FiOS TV Remote DVR Now Available!

Last night, I turn on my TV and I see a message from Verizon. It said that I can now enjoy programming my DVR from my computer or a wireless device. I immediately stopped everything and read on. I followed the instructions and configured my Verizon account to control my DVRs.

In short, you control this at Verizon FiOS TV Central. After you register your account and activate the remote DVR option, you have access to the DVR (beta) features.

You can view shows that are scheduled to be recorded:

FiOS Remote DVR

You can see the shows that are recorded and even remove them:

FiOS Remote DVR

You can see how much space you have on your DVRs:

FiOS Remote DVR

You can browse or search TV listings and record them, by clicking on the show and clicking "Record."

FiOS TV Remote DVR

It then puts the show, in this case, "The Office," in my scheduled recordings:

FiOS TV Remote DVR

If I had a Verizon Wireless phone, specifically from LG, I would be able to do this on my phone:

FiOS Remote DVR

These are the currently supported phones:

FiOS Remote DVR

I am a happy campier with Verizon. Even though their customer service has been horrible, the features are rocking!

Note, this service only comes the Home Media DVR package, which just became available a week or two ago for me at my home. Yea, it wasn't available originally, and the December rumors turned out to be true or in this case, early.

Check out Verizon's Remote DVR features for more details. This is too cool. I know TiVOs have this feature, but this is part of the bundle for me.

I Live In The Safest Community in America

Being Safe in RamapoThe Rockland Journal News reports that the Town of Ramapo is the safest community in the United States for 2008-09, according to the FBI crime statistics. It is a bit ironic, being that my wife is from St. Louis, which was rated the most dangerous city in 2006. Now, St Louis is 4 places safer than the most dangerous city, scoring a 355.01, pretty sad.

Here is a PDF file of the 2008 City Crime Rate Rankings. Notice, Ramapo, yes, where I live, scored the best with a -89.18. New Orleans, unfortunately scored the worst with 441.40. You can read about the scoring methodology in this PDF document.

Ramapo is part of Rockland County, it is the southwest corner. Suffern, my office, is in Ramapo, bordering New Jersey.

Keep safe!

Loving MacBook's Multi-Touch Trackpad: Here is Why

I've been up and running on my new MacBook Pro for just under two weeks now. Let me tell you... I am loving the new multi-touch trackpad with the new gestures.

I use both a left click and right click feature. I am a huge user of the two finger scroll, it is incredibly useful and saves me a ton of time. I also use the three finger swipe for the back button on my browser. I am a huge web browser user and being able to scroll up and down the page and go back and forth, via the track pad, is a huge time saver. The zoom feature, to be honest, is annoying on the MacBook (useful on iPhone). I also rarely use the rotate feature.

Here is a video demonstrating how it works:

Excused From Jury Duty for ~6 Years - Yipee!

Rockland County Jury SummonsI was dreading having to serve Jury Duty, dreading it. Why? Well, I was actually interested in learning from the experience, but it would have meant me getting to my office at 4am every day, leaving for Jury duty at 8:30am, then coming back to the office at 5pm and staying until 10pm - for the whole week.

So when I rescheduled my Jury duty, I picked the week of Thanksgiving. Why, well as I assumed then, it "should be somewhat slow." Well, I got lucky and I did not have to serve.

I checked the court web page every day after 5:30pm to see if I had to come. Each day it said, no new jurors needed, please check back tomorrow to see if I need to come the next day. So I checked Friday at 5:30, Monday at 5:30 and last night at 5:30. Each night said the same thing, except last night.

Last night said I am off and off for the next 6 years or so.

