Is Your Server Room in the Stall?

stall serverThe other day I wrote about how I have moved JewishTweets notified me of a popular recent story named The Stalled Server Room.

The short story is that this company's server room is now part of the office's bathroom. Too make a long story short, the company had to switch offices. But the new office in the building did not have room for a server room. So they put the server room in a closet that is only accessible through the woman's bathroom.

Here is the email from the building management company:

As you all are aware, we have new tenants that have moved into the 2nd floor suites. The access to the server room is now via the women’s bathroom.

There will be a sign on the woman’s door that can be changed
from OPEN to CLOSED and vice versa.

Should you need to enter the server room, please change the sign
to CLOSED. Once you are done, please change it back to OPEN.

Once you enter the bathroom, you will be able to access the
server room via the handicapped stall. Please close the stall
door prior to entry, just in case someone doesn’t see that the
bathroom is closed.

I know this isn’t ideal, but if we adhere to this protocol, I
don’t think anyone will be disrupted.

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions.

And I was complaining about moving domains to a new server. Imagine if I had to move my servers into a bathroom.

Boring Weekend, Got a Tie

It has been a long time since I had a boring weekend. In fact, I miss them. Nothing like being able to sit around, watch TV and just relax. So after work on Sunday, I came home, got a quick hair cut and then got a tie. After that, I went home and simply relaxed.

I got a green tie, I don't have many green ties.

In any event, I really want this 8-bit tie. Maybe one day, someone will buy it for me and Ill have an excuse to wear it.

Old Man by Neil Young : One of My Favorite Songs

Many of you know I am a Neil Young fan. But I am not sure I told you about the first time I remember hearing his music. I believe it started with a song called, "Old Man." I first heard the song when I was maybe 9 years-old. I borrowed my older brother's mix tape (mix tapes, too funny) and walkman (walkman, too funny) for a class trip. No idea what was on the tape, I just wanted something to listen to while on the bus trip. I remember listening to it on the way there and really enjoying the song.

So I decided to post some YouTube videos of Neil Young performing Old Man throughout his career. Here they are:

How Far Can You Drive on Empty?

Almost EmptyI live in New York, but I am about 20 minutes from New Jersey. New Jersey gas prices are much cheaper than New York prices - so I typically like to fill-up in New Jersey, when I pass through.

Yesterday morning the gas tank light went on. I was too busy to get gas in the morning and in the afternoon when I went out to pick up a bite, I was too lazy to stop for gas. On the way home, I learned about possible news that required me to drive to New Jersey. So I decided to hold out and see if I can make it 20 minutes to the first gas station in New Jersey.

Typically, I make these decisions when I am driving solo. But my wife was with me this time and she doesn't like it when the gas light is on. Which wife does? :) But she braved the drive with me and we pulled up to the gas station and filled up for $4.01 per gallon. Then, as we continued down the highway, I noticed gas stations selling gas for $3.55, I was bummed we didn't try to go longer and get that price.

This is not the first time I wrote about this topic, I wrote about driving on empty with my old car as well. Note the image above really doesn't due justice to the dial, the dial was on empty and the light was orange for a long long time.

So how far can you go?

It's Official: I'm The Short Stumpy One

Last night, my wife's sister got engaged to a wonderful guy she has been going out with for almost two years (I think that it's been almost two years). So last night, we had a small party for the family, to celebrate. I won't get into the details of the party or stuff like that but I will tell you that it is now official --- I am the short and stumpy one. Yes, I am leading myself up for some fun comments below, but hey - it's fun.

Here is a picture of the (now) three brother-in-laws:

brother-in-laws

I masked their faces because I didn't obtain approval from them to post the picture and it is actually funnier this way.

Okay, guess who I am... Yea, that is me on the left. Then the most senior brother-in-law, in the middle, who has taught me a lot and guided me through joining the new family. Then the new brother-in-law, who is still skinny and tall (that will change) is on the right. Notice the progression. Typically, I should be in the middle, since I was married for a shorter period of time - but I break the rules.

So there you have it. My fate has been sealed. I am the short and stumpy brother-in-law and son-in-law. But I am proud to be in that position. At least I don't fall in between and no one notices me ;-).

In any event, Mazol Tov! Welcome to the family and I look forward to squeezing into my tuxedo at the wedding!

Let's Pool Together to Buy .SEO & .SEM TLDs

TLDs for $300KMany of you already saw the article from the Wall Street Journal named Web Domains Could Expand Broadly Under New Plan.

