Pictures From My Talk At Jerusalem Web Professionals

As some of you know, I spoke at a small event in Jerusalem. It is a bit funny, cause I saw a few familiar faces - I would mention some names, but I don't want to call anyone out and forget some people. But I do want to mention one person. I get an email from RustyBrick's first real employee - Hillel Coren. He tells me he is in Israel now and he saw I was speaking at these events, that he happens to go to. So he asked to meet up 30 minutes before. So we did. It was nice catching up with him - he worked for us for a long time, before moving to Manhattan and finding a new job. But he was a big part of what RB is today, so it was great seeing him.

Outside of Hillel and the people I met, I got some very interesting questions. Want to thank Charlie for organizing the event and Presentense for hosting it. I was able to wing the quiz they gave me on SEO :) and it was a lot of fun. Just never really talked that long, about two hours straight. So I had a thing of ice cream when I got back to the hotel - best ice cream I ever had. In any event, here are pictures of the event from Facebook.

Meeting Israel's Best SEOs Gilad, Branko & Many Others

I had the opportunity to meet many SEOs while in Israel this trip. I met with RankAbove, I met with 30+ folks at the Jerusalem Web Professionals group and today I met with some of my favorite Israeli SEOs, Gilad Sasson and Branko Rihtman (aka neyne / SEO Scientist).

Gilad, Branko & Barry in Jerusalem

Gilad came all the way from Tel Aviv, which is a long way relative to Israel. Branko came from the other side of Jerusalem to meet with me. Roi, who runs Tens Technology and who Branko works for, couldn't make the lunch meeting - cause he just had a new kid. And Mayer from RankAbove I also missed due to having a kid. Mazol Tov Roi and Mayer!

Big thank you to my wife who has put up with me on this trip. She came with me to some of these meetings and almost passed out from boredom several times. Thank you wife!

Touring Yad Eliezer - Wonderful Charity in Israel

Yad Eliezer LogoA month or so ago, we signed a deal (well, there were no signatures), to re-create the image and coding of Yad Eliezer's web site. I had the privilege with meeting with the family who runs the American operations and initiatives in my New York office. They described all the things they do for Israel, including and I am sure I am missing things... Thousand and thousands of food baskets for the hungry and for soldiers, weddings, big brother and sister programs, dental programs, baby formula, bar mitzvah programs and so much more. You can learn a bit about their programs over here (keep in mind, the site will change in the next few months, after we finish it).

The people who manage the American side of things really made an impression on me. It is a father, son and mother operation. The family is well off financially and they do not take a penny for the work they do for the organization. The father and son devote a huge amount of their time and money for the organization, but the mothers spends her days and nights (full time and overtime) working for the organization. She is up often at 3am (and I thought I got up early) and works late into the night.

I have seen many organizations and this organization just seemed different to me. They are by far the largest of its kind in Israel. They are most well known for their food programs, but because of their outreach in food, it extends to other programs, that have a nice natural fit.

As you can see, I am leaving out names - just in case. So the mother asked me if I would like to see how the operation works in Israel. So we coordinated a meet up at the Yad Eliezer Israel office, where I meet a bunch of people from the team. They were extremely delighted and excited to get their new web site. But besides for that, they took my wife and myself on a tour of the operations.

They first showed us a video they just released, showing how they sent 8,000 care packages to the Israeli soldiers during the Gaza war. They were able to get tons and tons of donations and tons and tons of volunteers in no time, to put together this huge operation. It was truly special and made a huge difference in the moral of these soldiers.

After the video and him showing us the dental clinic they run up north for families that cannot afford basic dental care, he took us for the tour. I believe we first visited the packaging facility, where in 2008, they packed about 8,000 packages each month for families in need of food and babies in need of baby formula. I even met a kid I know from where I live, who is donating his time while spending a year learning in Israel. Small world. It seemed like there were about 20 people there working, and I was told only one was on payroll.

Here is a picture of a portion of the packaging area, where the volunteers took 10 minutes out to watch that new video I mentioned above. I hope they post the video to YouTube, so I can share it with you all, but here is one picture:

Yad Eliezer Packing Plant

Then he took us to the caterer, who prepares the food for the weddings they run at cost (and often cover 100%) for poor families. Weddings are a huge deal for Jewish families, huge - so they want offer a Adopt a Jewish Wedding program, so that even poor families can have a nice wedding. So we first went to the caterer who makes a total profit of several US dollars per event (not per plate). They have at least two weddings each night (two each night!) and often more. They were prepping chickens, soup, kugel, and a lot more. Everything was very clean and very impressive looking.