Jury call for Wednesday - Friday, November 26-28, 2008. Those jurors who kept their commitment by calling every evening or checking this web site, but were never requested to appear, please mail your summons Part A to: Rockland Jury Department, 1 South Main Street, Suite #250, New City, NY 10956, within 1 week and write on the summons, “NOT NEEDED”, and we will consider it good service. If it is not received within 1 week, you will get another date randomly assigned to you. You will also be excused from serving in Justice Court for 6 years and Federal Court for at least 4 years. If in the future, you get a summons from another court and you require proof, just call us and we’ll be happy to mail it to you.

We've enjoyed working with you and on behalf of the staff, County of Rockland & State of New York, we thank you.

I enjoyed working with you as well!

I mailed out the details as specified and I should be set for a while now, at least I hope.

Glad it worked out, cause I had a client who really wanted me to ditch Jury Duty to meet. :)

Hebrew Keyboard for iPhone Mail Client

One of the top requests is to build a Hebrew keyboard. The Hebrew keyboard is not officially supported by Apple yet, so we built one based on an image. Why is this important?

Now, people can type, email and search in Hebrew. Well, kind of at least.

Our first app that supports the hebrew keyboard is a simple app that basically allows you to type an email subject and an email body, in Hebrew, and then sends that data to the native Apple email client.

Here is how it works:

Hebrew Email iPhone App

Gray bar is where you enter in the subject and the white area is the body of the email. There is no spell check or auto complete. :)

When you are ready, you hit "Send to Mail" and it puts that content directly in the Mail application on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Hebrew Email iPhone App

If you want to add English or numbers to the email, here is where you do it.

There are Hebrew keyboards for the iPhone but only through Jailbreaking your iPhone.

Now, if Apple approves this, then this should be the first Hebrew keyboard approved for the iPhone. In addition, it gives us tons of possibilities for other apps. Such as a way to search tanach, and other jewish texts. It also gives us the ability to create more interactive Jewish and Hebrew apps.

Very excited to get this live. We posted this tonight to Apple for 99 cents. Again, this app is more of a test to see if Apple will approve it and if so, we can take it from there.

United Water Company To Cut Off My Water?!

Water CompanyLast night I have a voicemail on my home phone from the water company, United Water.

They said I have not paid my water bill and will be shutting off my water. It is kind of funny, over the weekend, I told my wife that I find it interesting that we never received a water bill since moving in. I then forgot about it and did not call them to find out what is going on.

This morning I called and told them, I received a phone call that I did not pay my bill. They asked from my address and city. I gave it to them and the woman said, your city is not X it is either A, B or C. I said no, it is X. So she finally found my city under A and I said, that is why I never got a bill, I live in X not A. Following me? ;-)

She then asked me, "Did you ever call the post office about this?" I said about what? She replied, "well, they never sent us the bill back, we never got it sent back to us." I replied, how am I supposed to know to call the post office for something I never saw? I cannot explain why they didn't mail you the bill back - you may want to call them about that.

In any event, after a stupid argument, I said - forget the post office. How do I pay up my bill now and how can I make sure you change my city from A to X? She then took my credit card down, I am sure I paid crazy late fees and service charges. And then she promised she changed my city.

A straight forward call did not have to be so aggravating. I mean, how do I control what the US post office does or does not do?

Thinking About Stopping Daily Recaps & Link Finds

cartoonbarry_speakicon2.gif

This is not the first time I thought about discontinuing the Daily Recaps and Link Finds.

In any event, I am really not sure how useful they are. Can you please comment below, with or without your name, and let me know why I should or should not continue with them. If you don't care, don't comment.

Misc Update

Figured I do a single blog post to tell you what is on my mind today, maybe I'll expand them out in the future.

For the past few months, since the financial bubble, I have been listening to Bloomberg Radio. Very depressing, to say the least.

In any event, first I hear Citigroup is laying off 50,000 workers. I think to myself, this is not going to be a good day. The market then skids the 8200 levels after it opens.

Then I see the SEC is charging Blogger and Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban with insider trading related to sales of Mamma.com.

Some correction in the markets, I think. But sad news, why why why....

Then I read that the top executives at Goldman do something right, they say, no bonuses for us in 2008.