If not, in short it says, the company that manages the domain names, ICANN, said they will be offering a plan for companies and organizations to purchase their own TLD (top level domain). A told level domain is the .com or .net or .co.il portion of the domain name. So www.cartoonbarry.com's TLD is the .com. Now, I do not own the .com portion, I own the cartoonbarry portion.

ICANN is structuring a way to allow the sale of TLDs. So if IBM wanted their own TLD, they can get .ibm. If New York City wanted their own TLD, they can get .nyc. But it doesn't come cheap. The Wall Street Journal said the "cost somewhere between $100,000 and $500,000."

It isn't a crazy or unreasonable price. I say, we (SEOs & SEMs) pool together funds under an organization (SEMPO?) to purchase .SEO and .SEM (.SMO for socials?). What you think? Worth it? Think Google will ban the .seo TLDs before they even come out? ;-)

Moving ~200 Domains to New Name Servers & Location

DomainsWhooaaa....

In the past 24 hours or so, my brother and I went through a list of about 200 domains and moved all of them, except about 15 - which we are waiting on. We are moving to new managed hosting provider and we need to move the name servers as well.

The past week we moved all the sites, including this blog, to the new servers. We first updated the old name servers to point the sites to the new IP address, or the new servers. Once that was set and everything was tested as working, we imported all of our name server records (about 200) and moved them all. Keep in mind, we don't act as the name server for all our sites, but probably most of them.

I would say about half of those domain names were easy to move, because either the client made the change in their domain registrar or I had access to make those changes for them. The other half required me to obtain the registrar login information from the customer. Most of them have no clue what a domain registrar is anyway, so getting that information - was not fun.

In any event, we are almost done - only have 17 domain names left. Once we move the rest off, then we are freed completely from our old hosting provider. As you can tell, I am looking forward to that day. My realistic goal is to be freed completely no later then this Monday.

So, I'll likely move the meeting to a different date.

Asking For Cost Discounts

Piggy BankI am not the type of person to ask people for discounts. I just feel ashamed to ask people to give me a discount on the price they gave me. Why? Level of respect? Someone gives you a price, you would hope they give you the best possible price they can. This doesn't mean I never ever ask for a "best price," I do on occasion, depending on the situation, but I would say I rarely ever do that.

Do I have look down to people who always ask for discounts? No way! In fact, my mom is great at it. I think it is great. But it isn't for me - not my personality.

How about when clients or prospects ask me for a discount? I can tell you that I never discount my prices to prospects. I give a prospect a price and I stick with it. I believe I am giving them the best possible price. Some prospects ask if I can come down on price and I 99.9999% always say no, this is the best price. If I can do better on the price, why would I have not done that from the start? I don't believe on getting more money out of people who won't ask for discounts. I believe in giving everyone a fair price.

There is a whole part two to this post, but I don't think I will write that now. Maybe later...

Level Them Freon

Freon CheckIt all started with me sleeping on the sofa, my A/C unit broke. I had the service guy come three times and I am losing trust in my air conditioner, for obvious reasons.

The first time, I was told that the Freon level was overcharged. Meaning, the fan was on, but the compressor shut off cause it was "over charged". Supposedly, putting too much freon in the air conditioner will overcharge the compressor and it won't cool the house. Having too little freon will cause the compression not to cool the house as well.

So when they came the first time, they adjusted those levels. But they didn't do it 100% correctly. So they came back two days later to re-level the freon. Now, a week and a half later, I had them come back again. This time, the A/C unit worked for them when they came back. He did nothing to the freon levels.

He did say that the Freon levels are "almost perfect" and now that it is working, he doesn't want to change them. If it stops working again, call him and they will come back and adjust the levels slightly to make them 100% perfect. He also suggested that they might move the thermostat - but he doesn't think that is the issue.

So now, I am in wait mode. Wait for it to fail to call them back so they can play with it again. Not 100% happy but it could be worse, a lot worse - I do have it good.

How do they test Freon levels? The picture above from this site shows exactly what the AC guy was doing. The tank hooks up to those pressure gauges, which hooks up to the AC unit, somewhere. The pressure gauges tell you if the levels are proper. Supposedly, it is good to get those levels before every season.

Losing Trust in One of My Air Conditioners

flickrA few weeks ago, I told you how my air conditioner broke. Well, they fixed it and then it broke two days later. They fixed it again and it lasted about a week and a half and then it broke again last night.

I am lucky to have a separate AC unit for the bedroom level. But that is the AC unit that keeps on breaking. This weekend, we had guests sleep over - thankfully the AC unit worked throughout the weekend and pretty much died about 12 hours after they left. But now it is broken and I am losing trust in it.

