Dots in Gmail Addresses: It's Me?

I have a Gmail account that I rarely use, but it is mine. The Gmail account is barry.schwartz@. But for the past several months, I randomly get emails made out to barryschwartz@, yes, without the dot.

So I figured the people were emailing the wrong person, i.e. not emailing barryschwartz@ but mistakenly emailing barry.schwartz@. I am wrong, they are emailing barryschwartz@, the one without the dot, the one I did not registered.

In fact, Google is clear about dots, saying they don't matter. Here is a screen capture:

Gmail Addresses with Dots

Google is being smart and saying, "Yes, this is you." Google links me to this page, where it describes that "If you created yourusername@gmail.com, no one can ever register your.username@gmail.com, or Your.user.name@gmail.com."

So, I guess you can email me at b.a.r.r.y......s.c.h.w.a.r.t.z@gmail.com, if you want. And, yes, it works, here is a screen shot of me getting a test email sent to that address:

Gmail Emails

The sad part of this is that I cannot reply to this email to tell this company that I am not the Barry Schwartz they are looking for.

Second A/C Unit Fails - Due to Freon Levels

AC UnitRemember all my A/C issues? If not, here they are in order of most recent:

This Saturday, we had family over for a big lunch. Lunch was in the dining room. The dining room and living room have their own A/C unit. That A/C unit stopped working sometime Saturday morning. So by the time we were all eating in the dining room level, it was a warm 79 degrees in that immediate area.

So I called the A/C people back to fix the issue. Did I tell you that the Wednesday before, that same unit had an issue? So they came to level the freon on that unit. So Saturday it failed again. They finally came back last night. They decided to vacuum out the freon and start fresh, like they did with the upstairs unit. So they did that last night and now it is working again.

So far, the upstairs unit has been working since they vacuumed out the freon on July 1st. It is now about a month later and it has not failed since. I still do not have faith in the A/C working, the question is, will I ever.

In any event, I hope this unit continues to work. As you can imagine, this unit failing was not as bad as the upstairs one. Why? Cause I sleeping in really hot heat is not fun. What I don't understand is how did people do this before there was AC? We are so spoiled!

Saying Goodbye To My Bank

BankI have been talking about remote check deposit for a while. I told you that I was approved for it and then showed you how remote check deposit works on video.

The only issue was that my bank initially told me that I could only hook up my business accounts to it. That was great, because most of my banking was business related. But I still had some personal banking to do. So last night, I sent my bank representative an email, asking if they could please hook up my personal accounts.

Today, I got an email that they can and have done so. So I tested it out and it worked.

I can officially say, I will rarely ever have to go to the bank again. I am sure there will be times where I need to go, i.e. wire transfers, changing account stuff, etc. But for the most part, I will rarely ever have to walk into my bank again.

I love efficiency and convenience through technology.

Why I Answer Most Operator Calls At My Office

PhonesSo I briefly mentioned that I answer most the calls in my office. Why do I do that?

We have a phone system with extensions. So it automatically answers the call and gives the caller the option to dial an extension, by name or sales/support/operator etc. If a caller is specifically looking for a person here, hopefully they will dial by extension or name. Some clients (very few) are too lazy to press the extension and they will press 0. In that case, it rings everyone's phones and the caller ID will show the client's business name. If the employee sees it is likely for them, they typically answer.

But if the call is operator, sales, support and so on and we don't know if it is a client, I try to answer.

Why? Well, most of the time - I am the one that can answer the person on the other end. Typically, the employees can't make the decision on if we want to buy X or if an ex-employee worked here in the past, and so on. So I would have to get the call anyway.

In addition, I don't want my employees distracted by the phones, unnecessarily. Programming can be very focus oriented and to lose focus over a phone call that doesn't apply to them, can kill 15 minutes - which will cost me and/or my clients money.

Also, I did not hire my employees to be a secretary. I hired them to program, design and so on. Not to answer the phones. Is it below anyone in the office to answer a phone. No way! If I, the "CEO" (I hate titles), can answer the phone, why can't anyone. But I prefer not to make them answer the phone, as I mentioned above.

Why don't I hire a secretary? Like I said above, most calls get routed properly anyway. All of our back office stuff is very automated and a secretary is really not needed here. We seriously streamlined this office like you would not believe. So no paper, no faxes, billing is automated mostly, and so on. So we don't need the cost of a secretary at this point. How big are we? We are about 15 staff members right now.

No Patience For Sales Calls, None!

Sales ManI just have zero patience for sales calls. Overall, I am an impatient person, which is one of my many flaws. But when it comes to people trying to sell me something, when I don't request it - ugh... makes me angry.

You know I am not nice to India and don't give them the time of day, but now it is worse.

Yesterday, the operator line rings from an "unknown" number. I answer it, which I typically do, cause I like to answer the phone calls (new post on that later). The person starts by saying...

