I Want Better Water Pressure

Water PressureThe one thing I miss about my previous home, the Monsey condo, is the water pressure. My new home, which I have been at for over 18 months now, has horrible water pressure.

I tried changing the shower head in my bathroom, but that really didn't do much.

The bottom line is that the water pressure is a trickle compared to what it is/was in my condo.

Is there anything I can do? I suspect no but there could be.

I read some sources online that says there are ways to adjust this. But when I had my home inspection, the guy told me that the water pressure is low, but it wasn't horrible. I didn't ask if there was a way to improve it, I assumed if there was, he would have told me about it.

Some of the tips I read online on improving water pressure in a home include:

  • Adjust the pressure regulator near the main water shut off
  • Old pipes may be corroded (I don't have old pipes)
  • Might be a water company issue
  • Call a plumber

Maybe one day, I'll just call a plumber and ask a professional about it.

iPhone Use Phones for Personal Use? Common!

Google iPhone SearchA Compete report mentioned by the NY Times blog says that 73 percent of iPhone owners used their mobile devices primarily for personal reasons, such as entertainment. I find that incredibly high, but what do I know.

Personally, I would say I use my iPhone for 90% work. I am constantly checking email when using my iPhone. I am constantly reviewing Google Reader, adding topics to RustyBudget to blog about later. I frequently use my phone for calls with clients. Okay, so I check stocks, weather and on occasion use TwitterFon.

I have downloaded many games, but I rarely ever use them. I rarely even use the iPod, except when flying when I download movies. I rarely ever watch movies, so when I do watch them, it tends to be on planes on my iPhone.

I do use my iPhone to pray three times per day on. I use the iPhone Siddur for weekday prayers every day, except on Shabbos (Saturday). So outside of the Email, Safari, Phone and Siddur, I don't use many other apps on the iPhone.

Again, 90% of my usage would be classified as work related.

TechCrunch gives more insight into the study saying:

The Compete survey reportedly found that 73% of iPhone owners used their mobile devices primarily for personal reasons, but what isn’t detailed is how much time in total they are using their phones - which I imagine is a whole lot more than on other smartphones - and how much more efficient it makes them when they actually do use it for work.

How one classifies work usage in the study can be a big difference.

Estimated Life Span of RustyBrick Fridge: 18 Months

RustyBrick FridgeThe RustyBrick 2007 holiday gifts were mini RustyBrick Fridges. They were not as big of a hit as our RustyBrick Laptop Bags but they were a nice hit.

In any event, the RustyBrick Fridges were first put into use in early December 2007.

We stored our mounds of RedBull in these Fridges, refilled them daily. And after about 18 months, the fridge stopped working.

For a small cheap fridge like that to last 18 months, I am impressed.

It even has a car adapter to keep things cool while you drive.

So I guess we will swap out this Fridge for a new RB Fridge. But I don't think we should trash this fridge, it should go into the RB museum.

Why Bloggers Love Twitter

twitterLast night I tweeted the following:

Bloggers love Twitter b/c they aren't afraid of blogging in it, but they are afraid to blog on a blog. I'll explain tomrw.

Let me know explain what I meant...

Back in the day, when blogging was blogging, bloggers (for the most part) wrote as longer Twitter messages. Most first generation bloggers didn't proof read their blog posts, they didn't care about spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes, they were carefree about the blog posts.

A blog was a personal place to write what is going on in your head. It didn't have to be about your personal life, but it could have been. You could have started a blog to keep track of your SEO notes, like I did at the Search Engine Roundtable. You wrote and did it without worry or care.

At some points, blogs turned more into real media (although real media would argue that). Professional journalists started blogging and they even created blogs on their main sites. It happened with the Wall Street Journal and even happened to Search Engine Watch (i.e. www.searchenginewatch.com versus blog.searchenginewatch.com).

Danny Sullivan is a trained journalist. I did okay in English classes in high school. I think I took one or two college classes in the English department in business school, but nothing on Journalism. The last thing I thought I would be well-known for (at least in my niche) is for writing. But yet that is what I do for a few hours each day, I write. I don't write like a Journalist - just read my posts versus Danny's - you cannot compare. Danny's words basically rhyme, I just write the bland old facts and leave it at that. I also write like I talk, it is basically like a conversation from me to you - so it comes off a bit weird reading it, but also a bit personal.

