Two Apple Cinema Displays With My MacBook Pro

Two Apple Cinema Displays on MacBook Pro

The above image is a picture of my new set up. There are two Apple Cinema Displays, one is the new 24" display and the other is the old 23" inch display (not the really old one). Plus, my MacBook Pro's display all the way on the right.

Didn't I have three monitors running off my MacBook Pro already? Yes, but there was an issue. The Kensignton adapter I original purchased, did not support the resolution I wanted to go with a wide screen solution. But after reading Danny Sullivan's 4 monitor setup solution, I learned he did everything I did - minus use the Kensignton. Instead, he purchased the Diamond BVU195 and it was both fast and supported his maximum resolutions.

So the other night, I purchased the adapter via Amazon and with a nice money gift from someone in the industry (won't name names), I bought the new Apple Display. Today, both arrived and I set it up.

As you can see, on the far left, I have the new Apple Display. It is plugged directly to the MacBook via the mini DVI port. I then used the Diamond adapter to plug the old Apple Cinema Display into the USB port on my MacBook Pro (I decided to plug it directly into the Mac, as opposed to a USB hub). I then re-installed (I uninstalled it when I went back to my old setup) the latest DisplayLink Mac Beta software and restarted. Presto - I was set up.

I am in heaven!

I am not yet set on how I will arrange the screens. Right now, I have my main monitor on the left and then go to the right from there. I am not sure which software, web pages, etc will go on which screens yet - time will tell. But I have so much more space to work with now.

I am in heaven!

Why I Keep Blogging About Search

I have been writing consistently on search, seo, sem, Google, etc for over six years now. It is a long time, but there are others who have been writing about search consistently longer than I have. By consistently, I mean, really never stopping in the six year plus period. All together, I have written over 20,000 blog posts on search between the various sites I write/wrote at, i.e. Search Engine Roundtable, Search Engine Land and formerly Search Engine Watch.

I started this in 2003 as just hobby, as a notebook for my own SEO notes. It turned into a lot more. It doesn't drive much of my income, but it does have some financial perks. If I didn't have a solid job with my company, RustyBrick, I doubt I would be able to do this. Plus, my wife is very understanding. ;-)

In short, I really enjoy the search industry and I don't do the blogging for the money. I do it because I feel like I am helping the industry out. Sometimes, it feels very routinized and boring - but when I get a thank you from people, even the smallest email, tweet, letter - it means a lot.

Last night, Sebastian tweeted something that really made all of 2009 efforts worthwhile. Yea, less than a 140 characters and I feel that 2009 was not wasted. He wrote:

Why I Do It

Then it got at least two retweets, one from a Googler, JohnMu (who rocks, btw) and another from an AdWords specialist, @EdWords.

Why I Do It

Why I Do It

Amazing what 140 characters can mean to someone.

Thanks!

I Met a Loud Laugher

LaugherI met a wonderful, funny, kind and nice person recently. But this person also turned out to be an incredibly loud laugher.

There are soft talkers, loud talkers, close talkers - but I honestly never met a loud laugher before. The thing is, the person talked at a very normal volume, but when he laughed - bam - it was loud.

Again, this was a cool, nice guy. It was just a interesting to meet such a loud laugher.

Did you ever meet such a person? Again, the person's normal volume was just fine but when a laugh came out, the volume went on max.

I should add, the horse picture is just what came up in Flickr for [laugh]. It in no way depicts the person I met with that I described as a loud laugher. :)

@TheKotel : The Story Behind the Idea

@thekotel is a guy who came up with the idea to tweet your prayers to that Twitter account and he would take it, print it, and stick it in the Kotel (Western Wall) for you. Alon, the man behind the account, told his story at the 140 conf in Tel Aviv with Jeff Pulver.

Here is Alon's post on the talk and here is the video of his talk:

Keynoting at Market Saint Louis on April 1, 2010

STL SEO SeminarA couple weeks ago, Will Hanke asked me if I would like to speak at a St. Louis based conference named Market St. Louis. I looked up the conference date and information and noticed a bunch of my colleagues in the SEM industry participate in this event. I also noticed it was on April 1st, the day after Passover.