Hi, my name is ABC, I am from XYZ... Before she goes on, I cut her off and say, I am not interested. Honestly, it could have been someone asking me to sell them my services. I just had this hunch from the voice and the intro that it was leading into them selling me something. So I cut it off and then thought, what if they wanted info on our services. Oh well...

Then this morning, we got two calls. One from a man with an Indian accent, who I shut down immediately. The next from a really nice sounding female, who seemed really nice. I tried to tell her no nicely, but she wouldn't accept it. So I had to be more bold in my "no" and she finally got the message.

I so hate sales calls, hate them, hate them, hate them.

Please do not call to sell me something or pitch me something, please!

iPhone Zmanim Now Accurate & Complete

Update: To be notified when the iPhone Siddur is available, please go here and fill out your email address in the box at the top right of the page.

The siddur texts are still being cleaned up and that is going well. But while we do that, we are also working on improving the iPhone Siddur, what we have done so far.

Now the Zmanim (Jewish times) are complete and accurate, up to +/- a minute based on sea-level elevation.

Here is how it works.

(1) Click on Zmanim at the bottom and you will see the program use the GPS or Cell towers or Wireless routers to detect your location and give you a longitude and latitude:

iPhone Jewish Times - Zmanim

When those are obtained, the Zmanim come up. If they are not found (i.e. your in a bomb shelter or airplane mode on), you will be able to manually add your zip code and specify the date.

(2) Here are the correct times for my area, here is the top of the page:

iPhone Jewish Times - Zmanim

Bottom of the page:

iPhone Jewish Times - Zmanim

(3) Clicking on any of those times will give you more detail. For example, here is the explanation for Alos:

iPhone Jewish Times - Zmanim
yes, we will fix that typo

(4) On the bottom, we added an "About These Times" button, when clicked, it will give you the date for these times and it currently gives you the longitude and latitude, plus the required disclaimer:

iPhone Jewish Times - Zmanim

List of To Dos:

(1) Continue cleaning up texts for the siddur
(2) Enable the edit button to change your date and location
(3) Add a settings feature for the siddur, so it remembers if you are Ashkenazic or Sephardi

After this is all complete, then we can work on some really cool features.

WAV File Voicemails Work in iPhone

The one thing I really hated about the email client in the iPhone was that it did not let you listen to WAV formatted attachments. So, my office voicemail system and home voicemail, which both emailed me my voicemails could only be heard on a computer or via calling into the voicemail.

With the new iPhone 2.0 OS, that has changed. I noticed this soon after I first got the iPhone but I decided to blog it now...

When I get a voicemail, it shows the attachment. I then click, download and once it downloads, I see the file below the email, like in this screen capture:

iPhone Supports Voicemail WAV Files
(Oh, that was Dice calling trying to sell me some programmers. Listing their phone number, I assume, is not a big deal. I am sure if you need coders or IT staff, calling that number will be welcomed.)

Now, click on the file and it will open up QuickTime audio/video player and play the voicemail via the speakers on the iPhone:

iPhone Supports Voicemail WAV Files

This feature alone is awesome!

Cleaning Up Texts For iPhone Siddur

iPhone Siddur iconUpdate: To be notified when the iPhone Siddur is available, please go here and fill out your email address in the box at the top right of the page. Friday afternoon, we launched version 1.0 of the iPhone Siddur. We did so, so we can get it out there and get it approved by Apple, so we can work now on cleaning things up and adding features.

My brother, in Israel, has been working on cleaning up the texts, to make them look more readable. He has been doing an awesome job. Here is a screen capture of Shemona Esrei (or the Amidah) within Mincha, after he cleaned it up.

Mincha Amidah on iPhone Siddur

We got the header color going, we got small text for certain text, we got small italics for instructional text, we shade the background of holiday/special texts that aren't used daily. This makes it much easier to read and follow. So we are almost done going through all the texts to make them all clean. We still have a few more on the Ashekenaz side and then the Sephardi to go. It just takes time to go through all of it. If you want to contribute to the texts and add more, do contact us and let us know.

We also will be working on more features, immediately:

  1. More zmanim including alos, tzais, earliest teffilin, and more...
  2. Add explanations (on click event) for the zmanim
  3. Add calendar feature to zmanim (so it just doesn't show today)
  4. Add ability to change your location (so it just isn't based on your GPS location)
  5. Add more texts
  6. Add a settings feature for the siddur, so it remembers if you are Ashkenazic or Sephardi.

So we will continue to develop the application out. We do hope Apple approves us quickly. In fact, I do not want to change the application (i.e. add these improvements) until Apple does approve version 1.0. Once they approve 1.0, we will release a 1.x version.

Today I Woke Up 12 Minutes Later

YawnI was strongly considering waking up later. Well, today was the first day of that trial. I woke up about 12 minutes later then I normally do.

I did the morning stuff, which now includes squinting a few times and rubbing my eyes. Then checking email, then going through morning feeds and then doing the morning bathroom routine.