More correction in the markets.

Now, the markets are rising a bit, now only down about 50 points for the day.

During this time, I spend an hour on the phone with Verizon about them not really signing me up for the FiOS triple play. So I am being billed $80 too much every month. This is the fourth time I called them about this. Each time, they said they got me on the plan this time and they have not. So I sign up again. This time, I am in a one year plan, for $94 per month. Let's see if they give me the plan and the credits I am suppose to get.

The good news, is they tell me I can now upgrade to the multi-room DVR option, since originally they did not support HD TVs. So I am hoping this actually works when I get home. It should be activated remotely.

Oh, got my new MacBook Pro up and running Saturday night. I used migration assistant, that took about 3 hours to run and when the computer popped on, it worked like my old, just faster. A few things did not transfer over, such as my printers and VPN info, but so far, no hiccups yet...

I think that is about it for today at 1ish.

My New MacBook Pro

I finally got it! My MacBook Pro arrived at my office yesterday. Today, I am back from Vegas, so I was able to unbox it. Yes, I have been waiting for it since April and finally ordered it in mid October and only received it now, about a month later. Why did it take so long? Well, it was a custom order. Here is a slide show of the first part of unboxing.

I am now backing up my old machine on Time Machine and will try the Migration Assistant from a Time Machine backup, if that works.

It looks so sweet!

The biggest difference is the boxes. The big black box is from my MacBook Pro from 3 editions ago (so I have a new one, then the one I am migrating off of now, and I had one before this one): Look at the difference:

Kickin Butt At Search Spam Card Game

Barry Schwartz: SEOmoz CardLast night, I finally played the game known as werewolves or in our industry, the Search Spam Card Game. The fun part is that, I am a card so I was hoping to secure my own card.

It was the first time I played the game, so I decided to play two rounds. The first round, I had a feeling Matt Cutts was a black hat (werewolf), so I voted for him. Matt conned the rest of the table to turn on me and vote me out. Long story short, Matt was a black hat, I was white hat and they voted me out and the black hats took over.

The next round was pay back time. I had the fun of being a black hat. I played the game right, convinced the table that two white hats were actually black hats, plotting against the white hats, and we voted those two out. Then the rest of the game was easy, once Matt was out - cause he is good and very convincing. So we took care of Matt right away.

It is a fun game, thanks SEOMoz.

Honestly, it is really fun being a black hat - maybe I should change teams and have SEOMoz change my card?

Pointless Apps?We have built several iPhone apps over the course of a few months. Some are more useful than others. But to call one of my apps "pointless" or "shameful" to the iPhone, well - that just crosses the line.

TechRadar's 16 totally pointless apps that shame the iPhone, which is on the front page of Digg now, claims that my parking meter app is pointless.

I'll quote you:

11. Parking Meter

If you really can't remember where you parked or when the meter runs out, you've probably forgotten how to drive too. Get off the road!

This guy clearly does not drive or own a car in a city with more than 100 people. I live in NY, when you park your car at a mall or any large parking lot, they label the parking spots in color, numbers and letters for this purpose. How many times have you received a ticket cause you were in a meeting, lost track of time and forgot to fill the meter in time? How many times have you had to walk around a parking lot longer than you wanted to, because you forgot exactly where you parked. Heck, there is even a Seinfeld about this!

Several comments at Digg back my app already. But comeon people, back me up.

This Gary Marshall guy must wake up! NYC makes a ton of money on expired meters, its a business and to say that people who have let the meter expire have "forgotten how to drive too" and "should get off the road," is plain dumb.

Charging Stations at Airports

I always wondered why there weren't more plugs and outlets by airport terminals? I guess it was to leave room for sponsors to pick that up. Yesterday, I was at Newark, terminal C112, and I saw one of these Samsung Charing Stations:

Charging Station

It seems to have been installed at Newark in late August:

Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) today announced the installation of 50 charging stations at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The charging stations have been installed throughout Terminals A, B and C.

