Based on your hints, I'm going to guess a donation/tzaka box. the biggest on I've ever seen mind you but that's it.

OK, two thoughts:
1. Lead-lined box for Kohanim to stand in, thereby avoiding tum'a (ritual impurity)
2. Gun safe

I'll give you all a hint. A similar thing is at the entrance to the kotel. It can be found in the picture linked to below, in the center and the far bottom

Interesting. Is it a box that you can look through the top and see the ground (or grave or remains below)? Either that or an ancient water fountain.