I left the house 15 or so minutes later then I normally do and went to a later morning services. So my whole day is about 15 minutes lagged due to waking up ~15 minutes later.

I will try to stick to this routine for a bit and see how it goes. If all goes well, then maybe Ill go to the next level. But probably not for a while.

iPhone Siddur 1.0 Uploaded to iTunes Connect

Update: To be notified when the iPhone Siddur is available, please go here and fill out your email address in the box at the top right of the page.

We have uploaded the first release of the iPhone Siddur to the iTunes Connect system. As you can see in the screen shot below, Apple now needs to review it. When Apple approves it, it will then be available in the iTunes Store for download.

iPhone Siddur in Review of iTunes Connect

I told you it was coming, and now it is here. We were able to get most the weekday texts in, they do need some cleaning up. We have someone working to clean up all the texts over the weekend. We were able to get most prayer times, but we are still working on "Alos Hashachar" and "Tzais." We cannot get Mizrach (which way is east) working until the rumored iPhone 2.1 software comes out, which is expected very soon. So we will work on that also.

We got the barebones up, including:

(A) Texts - Prayers

  • Shacharis, Mincha, Maariv and Brachos
  • Both Ashkenaz and Sfarad

(B) Times - Zmanim
  • Location Lookup for long/lat
  • Sunrise
  • Latest Shema
  • Latest Tefilla
  • Chatoz
  • Mincha Gedola
  • Mincha Ketana
  • Plag HaMincha
  • Sunset

We tested all the times in our local area, so we hope it works well elsewhere. If it doesn't, I am sure we will hear about it. Here is the official iPhone Siddur page.

Very excited about this and can't wait to show you more. Here are some screen captures:

The McCippah - John McCain Branded Kippah from Vanity Kippot

The McCippahRemember the LED scrolling Kippah that I told you I ordered? Well, I never got it. :-(

In any event, a buddy of mine launched a new site named Vanity Kippah, which is currently selling the 2008 Presidential Kippah Collection. The example on the right is of the McCain Kippah, so if you are a McCain supporter, you might where that one around. Love Obama? Get the The Obamica, which reads, "My Bubby is Voting Obama" on the back of the Kippah.

Heck, they are even selling the The Hot Kippah. Personally, I would still love to get my LED scrolling Kippah, so I can scroll any message I want. World Peace, SEO Rules, "I &hearts Food," and so on.

Would Jews actually where these? I can see some. Would I? Not these, but if there was something really geeked out, I would strongly consider it. I know my wife would beat me if I did... :)

Booked Flight For PubCon, SES San Jose Mistake

Barry Blogging PubCon Vegas 2007Last night I booked the flight to PubCon in Vegas. Yes, way early, but the price via EWR to LAS on Continental wasn't bad - so I jumped at it. I made the mistake of not booking early enough for SES San Jose, and unfortunately, Tamar and I won't be going to that. So I was eager to get my flight booked for PubCon in November.

I am sure I will regret not going to SES San Jose... Just like when I bailed on PubCon last year, I totally regretted it. The last time I live blogged a PubCon was almost two-years ago. That PubCon was a lot of fun, since Yahoo invited me to Hugh Hefner's Vegas Suit in Palms Hotel and it was very all laid back.

So, in short, bailing on SES San Jose. Hitting SMX East and PubCon Vegas.

Not forget, SMX East is in October (right near Yom Kippur), good thing I am in NY.

Preview of the iPhone Siddur Application

Update: To be notified when the iPhone Siddur is available, please go here and fill out your email address in the box at the top right of the page.

Update: We submitted this to Apple for review, more details at this page.

As promised, I wanted to give you a preview of the iPhone Siddur application. I got it running on my phone, to test it. The icon was designed by our design and looks like this:

Preview of iPhone Siddur

We need to make the "S" capital.

When you load it up by clicking on the icon, it defaults to the actual prayers. You can select the sect (only two right now):

Preview of iPhone Siddur

Clicking deeper will then give you the actual options, morning, afternoon, evening, generic brachot, etc and then this is what an actual text looks like:

Preview of iPhone Siddur

Yes, you can expand it by using the touch expand feature and you can change to landscape view.

That is all pretty standard stuff. The cool stuff I demo later, but here is a hint:

Preview of iPhone Siddur

Siddur is what I showed above. Clicking on "Zmanim" will automatically figure out your location using the GPS tools. It will then figure out the various times you are allowed to say the specific prayers (earliest tallis, earliest teffila, mincha, etc.), automatically. And the "Mizrach" option is basically a compass, it will tell you which way is Jerusalem, so you know which way you should pray. That will come in handy when I go to conferences and I have no idea which way to stand.

I'll be showing off more previews soon, I hope.

Oh, I have a few more features in mind - that I won't be telling you just yet. But they will make this application a must have for all Jewish orthodox iPhone users.

Am I Losing The Connection?