At some point, when blogs became more part of the media, bloggers began to become more official and structured. They started creating media calendars and creating blogger budgets. Don't get me wrong, I am to blame also.

Blogs are now held to a higher authority. People expect more. But should they? I miss the old days of blogging, which were more care free.

That is where Twitter comes in. Bloggers who are stuck feeling they cannot make mistakes in their blog posts come to Twitter are rant all day. Twitter has so much quality blogger material, that could be on blogs but is not, due to how blogging has changed.

Can we set our blogs free again? I do miss the old days of blogging.

NFL Changes Jets Game Time To Accommodate Jewish Holiday

jets jewish starI missed this news, but someone share it with me today. Via the AP, NFL changes time of Jets game on Yom Kippur. What happened was the Jets had two games scheduled on two Jewish holidays, week-to-week.

The first game was on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, on September 20th and the second game was on the eve of Yom Kippur. New York is packed with Jews and even non-observant Jews tend to stay away from football games on these two very popular holidays. So the NY Jets were upset that many of their fans would not be able to attend not just one game, but two consecutive games.

I assume the NFL couldn't change both games, so they opted to change the Sunday game to start at 1pm, as opposed to 4:15pm, this way Jewish New Yorkers can get to the game and also be at Yom Kippur services at night.

Often when search marketing conferences are scheduled, the organizers know to ask me if the dates might conflict with Jewish holidays. They always make a point to check this fact when scheduling conferences in the New York area. Like I said, New York is more heavily populated by observant Jewish people, when compared to other regions. It just makes business sense.

Jimmy Kimmel has a very funny clip on this new, very funny. I can't embed it, but you can watch it at YouTube.

Best Way To Stop Annoying Callers : Fake Phone Not In Service Message

Back in the day, savvy email server admins use to respond to email spammers with a nouser command. That would then get bounced back to the email spammer and some spammers would drop that email off the list. It was basically detecting spam emails and faking that your real email account was not valid.

I just received a call from someone I rather not talk to. It happens occasionally, be it telemarketers or annoying people. It occurred to me, why don't I do the same for those people. I.e. pretend that my phone is no longer active.

So I found a sound bite that says:

We're sorry, you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service. if you feel you have reached this recording in error, please check the number and try your call again.

Here is the sound byte:

Now, if you use a PBX like service, including something like Google Voice, you can set this up to work easily. I use it with Fonality, my Astersik based PBX (is it an open source PBX system) to set it up. But I figured more of you have Google Voice (aka Grand Central), so here is how to do it on Google Voice.

Stopping Annoying Calls with Google Voice:

  1. Go to Google Voice
  2. Add a new "group" to your contacts named "Annoying People"
  3. Add a new contact(s) and assign that contact to the "Annoying People" group
  4. Then go to Settings >> Groups and "edit" the "Annoying People" group.
  5. Where it reads "When people in this group go to voicemail" add a new voicemail greeting by clicking on "Add."
  6. It will ask you to dial a phone number, enter your phone number and Google will call you.
  7. Answer the phone and play this voice byte (the one above) in the speaker of the phone
  8. Save the voice prompt.

Here is a screen shot of the group edit page:

Stopping Annoying Calls with Google Voice

Here is a video of me dialing a Google Voice number I own but do not use. I added myself as an "annoying people" contact, to demonstrate how this actually works.

Now, it appears that Google will eventually allow you to port your main number to Google Voice. Plus, Google will soon open Google Voice to everyone to use. When that happens, I assume there will be greater adoption of Google Voice. This may come in handy for me in the future or possibly yourself.

3rd Party Vandalized Goods Should Upset Me More

This morning, I got to my office and went through the back entrance. I noticed that one of the two large glass doors was smashed in. It appears like someone tried to break it. Here is a picture of it a bit later, after a maintenance guy tapped it up.

Shattered Glass Door Tapped Up

When I initially saw it, I was upset, but not really fully upset. It was first a feeling of why would someone do that, that is not nice, etc. But I then thought, if this happened to my house, I would be incredibly upset. Why am I not more upset about the vandalized property here, then I would be at my own home?

I know the answers are obvious:

  • It is not my home
  • My personal space was not vandalized
  • This wont cost me money directly
  • It didnt happen to me

But the truth is, someone owns the building. It will cost someone money (I am sure my rent covers things like this, if not insurance).