We then went to the two new wedding halls Yad Eliezer owns. They were extremely nice, as nice as most normal weddings in the US. They own two halls and they are constantly used, every night for a weddings. They also are able to get other halls at very reduced costs when they have more than two weddings taking place in a single night. Again, I was very shocked to see such care.

He only showed us a portion of what they do. But the small portion I saw in the couple hours I spent with them was unbelievable. What is even more unbelievable is that most of this is all done for free through their huge volunteer base. I am often skeptical about charities, that is why it is always nice to see an organization that is fully dedicated to what they do, from their hearts and not from their wallets.

Again, I feel privileged to be able to do their web site and even more privileged to have witnessed first hand, just a small portion of what they do, to better the world.

Beware: I've Got a Twitter Impersonator

Twitter ImpersonatorGuys, a couple of hours ago, some guy or gal registered the the id "rustybrick_" at Twitter. He/She then began going around to those who follow me and following them. In return, this rustybrick_ now has 36 followers, thinking they are following me and they are not. Then this person posts a single twit, about some service he/she is selling.

Please do not be fooled by this impersonator. My Twitter id does not end with an underscore, it is http://twitter.com/rustybrick with no underscore at the end.

This is not the first time I am dealing with an impersonator. I had someone acquire the Gmail address web.rustybrick@gmail.com and try to sell SEO services under my company name. It was a kid from India who just messed up and he gave it up, but this seems more serious.

Seems like I am not the first to be impersonated on Twitter. Is there any way to fix this and kill this fake account?

Pictures of Google's Tel Aviv Office

I'll do a larger write up on the Google Tel Aviv office later, but I wanted to share pictures of the office with everyone. I was actually surprised by how "Googlish" the office was in Tel Aviv. Here is a slideshow:

It Is a Place to Dispose of Bombs (בור בטחון)

Yesterday, I asked you to guess what this is a picture of and Charlie Kalech got it right. It is what is called a בור בטחון which means a place to dispose of bombs. Here is a picture, again:

At Kever Rachel

This one sits about 10 feet from the grave site of Rachel, more on that over here. In short, it is a very holy site. If you find a bomb, you put it in this box and it should take care of most home made bombs. I was shocked to learn what it was. I personally thought it was a charity box, but I couldn't find a slot to put money in. So when I asked, I was told it was a place to put a bomb, if you find one. Being American, it just felt to weird to see one of these things. I was then told, they are all over Israel and even at the Kotel (western wall). When I went to the Kotel yesterday, I noticed one, you can see it for yourself in this picture in the center and the far bottom, at the end of the fence, right behind the middle man in the black coat.

Who would think you would need such a box? But when you see the security needed to protect such sites, I guess I should not be shocked. Rachel's Tomb is surrounded by a fortress to protect it, and those that come to pray there. I took a picture of one of the many look out towers, which encompasses the whole site:

At Kever Rachel

Again, I was in disbelief when I saw all of this. This is normal life here. I cannot fathom it.

Guess What This Is...

Here is a picture at one of the holy sites I visited. Now, I had no idea what it was until I was told. Let me give you context. It is positioned indoors, about 10 feet from a holy grave site. Take a guess and comment on what you think it is...

At Kever Rachel

I'll come on later (via a new post) to let you know.

Okay, contest is over: Answer is... It Is a Place to Dispose of Bombs (בור בטחון) read more...

3G on iPhone in Israel Not Too Bad

I am in Israel now and I have had time to really test out my iPhone using local ISP speeds but why not post the speed results I get on my iPhone in Israel.

Here is a speed test result set from the Speed Test app for the iPhone:

3G Speed in Israel

The first 3G result set is the 3G speeds I am getting in Israel. Max 471 down and 181 up. The WiFi result, directly under that is my brother's wifi connection, which is slower than the 3G at a max of 440 (average of 138) down and 53 up. You can see, I ran it twice and the speed is more like 140 down, which is much less than the 3G network here. The next 3G result is from New York area, which is about the same as in Israel.

Speed Test

Here is a later subset of results that shows speeds much higher. In some locations in the US, the 3G network got as fast as 1120 down. But my FiOS connection is super fast showing 5764 down and 3049 up, which is slower then my previous report of 12664 down and 3149 up.

Dreaded 10+ Hour Flight Without Internet

Israel 2008The picture here is me, getting my last Internet puff before taking off, on a past flight.