Losing TouchI have been struggling on if I should write a blog post on the feeling I get that I am losing the deep connection I once had with the SEO industry. I know many of you might feel that even implying this, that you think I am crazy. But honestly, I use to know almost every little thing that was taking place in the industry that was public (and most non public) in nature.

As the industry grows, I have to take on more to be able to properly cover the growth of the industry. The more blogs I subscribe to, the more forum threads I need to read, the more stuff I need to write - leaves me with less time to "participate" in the industry I help document. Not participating as often as I like is sad. Heck, I don't even have the time to reply to most the comments left here or at the Search Engine Roundtable.

So why am I writing about this now and not a week or two ago? Well - Louis Gray wrote a blog post named Bloggers' Interactions With Readers Decrease With Prominence and showed this chart:

Blogging Stages of Interaction

I would not classify myself as an "industry legend," I am extremely well read in the industry, but the only "legend" in this industry would likely be Danny Sullivan.

But I honestly feel like I just don't have the time anymore to do be "in the communication," like I once was. I now feel more like I am "reporting on the communication," without always being a part of it. Well, I am a part of it, but not as much as I once was. In the past few weeks I have been trying to be more part of the communication and I will continue to do so.

Louis Gray documents what are "interactions:"

  • Allowing blog comments
  • Responding to blog comments
  • Commenting on FriendFeed about your blog
  • Tweeting links to your blog posts
  • Digging your blog
  • Stumbling your blog
  • Pimping your blog on others' blogs

Okay, I am not that bad where I do not allow comments - I do. But I am not always good with responding to them. I try so hard to comment at FriendFeed but I rarely do, I do have it set up to auto post to FriendFeed (but most people do that). I automatically Tweet my blog posts, and I do Tweet a few times a day outside of that. I only Digg my blog posts when they come up on my reader (yes, I subscribe to a site command on Digg). I never use Stumble, never. I rarely "pimp" my blog to individuals.

What I think I have learned from Louis's post is that I am currently a stage three blogger but I am just border line stage four. Louis says, "Two characteristics of Stage 3 bloggers also emerge: The sheer volume of readers makes keeping up with all of them impossible. A new kind of reader shows up, people who exhibit troll-like behavior."

Am I at that point, sometimes I do feel that way. "It's these two dynamics that cause some bloggers to head onto the next stage," explains Louis. But I do not want to head to the next stage - I do not want to lose my connection with the industry. I want to communicate, participate and be like it was three years ago. But is that even possible these days with the volume of bloggers, forums and social networking sites/apps out there?

Is it that there is too much? Or just different methods of participation then in the past? Or maybe it is both. Or maybe I am just crazy and I am participating more then most people and I should not worry about it.

We're an iPhone Developer But...

iphone-dev-logo.pngUpdate: To be notified when the iPhone Siddur is available, please go here and fill out your email address in the box at the top right of the page. We, RustyBrick, is now an iPhone developer, and the first thing we plan on releasing is a Siddur with a lot of cool features. A siddur is a Jewish prayer book. It is mostly built, but we have a few neat feature we want to add. I'll blog about that when it is live.

But we are having an issue. The computer that is running the code is bugging out when we try to connect the iPhone to it to load the app directly on the test iPhones. We get an error that reads, "XCRemoteIPhone isBigBear" - yea, descriptive.

Here is a picture:

XCRemoteIPhone isBigBear Apple iPhone Developer

We are not the only ones with this exact error, another developer posted this issue at Apple's Discussion Forums. I hope we get a response soon.

In the mean time, we keep developing. This Siddur is going to seriously rock.

Use Your iPhone As a Modem For Your Computer

One thing I miss is the ability to tether my phone's internet connection to my laptop and use that as a way to connect to the Internet. I was legally able to do with with my Treo, Verizon and my MacBook Pro, without having to spend an additional $60 (it cost about $10 extra a month legally).

The Apple iPhone does not have a way for you to tether your phone to your laptop to use it as an Internet connection. Since I got the Apple iPhone, over a year ago, I also tacked on a Verizon Broadband card for $60, so I can fire up the Internet on my laptop. If the iPhone and AT&T allowed you to tether for even $45 more per month, that would make sense for me.

But there is now a way to do it, at least, illegally. Cre.ations.net has posted the details and the process includes:

- Jailbreak your iPhone 3G
- Install 3Proxy and Terminal
- Create an ad-hoc Wi-fi network using your laptop
- Join the network with your iPhone
- Find the iPhone's IP address
- Open Terminal and run the proxy program
- Open Safari on your iPhone and open a web page
- Configure your browser to use the proxy

Visit Cre.ations.net for more information but beware - I am personally not going this route.

Waking Up Later? Strongly Considering It Now

CaliforniaSince starting at Search Engine Watch taking over for Gary Price to work as the News Editor with Danny Sullivan, I have been waking up pretty early to get all the blogging mostly done before the normal work day. This started about 2.5 years ago, and my typical day started with me getting up at 5:45 (now a bit earlier) and leaving the house by 6am.