There are certain things that upset me tremendously, even when I am not directly impacted. When I hear of people losing their jobs, I get incredibly upset and disappointed. I work for myself, so I don't think I will "lose my job" but knowing that people have families to support and not having a paycheck to count on. Well, honestly, that is very upsetting. If I hear of someone I know that lost their job, it honestly ruins my day. Yea, big deal - it ruins my day, but this guys future can be in serious trouble. But it upsets me way more than seeing vandalized property. In fact, I think hearing about people losing their jobs would upset me more than if my own glass door was smashed in.

Anyway - this is just a rant, cause I haven't talked about virtually nothing in a while. ;-)

Added Solar Lights To Front Walkway

Solar LightThis week at Home Depot is a celebration for Earth Day (which is tomorrow). They are giving away a free energy efficient light bulb to each customer that wants one. I got my free bulb on Sunday, by the way.

In any event, while browsing Home Depot (which is maybe the only place I don't mind shopping at), I spotted these 6-Pack 3 Tier Metal Solar Light-Oil Rubbed Bronze. It seemed like a good deal in the store, so I bought the pack and set them out on my front walkway.

I am told these things don't last long. The light they give off, even when it is sunny all day, is very dim throughout the night and normally doesn't last the full night. This is even more true during the winter months where you need them more.

In any event, they are esthetically appealing to my house's poor landscaping. So I felt anything would be an improvement.

Do you have these? Do you love or hate them?

Two More Offline Days: Passover Greetings

Passover Soda CapTonight are the last two days of Passover for Jews outside of Jerusalem.

I go offline tonight through Thursday night. So keep things slow and don't, I repeat, do not email me. :)

The picture above is of a soda cap from a coca cola bottle. It is normally yellow, symbolizing it is kosher for Passover. The P next to the O with the U in it means kosher for Passover. I am not going to get into what kosher for passover means, but if you want to read about it, see the Wiki article on Chametz.

Speak to you all in a couple days and for those Jews out there, Happy Pesach.

Best (Worst) Bird Poop on Cars

Over Passover, I parked my park at the Synagogue and it sat there, under a tree for three days. The result? The back half of my car is covered in bird poop. Time for a car wash...

I was too lazy to take a picture, so I went to Flickr and searched for cars with bird poop on them. There were tons of pictures, so I thought I share my favorite shots of cars nailed by bird poop.

Annoy Facebook Users A Little Bit Less

I have been on Twitter for over two years, but I have been annoying my Facebook friends for only about 10 months. Towards the end of May 2008, I connected my Twitter updates to Facebook via an automated manner. Then, I had 430 friends, now I have 730 friends. Yea, I am popular. ;-)

Seriously, I am the worst Facebook user on the planet. I go to Facebook once a day to accept friend invites. In fact, I turn off all notifications and I simply go to facebook.com/reqs.php almost every day to accept all friend invites and ignore everything else. I don't upload pictures to Facebook, I don't chat with Facebook, I simply don't use Facebook like I am suppose to. Instead, I feed my Twitter replies to Facebook and my Facebook friends have no idea what is going on.

But starting right before Passover, I downloaded the new TweetDeck, which I love, and it has given me the option to specify what I want to send to Facebook from here or not. So I completely disconnected the Twitter to Facebook stream and will now manually post things to Facebook that I think are more relevant. It doesn't mean I will use Facebook right, it just means I will annoy my Facebook friends less.

Here is a look at the new TweetDeck with the "FB" or "Facebook" check box that will send specified Tweets as Facebook status updates.

TweetDeck Twitter vs FaceBook

twitterWow, it has been just over two years since I first started using Twitter. I signed up for Twitter on March 2007, just about 25 months ago. Twitter has become incredibly popular since then, and yes, I take full credit for Twitter's growth. ;-)

I have been a steady user of Twitter. I never really stopped Twittering or let it sit idle for too long.

When did you sign up for Twitter?

Happy Passover : Offline a Few Days

Passover JunkTonight starts the first days of Passover. We are having a lot of family over for the meals (seders) and for the whole holiday.