In fact, I was incredibly worried that the AC wouldn't work for my guests. After the guests left, I thought to myself, "maybe it is fixed for good." Soon after, it stopped working. Did I jinx myself?

The sad thing is, it will take a while for me to be confident in it working.

Quick Dinner: How To Go Out To Eat Quickly

flickrLast night, I went out to eat at a normal sit down restaurant in NYC. From the time that I sat down, to the time my food was off my plate, was probably less than five minutes. How did I manage to go out for dinner, order, have them prepare the food, serve us the food and finish the food all within five minutes?

I cheated. My wife and some family were in the city. My wife wanted me to pick her up, so she incentivized me by buying me breaded chicken and french fries (I am a sucker for breaded chicken and french fries). So she went to the restaurant, ordered, and they brought out the food. By the time I got there, they were almost done with their meals and I just arrived. I scarfed down the meal within five minutes and was ready to head back home.

It was a long day but well worth it. My day looked like this:

  • 5:30am up
  • 6:15am in office
  • 7:15pm out of office
  • 8:15pm in city at restaurant
  • 8:20pm done with meal
  • 8:45pm or so on way home
  • 9:45pm finally home

FYI, how great does that picture go with the title, "Quick Dinner." I crack myself up. :)

A Wedding Present Two Years Late or a Huge Bed, Bath & Beyond Wedding Registry Bug?

UPS just arrived with several deliveries, but one delivery stood out as being weird. I received a package from Bed, Bath & Beyond. The package was originally mailed to my old home, but somehow reached my office's address (UPS is smart like that). I opened the box to find that it was a present, here is a picture:

Two Year Late Wedding Gift via Bed, Bath & Beyond

Yippie! But I decided to look closer. I noticed the gift card and read it. It reads:

Two Year Late Wedding Gift via Bed, Bath & Beyond

Oxo Good Grips 11" WhiskI scratched my head... Who is this Amy? I decided to look at the packing slip. I noticed on the packing slip that this was ordered just about a week ago. Who would mail me a gift over two years after my wedding? I looked at the name and called my wife. We both had no idea who it was.

I assumed at that point that something is wrong. I received a gift from someone's registry. Did someone accidently purchase something from my registry, which is still live at Bed, Bath & Beyond!

This brought me back to an older post I did at the Search Engine Roundtable named Wedding Registries Being Indexed Causing Fraudulent Registry Orders. It seemed like people were buying items off my wedding registry and shipping it to other places. Yes, I believe we didn't get everything that was 'purchased' off our register. Is the same thing happening to a different new couple? Did I get their gift? Doesn't seem 100% logical.

I am not sure what is going on. But I will make sure to return the Oxo Good Grips 11" Whisk to Bed, Bath & Beyond and have them deal with this mess.

Great Storage Option: Sterilite 0142 Cabinet

Sterilite 0142We recently hired three new programmers, once about a month ago and two new coders who are starting in within a week or so. The coder who started has a nice desk already, which he enjoys. The two new guys have place, but we wanted to open things up a bit.

In the "client specialists room, i.e. the programmer room, we had a corner where we stacked up food. Literally, tons of food, stacked up in the corner of the room. It is actually a place for a programmer to work, but it was covered in food and papers. So we decided to buy a Sterilite Cabinet to place all that food in. Guess what, it really all fit - we didn't think it would. The Sterilite Cabinet has huge capacity. It is great for solutions like this.

In the picture above, you can see we put the cabinet on the right of the fridge. BTW, yes we have two microwaves - one for kosher and one for non-kosher (maybe ill blog on that later). It fit perfectly. The cabinet's new location was the place of our water cooler (check out that comments on that blog post btw). We moved that water cooler, which is no longer from Sunbeam,to a new location. The office looks much cleaner.

There are still a lot of things we need to do to organize the office but we are getting there.

Alexa is Wrong or Different

Yesterday, someone asked me if the Search Engine Roundtable's traffic is down. I said no, why? He explained that the Alexa chart showed a decline in traffic.

I decided to plot that graph with true Google Analytics data, to see if there was a decline. Here it is:

Alexa Data Bad

The bolder blue line is Google Analytics and the chart behind it is from Alexa. I just overlaid the Google Analytics line over Alexa.

So what is with the decline in Alexa in May? Alexa updated their ranking system. So the new chart, I guess, wasn't normalized with the old chart.

Remote Check Deposit in Action

I have been talking about remote check deposit for a while and I was finally approved to get this service for free with my bank. I received the machine on Monday and it worked. So today, I wanted to demo to you how it works.