This worked out well, since Danny was based in the UK. So he was up and about and he and I were compiling the news and stories very early in the AM. This pattern continued when we both left to start Search Engine Land But now that Danny has moved to the west coast, he now won't be around until much later.

RustyBrick is also more self-sufficient then it was a few years back. So I have less busy work with RB, and more creative work with it. So managing the blogging and "real work" during the day should be easier.

I am strongly considering waking up at 6am, and leaving the house by 6:20am. Then going to Jewish morning services at that time and ending up at work closer to 7am - as opposed to 6:30. In fact, I am hoping to then move that to a 7am wake up and 8am work start. I am not sure if I can stomach the "late" start - but I think I should give it a shot, at least the 20-30 minute delayed start.

Almost Ran Out of Space on My Apple MacBook Pro

Hard Drive Packing - ErrThis weekend, I kept on getting warnings that my disk was almost full. The warning said I should delete files that I don't use, because it can seriously impact my computer's speed.

So, first thing I did was break out my external video drive and set up a symbolic link in iMovie. So now, I will be 100% running my videos off this drive. In the past, I just moved the "iMovie Events" to the external drive, but now I set up the "iMovie Projects" to be on the external drive. For that, I had to set up a symbolic link from my local folder to the external folder - the iMovie Event thing was drag and drop, this required some UNIX knowledge.

So I freed up 3GB that way. I then remembered that I don't use parallels anymore. And I remember that file took up over 7GB, so I moved the "winhd" file to the video drive, just to archive it and Now I have ~11GB of space available.

I keep pushing off getting a new laptop, this one is just about two years old. But it runs very slow, especially with all the videos I do. I hear new MacBooks are coming soon, so we will see. I really don't want to upgrade just yet, so I need a big excuse.

Saying Goodbye to My Original IPhone

My iPhoneToday is the day that I say goodbye to my original iPhone. I am shipping it out to my brother, who lives in Israel.

I had my original iPhone 376 days. I had my new iPhone for only 10 days. In fact, I got my old iPhone on July 11th and my new one on July 11th - just realized that now.

In any event, I don't think Israel is a supported country for the iPhone. So what he does with it there, is up to him.

I know people in Israel have the iPhone and use many of its features. I do hope Israel begins to support the iPhone officially, soon. I hope I can get AT&T at a normal data rate when I travel there sometime in January 2009 - for SMX Israel. ;-)

Goodbye original iPhone. I am sending you to a better place now and I am sure you will be treated well. ;-)

Just Kidding, Again: This Time AT&T

Ugh, AT&T Told Us they would be giving us free Wifi to all iPhone users. Well, that was a mistake.

AT&T mistakenly announces free Wi-Fi for iPhone users...again from News.com reports that they made a mistake.

But Wes Warnock, an AT&T spokesman, told CNET News that the notice was published in error.

"We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone," he said in an e-mail. "The Web page was posted in error and is being removed."

Crazy thing, this is the second time they did this. And the second time I was fooled this week.

Free Wifi From AT&T For iPhone Users

iPhone Wifi FreeIt is about time! AT&T has thousands and thousands of wifi hotspots nationwide and they are finally opening up those networks for iPhone users, for free.

Free is relative. Yes, we pay AT&T for phone service, but I have been paying for a year without the free wifi. So now, we have free wifi, which should help if I am not in a 3G network and don't have my own wifi connection.

You can see AT&T's hotspots over here and this also includes all Starbucks locations.

Struck By Lightening - On Camera

This woman got struck by lightening while on camera. Watch it:

Now, she explained:

Because you insisted, here's the unedited screaming version. I also added video from a minute before the lightning struck so you can get an idea of how hard it was raining. From what i understand, it went through my left hand holding the camera, crossed my back and exited out of my right hand holding onto the metal railing. No entry or exit wounds, as i was not directly struck, i got just a really good zap from one of the "finger arcs" that happen when lightning hits.

Wow!

My Brother-in-Law Does Virtual & Get's Written Up in CIO

aj schreiberSee that guy on the right of these letters? That is my brother-in-law, my wife's sister's husband - AJ Schreiber.

He is the CEO of a company named Chorus, they provide clinical, practice management and financial software for health care providers. His company was written up in CIO magazine yesterday. The article is named, Everyone Works at Home at Chorus, Part One.

How a small software company is saving money, reducing employee stress and improving productivity and customer satisfaction by closing its offices and going virtual. The first of three parts.

Pretty impressive, a three-part series in CIO magazine about his company, on how he moved his company into a virtual office.

Anyway, I am impressed in a few ways.

(1) Many companies are "virtual" or semi-virtual, but he was savvy enough to get CIO write up his company's pursuit to becoming virtual. The deserves major kudos.

(2) This is not just one article, but seems to be a three-part series.