I called my wife and asked if she would like to stay by her parents for the first days of Passover. That would be the only way I could have participated in this event. She said sure, so I told Will I can be part of the event.

As it turns out, I am keynoting. That means, I am the first speaker and it will be a question and answer type of format with the conference head.

So if you are in the mid-west (Chicago, St. Louis, etc.) come out and participate in Market St. Louis!

I typically don't speak at conferences for many reasons. But more recently, I have been speaking here and there - as long as it doesn't require me to prepare a powerpoint presentation. I am also heading up SphinnCon Israel, which would likely require me to prepare a presentation, but that is kind of "my" conference - so - well, you know.

Thanks Colts - JETS Now Have a Shot

New York Jets LogoYesterday, the New York Jets played the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts pretty much had their way with the Jets in the 1st quarter. As a Jets fan, I wasn't expecting much and figured they would lose the game.

But in the second half, Smith ran back the kick-off, a 106 yards for a touch down. Then Colts scored again, but then they decided to take out Manning. That decision to rest him up, basically won the game for the Jets.

It was down hill for the Colts after that. Colts new quarterback fumbled at the goal line, Jets recovered to score a TD. Then the Colts, mostly, secondary defense also couldn't do much. So the Jets continued to score and then intercepted a pass by the new QB.

So I would like to thank Jim Caldwell for pulling Manning to let the Jets win.

Now, the Jets can lose next week and make sure they are really not in the playoffs.

Switching to Chromium - Drinking the Google Koolaid

I have been a devoted Safari user for years now. I never switched to Firefox as my daily browser. I loved the speed of Safari. However, when I installed Snow Leopard my favorite Safari extension was killed and buried. I was no longer able to use Inquisitor X and it has been super bad!

I didn't like the speed of Firefox, so I stayed with Safari. Google Chrome was getting a lot of buzz, and Chrome is based off the same structure as Safari, but at the same time, it was not really supported on the Mac. Google Chrome then came out fo the Mac and I gave it a try, but it didn't solve my Inquistor problem, since it does not support extensions yet. But the beta version of Google Chrome, Chromium does have extension support and it works well.

So I went to the extensions, found the Search Box extension and loved it. I configured all my old search shortcuts and I am up and running again. I been testing this configuration for the past week or so. And last night, I finally made Chromium my default browser.

I assume as soon as the official Google Chrome supports extensions, I'll move over to that, since it is apparently more stable.

I had one crash this morning, but that was about it. So far, I use the following Google Chrome Extensions:

  • Chrome SEO
  • goo.gl url shortener
  • Google Mail Checker
  • Google Reader Notifier
  • Picnik
  • Search Box
  • and a couple others I may ditch

chromium

Yea, I drank the Google koolaid - but it is tasty and quick.

SphinnCon Israel Sells Over Half Available Seats in a Week

sphinncon.jpgAbout a week ago, I announced the SMX SphinnCon Israel event. In a week, over half of the available seats have been sold. We now have only 92 seats available and the event doesn't happen until March 7, 2010 - which is over ten weeks away.

So I urge you, do not wait until the last minute. Go register and pay the $50 to be a part of this excellent event. Do it now.

If you are an SEO or SEM in Israel, you really want to be there. The networking alone is worth it. Yea, I know many Israeli's hate to commute more than 20 minutes and coming from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is a total of about 45 minutes. I know, I know. Try living in New York or Texas, where a 45 minute commute is considered short.

But if you are an SEO or SEM, supporting the SEM community in Israel is important. The venue, JCT is supporting this event. We have two committed sponsors who feel it is important to support such an event, they include Compucall and Answers.com and Whired Rhino. I have an excellent team of volunteers doing a ton of the leg work in Israel (since I am based in New York) to help support the industry. That team includes (in no specific order):

The best part of running this conference is the community it brings together.

It is even driving some well known personalities from the U.S. including
Vanessa Fox, Gillian Muessig of SEOmoz, we have word from Google they will be sending a webmaster rep and an Israeli paid search rep.

