New iPhone Siddur Feature Preview

It has been a while since I shared some of the new features we have been working on for the iPhone Siddur. Again, you can see the full feature request list over here. We have not yet released a new version, we are hoping to fine tune this version to a solid 2.0 version. So here are some of the more visible things, besides for a lot of code cleaning and minor bug fixes.

(1) Gave the user the ability to specify their Candle Lighting (when Shabbat starts) times and Havdalah (when Shabbat ends) time. Go to settings and you'll see this:

iPhone Siddur - Zmanim Preferences

Tap your finger on the time to change the "default" to anything you hold.

My congregation does 45 minutes after sundown:

iPhone Siddur Now Havdalah

(2) You can also change the font style in preferences. Note, only two fonts work with nekudot, so here they are:

iPhone Siddur - Font Preference

(3) Finally, you can now see upcoming holidays on the Luach. How? Well, open the Luach:

iPhone Siddur - Shake It

Now, shake the iPhone or iPod Touch. Yea, give it a little shake and presto, it flips to this list view:

iPhone Siddur - Upcoming Events

Can't see all the info? Just rotate it horizontally and you can view more.

Those are some, not all, of the new features coming to iPhone Siddur 2.0.

Kosher Places to Eat in Boston

Rami's in BostonSo now that you know what activities we did in Boston, I wanted to share the places we ate. Boston was selected as the destination not only cause it is a fun place and it is not too far, but also because they have kosher places to eat.

The majority of kosher places in Boston is about a 5 to 10 minute drive from Boston Commons, in Brookline. I had my car, so driving there was a breeze. In fact, driving anywhere in Boston took no time (everything feels like it is within 10 minutes, where as in NY everything is an hour).

Before we went to the hotel, we stopped off at Rami's Felafel, which is on Harvard St, like the rest of the places but a little further up. It was really good food. I got a burger in a pita bread, it was tasty. My wife got a shawarma and she loved it. The best thing about the place is that the people working their took pride in their food. So, I recommend it, if your nearby.

That night, we decided to try out Taam China. I called before hand and they said they had no room. But we decided to see anyway. They had room, and they sat us down and we ate. Maybe I am spoiled living in New York, but the food was not all that great. Again, maybe I am just use to better chinese food or maybe it was a bad night there. We did have the chocolate cake, which was really good - I think because the other food wasn't all that good.

After that, we went to Kupel's Bakery, which is a block over, to get food for breakfast. The people in the bakery were very very nice. The food was good also.

The next day, we ate at the kosher pizza store named Cafe Eilat. The pizza was okay, the people were also nice. It was a pizza store, and I would recommend it. I think the pizza store was diagonal to Kupel's, if you need assistance in finding it.

That night we went to the deli, named Rubin's Kosher Deli, it is suppose to be a New York Deli and it kind of looked like an old fashion NY deli. The food was pretty good, I got a chicken thing that night. The only issue was that it was packed. But the food and service was not bad. We actually decided to go back there for breakfast the following day, before leaving, because they had a breakfast menu. It was pretty empty when we got there, but the breakfast food was also very good. We packed up deli sandwiches on ice for the ride home and those were also good.

So that was our Boston Kosher dining experience. Hopefully this will help someone looking for places to eat while in Boston.

Duck Boat Tours, Boston Commons, USS Constitution & More

So what else did we do on our trip to Boston? Well, I told you about the big CITGO sign, going to Cheers and walking up Bunker Hill Monument, but we did have time to do a few more things in our two day trip.

We jumped on Frog Pond Lily, to check out the Duck Boat Tours. The tour guides are interesting in a weird way. The guy we had, wore a rubber ducky around his waist, and had elmo arm floaters. There were others who were dressed a lot weirder, but they were all enjoyable to listen to. And yea, they made us quake.

Duck Boat Tours "Frog Pond Lily"

Speaking of ducks, we stayed right by Boston Commons and here is a duck from the park:

Boston Common Park

We also ventured to the USS Constitution, which was closed on Monday, but we were able to go into the museum there and play with the canons:

USS Constitution on a Monday (closed)

I don't have pictures of the science museum, but we did go there. We saw an IMAX showing of Sea Monsters, I love IMAX. :)

I think is all or most of what we did in Boston. We do actually plan on coming back for these short, two day (Sunday/Monday) vacations. We would like to do some whale watching (I hear they are interesting to look at) and check out Sam Adams (we go way back) and a few more things we did not have time to do this trip.