Here is a video showing how I go to a web page, enter in some information and click a button. After I click the button, the web site triggers the remote check deposit machine, which is connected via USB to the computer, to scan the check. The check is scanned and it prints a number or two on the back of the check. Then the web site is updated with the scanned check. Here is a video of the process that I made:

Note: If the video doesnt work, refresh this page and try again. YouTube has been having issues...

As you can see, it is pretty fun. If I would have 20 checks, you load them all in, and it will auto-feed all 20 checks. Then it balances your deposits and you submit it to your bank account.

For more on Remote Check Deposit, check out the Federal Reserve's web site, they have an awesome FAQ on it.

Forgot to Activate Smoke Alarms :: 7 Months Later

flickrSo I have been in my new house for over seven months now. This week, I noticed that I forgot to remove the piece of paper between the battery and the smoke detectors in the upstairs bedrooms. Yes, with that paper in, the smoke detectors won't work.

You think I am dumb, don't you? Well, I am not.

Two days before we moved into the house, I had an alarm company come and install a full home safety system. Besides for burglary, we have fire, smoke, and carbon detection systems. So, those smoke/fire/carbon detectors are all working and configured. The ones that were not working were the cheap smoke detectors that came with the house.

Honestly, I have such piece of mind leaving my house overnight. Knowing that if there is fire or smoke in the house and the "central station" would automatically be notified, is a relief.

Anyway, I have activated those cheap smoke detectors, as backups.

Mohamedimran Stole My Icon/Logo/Avatar!

Beu notified me that he spotted someone who stole Cartoon Me (Barry). His alias is Mohamedimran and if you visit his StumbleUpon profile you will see this:

My Stolen Avatar

How crazy. Makes me mad, upset, kind of makes me feel violated!

He is 21 years old and from AN, India. Now, the crazy thing is, this is not the first guy from India to steal my trademark or name. There was an India SEO Company Impersonating RustyBrick back in October of 2006.

So what is up India? Is this common practice?

Update: On June 20th he replies to me saying:

Hi Rustybrick, thanks for the message,i have to tell you onething, i'm not using yours friend, i saw this pic in a website, it appears good and so cute, it seems like me. so i decided to use it as my avatar in my Social Network Pages.... thats all...

Yes, he is still using my avatar.

Update 2: He has now changed his avatar to something else. He said:

sry friend, i didn't understood, now its ok, i'll change as soon as possible.... Once again i have to say "I'm Really sry"

be my friend....!

Thank you Mohamedimran.

My Home Network

I was blogging about my Linksys router that died and told you I had two wireless networks in my house. Let me explain.

Verizon FiOS installed their wireless router and modem in my basement. The wireless router's signal is pretty good, but isn't as strong as I would like it upstairs on the bedroom level. The house came pre-wired for Ethernet, so, it wasn't a big deal to set up two wireless networks. One in the basement and one in the upstairs bedroom level. I also have hard-wired ethernet ports (two more) on the main level.

Here is a picture of my home network (clearly this is a crude layout). Bottom floor is basement, middle floor is main level and upper floor is bedroom area. Everything else is clearly labeled.

Home Wireless Network

All my wireless access points are locked down, unlike my neighbors. :)

My Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router Died

Linksys Wireless-G Travel RouterIn December 2006, I hinted that my wife buy me a Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router. I think, I bought it a few days later for myself. In any event, Saturday night, the thing stopped working.

I believe it is something with the power supply. The power LED light simply won't turn on, no matter how many wall outlets or surge protectors I plug it into.

I actually used this device for my home's upstairs wireless network. Yes, I have two wireless networks in my house. I guess I can do a post on why I have two networks later.

So after about 10 months of the router being used every day, it blew up. I think from over use. This is a travel router and I assume it is not meant to be used 24/7, non-stop. But yet, it has a 3-year warranty. So I used the live chat thing on the Linksys web site, got myself a case number and issued an RMA. I will mail it to Linksys for replacement today.

I have one concern, thanks to Steve E, he showed me this blog post about Linksys losing his hardware and RMA information. Hope that doesn't happen to me.

Of course, I will let you know either way.

Why Google's Matt Cutts Reminds Me of My Older Brother, Adam

Why I was sitting in the You&A With Matt Cutts session at SMX Advanced a couple weeks ago, I twittered "mattcutts so reminds me of my older brother." Matt then asked me about that twitter the next day - but I couldn't really give a good answer. The other day, I was thinking about it...