Being without Internet on a flight longer than an hour drives me nuts. I am the type of guy who would pay a hundred bucks, easily, for Internet on flights over two hours. For my flight that is coming up now, it is over 10 hours to Israel and 12+ hours on the way back.

I don't think my flight offers inflight Internet, in fact - I am 99.999% confident they do not. So, minutes before take off, I will be franticly using my iPhone, getting every last minute of US internet I can get, before take off.

Then, when I land, the first thing I do, is turn on my iPhone and start downloading the hundreds of emails. I am not looking forward to that process, after a ten hour flight on a business day. But you do what you can do.

I do hope that the in seat power works to keep my devices charged fully. I do plan on watching a movie on my computer or iPhone, so we will see.

Here is to safe travels!

Got My International Data Plan for iPhone

I just signed up for the Data Global Add-Ons for Smartphones, PDAs and iPhone from AT&T for my iPhone. Yes, I was very excited to learn that this was expanded to Israel recently. Today, I ordered the most expensive option, because I need to assume I will use what I use here in the states, on a high day for my trip to Israel.

Normally, I am on WiFi networks here. But on Sunday's I notice my usage on the data network spikes. So I picked the highest usage, which is about 6MB and went based on that. I signed up today, which gives me 80MB of usage until I get back to the states. Here is a picture of my data usage bar in my account for this international plan:

AT&T International Data Plan

I will use the data plan probably 10 days, maybe less. Also, 4 of those days, I will be around wifi networks, most of the day. So I should have plenty of data to not go over the plan. If I do, I get hit with a fee of $.005/KB - which can get bad, quickly with the iPhone.

Now my only concern is battery life...

Booking Flights Just Like Gambling

airline ticket counterBooking flights, to me, has always been like gambling. I watch the ticket prices for my search criteria for a few weeks, I use tools like Farecast to help, but ultimately, when I hit that "buy now" button, I feel like it is a gamble.

I often try not to look at the price of the flight after booking it. But Saturday night, I decided to take a sneak peak at the current price for my trip to Israel. I was shocked to learn that I paid almost twice as much.

Flights from New York to Israel typically run over $1,000 - typically $1,200 or so. When I looked Saturday night, the price was around $650 before taxes. I was shocked.

After I got over the initial feeling of being cheated, cause I know this is how airline prices work. I decided to then call and see what can be done. They offered that I can do a ticket change, for $250 per ticket, and then get a voucher back for flying next time, for the difference. So in short, I did it, and it cost me about $500 (two tickets) to get some money back.

At the end, I will come out $350 or so ahead. But I still feel cheated - although I know I should not feel this way. You rarely ever see tickets to Israel from New York this cheap. So if you want to fly this week, check out Continental Airlines.

Going to Israel For Quasi-Vacation/Work

vacationThis week, I go to Israel for about a week or so. So you might see less activity on this blog for the next week.

It is about a year since I was in Israel, that was for my Nephew's Bar Mitzvah and for SphinnCon Israel, amongst other things.

This time, I hope to do some planning for an SMX Israel event later on this year. I also hope to meet a few clients, SEO companies (not many) and visit the Google Tel Aviv office, if time allows. I do plan on spending at least two shabboses in Beitar with my older brother, sister-in-law and nieces. Last years trip was very nice, we did a lot and it worked out very well.

I am not a big vacationer. I always plan time to work, a couple hours in the morning and a couple hours at night. Last year, I remember stressing throughout the day in order to be able to find an open wifi network via my iPhone, to see if I am missing anything at work. My obsession gets better throughout vacation, I think. The issue is, and I am sure most of you can relate, is the constant feeling of having to dig out of the hole from going on vacation. So every day, the hole gets bigger. You dig as much as you can in the morning and at night, but then the hole gets bigger. Then you get back to your office and you have to dig out more.

Last year, I closed down the data services on my iPhone so I would not get hit with a huge bill. But this year, I am able to sign up for an international data plan for my iPhone. My only concern is that I will go over the max usage (it is not unlimited). My other concern is battery life, so we will see. It was somewhat of an issue in Boston this year, but I survived.

In any event, this year, like last year, I plan on having a work schedule. It includes:

  • Client meetings
  • SMX prepping
  • RustyBrick billing and invoicing
  • RustyBrick emails
  • Daily RSS search news checking (so SELand can continue on)
  • Daily search forum research
  • Daily blogging at SERoundtable

When I come back, that day, which is a Sunday, I will have to spend most the day in the office. I think that day is payroll and invoicing clients day - so it is a jammed packed work day, outside of just catching up and digging out.

