people exactly on the dot, when scheduled. I actually often make sure to clean my plate before expecting a phone call or meeting. Otherwise, I might be distracted during the call.

In addition, I am much more in favor of scheduling phone calls as opposed to just calling "whenever." It allows me to devote the necessary attention to whom I am speaking with. Otherwise, I can be involved in 5 different things and one of those five things can get lost in the pile (although that rarely happens, I hope).

Of course, that is my nature and not everyone has this type of mentality. What type of person are you? More laid back or not? Here is a poll:

I Enjoy Web Applications More Than SEO: Today

Yesterday I went to see a prospect about building out a web based application to help automate the company's processes. The company has lots of inefficiencies, from an application stand point, and I get excited about the opportunities available to automate and document the processes. In short, a company may use five different applications, some online and some offline, not tied together, to get their job done. I love when I can tell them, we can make one application that does it all or ties them all together.

I seriously enjoy learning a business's processes and figuring out a way to set up systems to help those processes from a business perspective. That includes helping automate certain tasks, documenting the workflow, streamlining the operation, making it accessible via a web browser, dynamic reporting, user/group access and so much more.

I come out of those meetings, smiling.

When it comes to SEO, at least today - I get a bit bored. Listen, if I was building applications to turn out spam, maybe I wouldn't. If I was building out a search engine or helping build a better search engine, then maybe I wouldn't. But talking about SEO, honestly, doesn't make me as excited as when I talk about building web applications.

A company can come to me and say... "Hey, I have this site, I want to get it more visibility in the search engine." I would actually be upset with a call like that. But if a company comes to me and says... "Hey, I have these operational deficiencies, I need help building a system to tie it all together," I would be excited.

Maybe its a stage I am going through - but right now I am less about driving sales and more about lower costs.

I am just happy we can do both, I just like talking about one over the other. Or maybe it is because I blog all day about one and not the other. Maybe I should start a blog about using the web to become more efficient?

Search Engine Roundtable Ads Delivered by Google

Google Ad ManagerI just switched the ad delivery program from Open Ads to Google Ad Manager a few minutes ago.

I have been testing Google Ad Manager on the forums and it has been working out well. So today, I had an hour, so I moved all the ads on the main blog to Google Ad Manager.

Why did I do this?

(1) So I don't have to host my own ad software.
(2) Less load on my server.
(3) No worries about patching the software.
(4) Slick reports
(5) It does what I need

I loved Open Ads, but numbers one through three are good enough reasons for me to switch. And it is free!

I am glad I wrote my Google Ad Manager Tutorial, because I had to reference back to it several times as I set up the news ads.

If you see any bugs, let me know...

Busy Day: Ate Two Granola Bars

Sorry for lack of posts, been a very busy day. Typically I get a chance to post here, but I honestly didn't have any time yet.

It is 1:15 (EST), been up since about 5:30am and the only thing I have eaten all day were two Granola bars (which I just ate).

Back to work...
