Finding Marijuana ASCII Art in Code

Do I have to worry if I start finding RustyBrick code marked up with ASCII art of this?

Just kidding... When I saw the article of Red Bull Cola could be banned in Germany - after traces of cocaine are found in it I joked about our tremendous amount of RedBull (which is now gone) and Jimmy (who hasn't blogged in months) said, "whatever makes us write the code faster right boss!?"

What happens when you try more creative drugs like LSD or Marijuana while coding? Do you see this type of ASCII art in your code comments?

Would be funny but crazy...

Time Machine Drive Dead : Western Digital Drive Won't Mount

Fantom Green DriveAbout a year and a half ago, I purchased a Western Digital Drive for Time Machine to run as a backup solution while I was at work. About two weeks ago, the drive stopped mounting on my MacBook Pro. I waited it out, tried using Disk Utilities, powered it down for hours and even took the hard drive out. In fact, I took the hard drive out and put it in a desktop and it wouldn't show up. I tried reformatting, no go.

So I decided to purchase a new drive, since this one is dead. The old drive is out of warranty, being over a year. So I decided to not go with Western Digital and went with a Fantom Drive. There is currently a $20 rebate for the drive at certain vendors and NewEgg.com had a $10 instant rebate as well. So I purchased the 1TB drive, which is twice as large as the other drive.

I do hope to partition the drive so that 50% would be used for Time Machine and 50% would be used for video storage. I currently use a Western Digital portable drive for storing my videos, but I rather use a desktop unit, if possible.

Pretty sad I am losing my time machine backups with the WD drive. But I only used Time Machine once or twice in 1.5 years and even then, it wasn't a do or die use of Time Machine.

Keep in mind, I still use Super Duper for bootable cloned backups and that is still working.

Changed My First Diaper

diaperI have been tactfully avoiding the diaper change for about ten-days now. But this morning that all changed when my wife seemed dead tired and begged me to change the baby's diaper. I felt bad and guilty, so I did it, I changed the kid's diaper.

I was hoping to be one of those dads that don't change diapers. Well, maybe I will now be one of those dads that rarely change diapers.

The process wasn't bad. Here is how it went:

  1. Grab kid in one arm
  2. Set up materials using other arm
  3. Place kid down on changing table
  4. Remove kid's bottom cloths
  5. Slowly take off spoiled diaper, while leaving bottom half on.
  6. Clean area with baby wipes
  7. Slide diaper off completely
  8. Slide new diaper on asap
  9. Make sure everything is clean
  10. Put on A&D ointment
  11. Secure new diaper and flare out parts around legs
  12. Put back on cloths
  13. Throw trash away
  14. Return kid to mom
  15. Go to work

Now, it was only a good process because our kid is typically (so far) calm and happy when we change her. Very grateful for that.

Now, if I can only master changing a diaper and using my iPhone at the same time, then I would be set.

FYI, click through on that picture - it is pretty funny stuff.

Running First Ad For Our Jewish iPhone Apps

There are dozens of Jewish newspapers, so we decided to test an ad in one of them, to see if it helps spike up the sales of our Jewish iPhone Apps.

Most the ads in these magazines are cluttered and very salesly. We went with an Applistic approach (at least we hope). Our ad will be on the back cover of the Front Page (a New York based weekly circulation):

RB iPhone Jewish App Ad

How about this. If you are one of the first five to take a picture of yourself with the ad and email it to me barry at rusty, I will give you a free app of your choice from the RB selection.

Got New Tefillin From a Sofer (Scribe) That Blogs

Rabbi Melech MichealsObservant Jewish men put on what is called Tefillin during weekday morning prayer services. I blogged about this when my oldest nephew put them on for the first time - proud moment.

I recently learned that my Tefillin, which I received when I became Bar Mitzvah were not all that great. They were probably "kosher" but they were not much beyond being kosher or what you would consider a quality set of Tefillin. So, I ordered a new pair of Tefillin from a Sofer (Jewish scribe) that turns out to be a blogger also.

I didn't find out the sofer blogs until after I picked up my new set. He told me he has a web site but it stinks compared to his blog. His web site is at MezuzaDepot.com but his blog is at MezuzaDepot.com/Blog.

Tefillin are kind of like diamonds, you need to be able to trust the person who sells them to you. He explained that he can't compete with stores selling Tefillin for $200. He sells higher quality Tefillin (more care goes into making them) then the cheap sellers. The way he shows people who find his web site that he is honest, experienced and trustworthy, is through his blog. I found it funny that someone in the Jewish scribe business understood this. He understands social media and all that blogging stuff, even though he is in the religious business. :)

Anyway, if your in need of quality Jewish products like Tefillin, Mezuzahs, Torahs and so on - this guy is the real deal!