AT&T Expands iPhone Data Plans to Israel

Last year, I took my iPhone to Israel, but turned off all data services, while only using WiFi. I was bummed that a year ago, AT&T didn't support Israel for just the iPhone when traveling. Meaning, they didn't have a plan you can buy for when you travel to Israel, like they did for the BlackBerry.

A couple days ago, AT&T announced that they expanded the international data offerings for iPhone users to more countries. One of those countries includes Israel. Not only that, because of the manner the iPhone downloads stuff, they added more packages with higher download capacities.

You can see the new international packages at the AT&T site, they include:

  • $24.99/month: 20MB Data Global Add-On gives you 20MB of usage within over 65 countries
  • $59.99/month: 50MB Data Global Add-On gives you 50MB of usage within over 65 countries
  • $119.99/month: 100 MB Data Global Add-On1 gives you 100MB of usage within over 65 countries
  • $199.99/month: 200 MB Data Global Add-On1 gives you 200MB of usage within over 65 countries

The best part is, that you can only buy the plan for your stay, so before I leave, I activate it and then when I get home, I deactivate it and only pay for the time I was in Israel. I don't think this means I get voice, just a discounted data plan. I would probably opt for the highest plan:

200MB Data Global Add-On Overage rate is $.005/KB within the over 65 discounted countries. Rate outside these discounted countries is $.010/KB.2 Does not include data usage within the U.S. Qualified domestic plan required.

The AT&T Travel Guide wizard confirmed that the iPhone 3G is compatible with these new discounted roaming rates.

AT&T, iPhone & Israel

In any event, I seriously need to get planning SMX Israel. :)

Noah's Ark Ginormous Burger Challenge, a Scam?

Last night, I went back to one of my most favorite places to eat, Noah's Ark - with the family and a close friend. My brother-in-law was there and he was a bit peeved that he did not get what he won from Noah's Ark.

Several months ago, he told me he ate what is called the "Ginormous Burger." If you eat the whole burger, Noah's Ark promises to give you a T-Shirt and put you on their web site. Neither has happened!

I snapped a picture of the menu from the restaurant, to show you (at least) part of the claim:

Noah's Ark Ginormous Burger

So, today, I scanned their web site and found no mention of any winners or even the Ginormous Burger. So, I did a Google site search for "ginormous" and found nothing. Clearly something is wrong here. I doubt my brother-in-law lied to me about finishing that burger and even if he did, I am sure someone else was able to do it but yet, there is no mention of anyone stepping up to the challenge, on the Noah's Ark web site.

Now, I can understand that the web design company might not be around to update the site. But at least give the man his T-Shirt.

Noah, I still love the food. :)

Update: They finally crowned him, a month after this blog post.

I Went to Cheers & They Knew My Name

The hotel we stayed at was just two-minutes from the famous Cheers bar. Yea, the one from the popular TV show that was on the air for 11 seasons. So, the first day we arrived, we decided to check the original Cheers Beacon Hill out.

Here is me at the stairs down to Cheers:

Barry at Cheers

When we walked in, it looked nothing like the real cheers. But it was a bar, outfitted with tons of promotional stuff for the TV show. Three floors of bars and t-shirts, mugs, hats, etc.

I personally hate buying stuff at these places, cause I know I can buy the same thing, online, for half the price. But we bought things anyway. Hence, they knew my name from my credit card...

Really Huge CITGO Sign

Huge Citgo SignWhile driving in Boston this week, I noticed a huge CTIGO gas station sign.

Why am I telling you about this sign?

(1) It is really really really big.

(2) It may be bigger than the Amoco sign that I saw in St. Louis a couple years back.

So when I spotted it, I made my wife take a picture, so I can simply blog about it.

The sign does not look as big as the Amoco sign but it may be. The Amoco sign in St. Louis was not all that high. This CITGO sign was mounted on top of a building, but the Amoco sign was just on top of a gas station. So it is hard to visualize which was bigger.

Most Surprising Part of My Boston Trip? No Speeding Ticket

Speeding TicketThe most surprising part of the trip, which is over 200 miles one way, probably a total of 500 miles driven the whole trip, was that I did not get one ticket.

I did not get a speeding ticket, I did not get a parking ticket, I did not get a ticket for J-walking.

Before leaving, I warned my wife, that I would be lucky if I did not get at least one speeding ticket. The roads were wide open, mostly straight, conducive to going very fast, without noticing.

I did see several cars pulled over by police cars. I was, fortunately, not one of them. I did use a radar detector the whole way there and back, so that might have helped. I wasn't going 100mph, but I was not always going the exact speed limit.

I was lucky.