(3) There are signs on page three, that I might convert AJ not only into a Mac user, like I did in March, but possibly also an iPhone user (like Danny and even Gary Price switched yesterday). On Page three it says:

Most employees already had cell phones, but Chorus put together a policy and expense guidelines for all employees so that they could get BlackBerrys or Windows Mobile-compatible devices to use as a back up in the event their IP Communicator goes down. (Chorus also supports the new 3G iPhone.)

Congrats on the write up and success, but most importantly, the iPhone. ;-)

I Told You So, Danny! You Apple Fanboy

Danny is an Apple Fan BoyDanny Sullivan, I am disappointed, disturbed and a bit ashamed to hear you had a change of heart.

Time and time again, both on the radio and via personal and private communication, Danny told me he would not be getting an iPhone. Not until it gets a keyboard and/or you can tether.

Danny, the iPhone can not do either of those things yet, I hear via Twitter, you will be getting an iPhone. And I quote:

dannysullivan heaven help me, i think i want an iphone of my own now. 04:15 PM July 14, 2008 from twhirl
dannysullivan @sugarrae i know! but with 3G, the phone seriously makes sense. and crash nitro cart. and twitterific is awesome. and safari's cool. and and 04:18 PM July 14, 2008 from twhirl in reply to sugarrae
dannysullivan verizon kindly offered to cut my termination fee in 1/2 to port over to at&t so nothing stands between me and my iphone tomorrow. cept stock about 1 hour ago from web

But this is the same Danny who said he won't be getting this phone. Why do I care so much? I don't - I just want to rub it in, because I told him I would when he gets one.

Honestly, I thought it would take at least 3 months to convince him. But 4 days! Only 4 days!

I told Danny, and I quote:

when u move, ur so getting an iphone

In reply, Danny said:

nope

I then replied:

i give u 6 months from when u move

I was so wrong! 6 months! This is 4 days!

So Danny, you are now the ultimate fan boy...

This post is just a joke, meant to *rub it in* as an "I told you so. I am sure Danny will pay me back some day. In reality, I am very happy he is getting an iPhone. It should make my life a bit easier, in terms of the blogging we do together.

Did Optimum Cable Drop GamePlay HD Channel 786?

GamePlay HDIf I am ever watching TV when my wife isn't around, which really isn't all that often, I try to watch the GamePlay HD channel (or Family Guy).

GamePlay HD is basically a channel devoted to "gammers," video games. I enjoy watching it because many of the shows are either taking you through the story of a game, which I find fascinating in many cases, or competition play. I first discovered this channel when I was home sick...

This Sunday, I tried to watch the GamePlay channel, which is on channel 786 on Optimum Cable, but it said the show was unavailable. So I checked last night and it is still unavailable.

I am becoming a little concerned that Optimum took the same route as Dish network and killed off GamePlay as a channel. I certainly hope this is not the case...

I cannot find any news on an official or even rumored cancellation of this channel by Optimum or CableVision.

Update: I am getting reports that this channel works this morning, from people at home. I will test it out in the PM.

Dropped Parallels For Remote Desktop Connection to Dell PC

Apple Remote Desktop Connection ClientI have been using Parallels since August 2006 on my MacBook Pro but time has come for me to trash it. Over the course of the years, Parallels has slowed my computer down tremendously.

I recently switched to a real PC. I bought a cheap Dell computer for maybe a couple hundred dollars more than the Parallels software. I stuck the computer behind my desk, plugged it into the network and then I leave it on. I then use the Apple Remote Desktop Connection Client to connect to the Dell.

This is so much faster then running Parallels. I can connect at work or at home, via the VPN. I can print, copy and paste between Mac and PC and always email documents back and forth. Just as my Mac (which is still less than two years old) gets older, Parallels slows down and it takes forever to do the tasks I need it to do.

Goodbye Parallels. :(

Close It Quick: Stocks Bleeding Red

In any event, he was having problems opening his stock ticker system. So I came in and double clicked on the application and it opened. It opened up all red.

It was like a blood bath.

I asked him, should I close it for you now? :)

Ah, my humor - it just kills me sometimes. I guess you had to be there.

iPhone Can Now Take Screen Shots

One thing I always wanted for my iPhone, was the ability to take a screen shot of the application I am using. Why? Cause I do a lot of demos of search apps and social media apps and taking pictures with a camera is just not as good.

Now You Can! How? Hold down the home button and then press the power button at the top of the iPhone.

The iPhone will flash, like a camera, and place the image in the Photo's Camera Roll folder. Then you sync it to your computer or MobileMe or where-ever and you can include that screen shot anywhere.

Here is a video demo of it in action:

Here is a screen shot of this blog using this method:

Gyutae from Winning The Web informed me of a recent MacWorld article named Taking screen shots with iPhone 2.0 - that is where I got this from.

Slight change of plans... I am switching stores and going to a different one. About an hour ago, 8pm (EST), I drove by the store to see what is going on. There was only one person waiting and I know he has been waiting there since 5pm. So I plan on hitting this store at about 5ish in the morning.