Before beginning, I am not sure how Adam, my brother, is going to like this post. I doubt he will mind, but I am sure he won't like to be the spotlight of a blog post here. So, I am sorry in advance.

AdamAdam, my older brother, is a Rabbi in Israel. He works with teenagers who are not exactly on the right path. In a sense, he is somewhat of a social worker or guidance counselor. From what I know, he balances the line of being part of "the law" and at the same time, being friends for these kids. I know there is a line, but from what I understand, many kids trust him and go to my brother for advice and support.

Adam has learned over the years how to speak with these kids. He uses words that reach out to them and it is his hope that they use his words in daily practices. Kind of like a "moral compass" but not exactly.

Just picture how careful he has to be with his words. He can't jump down these kids throats or else they won't trust him and won't come back to him for advice. So when talking, he kind of has to be somewhat of a diplomate and be sure not to touch on sensitive points in the wrong way.

MattMatt Cutts, the famous Googlers, who deals with webmasters and SEOs all day - is kind of in the same position. Each day, he has to be careful how he words things, as to not harm his relationship with the webmaster community. Matt has earned the trust of many webmasters. He, like my brother, has earned the respect, trust and friendship of many of those who practice actions that are not in accordance with Google's terms of service (TOS).

When Matt talks to webmasters, either publicly or one-to-one, I hear that same out reaching voice of concern. When it comes to certain tactics that webmasters can deploy to trick Google or the searcher, you can hear it in his voice. You can hear how his appeal is genuine, genuine to the industry and to the betterment of the searchers world.

Matt has to balance his speech to make sure he draws that line in the sand, that he is "the law." But at the same time, he wants to keep the line of communication open so that there is a healthy dialog between webmasters and Google. This way, he act as the "moral compass" in his venue.

I am not sure if this makes much sense. I really think it is about the tone I hear in their voices when they both have to balance on that line. They both know that line is easy to cross over and once they cross over it, it is really hard to get back on it.

I'm Pretty Good at Ping Pong

flickrWhen I was a kid, I use to play a ton of ping pong. I believe I played a ton when I was around the age of 11 through 15, but I can be wrong about that age bracket. In any event, I was a kid.

Slowly, I had less and less time and interest in playing ping pong and the ping pong table at my parents home began to cave in - so I stopped playing all together.

My brother recently received a ping pong table from his father-in-law and I was over twice in the past few weeks. I played a couple times when I was over. I am still pretty good.

When I was younger, I played like crazy. I had a wicked serve. I had some wicked slices, spins, backhands and overhead slams. As I played the game the other day, it all started coming back to me. I am still pretty good. Not as good as I once was, but pretty good.

In fact, I wouldn't mind getting a ping pong table to play more often in my home. Maybe one day - I just need to find some good competition. I am sure there are some people in my area that aren't bad.

Google Reader for iPhone Makes it Harder To Get to Original Entry

Last night I said that Google removed the "original item" link from the Google Reader iPhone version. Well, I was partially correct. They removed the link from the bottom but enabled the circle/chevron image next to the title of the entry as a hyperlink to the original entry. In fact, a Google Reader Engineer pointed this out to me.

To be honest, I tried that out before even complaining, but my finger had issues clicking on the tiny icon. So after Mihai Parparita of Google told me that is the link that takes you to the original entry, I tried harder. If I use the corner tip of my index finger, I can trigger the link to open to the original entry - but it isn't easy. Here is a video of me trying to do it:

This is the icon you have to click on: Google Reader Circle Icon

On the iPhone, it is really really tiny.

Maybe Google can make the title a hyperlink also?

Jeremy Zawdony Leaves Yahoo: First Favorite Blogger

To many of you, I have been blogging forever. But I have only been blogging since 2003. Jeremy Zawdony started blogging in 2002 and he was probably my first favorite blogger. I have been following his blog since then for years.

So, when today, he announced he is leaving Yahoo to work at a "smaller company." Yes, we all know a lot is going on with Yahoo now, and we hear rumors of a major announcement in 30 minutes from Yahoo, but Jeremy says he is not leaving for any of those reasons. 8.5 years at Yahoo and now on to bigger but smaller things. :)

In any event, Jeremy has been a role model blogger to me. I personally learned a lot about blogging from him. In fact, it was an honor to speak on a panel with Jeremy at PubCon, the panel was named Blogging For Fun & Profit. Here is a picture, although you can't see Jeremy (look for arrows pointing him out), he is hiding behind the podium when I was speaking:

My Asterisk/Fonality PBX Almost Blows Up

As some of you know, for a PBX system at RustyBrick, I use an open source platform named Asterisk, supported by Fonality.

