So I have been in my new house for over seven months now. This week, I noticed that I forgot to remove the piece of paper between the battery and the smoke detectors in the upstairs bedrooms. Yes, with that paper in, the smoke detectors won't work.
You think I am dumb, don't you? Well, I am not.
Two days before we moved into the house, I had an alarm company come and install a full home safety system. Besides for burglary, we have fire, smoke, and carbon detection systems. So, those smoke/fire/carbon detectors are all working and configured. The ones that were not working were the cheap smoke detectors that came with the house.
Honestly, I have such piece of mind leaving my house overnight. Knowing that if there is fire or smoke in the house and the "central station" would automatically be notified, is a relief.
Anyway, I have activated those cheap smoke detectors, as backups.

Did the same thing with ADT when I moved in to my new house. Want to get carbon monoxide detectors added on. Also, I use a VOIP phone for my home phone and also have a dedicated landline phone just for the alarm. This way if the electricity goes out (like it did last week for 4 nights) the alarm can still phone home. Extra $20 a month is well worth the peace of mind !!!