Just too funny... How fitting is it that I bought this from a blogger?

Geek Dad Advice From 5 Day Old Father

mydadsageekpinknewSince I am already a dad for over 5 days now, I feel like I have the experience and wisdom to now give new dads advice. Since I would classify myself as a geek, cause I earn geek points with the wife, I geek travel, I got geek pants, I have an LED license plate, I only buy shirts with pockets for my phone, amongst other things, I figured I share some of my advice.

  • Sleep as much as you can prior, during and after delivery. The nurses tell you this, but you are too wired and excited or nervous to actually do it. But do it.
  • Make sure your wife does the same, it is even more important for her.
  • Take many pictures and sync them up to your mobile device, this way you have them when every other person asks you for a picture.
  • Bring a laptop and make sure your hospital has wifi (or bring wireless with you
  • Don't Twitter or blog the delivery if your wife doesn't want it
  • Put away all computers and phones when the time is right (probably when contractions get heavy).
  • Don't take them out until you get an approval from your wife
  • First use them only for baby purposes (i.e. pictures, calling family, etc.)
  • Practice holding baby like object (dolls maybe at first) and using computer and mobile devices (comes in handy later)

I am sure there are more tips, but since I am only 5 days into this, I am a bit exhausted, which makes it hard to think - plus I am only 5 days into this!

I would like to thank everyone for all the wonderful comments via the blog, email, IM, phone, Twitter, and even snail mail. For those that sent flowers, cards, baskets and gifts - thank you so much.

It was not necessary but it shows my wife that being a geek is not only part of my job but shows there is a community of geeks out there that care about you.

Isn't that onesie incredibly cute? Oh, that is not a hint to buy it for me - trust me. I am not sure if my wife would want 20 "My Dad's a Geek" Onesies.

Fake Acupuncture Works As Well As Real Acupuncture

AcupunctureAcupuncture, real or fake, helps aching back: study from Reuters reports on a study that showed using needles or toothpicks have the same effect on people.

Acupuncture brought more relief to people with back pain than standard treatments, whether it was done with a toothpick or a real needle, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that raises new questions about how acupuncture works.

There are some people who say that piercing the skin is not required. Well, if anything, this study kind of proves it.

After eight weeks, 60 percent of the patients who got any type of acupuncture reported significant improvement in their ability to function compared with those who got standard medical care alone.

But there was no significant difference in the pain relief people got from the acupuncture using needles or from toothpicks.

I have never personally received or seen an acupuncture procedure.

Are You A Twitter Snob?

SnobAn hour or so ago, I Tweeted a question, "Am I a Twitter Snob?"

People then asked me how would I define a Twitter Snob. Well, here is how I would define a Twitter snob, and please don't take offense (I classify myself in some of these categories):

  • Very hesitant to follow others
  • Tries to not reply to people with @name
  • Rarely ReTweets
  • When you have a Twitter convo going, they will use methods off of Twitter to give you their thoughts
  • They have a rule on the number of times they Tweet per day

I might classify myself as a Twitter snob because I sometimes think twice before following people and replying to people.

Maybe "snob" is a strong word. More about "hoarding" Twitter followers, like one would with Google PageRank.

Are you a Twitter snob?

I Am A Failure

FailLast night, I attempted to add TV hookups to a couple rooms in my house. I went to Home Depot, not the new Lowes (in my area), and I bought the materials. I researched everything online and was all ready to go.

I head up to the attic and start scoping things out. What I find are dozens and dozens of wires. About 4 different wires all look to be the same RJ6 wire type. I am not sure if I can split that cable without it impacting other devices (i.e. alarm or phone).

I then decide to see if I can locate where I would drop down the wires. I see some holes from the ceiling, with wires piped through to rooms. Thing is, I don't see the same holes in the area I would need to pipe through my wires.

I search around more, keep in mind, it feels like it is 100 degrees in the attic. After about 30 - 45 minutes, I decide it is best to hire a professional. I close everything up, without making any holes in any walls and head back into the house.

This morning, I called Verizon to do the hookup for me. I actually wish I could have done it. I know I can do the cable cutting, crimping, etc, but I am not confident I can figure out which cables to splice and where exactly to drop it without causing issues that I cannot reverse.

