Under our IntuApps brand, we released a new iPhone app that has data on the Swine Flu outbreak. Let me take you through the app, which has yet to be approved by Apple. Note, if you want to be notified when the app is live, leave a comment below with your email address and I will notify you.
Starter Page, something simple:
Threat Level Page, a web page that takes info from the WHO's threat level page:
Mapping Swine Flu cases through a Google Maps RSS feed:
Clickable Map details, by clicking on a pin, you can read more details:
Swine Flu Facts:
Swine Flu Alerts pulled from WHO, CDC and HealthMap Twitter accounts. We actually used Yahoo Pipes to consolidate the feeds and host the RSS, which you can see over here. Here is a picture:
Again, to be notified when the app is live, leave a comment below with your email address and I will notify you.

I'm confused. Your images have OpenStreetMap maps, but you're talking about Google Maps. If you're using OpenStreetMap, you should be attributing its use -- that's part of the license.
Posted by: Russ Nelson | April 30, 2009 5:09 PM
Russ, the data for the flu is coming from Google Maps's My Maps.
Posted by: Barry Schwartz | April 30, 2009 5:15 PM
This is the best thing I have seen all day, I'm posting your blog to my facebook.
Posted by: Chris | April 30, 2009 6:18 PM
It looks like the base map is OpenStreetMap, not Google Maps
Posted by: Russ Nelson | April 30, 2009 7:43 PM
Russ, the map itself is OpenStreetMap, which is labeled in the screen capture.
However, the data points used to plot the pins is pulled from Google's My Maps.
Hope that clarifies things.

You should send a note to the CDC....I bet they'd find your app quite useful. Given the government push for "social distancing" I can see how this could be quite a powerful tool. Love to hear when you go live.

Any way the swine flu tracker can be developed for G1 phones? I was laid off from work, don't have medical insurance and would really, really like to not get the swine flu (or any other illness) particularly not having medical insurance...

Posted by: Stephen | May 2, 2009 4:17 AM
...also, consider renaming it the H1N1 Flu Tracker. As has recently been pointed out in many places, it's more accurate and less detrimental to the section of population involved with pig-farming. What do I care - I'm a vegetarian... but seriously, no need to destroy their livelihoods over something that is not actually connected.
Posted by: Stephen | May 2, 2009 4:21 AM
i agree that it would be better named the H1N1 Flu tracker...help give pigs back their uh..clean..image. haha

Will the app differentiate between resolved cases and live ones? This is a good app and should continue even if this flu goes away temporarily. There is a risk it may return in a stronger mutated form in the Fall.
Posted by: DanZ | May 2, 2009 6:26 PM

Similar app for medical professionals also posted to the App Store - H1N1 Update
This App doesn't have case mapping capabilities, but does provide nice resources such as content for health care professionals from UpToDate Inc.