I think it is a great branding move. You see banner ads all over airports, but for people with dead cell phones, this is a memorable piece, at least for now.

These charging stations are at other airports also including 54 stations at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), 51 stations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), 12 stations at LaGuardia Airport (LGA), 18 stations at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and 22 stations at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), along with eight Samsung Mobile Travel Centers at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and others.

Kristallnacht's 70th Anniversary At Rockland County Court House

Last night, I attended, with my brother-in-law and two older nephews, a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht. It took place in New City, outside the front steps at the Rockland County Court House. Here is a picture:

Kristallnacht - Rockland County Courthouse in New City

Kristallnacht (wiki definition) took place November 9–10, 1938 in Berlin, Germany. This night, 92 Jews were murdered and 25,000–30,000 were arrested and deported to concentration camps. 200 synagogues were destroyed, as were thousands of Jewish businesses and homes. It was really the start of moving from political, economic and psychological discrimination to actual physical discrimination and abuse, which was all part of the Holocaust. As Wikipedia says, it "marked the beginning of the systematic eradication of a people," and "served as a prelude to the Holocaust that was to follow."

At this commemoration, Henry Schindler, now 82, spoke to the crowd of people. As the Journal News reports:

At one point, Schindler said, a crowd ransacked a local synagogue and made a bonfire of its prayer books. A man trying to save a Torah scroll during the incident was beaten, then his beard and sidelocks were cut off by some Hilter Youths.

"And that I think was something that I still remember today," Schindler told the group, which held candles during the chilly night.

Kristallnacht also proved a precursor for what would happen to Schindler himself. Two years later, he was required to start wearing a yellow star with the word "Jude" on it. Four years from that first night, he would be sent to a concentration camp.

In any event, it was a memorable evening. I was able to take a picture of my Rabbi, Rabbi Josh Blass, of my synagogue speaking at the event. The picture above, shows a portion of the crowd in attendance.

Yippee! Tethering Coming to iPhone "Soon"

iphone to tetherGot back from a meeting recently and got pretty excited to see the news on Techmeme that AT&T is working with Apple to bring a tethering option to the iPhone.

What that means is that you will be able to use your iPhone as a wireless modem for your computer to connect to the Internet (over 3G where available). I had this with my Treo, where Verizon Wireless charged me $5 more per month to add the "tethering" package. But now, with the iPhone and AT&T, I was unable to do this (at least legally). So I had to buy a wireless broadband card from Verizon Wireless to make sure I have Internet access on my laptop everywhere I go.

I will "soon" be able to drop the Verizon Wireless service ($60 per month) and just add on a tether option to my AT&T iPhone plan. Can't wait!

Home Air Filters: Which Ones to Choose?

This Sunday I decided to replace all the air filters throughout the house. The A/C guys told me to do it monthly or when you can no longer see the "blue" in the color. So I waited a few months and changed them this weekend. I have a new house, and the A/C is pretty new also, they put in about 4 of these air filters throughout the house.

So I went to the local hardware shop, same place I bought the foam sealant and told the guy there, I need air filters. I told him, I had the blue ones and asked him why are there so many different types. He said, funny I ask, cause he was watching one of those "do it yourself" shows on TV and the guy said, if you can see through the filter, then don't buy it. The blue ones, you can see through. Here is a very nice picture of what a clean blue filter looks like:

Air Filters

If you hold it facing you, typically you can see through it. Most of the filters I replaced, 3 of 4, were fairly clean. The one in my bedroom was completely dusty and filled with stuff.

I purchased something more like these:

Air Filters

They are white, pleated and you can't really see through them.

In order to write this up, I decided to check out EPA's Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home. The guide basically recommends anything above "MERV" 7 or so. I know the ones I ordered online for my bedroom are MERV 7. My bedroom is a weird size and non of the local stores had the size in. EPA said, "filters with a MERV between 7 and 13 are likely to be nearly as effective as true HEPA filters."