It is just great to bring everyone into a single room, to learn, network and have fun. And I am honored to be part of that.

So go register today - you won't want to miss it.

More Anti-Semitism in iTunes App Store

I first wrote about the anti-semitic "reviews" in the iTunes iPhone App Store back in September 2008. Some were never removed until Apple changed the policy that you need to download and install the app before writing a review. This was not just an issue with the Apple App Store, it we also so anti semitic reviews on the Palm Pre store.

It has been a long time since we had this pop up. But last night I was notified of an anti-semitic review on our iPhone Hebrew Translator app. Here is a picture of it:

Anti Semitism in iTunes App Store

I think Apple needs to pull a Google and place an ad above their reviews, like they did for both Michelle Obama images and for the search jew.

Pizza Day at RustyBrick

Whenever we hire a new employee at RustyBrick, the day they start, we order pizza pies on the company for the whole office. So since today we hired iMatt, we get to order four pies, with fries and so on, on the company.

I found this funny "Pizza Day" clip on YouTube to show my excitement for the day:

Of course, Jimmy pinged me a minute before I was about to send out my traditional "Pizza" email, asking if there will be pizza.

I Am Obsessed With Paying Bills On Time, You Should Process Them On Time

Cash RegisterWhen it comes to being orderly and efficient, I am a bit of a nut. And when it comes to paying bills, I am a bit obsessed.

When I get a bill in the mail, both for my business or my personal life - I have just about same process. With my business, I enter in the bills into my accounting system that day. 10 days prior to them being due, I get a reminder to pay them in my accounting system. I then typically (99% of my bills that are not on the credit card) login to my bank's bill pay system and schedule the payment to be paid on or before the date it is due. With my personal bills, I actually first use my bank's bill pay system and then enter the check as a line item in my Quicken file with the date being the date the check is sent out by my bank.

This lets me file the bill away immediately and not have to look at it again. That is unless the company I am paying has not set up their accounts receivables correctly.

There are some vendors I must pay several days in advance because I know they have checks sitting on their desk which they do not process the same day or even within two days. Since they do not process them right away, they get entered into their system a few days after they are due and I get a penalty of some sort. To avoid the phone calls to the vendor, I typically pay them a few days in advance so they have time to let the check sit on their desk the necessary waiting period. I think it is wrong and inefficient, but it is what I do to avoid phone calls and more wasted time.

I guess I should not judge.

Which leads me to another pet peeve. Why do some people feel that they are doing you a favor by paying your bills on time? If I do work for your and we agree to payment terms, pay it on time and that is it. Don't act like you are doing me a favor for paying me, when you owe that money. I don't feel like I am doing my vendors a favor by paying them what I agreed to pay them, on time. It is what I agreed to do in exchange for a service or product. Ehh, I am going off on a tangent, I can leave this for another blog post.

Chanukah Treats

The Chanukah treats have been somewhat slim this year but yesterday I received two packages. One from Oh! Nuts and the other from a vendor of mine. Here are pictures...

Before:

Chanukah Basket from OhNuts & Others

Couple minutes after:

Chanukah Basket from OhNuts & Others

Nice when people send stuff, especially for what I do at the Search Engine Roundtable. Makes me feel people get something out of it when they send me thank yous like this or via email.

Israel Shoots Up MacBook

I'm sorry but we blew up your laptop (welcome to Israel) from Lily Sussman is a crazy story. In short, Israeli security was suspicious about this person and decided to not just interrogate the person, but also place these gun bullets in this person's MacBook.

Here is a picture from her blog:

bullets in mac

The story she tells on her blog is pretty nuts. I have heard some pretty serious stories, but this one really moved me. If someone touched my computer, let alone put three bullet holes in it, I might go nuts or faint or something. I am so paranoid about my data that I back it up three different ways, every day.

Even so, I am so paranoid about my computer that I would never leave it in my car. Yea, I rather my car get stolen than my laptop get stolen. I have it backed up, but going through the restore process and not being able to have instant access to my machine would be upsetting. Yea yea - be in the cloud... I am mostly, but still - I still am paranoid (who knows, maybe in a few years, I'd get over it).