I failed. :-(

Considering Networking Coaxial TV Cables & Jacks

Networking Coaxial TV Cables & JacksSince I was successful at doing some plumbing work, I think I might want to try to do some networking work. I currently only have coaxial TV jacks in the master bedroom. I would love for every room to be TV ready (not that I will have my kids watching TV) but it would be nice to have. Plus, it would be great to learn how to do this, so I add this skill-set to my toolbox.

I reviewed the Lowes and Home Depot how to guides and it seems like this might be something I can do.

Material and Tool wise, I would need the following:

  • Wire Stripper
  • Crimp Tool
  • Fish Tape
  • RG-6 cable
  • F-Connectors
  • F-Connector Jacks
  • Wall Plates
  • CATV Cable Splitter

My main concern is the fishing part, fishing the cable into the rooms from the attic.

Anyway, I will scope out the details tonight in my attic and if it looks doable, I will go to either Home Depot or Lowes to get the tools and materials.

Like I said, I would love to be able to add this skill to my toolbox.

Accidently Setting Off The Burglar Alarm

Burglar AlarmMy home is on lock down all the time. We have a pretty good home security system and we use it all the time. When we are home and awake, it is set. When we go to sleep, it goes into lock down mode.

Basically, if you are awake in my house when I put the alarm in lock down, it goes off. So don't wander around or make too much noise.

In any event, on very rare occasions, I forget to disable the alarm after I wake up. I forgot this morning.

Oh boy does that really wake you up. I turn the corner and bam! Alarm sound goes blasting. You know that feeling when you are so tired and confused, you don't know which way to turn? Well, you feel some of that during that siren wailing. Then you get your composure, and head towards the nearest alarm keypad. You punch in the code and breath a sigh of relief.

That was my early morning, after finding out Gmail went offline for a bit.

Nightmare: Had To Give Up iPhone for Blackberry

blackberry 8800This morning, I woke up in a panic. I had a nightmare! The dream is a bit foggy to me now, but I'll try to recap the main points.

Somehow, I ended up in a cell phone store. Somehow, they convinced me to trade in my iPhone for a Blackberry. I honestly do not know how they convinced me to do so. But I gave up my iPhone and had a blue Blackberry device.

I came home or left the store and was with friends. I then take out my phone and I see it is a Blackberry. I begin to panic. I need my iPhone, I am lost with this junky Blackberry.

I then wake up and look around and see my iPhone in my trusty iHome. I felt a overwhelming relief and then went back to bed.

What a nightmare! I am not kidding.

Got My Google Profile Business Cards : But They Don't Work

Okay, so I ordered my Google Profile business cards and the only issue is that they don't work. Here is a picture of the card:

Google Profile Business Cards from iPrint.com

Technically, you are now suppose to enter into Google the name Barry Schwartz and then see my Google Profile in the search results. But when I search for that, I don't see a Google Profile, I see search results! Why would I give this card to people if it doesn't work?

Here is a screen capture of the search results. For more screen captures of me unboxing my Google Profile Business Cards, see Flickr.

I actually ordered two, I got two profiles one at google.com/profiles/cartoonbarry and the other at google.com/profiles/barry.schwartz.

I Got a Boutonniere Finger

Boutonniere FingerWhen I was younger, I lived to play basketball. I played every second I had. I played during lunch, breakfast, of course during gym and even during the 7 minute break between classes. Over the course of thousands of basketball games, I have broken most of my fingers over and over again.

My right hand pinky finger was broken so many times that I think I developed what is called Boutonniere deformity of the finger. It is basically where you cannot lay your finger on a flat surface and have your finger remain flat on that surface. My finger has been like that since some time in high-school. I forget exactly what year it happened.

Why am I bringing this up now? Well, I still play basketball a couple times per week. I have not really broken or 'jammed' a finger in a while, probably over two years now. Last night, during a game, I think I broke my left hand pinky finger. I thought to myself, wow - it has been a while since I did that. In any event, it is now all blue, purple and puffy. No, I did not seek medical attention (it is just a finger), nor did I put ice on it. It will get better by itself.

Oh, I must of had like 10 steals during the game, prior to the finger incident. Not bad for a large man.

Anyway, for more info on boutonniere finger, see eORTHOPOD or WebMD. There are also some serious picture of what this looks like on real hands on Google Images. Mine is not that bad, i.e. the deformity is very minor.

RustyBrickDesigns.com - Physical Construction

Matthew Hull - RustyBrick?Tamar asked me if I hired a new guy named Matthew Hull recently. I said no, I have no idea who he is. Tamar then explained this guy came up for a search on rustybrick on Facebook. It showed that the term matched for his "Job" and Tamar wondered if we hired this guy, who was from Edinburgh.