So, I guess, MERV 7 or up is the way to go. Depending on which one you get, it says how often you should change them. Most people let the filters go through the summer and change them annually. I think that is what I will be doing.

Introducing: The iPhone Little Black Book

I am very excited to announce that today, we posted the first release of the iPhone Little Black Book. The name says it all. It basically is an application to securely keep track of your dates. It is a database application that hooks up the contacts to the places you took them and also to gives you details about each date. So if you went out with Jill 3 times, you can add where you took Jill and write about each of those three dates. As you build up your database, you can rate the contacts, the venues and the dates themselves. The beauty is that you can search this for later and quickly find a hot date or great place to take a date, at any time.

Let me take you through some of the screens of the iPhone Little Black Book:

Cover screen, pretty no?:

iPhone Little Black Book

Individual contact screen has the ability to take a new picture or use a picture from your photos. You can copy a contact from your contacts or add a new one. You can rate the person, tag the person and add notes, plus more. As you can see, the contact has a link the "dates" you went on with this person and "places" you took this person. Clicking on those buttons will filter the results by this contact for the places or dates.

iPhone Little Black Book Screens

Venue detail screen: As you can see, this is a record for a venue. You can enter in the venue's location, pictures, web site, rate it, tag it, and so on. Here is a screen shot:

Dates in List View: Here is a screen capture showing the dates you went on in chronological order and by favorites order:

Fill In Holes With Foam Sealant

When the guys installed FiOS in my house, they left these quarter size holes in the outside of my house. I didn't want to allow bugs or water in to the home, so I bought foam sealant.

I picked up a bottle of DAPtex Latex Multi-Purpose Insulating Foam Sealant from a local (small) hardware store. I actually felt bad, so I decided to not go to Home Depot and went small.

When I got home, I had some fun and filled up two small holes with this sealant. Here is a video from a guy on how it works:

Too much fun! Sad, huh?

Wish: Organize Your iPhone's Home Screen Via iTunes

iPhone Home ScreenI let my home screens, all 8 or so of them, get messy. I am way too lazy to move my iPhone icons around until they are perfect. The way you do it on the iPhone is good for one or two changes, but not for mass app movement.

So, a feature request for Apple would be to be able to organize your iPhone apps on your desktop. Probably part of iTunes or something.

You load up iTunes, click on your iPhone, then click on "Organize" or something like that. Then you are shown all your home screens on one screen. You can then move each app from one location to a different location, all via your mouse.

That would seriously speed things up for me.

I doubt it is on the top of Apple's todo list and I honestly should submit it as a request, but maybe if others agree, we can all submit this as a request to apple.

Connections? Why Can't I Get More Buzz For Stuff?

BuzzThis morning, a friend of mine, pointed me in the direction of a New York Post article named FAITH GOES WIRELESS. The article praises (no pun intended), a product called JewBerry. It is basically a Jewish prayer book for the BlackBerry.

Why am I a little upset with the NY Post article? Well, to be honest, the iPhone Siddur uses technology that JewBerry hopes to use in the future, according to the article. The iPhone Siddur already uses GPS and localization features to locate the nearest minyan, it already uses GPS to figure out the times to pray (including into that, altitude), it had all the features and more. In fact, we might even add in the feature to find a minyan now (although most people don't request it, it was an idea I had on day one).

So why did JewBerry get the feature and not the iPhone Siddur? Don't get me wrong. Jonathan Bennett, the creator of JewBerry is an awesome guy. In fact, we shared with him our minyan technology, and he hooked us up with some Chabad nusach text. He is a really nice guy and deserve it.

My only question is, how do I get major publications to cover the iPhone Siddur? Almost all of the buzz already created around the iPhone Siddur is either Jewish paper related or blogs. How do I get it into a major publication?