Plurk, Give Me My Red Star!

I joined Plurk just about 3 weeks ago. Over the course of those three weeks, I invited over 50 friends to join, through this link and I have earned the "red" star.

Plurk says they reward special stars to users that get their friends to Plurk." You can earn up to three stars, gray for 10 invites, yellow for 25 invites and red for 50 invites (the max). So I finally got 50 invites, I see the red star on my profile, but only a few others do.

So why can't others see my star? It should look like this:

Plurk Red Star

I suspect it has to do with a bug in the system. Right now, only if you are on my timeline, can you see it. Otherwise, no - you cannot see it, at least now. So what is the point? I want people to see the star when they are on their own timelines (that is how it works, you don't spend your Plurk time on other people's timelines.

I want my red star. ;-)

I Plurked this over here and here.

3 Weeks Later, New WTR54GS Linksys Router

Replacement Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router3 weeks ago, I told you that My Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router Died. So I initiated a chat session with Linksys tech support, they gave me an RMA (return merchandise authorization) number, and I mailed back the broken router via UPS to Linksys.

Two weeks later, they got it and backordered the replacement. Two days after that, they shipped out the replacement. Today, three weeks later, I received the replacement router.

It actually seems brand new. It may be refurbished but it doesn't seem so. I set it up in a matter of minutes and it is ready to go, when I need it.

I keep it in my RustyBrick bag with me at all time. You never know when you need a wireless router or ethernet cable.

All in all, the return process was painless. Took a bit longer then I would like, but it was very easy.

Rules of Line Waiting? More Prep for iPhone 3G

So, I just got an email from Apple, confirming the rumors that the Apple stores will also start accepting orders for the iPhone 3G at 8am on July 11th.

Apple iPhone Sale 8am July 11

So, I am still up in the air on sleeping over at the mall or just going to the mall really early on Friday morning. I honestly do not want to sleep over, really. In any event, either way, I am expecting to wait in a line. And part of planning for iPhone day, is what to expect.

So I know that I will wait in a line, I also what to expect once I do get to a sales rep. Just go see apple.com/retail/iphone and you will see 8am, is when sales begin and credit card, social security number, valid government-issued photo ID and my current wireless account number and password.

But questions I have is what is the proper line waiting rules? If you need to use the bathroom, I assume your place is saved? What about getting a bite to eat? Does anyone know the rules for line waiting?

Invaded By Baby Spiders!!!

Baby SpidersAt about 8:20pm, my wife calls me on my cell to tell me we have tons of spiders in our bedroom. So, I leave what I am doing and drive right home. I find dozens and dozens of baby spiders crawling on the north-west corner of our bedroom ceiling. We start killing them one by one with a swiffer and tissues. But it is taking too long.

I then break out my bug spray and start spraying them. They seem to be dying on contact. So I continue my defense by spraying every small spider I see. To make sure, I spray one and then watch it die slowly. The spray is working, so I continue my onslaught. Spider down, spider down, spider down. I then get defensive and start spraying the area the spiders may have come from and where they may be going. I spray around the AC vents, the light fixtures, the air filter and motion detector. I spray the windows, frames, floors, under the bed, on the walls, every corner and so on.

I then decide to see if I can find a source of the issue. I decide to venture up into the main attic. I climb up with a flash light and bug killer spray. Half of the attic is well lit up from the single bulb. The area I need to go into and investigate is very dark. I manage to climb and balance my way into the area and I look around. Keep in mind, it is about 100 degrees up there. I can't find anything. In fact, it looks spotless up there. Everything seems incredibly clean and tidy. So I decide to spray where I would imagine the source came from, but I cannot verify if that was the source.

I come down from the attic 15 minutes later, dripping with sweat. I give my wife the report and then look around more. We kill a few more spiders, change our sheets (to be safe) and I then spray a bit more, as a pre-caution.

This is all after a really long day. It was kind fun to explore the attic at that level of detail. But next time, I hope to go into the attic during the cold winter months. :)

Parents Who Placed Baby Up For Auction on eBay Gets Their Kid Back

Baby For Sale on eBay

Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller.

That is how the ad read on eBay, after the 23-year-old mother and 24-year-old-father placed that listing. The parents live near, Unterallgäu, southwestern part of Bavaria, Germany. They posted the ad as a joke, and that joke got their new baby boy taken away from them.

Case dropped against parents who put baby on eBay from the AP reports $1.59 EURO sale price got them into big trouble over "possible child trafficking." But after the prosecutor dug deeper, he learned that this was really just a joke that went bad.

How long did this couple have their kid taken from them? "Several days" reports the AP who spoke with the parent's deputy chief of youth services.

How crazy!

Planning For iPhone Day

I am really working myself up about getting the iPhone on July 11th at 8am.