The answer was no and I had no idea who he was. That didn't stop me from immediately asking him to be my Facebook friend. ;-) And Tamar messaged him, asking him if he worked for us.

He replied and said he works at www.rustybrickdesigns.com. Taking a quick look at the site, it does look like this company does real physical home construction. We, the real rustybrick.com, of course, does real construction, i.e. web construction.

I found it pretty funny that a construction company would use the name, RustyBrick. Maybe I can refer him all my leads for physical construction requests we get here, fairly often?

Overwhelming Press on Swine Flu App News

Newspaper BoxesLast week, I gave you all a preview of our Swine Flu app and didn't expect much from it.

We built it, because there were tons of desktop and browser based mashups to get information on the Swine Flu. So we thought it would be both useful and cool to create a location-aware version for the iPhone. So we did.

I then blogged about it and decided to tip off TechCrunch about it. TechCrunch was kind enough to write about it minutes after I tipped them off. The title TC used was awesome: Want To Avoid Swine Flu? There's An App For That Too.

After that, the news took on like wild fire - kinda like an epidemic (pun is intended). CNN covered it, Fox News, TG Daily, and so many more magazines and publications. The BBC actually did a phone interview with me, I assume to broadcast on BBC Radio or TV (we did it over Skype). Plus, I have almost 200 comments on the original blog post.

This was not through Digg or Reddit or Twitter, this was through mainstream media.

Honestly, I did not think it would cause so much discussion or press. I am a bit in awe and shock.

I really wanted more press for our iPhone apps and I guess we got it. But seriously, did not think it would come from this.

Update: Here is some (not even close to all) the press about the app:

Update: Here is the audio interview from the BBC's Newshour on May 4th, 2009 the clip starts at 32:30 or so. Here is the trimmed down version, thanks to @syneryder:

127 on Flight Control iPhone App

Update: I beat this score and I am now at 187 planes landed, yippeee.

I am a bit addicted to the Flight Control game on the iPhone. The point of the game is to land as many planes in a row without crashing them into each other. You set the flight path and have them land on the correct run way.

In any event, my high score is 108 127, how about you?

Update: Someone commented asking for the "fligh traffic" so I decided to play again and I hit 127. Here is the current flight traffic during the time of the crash... Doesn't look that busy during the crash, but I landed like 6 planes within seconds of each other right after the crash...

Flooding in Email Spam Again

SpamIf anyone has emailed me, they know I reply very quickly. It has to do with my email OCD issues.

So when I get spam emails in my inbox, I am not a happy camper. But that is exactly what I have been seeing a lot of since this Friday. Spam spam spam, in my inbox. Yea, I use the same spam filter most of you use, Google App's Gmail spam filtering. Don't get me wrong, it still blocks a ton of spam. But since Friday, a week ago, I have been getting many many more spam emails then I ever have received before.

My email address is really old, from 1998. So it gets spam. But Google has been very good about blocking the spam out.

So why all of a sudden am I getting tons of spam in my inbox?

I think I know why. I decided to use the "opt out" links on some (not all) mass emails. Maybe, since I used that link, they found out I look at my emails and didn't unsubscribe me, but rather added me to more lists. I really think it has to do with that.

I asked others on the same domain as me and other Gmail users, and they did not notice any change in spam levels.

Possible issues:
(1) Bug with Google on my specific account
(2) Getting more spam in general, thus more come through (opt out thing)
(3) Everyone is getting more spam in their inbox

My Wife Married A Blogger

Barrry Blogging in CarLast night I was thinking about my life and how I blog a lot (yea, very deep stuff) and it occurred to me that my wife married a blogger. I was blogging well before we got married. Not many bloggers I work with can say that.

My blogging obsession (including my work obsession), was something she was aware of before we got married. Some spouses can say, you weren't like this when we were married. Not my wife. ;-)

I was justing thinking of the married crew at Search Engine Land and the majority of them were married before "blogging." I think Danny was a journalist before getting married, but there wasn't such a thing as blogging back then. Chris Sherman, Greg Sterling, even Matt McGee, I think were all married before blogging. So it is cool if their wives complain about their constant need to post things to a blog.

But my obsession was pre-marriage, so no complaints. ;-)

Honestly, like I have said time after time. I am a lucky man. My wife is extremely patient with me, extremely good about my obsessions and very supportive. I am not suggesting that my wife complains, she never does. It was just a deep thought by Barry Schwartz from last night.

And since I am a blogger, I had to blog it.

(Oh, the picture above is from me blogging while driving, which I have done many times.)