In summary, I am looking forward to the Israel trip but not looking forward to the big dig, on a daily basis. I guess it can be worse, I can be totally offline and have to dig out without knowing what to dig out of. I am use to being offline completely during work weeks, and I have some of those days coming up.

I don't think I am any different then most of you who read this blog. So I guess you can share in the anxiety.

Got Boots

boots everlast blackAfter years, possibly 10 years, of not owning a pair of boots, I finally caved and bought a pair. Sears was having a good deal (I think good deal) on the Everlas Chukka Boot in Black. So for $28, after tax and shipping, I ordered a pair. It was 50% cause of clearance and then an additional 25% for some other reason.

Why do I need boots? Well, we have been having bad weather specially on the weekends. Now - when it snows and I need to walk a half a mile to synagogue in dress shoes - let me just say, it is not fun. It is more like skies in a suit, then anything else.

So I ordered the black color, so it blends in well with the suits I wear at synagogue.

It has been a ten year stretch without boots. I really don't need them during the weekday snow storms. My sneakers are fine to walk in the snow with. Why has it taken me so long?

(1) I so hate shopping, so hate it.

(2) I feel it is a waste to spend money on something I'll use a few times a year.

(3) I am stubborn

(4) Maybe my past dress shoes had a better grip? My current ones are like ice skates.

So when my brother got these in the mail at the office, I asked him how much they cost. He told me the deal and I purchased myself one of these puppies.

Let it snow!

iPhone Shabbos Clock or Auto-Shut Off Alarm Clock

iPhone Shabbos ClockApple just approved two new apps we released recently. They are virtually the same app, but one is named the iPhone Shabbos Clock and the other is named iPhone Auto Shutoff Alarm Clock. Let me explain how they work.

On Shabbos, religious Jews are not allowed to use the iPhone, amongst hundreds of other things. So we cannot set a normal alarm clock to wake us up for morning services on Saturday. Why? Because we cannot shut the alarm off from beeping. So they make special alarm clocks that turn themselves off after X seconds or minutes.

So we built the same idea, as an iPhone app, and named one for the Jewish crowd (i.e. iPhone Shabbos Clock) and one for the non-Jewish world (i.e. iPhone Auto Shutoff Alarm Clock), if it is helpful for non-Jewish people to have an alarm that turns off by itself.

Now that you understand the need for it and why we have two of the same app, just named for each market, let me show you how it works...

You can set up to three alarms:

iPhone Shabbos Clock

You can then set how many seconds the alarm should go off for:

iPhone Shabbos Clock

Once you set it, the time will show in landscape mode only:

iPhone Shabbos Clock

Important things to note: Touching the screen will not do anything, except for hitting set alarm. We do this on purpose, because we don't want you to do anything by accident to the phone when it is on Shabbos. Turning the phone won't change the orientation, again - a shabbos thing. Also, make sure to keep your phone or iPod Touch plugged in, because it keeps the app open and doesn't shut off the phone or sleep it, while it is on. Also, the App must be open for it to alarm. Finally, make sure your volume is loud enough to wake you. Got all of that?

You can get the Shabbos version over here for 99 cents and the Standard version over here for 99 cents.

Breathalyzer for the iPhone

It is possible for the iPhone to become a Breathalyzer? Well - not yet, but we can fake it.

We recently built the Breathalyzer Test for the iPhone. It is basically a really life like hoax. This is how it works.

Step 1: Set the hoax on your friend, so set how drunk you want them to be. It has a random setting also... Hit Done.

Breathalzer iPhone App

Step 2: Give the iPhone to your friend and tell him to hit the green blinking button in the middle of the device and then breath a slow, steady blow into the microphone.

Breathalzer iPhone App

Step 3: The results will come back with what you set and your friend will laugh.

Breathalzer iPhone App

If your friend does not breath for a steady 3 seconds, it will return a fail message:

Breathalzer iPhone App

Just press the green button again to start the test again.

This has sound effects, it really detects breathing and it is really convincing.

There is another test like this out there now (launched the same day) but it doesn't detect breathing in the mic, it doesn't have sound effects either.

Get it for 99 cents at iTunes.

So, How You Doing? Business Still Good?

piracySmall chat these days is basically the following conversation. So, how is everything? Are you doing okay in these economic times? Business good? How you dealing with it?

It is like the same convo I have with different people that I haven't seen in a while. I guess it is like talking about the weather. But who cares how cold or wet it is outside when we are in a really bad recession.