This morning, most incoming and outgoing calls stopped working. We tried rebooting the server and it had some major disk failures. Here is a picture of the box running Fedora, recovering from the disk failures all on its own:

Asterisk/Fonality Server Mailfunction

Several minutes later, the system appeared to recover. The picture here is a picture of Fonality loaded up on a Dell box - pretty cool, ehh...

Asterisk/Fonality Server Mailfunction

Anyway, it recovered by the phone calls did not work. So I called Fonality support, something I rarely do, and pressed the emergency number. Shortly after, I got someone on the call who took care of the issue. He quickly figured out it was an issue with the caller id handler, it was an unsupported version. So he pushed down a supported version and we were back on track to placing and accepting phone calls.

This is the exact reason I wanted a supported solution. Going with Fonality allows me to support open source and also get support for my system.

I've written about Fonality in the past. I did a Features in 4.0 review as well as a full Fonality review in the past. I am still a happy Fonality user, even after 2.5 years.

Should You Treat Employees As Friends?

flickrAd Age wrote an article a couple weeks back that caught my attention. The article was named Do Bossfriends Create Great Employees? which takes the side that being friends with your employees create great employees. The argument he makes is that the more your employees like you, the more they will do for you. But I find the whole concept of being friends with employees to make them better employees to be, um..., somewhat oxymoronic. How so you ask? Well, if you're friendly to your employees only because you want them to be better employees, then your true intentions seem way off. Not sure if I am getting my point across - but to fake to be friendly in an effort to make for better employees, imo, will back fire.

My take? I don't believe employers should be on a friend relationship level. I have some of the best employees here at RustyBrick, but I make an effort to not cross the line of being their friends. Why? Not because I don't like them - it's the opposite. I really like every one of my staff members. They are all talented, creative, hard-working, honest and most importantly good people. They have the qualities I look for in friends.

But I don't feel an employer should be a friend with their employees. I personally don't think going out for drinks with employees is something I would think is appropriate. I don't think hanging with employees is a good thing. That doesn't mean I don't believe in going to an employees happy or sad occasion - but I feel there should be some sort of line drawn.

Maybe it was the way I was raised. Who knows.

Does this leave for a stale company culture at RustyBrick? No way! The guys often go out for lunch together during the day. I believe some hang on the weekends, go to baseball games, play video games in the office on Friday afternoons and much more.

In the future, I hope to write a blog post giving your more details on the RB staff. It should be fun, but it will take a while for me to start on that.

I Don't Like Sharing My Gadgets

flickrWhen it comes to sharing my gadgets, I am a bit of a germy. I just don't like people touching my laptop, my iPhone or any of my gadgets. I am very possessive about them and I admit, it is a bit selfish.

Why don't I like sharing my gadgets?

(1) I am very protective over them, very (see my cartoon above, it has my bag, I always have my bag of stuff with me).
(2) Fear of breaking it
(3) Fear of losing it
(4) My life is on my gadgets
(5) I need to always be able to use my gadgets at any time, even if I won't need it a 100%

Last week or so, I found a study that shows I am not alone. Spotted via Science Blogs reports that Mac users are way more possessive then PC users. Yes, I am a Mac user and I guess I fit in that group.

The poll found "there's a dramatic and statistically significant difference between how much PC and Mac users let friends try out their new devices."

So TUAW posted their own poll:

How willing are you to let others use your new gadget?

  • They must not touch said 389 Mac users (12.3%)
  • They can hold it, but not press any buttons said 159 Mac users (5.0%)
  • They can try it out for a few minutes while I supervise said 2166 Mac users (68.5%)
  • They can try it out for up to an hour, unsupervised said 362 Mac users (11.4%)
  • They can borrow it for a couple days said 65 Mac users (2.1%)
  • They can have it -- I didn't really want it anyway said 20 Mac users (0.6%)

I replied "They can hold it, but not press any buttons."

Sleeping on the Sofa : Air Conditioning Broke

The past few nights I was forced to sleep on the sofa. It was a first for me, since being married for over two years now. But my wife didn't send me to the sofa, she actually slept with me on the sofa.

Sunday night, the first night of Shavous, one of my A/C units broke down. My parents were spending the holiday at us, it was the first time they pulled an overnighter at our place. Sunday night, we all slept upstairs (well, actually, my father and I spent the night learning in Synagogue). By the morning, it was 79 degrees upstairs. It only got worse. By midday it was in the 80s and it got as high as 91 degrees upstairs. So Monday night, we slept on the main level.

