Apple Removes Thousands Of iPhone App Reviews

Nasty Jewish Review on iTunesA couple days ago, I noticed the number of reviews for the iPhone Siddur dropped from 101 reviews to 79 reviews, over night. I scratched my head and forgot about it.

The next day, I saw a comment from my post about anti-semitic comments in iTunes that Apple has removed them because they removed reviews from people who did not pay or download the app.

Apple must have removed tens of thousands of reviews. MacRumors said that SEGA's Super Monkey Ball count dropped from 4197 reviews down to 3710. So logically, if you add up the apps and the possible number of fake reviews, those numbers are probably very high, probably in the tens of thousands or more.

Personally, I am just glad they got rid of the anti-semitic iPhone app review that has been on some of my apps since September 2008.

GPS Off The Mark This Morning: Fog?

This morning it was incredibly foggy. Went I began driving, I noticed the GPS was off. It thought I was maybe 50 feet from where I was. This is unusual for this GPS, because it is built into the car and uses more than just satellite to pin point my location. As I continued to drive, it remained off.

Here is a picture, see, I am not on a road:

GPS Off the Mark

I guess the extreme fog this morning had something to do with it.

I have seen this a lot with external (portable) GPS devices in NYC (tall buildings) or with bad weather or in tunnels, but never in my area in my car.

So I thought I take a picture and blog it (cause that is what I do).

Do I Have Over Efficiency Syndrome?

Light SwitchI am mad about being efficient. Mad about it.

I was telling someone that I am not sure if I can become more efficient then I am now. Honestly, I am sure there are ways I can be more efficient. But I didn't say that. I gave her an example of how crazy I am about efficiency. Let me share this example with you, even though, you may think I am nuts.

You know the light switches that have two switches or more on the same switch cover? There is an example of what I am talking about in the picture above. Well, I am so crazy about being efficient that I have to have the dual switches that I use daily in the same position. Either all up or all down.

Why is this? It has nothing to do with being OCD and must having it look a certain way. It is about being able to efficiently turn on or off the lights. I don't want to waste the time of having to turn one switch up and the other one down, to achieve my goal. (Note, these lights are controlled by two different areas, so being up or down might mean on or off, depending on the other switch.) I want to be able to quickly swipe my hand either upwards or downwards to be able to achieve that goal in a single motion, as opposed to two motions.

Crazy, I know. But when this person asked if I was OCD, she asked me, "You don't turn flip the switch three times and spin around in a circle, do you?" I said no. I just flip the switches on or off and go on with my business.

It is a good thing I have a good wife who agrees to put up with those things. :)

Update: Let me be clear. I don't care if the switches are in the same position. I just care that I can turn them on or off with one motion.

Suggestion: Google Product Search Should Add Alerts

Huge RSS IconHere is an idea for Google Product Search. We know you have Google Alerts, so can you this to Google Product Search?

For example, I am in research mode for buying a new video camera and I have my eyes on a specific camera and I am watching the price on that camera. So I specifically saved a link to the Google Product results for that camera, so I can manually check every now and then to see if there was a price drop.

I am expecting the price to drop a hundred or two hundred bucks when Sony releases an new model for this product line in March. But I am not sure exactly when that will happen and when the price will drop. So I check every now and then that link to see if it will drop in price. If they added an RSS feed or email alert, like deal news sites have, I would 100% subscribe to certain product results at Google.

Good idea?

Oh, if you work at an electronics store and want to hook up a blogger with a good deal on that video camera, please do contact me.

Will Apple Reject Our Killer iPhone App? Fluke Music?

Fluke Music & Apple iTunesSome of you know about our pretty popular iPhone app named Fluke. It basically find random apps and let's you explore them. It is a fun and useful app to discover new apps, when you have the time.

So we decided to release a new app, just like it, but for music. We named it Fluke Music and it randomly finds music, and allows you to filter by category of music (i.e. Jazz, country, rock, etc.) The cool part of the app is that it streams 20 second samples of the tracks over the Internet. So you open the app and it just plays music and random, which is very fun, imo. The purpose is to help music lovers discover new songs, that they may have not discovered otherwise.

Great concept, right? Well, it seems to me that Apple doesn't think so. It seems to me that Apple might forever keep this app in the "In Review" status. Why do I think that? Well, we released a couple apps after submitting this app and those were either approved or rejected already and this one just remains stuck in this status. No response from Apple. We had a similar issue with a client app and it is still not resolved. Do you think Apple doesn't like this app because it plays music samples?

