This morning, outside of the elevator up to my office, I found money. It wasn't a huge amount, but it wasn't just a dollar. I don't want to say how much, because I might use that to return the money to it's owner - if possible.
I have a few options:
(1) I can keep it, which I think is legal and also in accordance with Jewish law (in this situation).
(2) I can give it to charity.
(3) I can post a sign in the elevator saying, if you lost money call ###. Then if people call, I can quiz them on information about the money (i.e. how much, where, how many bills, etc.)
My concern with number three is that I would get a ton of calls from different people. Then they might get mad at me if I determine they are not the rightful owners of the money. It just can get hairy and for the amount, it is likely not worth fighting over.
Just not sure what to do here... I never found money before.

I'd try to find the correct owner and everyone that calls and does not guess the correct amount post their picture on your blog and place them under a section called crooks.
How sad is it that people would try and claim something that does not belong to them?

Man... I have lost money before and it sucks. On the other side it is going to be almost impossible to figure out whose money it really is. I mean without a wallet or some identifiying peice... On the other side, what is your time worth?
I would just drop the money at some charity.

1. Post note: "I found a dollar on the floor. Visit www.rustybrick.com/money and fill out the short form to make a claim."
2. Form: Name, email, phone, website address.
3. Add them to your newsletter. Send everybody who answers $1 by PayPal. Profit!

I once found $60 in a parking lot. I kept it. I figured that there would be no way to find out who it was. However, giving it to a charity would have been nicer.
But, since even if you do #3 it will probably be really hard to find the person who really lost it, I think you should just keep it.
If you do decide to give it to charity, you could always post a note by the elevator saying, "If you lost $___ the other day, the money has been donated to ____________." That way, at least they can feel good knowing that their lost money went to something good instead of just going into someone else's wallet.
But, if it were me, I would probably keep it. I guess I'm selfish.

Say you found "Something of value" but don't say what was found.

Keep it for a couple of weeks, and if nobody asked if you found money, then go for #1 or #2..

I found about $800 to 1,000 in cash (All $20’s) once while working at a grocery store. It was in a lady’s wallet. I saw the cash while checking for an ID so I could announce the name over the intercom. The lady who lost it came up to the front desk just as I was about to make the announcement. She asked if anyone had found a pink wallet. I said “Yeah! – I found it over there. - Here you go! :^)”… The lady yelled “Give it to me!” as she angrily snatched it out of my hands. Then… She quickly looked for the cash and walked away without saying a word.