My wife and I slept in the family room, with the light on, by pulling two sofas together. Here is a picture of that.
A/C Broken - Sleeping on Sofa

My parents slept in our dinning room, on two mattresses I brought downstairs for them.

We slept like that from Monday through last night. This morning, the A/C people came to fix the A/C. I believe all it needed was Freon.

Thankfully, the A/C units on the main level worked. If we had one unit, I am not sure what we would have done. I honestly need a good night sleep. I can't wait to go to sleep tonight.

Blogs Are Working & Load Balanced

After a couple more hours of trial and error, I believe the blogs are now configured correctly. In fact, they are set up to be fully load balanced on two web servers and one database server.

We had some issues with comments being over written, but with a new rsync command, we got them working nicely.

Here is the new server architecture for our blogs:

Load Balanced Page and Comment Server Cluster

This is very exciting because if a server blows up, you should still be able to comment and stuff without noticing. Plus, the strain on the servers can be offloaded to each other. Very exciting. :)

June 8, 2008

FYI - This Blog Has Some Issues

So we moved all the blogs to a new server. This one, none of the others, is having issues.

Your comments will time out but eventually appear on the blog posts. So keep that in mind.

I will try to figure out why this particular blog is having issues, while all the others are working fine.

One More Test

This is another test. Feel free to ignore.

Testing New Server

So, I switched over the blogs from our old server configuration to a new one. We are on a new IP, in fact, the servers are load balanced.

Thing is, we need to sync the blog posts, which produces HTML files to one server, and then sync it back to the other server. Not a big deal. But when someone comments, they might comment on one server and at the same time, someone might be commenting on another server. So at some points, it may not show your comment for a specific time period (5 minutes), until everything get's synced up properly.

Anyway, this is just a test post to see if things are being synced properly.

Shavuot (שבועות): Offline Monday & Tuesday

flickrThis Sunday night is the start of the Shavuot (שבועות) holiday. That means that I will be offline, no blogging, no email, no phone, for a 50 hour period or so. I am offline Monday and Tuesday - so please don't email me or call me and leave a voicemail. Also, please make sure there is no news during those two days. ;-)

What is Shavout? Um, I talked about it last year, so go read it here.

For those of you celebrating - good Yom Tov. For those of you not - have a happy Monday and Tuesday.

My wife and I are having my parents over, so that should be fun.

Don't expect any blog posts here during those days. We do have scheduled blog posts for the Search Engine Roundtable.

Oh, what is with the picture? It is from Noyaart.com, I found it at Flickr.

Note To Self: Stick With Red Eye Flights

red eyeI have complained time and time again in my travel section about taking red eye flights. I have always vowed to avoid them. Well, for the first time in a west coast to east coast flight, I took a mid-day flight out of the west to go east.

I conned myself into believing that since my flight was leaving at 11:30ish PST, that it was already late afternoon in New York and I wouldn't be swamped with emails after the 5 hour flight. Oh boy was I wrong. I landed in Newark and the first thing I did was download email on my iPhone. I was hit with hundreds of emails! I don't get hundreds of real emails over night.

So, from now on, I am going to be taking the red eyes. At least until they get Internet access on these planes. If they had internet access, I would be able to fly 24/6, I won't care when, as long as it is not on a Saturday.

Why does it bother me so much to have hundreds of emails that I need to review, respond to and file away? As some of you know, I have email OCD and it really really impacts me.

My First Experience Down The Blue Carpet

blue carpetI'm actually sitting on the plane thinking up a totally worthless blog post that I can write on my iPhone. The time in Seattle is 4:05 as I begin this post.

I figured I would discuss my trip down the continental blue carpet. Before doing so, I want to tell you that I wanted to create this whole stupid skit that I thought would be 'stupid funny' to do well on YouTube.

The idea was for me to video myself as I experience the blue carpet. Start off by approaching the carpet carefully. Being very careful as I step on the carpet for the first time, as one would do when going in to a cold pool of water. Then I would learn to trust the carpet more as the carpet trusted me more. Yea, the girly music would start playing in the background.

Then to be really funny, I might begin to lay down on the carpet as if it was a bed, ie totally trusting the blue carpet.

Now if this story board was placed on storybids.com, would continental airlines buy into it?

That was my plan but by the time I ended up at the blue carpet, the carpet was in use. So my plan failed.

This post is now done. It is now 4:13 and I typed it all on my iPhone. Not bad. (added after, the point was to see how fast I can type a blog entry on my phone).