Heck, I even hear kids (elementary school age) talking about the recession.

I guess it is good to talk about it, helps people not worry as much...

A little over a month ago, I asked, Are you worried about the economy? The 44 results included 36.36% are worried a little, 27.27% are very worried, 22.73% are just worried and 13.64% are not worried at all. I wish I was part of the 13%. :)

I am a worrier, that is just me. Well - I don't worry about everything, just what I consider valid things to worry about and with this recession and running a company, with employees, families and other companies depending on the company, I feel pressure to keep on ticking. Now, my company is doing well - we are doing just fine. But I still worry based on hearing all the economic data every day on the radio or via Internet. I worry when I hear that hundreds and hundreds of well known retailers will be closing their doors. I worry when I hear financial institutions are failing. I worry when I hear about job reports.

I can just hope it passes soon, not that I expect it to. I just hope that my family, friends and people I know are not impacted by the recession too much.

In any event, if you have not taken the poll, it still should work - go take the poll. And here is a new poll. How soon do you think we will start seeing a recovery.

Personally, I think it won't be until some time in 2010.

YouTube Views - A Bit High?I have been producing video recaps of the search news on a weekly basis for a year now. You can find the feed at this location and subscribe via iTunes or your feed reader or my YouTube Channel. But recently, it seems like I have been getting a lot more than my typical hundred or two views on YouTube.

Now, I have about 200 iTunes subscribers. There are then some who watch the video source file (hard to track those numbers) and then there are people who watch it on YouTube. The YouTube numbers are typically between 100 and 200 views per video.

Recently, I noticed I have been getting thousands of views on my YouTube videos.

Now, either I have turned into the next YouTube Phenom or something fishy is going on. Either way, make sure to watch or just listen to the videos - I am get feisty in the newer ones.

Yes, you do not have to "watch" them, you can just listen on your iPod since we have an iTunes subscription.

Was I Beta? Beta FiOS Remote DVR?

FiOS Remote DVRThe news is buzzing about Verizon now, all of a sudden, offering remote DVR capabilities for their FiOS customers. Hmm....

I had this feature in November and I documented how it works very thoroughly. But the releases claim this is brand new and was first demonstrated at the CES event today.

Was I part of some private beta that I didn't know about? I personally really like it. I often use it to browse what will be on and quickly record shows that I don't want to miss.

Since nothing is ever on, I rarely have to record anything these days. ;-)

Stealing iPhone Apps

piracySoftware piracy is a huge business, it costs software developers a lot of money, but it also costs software consumers a lot of money, because it is built into the price of the software.

Software piracy is not only an issue with desktop software but with mobile software, like iPhone apps. I read an interesting write up named Game Developer Confronts iPhone Software Cracker. It basically discusses the rational of why software pirates feel they are entitled to steal and distribute the stolen software, for free, to those that do not want to pay for it. It is a must read.

When we found out that our iPhone Siddur was on the torrent list of apps stolen and being distributed, we were actually some what excited. I mean, if your app is good enough to make a list of apps that people want to steal, well - that says something. But the article above doesn't agree with that rational. So now I don't know what to think. I mean, 99% of our users gave us five star reviews, so clearly, the app is worth the $10 to 99% of the folks out there.

Anyway, I keep track of our sales and I also know how many people have the iPhone Siddur on their iPhones. I can tell you that there are about 30% more Siddurs on iPhone than what was paid for. This can happen for two reasons:

(1) They stole it via a torrent site or
(2) They use the same iTunes account as a friend or family member and downloaded it on their iPhone as the same iTunes user.

What I find nice is that several people have either emailed us or called us asking us permission to do #2. I always say yes, and I really appreciate the email. Some have even gone as far as to send us money, not through Apple, because they felt it was the right thing to do. Again, appreciated.

But for iPhone Developers to continue making products and improving them, we need the income. I do believe that stolen releases lead to other people buying it. Overall, I don't think this is a major issue for most of my products but I can see this being an issue for other developers.

Connecting With Old Friends Via Blogs & iPhone Development

old men on benchBlogging and building iPhone apps have really been interesting in terms of people I reconnect with over the years.

Way back in 2004, I reconnected with a friend from High School. We reconnected after learning he was working at Did It, back then. His name was EliFeldblum and he now runs a successful SEO company in Israel. Has a family with kids and everything. We haven't talked for about 10 years and then bam, all of a sudden, we are now connected again. We now touch base regularly, via email and so on.