I called the mall to find out if they are open 24/7 and they are. So now I need to decide if I dare sleep in the mall or just get there extremely early.

The mall does have both an Apple Store and AT&T store. I prefer to go to the Apple store, cause that is part of the whole experience. So that will be my first choice. The Apple Store is F1 (labeled with the green bow), the AT&T store is H1. They are both on the same level, each about 5 minutes from each other.

Palisades Center Mall Floor Plan

I'll have my computer and wireless broadband card with me. So I will do my morning blogging from the mall. I will also provide cover the iPhone day event from the Palisades Center Mall.

I still have several decisions to make:

(1) Sleep over?
(2) If not sleeping over, what time to I get to the Apple Store?
(3) If Apple Store is a zoo, do I take the risk of trying the AT&T store and lose my spot at the Apple Store?
(4) If it is a long wait, do I pack food?
(5) Do I get the 8GB or 16GB version? White or black? (probably black).

Patrick's ScribeFire QuickAds Look Sweet

I cannot tell you how many people email me that are clueless on how Google Ad Manager works. Well, from now on, I am going to simple forward them to ScribeFire QuickAds. Any blogger, with almost any technical know how, should be able to get these ads going and start making money on their blog, almost immediately.

Here is Patrick's demo:

Running Over Ducks in a Row

Ducks in a RowThis morning, on the way to work, there was a flock of ducks in the middle of one of the side roads I drive on. There must have been 20 or so of these ducks.

As I drove up, some got a bit startled, but when they noticed that I slowed down, they decided to proceed. They weren't all crossing the road, they were traveling westward on the street. So after a few seconds, I decided to honk my horn.

That worked. It took several honks, but it got them off the street.

I don't think I have ever seen so many ducks, period. Them being on the street is also not all that normal.

If I was some type of crazy nut, maybe I would have run them over. Reminded me of a movie I saw on a serial killer. Then I got sad when I thought about that.

iPhone Goes on Sale at 8am, July 11th

AT&T released a press release stating that the iPhone will technically go on sale at 8am at AT&T stores.

AT&T Inc. today announced iPhone 3G pricing for new and existing AT&T customers, several attractive voice and data plans, and tips on how to be "iReady" when iPhone 3G goes on sale at AT&T retail stores at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, July 11.

Yea, that is 8am local time.

So I just emailed the guy I had a meeting with on July 11th to postpone. Hope he is cool with that.

As of right now, I will be a line waiter, waiting for the iPhone, on July 11th.

If you want to wait with me, please do let me know.

Update: Meeting officially postponed!

Vacuum Out Freon For Air Conditioner

Freon Vacuum PumpMy air conditioner sagas continue. I know many of you are sick of hearing about it, but I am documenting this stuff in my "web log" so I have it on record and I can reference back to it when I need to.

On Sunday, the upstairs A/C stopped cooling the upstairs level again. It reached 79.5 degrees in my bedroom that night, thankfully we have a ceiling fan (thanks Mom & Dad).

The AC guys came back Monday morning. He told me that the last time he came (a week before) the Freon levels were perfect. But today, the levels were out of whack. He said that he wants to totally vacuum out everything from the unit. All Freon, air, dust, moisture, and so on. Then he wants to reset or recharge the compressor (I guess by leveling the new Freon levels).

So he hooked up a machine that looks like the image above to the unit. He let it run pretty much all day. Then at the end of the day, he came back with a crew of people to "recharge" the air conditioning unit. By that time, it was 84 degrees in the upstairs level. At about 6pm, they finished and said it was working. It was one degree less, now at 83. 30 minutes later, down to about 80 degrees, then at about 7pm down to 78. By 9pm or so, it was down to the temperature I set it at, I think 73 degrees. The upstairs level was cooled!

Does it mean that it is was fixed? I hope so, but I am not too confident.

Here is the history:

- Sunday, June 8th, first A/C outage. We had to sleep on the sofa downstairs for a few days, until the guy was able to come and fix it, temporarily, on Wednesday the 11th.

- Thursday, June 12th, it broke again. The guy came back Friday, the 13th, to level the Freon again. It now was working again and lasted for a while.

- Sunday, June 22nd, it broke again. The guy came back the next day to fix it. He leveled the Freon levels again.

- Sunday, June 29th, it broke again. The guy came yesterday, June 30th. This time he said he will vacuum it out, as described above.

Will it last or will it break? I am not confident and I am concern. I would hate to have guests sleep over and it break. That is the worse case scenario.

In terms of money... This should not cost me anything. The units are brand new and are covered.

Too funny, I am just about finishing up this post and the AC guy called me to check in. He said, he wanted to check in and see if it is cooling. I said yes. He said, he doesn't think he will need to come back, but since they did the Freon thing during hot weather, it may need to be leveled again. He said, call him if it is needed. And he apologized again. Wow, that was nice to hear.

So I am not confident in it working for the long haul, but I am confident in the company coming back when/if it breaks.