I Walked Up ~300 Stairs in Bunker Hill Monument

Barry At Top of Bunker HillI am back from vacation and there are a few things I would like to share with you about that vacation. Let me start with one of the trips we took that I will really never forget.

My wife and I went to check out the USS Constitution. It was closed Monday, so we scoped out the museum there and stuff. After that, we decided to take the five minute walk up to the Bunker Hill Monument. When we got there, we walked inside to see a sign that says, "warning..." something about 294 stairs to the top. My wife and I looked at each other and said, sure, why not.

We start the climb, up these narrow steps... First 50 stairs down, then 100, then 150, then 200. It is at 200, where we both started feeling it. By 250, I felt like I was going to explode, I was breathing extremely heavy, legs were a bit wobbly, my head was hurting and I was dripping sweat. We keep going, because the people we passed at about 150, were starting to catch up to us and these stairs are incredibly narrow. Plus, we were about 10 years younger then they were...

We finally made it to the top, to not really see much but a nice view. I was hoping for a vending machine or oxygen tank, but got only the view. The breeze was good, and it cooled us off. We took several minutes to catch our breath. Notice, the picture above, that is me, at the top, a few minutes after catching my breath.

Then we decided to go back down. I went first, because it is a bit scary going down. I was literally dripping sweat on the way down. I looked like a basketball player at the foul line, at the end of a long grueling game. Im surprised my wife didn't slip from it.

Our legs, the whole way down, were shaking. Once we got to the bottom, which felt a lot longer then going up, it was a relief. But walking around the rest of the day, was incredibly weird. It felt that my legs would give way at any moment. Just from walking, and especially walking down any stairs on that day.

In any event, this is proof I climbed Bunker Hill and I survived.

Improving Location Manager on iPhone Siddur

One of the biggest points of confusion in the iPhone Siddur was editing your location manually. Beforehand, we asked the user to provide their zip code and GMT offset, if they were based in the US. If not, they needed to provide their GMT offset and their longitude and latitude. Besides for this causing confusion over daylight savings time, no one really knew their longitude or latitude, let alone their altitude.

Hence, version 2.0 of the location discovery tool. To access this tool, you go to Zmanim, Click on the location at the top and it opens up this "edit" screen:

Location Finder in Siddur Better

You flip the auto-location feature to the off position and type in the new location. You can be very specific, like a whole address, or just a city name, it will try to find the best match:

Location Finder in Siddur Better

I am heading to Boston soon, so I plugged that in and clicked on "done".

It then uses your Internet connection, yes this is the only piece of the software that absolutely requires Internet, to get the data. It calls the Yahoo Maps API to get the longitude and latitude of your search. Then, we need to get your time zone and altitude, so we use the GeoNames WebService to get that data. In short, we make three quick API calls, to two different provides, to get this data into the application, for you.

Here are the results the APIs returned for Boston, MA:

Location Finder in Siddur Better

Then I clicked on "Save" and it took me back to Zmanim with the times for that location, plus it put "Boston, MA" at the top:

Location Finder in Siddur Better

At the same time, it updated the Settings section, to use this location. Clicking on "About" will show you the Zmanim data points:

Location Finder in Siddur Better

Pretty cool?! Yes, the times are accurate.

Not done, it also changes the Minyanim data to be based off this location.

Location Finder in Siddur Better

Of course, you an always change it back to any location easily.

That is version 2.0, location manager.

Comments and question also at Google Groups.

The Verzion FiOS Multi-Room DVR Does Not Work With HD Boxes

So, as you know, Verizon FiOS installed TV and phone in my home today, to compliment the Internet I had with them. When the tech came to install, the first thing he said was that I ordered the Multi-Room DVR, but I have all HD TVs. He said, the HD boxes do not work with the Multi-Room DVR and gave me a face, like - its stupid that they don't, but they don't, so don't ask me why.

Verizon FiOS DVR

At that point, I said, fine, install for me a single, normal HD DVR and give me a normal HD box for the other TV.

The sales rep knew this, but sold me the wrong one. I was convinced that it would be an HD option, heck - who has non-HD TVs anymore (kidding).

So after careful research today, the DVR page (which I linked to above), has this disclaimer in small, gray font (kind of like fake-non-hidden links):

Multi-room features are supported on the Multi-Room DVRs and Standard Definition Model 2500 Set Top Boxes

So, you order one Multi-Room DVR and then you need the Standard def boxes to go with it. The HD boxes will not work with the Multi-Room DVR. Confusing? Yes.