Here is a video that demonstrates the app in action:

Do you think they don't like it because it links both to iTunes and Amazon (a competitor) to buy the song? I am not sure. Maybe I am thinking up conspiracy theories?

And I can even record a show:

I checked and it is actually scheduled to record on my DVR box!

Other features include:

  • Bookmark new videos on demand
  • Change parental controls
  • Browse TV listings, noted above
  • Browse top purchased videos on demand
  • View status of your set top boxes
  • Browse or record prime time shows
  • Browse or record top tv shows

Below I will include more screen shots. I am sure these menus will change over time.

What can't you do that you can do on the non-mobile site? One thing I see is the ability to delete DVRed shows but I am sure there are other things.

iPhone Controlled Car by Ringspeed

Ringspeed iChangeI am a strong believer or adopter of using technology to increase efficiency and utility. Automation, streamlining, and efficiencies are core to my way of working. In all honesty, I am a bit of an efficiency nut. Even the way I enter or leave my house, is done so with the most efficiency as possible, to not waste a second. I am crazy.

So when I see car concepts from companies like Ringspeed named iChange, I get excited. iPhone-controlled car to demo at Geneva Motor Show via MacWorld explains that Ringspeed is demoing a car that using the iPhone as a way to control certain elements of the car. It replaced your keys, and I already have those smart access keys for my car and I would love to ditch them, and my other keys, in place of my iPhone. Yes, access control can go wrong, as I experienced first hand, but I would much rather put up with those issues on a rare occasion than to have to carry extra keys. Let me do away with all my keys!

Back to the iChange, here is a picture of the inside of the car, take a look at the left top of the picture, the iPhone holder:

Ringspeed iChange

The iPhone will also turn on and off your headlines (which I am not impressed with, because that should be automated based on if it is raining or dark outside).

The cool thing is that this care is the "world's first car whose body adapts to the number of passengers on board." Now that is cool!

Blacklisting Spam Email in Gmail

How does one blacklist a specific email address from showing up in their Gmail inbox. I get this question a lot, so I thought I would blog it and then tell people to read this blog post when I am asked again.

Yes, you get the spam over and over again from the same email address. Or you are signed up to your friend's mailing list and you don't want to insult him by asking him to remove you, but you don't want those email. Simple answer is to blacklist the email. But how do you do that in Gmail?

You set up a filter. Here is how.

(1) Go to Gmail
(2) Click Settings
(3) Click on Filters
(4) Click Add New Filter
(5) Enter Email address in from box and click Next Step:

(6) Check off the "Mark as Read" and "Delete It" check boxes and click "Create Filter.

Renewed Drivers Licenses Online After In-Person Eye Exam

Eye ExamIn about a month, my New York drivers license expires. I got a letter in the mail from the NY DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles that I can renew online. There was a catch. I had to get an eye exam.

I don't wear glasses, but last time I went to renew my license, I was 18 years old, I almost didn't pass the eye exam at the DMV. I was struggling to see the letters. So this time, I was nervous that I would fail and have to wear glasses where ever I drive. Don't get me wrong, I see fine. But if I drive without a GPS at night to a place I have never been, I wear glasses so I can see the street signs from further away. But typically, I rarely where glasses. I did not want to have to wear glasses when driving. So I was a bit anxious with this eye exam.

Last night I Twittered off to eye doctor and I was off. In fact, Daechon offered me a discount on contact lenses, if I wanted. Thanks Daechon, I am good (see above).

The doctor gave me my eye exam, it was quick. I scored a 20/25 in each eye individually and a 20/20 in both eyes together. I know you guys were worried.

In any event, I then went online and completed my renewal of my drivers licenses. The thing is, my photo is from when I was 18. I look a heck of a lot different now, then I did when I was 18. But I guess that is not my problem.

My Nemesis: Barry Schwartz The Psychologist

I have been seeing a ton of twittering going on about my name. But this Twittering, has nothing to do with me, it has to do with my nemesis giving an outstanding and extremely thought-provoking speech at the TED conference.

His speech was named The real crisis? We stopped being wise and it is a must watch, about 20 minutes long. Here it is:

Barry Schwartz, the psychologist is extremely well known, mostly for his book named The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less. People talk about this book every day, guaranteed. But now, he may have outdone his book with his TED speech.

Why is he my nemesis? Not because he has about 35 years on me, but because he outranks me for my own name barry schwartz in Google. I guess if I changed my title tag to Barry Schwartz on any of those sites, I would do better, but I won't be doing that.