I am actually pretty tired right now, not because I did a lot to prepare. In fact, my wife worked her butt off preparing for everyone. She really did a ton of work and deserves huge props... Plus she did it while being 8-months pregnant! So why am I tired? Picked up the in-laws last night from the airport, and the flight was a bit delayed. So between going to sleep very late, I had to get up a bit earlier than normal, due to Birkat Hachama and I think I only got 4 or less hours of sleep last night. Knowing today and tonight will be a long day, is kinda making me more tired. So I can complain but my wife really deserve to complain more. :)

In any event. I go offline tonight through Saturday night. So please do not email me, if you don't have to. Please don't come out with any breaking news. You know what? How about everyone goes on a four day weekend, starting tonight? Sound good?

What is with the picture above? Those are sugar jelly like candies. They are very popular for the holiday.

Blessing The Sun: Birkat Hachama (ברכת החמה)

SunToday is a very special and unique day, it is the day Jews believe the Sun completes a 28 year cycle where the sun has returned to its position when the world was created.

Every 28 years, Jews say a special prayer named Birkat Hachama (ברכת החמה), Blessing of the Sun, for the special day. Wikipedia has an entry that explains this in good detail:

According to Judaism, the Sun has a 28 year solar cycle known as machzor gadol (מחזור גדול, "the large cycle"). A solar year is estimated as 365.25 days and the "Blessing of the Sun", being said at the beginning of this cycle, is therefore recited every 10,227 (28 times 365.25) days. The next time that it will be recited will be on April 8, 2009 (14 Nisan 5769 on the Hebrew calendar). This coincides with the day before the Jewish Holiday of Passover (Hebrew: פסח), which is said to have happened only two other times before in history.

Technically, this is the second time I was alive for this. The first time, I was one years old, it was on Wednesday, 8 April 1981 (4 Nisan 5741). This is the second time and this time, I will remember it. The next time we say it will be Wednesday, 8 April 2037 (23 Nisan 5797).

In fact, Wikipedia has a picture of the Kotel (western wall) in Jerusalem from this morning. The place is absolutely packed. Here is that picture:

Western Wall Birkat Hachama 8 April 2009

It is a bit unusual to pray to the Sun, but we pray to the moon, once a month. That is called Birkat Levanah, but it isn't technically praying to the moon or sun... :)

Selling Coca Cola In Israel: Israel Marketing

This was sent to me via email, I thought it was funny, so I thought I would blog it...

A disappointed salesman of Coca Cola returns from his assignment to Israel.

A friend asked, "Why weren't you successful with the Israelis?"

The salesman explained:

When I got posted, I was very confident that I would make a good sales pitch. But, I had a problem. I didn't know how to speak Hebrew. So, I planned to convey the message through three posters:

Coca Cola Israel Marketing

  • First poster : A man lying in the hot desert sand, totally exhausted and fainting.
  • Second poster : The man is drinking our Cola.
  • Third poster : Our man is now totally refreshed.

And then these posters were pasted all over the place.

"Then that should have worked!!" said the friend.

"The hell it should have!!" said the salesman. "I didn't realize that they read from right to left !!!!!!"

Getting Sick on Jewish Holidays

SickWednesday night is the start of Passover and that means I go offline for four work days, completely offline.

It also means that I might get sick. I typically fall ill on Jewish holidays. I am not sure why. But if you count the times I get sick, the majority of them, fall out on Jewish holidays.

It is likely a physiological thing where I get over stressed from being out of communication, where it impacts me so much that I physically get sick.

In fact, my wife is already concerned that I am going to get sick that she has been asking me how I feel, starting this past Sunday. I honestly hope I don't get sick. I hate getting sick on these holidays. But not sure what I can do to prevent it.

I have work issues. I am a work-aholic. I stress when I am disconnected from work. I handle Shabbos (friday night through saturday night) mostly okay, simply because I do it every week and because most of the world is off those days. But being offline during the work week for two or three days straight, with no means of communication to the business, is incredibly stressful for me.

Starting this Wednesday night, I go completely offline, without turning on a computer, checking email, speaking to the employees, etc, until Saturday night. That is three full days, in a row. I then do it again on Tuesday night, through Thursday night.

It is sad for me to say this, because I should not be feeling this way about the Jewish holidays. I know my body and mind needs the rest, but sometimes, going cold turkey, is more stressful then not being in the daily grind.

In any event, I always manage through it and I wouldn't give it up for anything. I just hope I don't get sick over the holiday.