I think it will just be a matter of time until Verizon gets their hands on an HD box that works with the Multi-Room DVR feature, until then, I am where I was with Cable.

Hopefully this helps out someone else, who is looking into this option.

Get 50% Off Vonage Phone Service

vonage screwedSo Verizon installed today, all went pretty smoothly. So after the install, I had to call Cable Vision and Vonage to make sure my services would be disconnected.

I called Vonage, and after a really long time I got someone on the phone. That person took all my information down and then had to get a manager to process the disconnect.

When that person came on, they told me I would be charged a cancellation fee. It came out to just under $100. After arguing a bit, I said, fine - charge me.

So how can you save 50% on your Vonage? Easy. She offered me the same plan and service for $14.95, as opposed to the $29.95 I was paying.

So call Vonage, ask for disconnect, and then tell them, you scheduled Verizon or your cable company to install the triple play or whatever. They will argue with you and then give you a better price.

So call now and save $15 a month, this way I feel that my $100 disconnect wasn't completely wasted.

When I called CableVision, they didn't give me an issue or charge me a fee. They asked why? I told them, "I wanted to be fair and give the other guys a shot." The rep laughed and said okay.

When Did Blogging Become Respectable?

BloggingWhile I sit here waiting for Verizon to install triple play, I was thinking, when did blogging become respectable?

I mean, in the past, maybe when I first started, I was a bit embarrassed to say, I blog. I use to say, I write in a very specific niche, on a specific topic. But now, I proudly say, I blog about a niche topic.

I can't remember when I stopped saying, "I write," and began saying, "I blog." But it did happen at some point.

Blogging use to be consider child's play, a diary, a game. But now, blogs can be just as authoritative, or more, than an industry news site. That message has really been learned and understood over the course of the years and I am happy to have been part of that.

Of course, this blog, is just fun and games. :)

Version 1.8 of iPhone Siddur Submitted to Apple

We have tested and submitted version 1.8 of the iPhone Siddur. I have updated the version history to reflect the changes, but let me demonstrate them here, with pictures. First, let me explain that many of the features came via the discussion groups and emails we received, so keep sending them and we will add them to the list and try to knock them off as often as possible.

iPhone Siddur 1.8, what is new?

(1) Major updates to the Siddur for Edut Mizrach (Sephardic) version. We not only fixed a ton of mistakes, we also added a lot of Brachot. I am sure there are still issues, so keep them coming. We do hope to add Nusach Ari/Chabad, but we have no ETA for that yet.

(2) Altitude always worked with the Zmanim, if you had a GPS mode, but we never showed you the actual elevation, now we do, if you click on "About these times."

Zmanim with Elevation

Note, I tested this a lot, and often it comes up with zero. I think it is a limitation on the GPS device. It does work, but not all the time.

(3) Rotating the phone to landscape mode, no longer looses your place. So if you are at this point:

iPhone Siddur Version 1.8 - What's Coming

And now you want to rotate it, it will keep you at the same point:

iPhone Siddur Version 1.8 - What's Coming

(3) We added two more times to the Zmanim, the most popular version of Magen Avrohom. If you want more, for now, go to a web version. We may add more, but later on.

(4) Greatly improved the Minyan database, thanks to working hand in hand with GoDaven.com. So check this out:

(A) Ranks minyanim nearest to your location:

(B) Cleaned up the detail view, added functionality and added a lot more data. So, it looks nicer, loads faster, no web access is needed to view the data. The address hyperlinks to the iPhone Maps application, so you can get directions. Email and URL, if available, work respectively with a tap of the finger.

Scrolling down, you see the times of the various prayer services. Yes, I know it says "zman" but it is hard to dynamically replace those words with a real time, because the words are used differently by different shuls and locations.

Scrolling down, more times (it only shows you times that are available, to not waste scroll time). It also has the Nusach, the long/lat (clickable) and the source of the data, which is hyperlinked to Safari.

(5) Added more settings options:

"Smart Siddur" is default on, but only really works in Ashkenaz now. We will add it to other Nusachs for version 2.0. "Hebrew Systems" is a switch for those who installed a hebrew keyword on their phones, which reverses some of the texts.

Added an elevation override, more overrides, including the "Limit to Miles" for the Minyan database:

Other changes include:

  • Added Torah portions added to all Nusachs
  • Remember last location when you close Siddur (might have some bugs)
  • Changed hebrew date format in Luach
  • Add kidduah livana
  • And more minor things

Released this now and will continue to fix up things and hopefully release another version as soon as the end of the week. Obviously pending how quickly Apple approves this version.