This happens every now and then. In fact, Danny just blog about how this happens all too often in the Facebook World. I am sure, almost everyone on Facebook has experienced this.

But what I find very interesting, now that we have built a niche for ourselves in iPhone Apps for Jews, well, mostly. So through these apps, I am connecting with people who know people that I know. But I am also reconnecting with folks I lost touch with. First it was someone from Baruch College, that I took a bunch of classes with. Then it was a few others. But recently it was someone I went to elementary school with and haven't really seen since.

Eliyahu Fink has recently started a blog and wrote about the iPhone Siddur. Eliyahu Fink was the son of my elementary school's principle. He is in law school right now and is also a part time Rabbi for the PJ Center in Venice, California. We connected via the iPhone stuff and through blogging. I spoke with him for a bit the other day and it was nice to catch up.

Blogging, development and the social aspect of the web not only helped me with business, and making new friends but has also helped me connect with old ones.

Do I Cause Information Overload in the Search Marketing Industry?

information overloadSometimes I feel like I am creating content just to create content. Yea, I write a ton - a ton - every day about search. Typically no less than 10 articles per day on search topics, but often more than that. Yea, I complained about spewing stuff out before, but now I am focusing on search content.

Is it useful? Does it help the search community?

The content is very routinized. Well, the content isn't but the process in which I discover and distribute that content is done in a very organized and routinized manner.

Often people miss what I write and find it months later on smaller blogs that write much less. Yea, it bugs me when this happens but it doesn't happen all that often, plus I make the mistake of missing information on other people's blogs as well.

But I believe this happens due to the sheer volume of what I produce every day. Take a look at yesterday, here is what I wrote at the two blogs I manage:

Search Engine Roundtable Topics:

  1. Are Low Google AdWords Quality Scores Due to "Penalties"?
  2. Case Study: Transferring Google PageRank With Redirects
  3. Yahoo Updates Search Advertisers Terms & Conditions
  4. Are Google AdSense Optimization Reports Helpful?
  5. SEO's View of Google's Greatest Achievements of 2008
  6. Is Google's PageRank Indicators in Webmaster Tools Useless?

Search Engine Land Topics:

  1. Google Trends Features ASCII Art Of 9/11
  2. Yahoo To Advertisers: We Can Create Ads & Edit Keywords Without Asking First
  3. Google Wins "Gu Ge" Lawsuit In China
  4. Google Claims That Google Checkout Increases Conversion By 40% & Clicks By 10%
  5. Google Finally Brings Picasa To The Mac

That was just yesterday. Did you read all of them? In six-months from now, will you remember I or someone else wrote about these topics, if you stumble upon it in the future? Likely not. In fact, I get emails from several people asking me if X has been blogged before or not.

In addition, I hand off topics for others to write about, causing more content. And let's not forget the daily SearchCap and Forum Recaps that include all the topics on search I saw, but didn't write about.

(1) Do I cause information overload for the search industry?
(2) Is that a bad thing? I mean, I try my hardest to only write things that I think would be useful.

Some of you know, I had my first Wii experience a couple weeks ago. Well, this past Sunday, my brother-in-law and I had some serious games. I took a game, he took a game, etc etc. At the end, he used some dirty tactics, which I won't mention to win the last match.

The Wii is a lot of fun and even better when you play against someone at your level.

Perfect iPhone App for the Toilet: Fluke - Random App Finder

iPhone Fluke AppOver the weekend, our latest app was released. This app is named fluke - random iPhone app finder. In short, it will show you a random app each time you shake the phone.

I consider this app to be the perfect app for the toilet.

I know, I know, I am very against using your phone in a public bathroom, very against it. But honestly, there are tons of people who do it. So instead of yapping away on your phone and disturbing the guy or gal next to you in the other stall, use this app. It is quiet, easy to use, fun and you can strike gold with it.

You basically shake it, it finds a random app, and you can either click over to the App Store from it, email it, or look at your history of what you saw. In addition, you can filter what you want to see (i.e. free apps in the lifestyle and entertainment categories), if you so please.

You can get the app for free at rustybrick.com/iphone/fluke/get/.

My 2009 Search Predictions, Kind Of...

I spoke with Virginia Nussey from BruceClay.com on their SEM Synergy show about some of what I thought stood out in 2008 and what we might expect in 2009. Seems like I am not on until about half way in the show.

FYI, I did a huge write up at the Search Engine Roundtable on this. I wasn't really prepared for the questions Virginia asked me, but I was prepared in my Search Engine Roundtable write up.