Plus, he owns the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Schwartz URL at Wikipedia, where I own en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Schwartz_(technologist).

Anyway, this Barry Schwartz is way smarter than yours truly. Watch the video and you will see why.

What Makes Someone A Lottery Person?

NY Lottery LogoThis morning, I was in a 7/11 to pick up a packed lunch and I saw an old colleague. I paid for my food and then when I left, I heard him say to the nice checkout guy, "Lottery ticket please."

Tangent, I love the 7/11 checkout guys, btw. Okay, back on topic.

I then thought to myself... I would never have pictured him as a lottery man or gambling man. Then I thought, why not? Why couldn't he buy a lottery ticket? I then thought, what makes one buy a lottery ticket? Is it their personality? Is it their financial needs? Is it just boredom? Is it tradition? Is it a sense of hope?

I personally have never purchased a lottery ticket. Really, I never in my life bought a lottery ticket. When I was a kid, I may have bought one of those scratch and wins. But that was purely for boredom.

I then thought, why won't I buy a lottery ticket. What is so bad about the lottery. Is it something I would be embarrassed buying? Does buying a lottery ticket show a sign of desperation or of not being self-sufficient?

I then wondered, did that guy in 7/11 this morning try to wait for me to leave before asking for the ticket. He is normally a loud guy but he seemed to have asked for the lottery ticket, in a quiet tone, possibly as to stop me from hearing his request. Was he embarrassed for me to hear he was buying a lottery ticket? Do I think of him as different now? Should I?

Am I just looking into lottery tickets a bit too much?

Video Camera Purchasing Decisions: Do I Spend For Better Quality?

Sony HDR-SR12 120GBAs many of you know, I am expecting my first child soon, in about three-months. And with that comes a lot of shopping and preparing for the new child. Cribs, car seats, gliders, toys, safety devices and the list goes on and on.

My big purchase will likely be a video camera. My wife wants me to get one and I have always wanted a real video camera. I do weekly videos on search topics and I currently use my built in iSight, so the quality is not great. I did invest in a USB mic because sound quality is something people aren't willing to put up with. But video quality, on the web, is still something people don't expect much from. That will change, YouTube now allows you to watch videos in higher quality and my iSight won't do that. I know people don't care to look at me in high definition. But when I take videos of my new kid, I am sure family will want to get the best quality as possible.

In any event, I am a bit iffy on which video camera to get. I 100% want a camera that is HD quality. I 100% want a camera that is plug and play with iMovie. Outside of that, I hear there are many things you should look for in a camera, but do I need it. Those features include image stabilizer, good in low light, hard drive based, and some other things.

So if I want the best possible HD hard drive camera for personal use, I believe my best bet is the Sony HDR-SR12. It does pretty much everything I want and works incredibly well with iMovie, as far as I can tell from all the reviews I have read.

The big draw back is the price tag at being about $1,200 - but doing some quick searches, I think I can get it for in the $900 range. But $900 is still a lot of money. Last year, I would have likely purchased it already. But we are in a recession, if you haven't noticed and I am much more careful with what I do buy and what I don't buy.

The question is, do I go for this camera or get a cheap one instead? I know I will use it for both family purposes and business purposes, very often (at least once a week). I know it won't just sit in the closet and collect dust. But do I need to get the top of the line model? Is the price worth it? Should I go cheaper?

Really looking for advice here...

Are Terrorists Using My Blog For Secret Communication?

Lego TerroristsYou sometimes hear of underground networks of terrorists or other groups, using newspapers or web publications secretly to pass encoded messages to one an other. I don't know much about how this works or if it is real.

I often joke about one blog post on the Search Engine Roundtable named Lost? Google Mobile Phone Locator Will Find You. I posted it in November 2007 and since then, it gets a constant stream of comments, with phone numbers. It now has well over 400 comments and those comments did not come in a single day, they come almost every day, a few at a time.

I often wonder if a group of people are using the comments area in that blog post to exchange ideas and plans. Just scan through some of the comments. Most take the form of, "I lost my phone, here is the number." But why would someone bother with that? Maybe people are stupid?

Maybe I am stupid for writing this. Do I believe people are using my blog for terrorist planning? I really don't. But sometimes, I wonder - "what if."