Fake Employees Adding Themselves to My Facebook Company

facebook logoYou know how you can "Search by Company" in Facebook? Well, I recently noticed that a couple Facebook users who are not and were never part of my company, were listed in my company directory in Facebook.

So, I asked around if there was an easy way, as the company admin in Facebook, to remove false employees. No one had an answer, and some people asked me to blog about it when I did get the answer.

So I decided to use the report abuse form at Facebook to ask them. Last night, I received a response that said:

These users are not in your work network. Unfortunately, there is no way to remove this information. Sorry for the inconvenience. Let me know if you have other questions or problems.

Thanks for contacting Facebook,

Well, it seems like one of the users - who was actually pretty good looking, was removed. I assume it was a fake account and they banned that account. The other user, Ernest Lau Facebook ID 14304505, is still listed in my company profile. So, if I wanted to edit my work profile and list myself under, um - Facebook, that would be cool with them? I doubt it.

Anyway, if you want to become a friend of mine on Facebook, here is my profile. While you are at it, my twitter account and linkedin account.

I'm Elite! Earned Elite Status on Continental

I am finally there. I am elite! I have elite status on Continental Airlines. This year, I promised I would stick with one airline in order to gain enough miles to give me some type of perk. My flight to Seattle a couple days ago earned me the 326 + miles I needed to obtain the 25,000+ miles to gain the silver Elite status.

What does Elite Status look like. Here is a screen shot of my account at continental.com:

Elite Status on Continental

It also changes at least one thing on some other pages. I now see I am automatically added to the upgrade list. I know I won't see those upgrades, because they go to platinum and then gold members before silver ones, like me. But at least it is there:

Elite Status on Continental

My complimentary upgrade feature is automatically on.

Why am I writing all of this? Because I wanted this type of information when I was researching it and no one blogged it. So maybe this will help someone in the future looking for this information.

In any event, tomorrow I get to board the plane on the blue carpet. I think my life is now complete.

Catching People Reading Your Blog

It use to be weird for me to see people reading my blogs. But now, not so much.

Just a few minutes ago, I caught the person on my left and on my right reading blog posts I wrote hours before. Not only that, the person on my left was reading both SER and SEL.

Here is a picture for proof:

This is to tease Matt. It actually is part of Matt talking about his SafeSearch filter, which removes porn from image search. So again, just a Matt tease.

Part of My Mobile Arsenal

I've talked about my mobile gear in the past. Last night, I took some of my mobile stuff out and put it in the bathroom. I then thought, this makes for a blog post. So here it is:

Mobile Brush & Stuff

Meet my mobile hair brush, mobile tooth brush, mobile tooth paste and mobile scope. I have other mobile items, but they didn't make it into this photo.

The mobile hair brush is a bit hard to use. It really doesn't do a good job brushing my hair. But it is mobile and I really don't care if my hair doesn't look pretty.

My Brother's Bear Gets Tranquilized By My Parents Home

Friday afternoon, a bear paid a visit to my brother's home, about a mile from my home. The bear was having lunch, which consisted of my brother's left-over garbage from his garbage baskets. The cops came, and threw rocks at the bear until the bear left through his backyard and into the woods.

My reaction to that was, how did that help? Won't it wander back to a home and possibly be a threat to someone else?

Sunday, the local paper reported that a bear was found just a couple blocks from where I grew up. Reportedly, hundreds of kids began looking for the bear and chasing it with the police and other emergency services. The bear climbed up a tree to get away from the crowds. Finally the Department of Environmental Conservation came and shot the bear with a tranquilizer gun and packed it into a cylindrical metal container.

Curbside Check In - Worth It?

Jesse Jackson @ LGAThe only time I check bags is when I am wife my wife. Every other time I go to the airport, it is wife a carry on.

Sometimes we use what is called the curbside check in. Basically, you pay an extra fee to check your bags and get your tickets outside of the airport, on the curb.

What I find funny is that often the curbside check in lines are longer then the lines inside. Imagine this:

CURB IS OVER HERE
------------------\\//--
WALL HERE----ENTER--
------------------\\//--
NORMAL CHECK IN HERE

So, basically, if you understand my ASCII illustration, you will notice that many checkin counters are on the other side of the wall, like two more feet in, passed the curbside checkin area.

Not only do you not have to wait on a line outside, you can also checkin without paying an extra fee.

Am I missing something? What is the benefits of the curbside check in, in today's day and age?

Oh, the picture above is when I was checking in at the curb and I saw Jesse Jackson at LGA about two years ago.