Smarter Cleaning For Passover

McCulloch MC-1275 Heavy Duty Steam CleanerLast year, I flooded my kitchen during the Passover cleaning process.

We have granite counters in our kitchen. There are two ways to make it "kosher for Passover."

(1) Wrap it in tinfoil (you may want to see that post)
(2) Use boiling water to get any "chamez" (bread substance) out of the granite

We prefer to not cover our house in tinfoil, so we opt to use boiling water. Last year, it made a mess and I was not eager to go through that process again.

I heard that people use steamer devices, so we asked around in a local Jewish hardware store and they said, it is a very popular item. We purchased a McCulloch Heavy Duty Steam Cleaner and went on our way.

It is a neat device. You pour 16 oz of water into it. Turn it on and let it boil the water. Then you press the button on the house and it ejects boiling out steam onto the counters. The counters steam up and get really clean.

This is not only faster to work with, it is also much cleaner and much safer.

Oh, it was a ton of fun to use as well. I steamed everything - I felt like a kid.

Do I Lose Business From Blogging?

GEICO BillboardI am a fairly well connected person - not as well connect as the big names, but for the average person, I am pretty well connected. That comes with pros and cons. I get a lot of prospects interested in talking and eventually some sign up.

What I have been noticing more often these days is that both prospects and clients are asking me things that they learn about me on my personal blog or on Twitter. Two days ago, a client asked me how my cold was going. Today, I spoke with a very nice prospect - who might read this, who had tons to talk to me about in regards to my immediate personal life. He knew I have a cold, he knew I was in Israel last week and he knew more. As we were talking, I was wondering, did I say anything nasty recently? I am not often a nasty person - just not my nature - but I do say things that I regret sometimes.

Like today, I tweeted:

Many SMOs, imo, don't understand the true value of social media --- there, I said it!

If this guy was an SMO, he may have been insulted.

So I wonder, if I ever say things that might hurt my business and earning a living. I know that I am a horrible sales man and it doesn't help me on closing deals or impressing prospects. But do you think my blogging helps or hurts my overall bottom line?

I am honest here. I say things here that I would say in person. In fact, sometimes I am talking to people about something personal and they tell me, "I know, you blogged it." Thing is, I don't often remember blogging it and I thought that instead, I actually told this to a friend not on my blog.

You see my writing style here. Totally fast, quick, tons of spelling mistakes and grammar issues.... I write here like I would talk to a person.

I believe I am a good guy and I believe most people think I am a good guy. So I am thinking that this blog likely helps me earn trust and eventually close more deals. Would you agree?

What is with the picture? I guess most of you get it...

iPhone's Jewish Radio Now Available

iPhone Jewish RadioLast night, Apple approved the iPhone Jewish Radio application we built back about 20 days ago.

In any event, we had people already submit new radio stations that we will be adding to the next version. Feel free to submit more!

You can get the iPhone Jewish Radio by clicking here, it is only 99 cents.

Hope you like it!

My Nike Sneakers Broke Bad

I wear sneakers pretty much every day, always had. For as long as I remember wearing sneakers, I have been wearing Nikes. I think because Michael Jordan was my favorite basketball player and he had deals with Nike for the Air Jordan - so I always want Nikes, even to this day.

On my Israel trip, I think my current Nike's broke in probably one of the worst spots. The inner back heal. Here is a picture:

Broken Nike Sneakers

Now, this wouldn't be that bad, but in this case, a hard piece of plastic is coming out from that rip and rubbing against my back heel whenever I walk.

I finally got around to buying new ones via Live Search's Cashback thing on FootLocker.com but I figured I would blog it and see if I can get a refund or a free pair of sneakers from Nike. I will follow up this post with an email to Nike with a link to this post. Who knows, I have received free things from blogging in the past - especially for defective items.

US Post Service Feeling Recession

USPSStarting this week, I have been informed by my mail man, that they will no longer deliver the mail to the individual suites in my office building.

From now on, they will deliver the mail to the post boxes on the first floor and we need to go downstairs and receive our mail.

Now, I am not complaining. I can use the exercise or con one of the employees to go down for me.

But it is amazing that they keep raising the price of a postal stamp and keep cutting the services. I guess the postal service's budget was cut in the recent round of budget cuts here? I have no idea.

Does the mailman deliver directly to your office's suite? I am sure you get the mail delivered to your home, but office?