Tu Bi'shvat - New Year of the Trees

Today is New Year of the Trees also known as Tu Bi'shvat (which is the date ט״ו בשבט‎). Growing up in school, it was the day you planted trees in Israel (so we donated a few bucks to make that possible, since we couldn't physically go to Israel and plant them ourselves). Here is a picture I found on Flickr of kids planting trees (not sure it is in Israel, but you get the point):

Many Jews will eat a platter of dried fruits including the seven species associated with Israel, Wheat, Barley, Grapes, Figs, Pomegranates, Olives and Dates. Personally, I do not like dried fruit, so I skip it. :)

You can learn more about the day on Google, if you like.

Liquid Soap With Beads Feels Messy

Softsoap Shea Butter DirtySome how, a bottle of Shea Butter SoftSoap got into my bathroom, don't ask me how. So the past few days, I kept washing my hands and then having the urge to wash my hands again. I didn't pay enough attention to care why.

But last night, I looked and noticed there were little beads in the soap. Those beads made me feel like I had dirt on my hands, even after washing my hands. To me, that is just annoying.

I do not mind bar soap with these beads on them. In fact, I prefer bar soap with those beads, especially irish spring.

But for some reason, the same beads in liquid soap doesn't sit well with me.

Quick Demo of iPhone Analytics App

If you are a web analytics junkie like me and you use Google Analytics for most of your tracking and you have an iPhone (got that). Then you will love this new app from Michael Jensen named Analytics App. I did a 3 minute video demo of the application. This is really worth the $6, if you meet the above criteria. Are You One of Madoff's Victims?

Wall Street ArrestLast night, the list of the Madoff scandal victims were released. For many, the actual dollars lost were included in the report.

The Wall Street Journal has a copy of the 162 page madoff client list in PDF format. You can download it and see if any of your rich friends are on this list. Well, I guess they might not be rich anymore. There is a Barry Schwartz on the list, but it is a Barry A. Schwartz in Merrick, New York - which I think is in Long Island. Anyway, it is not me.

WSJ also has a clean list of the most exposed victims of Madoff. Too many names on that list look familiar, including many charities, non-profits and schools.

I keep thinking, "what a shame... what a shame..."

I Got No Water : Major Water Main Break

This morning, I was in the bathroom and I heard these weird hushing noises. I then tried to turn on the new faucet to wash my hands but nothing worked. I first thought, did I pay my water bill? I then thought, did I install my faucet correctly? So I tried the tub and nothing came from there. I went to my basement to see if there was a flood or something and there was none.

So I called the water company who told me there was a major water main break in my area. Here is a map of the area of the main break:

Here is the official release from the water company on the issue and the news piece from the local paper. In these cold conditions, route 202 froze over with ice, making it dangerous to drive.

Right now, my home does not have any water. Some homes do, but they have very low water pressure. The main question is, when will it be fixed and will the water be clean?

Here is a video of the water gushing all over the street:

When I found out it was a main break, I said to my wife - thankfully it is only the water. At least the Internet works. :) I was serious. I brought up some bottled water to the bathroom.

Very Annoying iPhone App - Feedback

Apple just approved one of our most annoying iPhone apps. So annoying, I think it will do incredibly well. It is called Feedback and it is available for free on iTunes.

Basically, it produces that feedback sound you get from speakers. You know, the ear piercing, annoying sound, when you put a microphone next to a speaker.

I created a quick video to demonstrate it, here it is:

Jewish Family Purity iPhone App

Jewish Family Purity iPhone App LogoBased on popular request, we have built a new application for the iPhone that is named the Mikvah iPhone app. But it does a lot more than look up the closest Mikvah. It has Mikva'ot Database, Vestos or Taharas Mishpacha Schedules, Mikvah Zmanim, Family Purity Guidelines, Mikvah Checklist, Contacts and Privacy with Password Protection.

For those of you who are not observant Jews or Jews at all. This is called Taharas HaMishpacha. In short, this tool is to help observant Jews practice the strict laws of the relationship between a man and wife. There are tons and tons of laws around this and I won't get into the details, but if you want to read about it, in pieces at Wikipedia on Niddah, Mikvahs and Jewish Marriage.

Outside of that, I am way too tired to write up the screen by screen again, so just look at what I wrote and the screen captures at rustybrick.com/iphone/mikvah. A ton of work went into this program.

Here are some of those screen captures:

Catch Up Day - Back in New York

Sorry for not posting anything today. I am in catch up mode.

I landed last night at about 5pm, got home at about 6pm. Brought our bags upstairs and then went to work until about 7:30pm to do some critical things.

Then all day today, was a lot of catching up.

You would think, that working 4 hours each day while on vacation would leave not much to catch up on - but nope, it doesn't work that way, does it...