I just remember when the Israeli Consulate seized my computer and iPhone, I felt helpless. I know some SEOs that had an incident in the past. ;)

Interestingly enough, this is not the first time I blogged about a MacBook with a bullet hole. I did so back with MacBook Pro Gets Shot But Still Working in February 2007.

Chanukah Is Different As a Parent

Chanukah presentsThis is my first Chanukah (Hanukah) as a dad and it is different from my previous Chanukahs. Now, instead of me getting presents, the presents are all given to my daughter.

Let me tell you, my daughter really 'cashed in' this Chanukah. She got tons of toys and even some jewelry. Of course, I had to spend a nice portion of my Sunday building her toys - as she slept. But hey, that is what we do.

At this age, about 7 months now (yes, time flies), she really had no interest in getting the presents. A classic moment was when she got her bracelet and instead of grabbing the bracelet, she went for the box it came in. Got to love that. Oh, and she loved all the wrapping paper - what 7 month old doesn't?

It is definitely more enjoyable watching your kid get a gift than getting a gift myself. There is something about kids and gifts that is both funny and nice.

It doesn't mean I didn't get any gift. I did get something from my parents. Last year I got an iHome and Jets Slippers and in 2006 I got a Linksys router, projector alarm clock and a binary pillow. Oh, I did get a gift card to my favorite restaurant from a business colleague but overall (so far) the incoming schwag this year has been disappointing).

Sorry for this choppy post, being constantly distracted as I write it.

Recruiting iPhone Coders via an iPhone App

We at RustyBrick are looking to hire a few more developers, including iPhone and PHP/MySQL developers. We don't bother posting jobs on job sites anymore, it leads to way too much spam - so we use expensive recruiters. Recruiters, please do not call me - we have one exclusive recruiter we use. We decided to get a bit more creative about hiring and built an iPhone App that helps us do the recruiting.

We named the app RustyBrick Hire Me and it basically takes someone through three questions to qualify them before having them submit their resume and come in for an interview.

First it asks you the type of position you would like to apply for:

RustyBrick Hire Me iPhone App

After that, it asks you a single multiple choice question to qualify that you technically know your stuff.

Then it makes sure you are able to work in our office.

RustyBrick Hire Me iPhone App

Finally, if you pass the three previous steps, it asks you for your email address so we can contact you.

Check it out the RustyBrick Hire Me app or download it iTunes now for free.

I Hate Flying To/From Chicago : ORD or MDW

My hatred to Chicago airports began back in December 2005. I was leaving SES Chicago, a conference, in a major snow storm. I headed to Midway (MDW) airport to catch my flight back to New York. The airport was a zoo, we sat there for hours, hoping to board and leave Chicago. It never happened. Soon after we were told to prepare for boarding (after waiting several hours in the airport), a Southwest Airline flight ran off the runway, onto the street and killed a six year old boy.

I saw the plane run off the runway. I did not know at the time that it hit any cars or anything. I didn't find out until the next day. What I did find out that the plane didn't just look like it was on the street (it was far away), but it was indeed off the street. It basically could not stop after it landed and skidded off the runway. Soon after, they closed the airport - all flights were cancelled.

Here is a picture:

Chicago Southwest Airlines December 2005

I had two options:

(1) Stay for the weekend

(2) Try my luck by going to O'Hare (ORD) to see if I can get on a completely booked flight and the only flight going back to New York via that airline that night (Friday morning).

I decided to take my chances, go on standby and take a shuttle from Midway to O'Hare. The shuttle ride took hours. The streets were a mess, it felt like an eternity.

When I got to the airport at about 2am, there was only one security gate opened. It was at the furthest terminal from the gate I had to go to. I went through security, which was meant for maintenance folks and then used the back walkways to go to the terminal I had to go to. I started walking through the empty airport to find a ton of people sitting and sleeping outside of a gate, the gate of the flight I was on standby for. I came up to the person behind the counter and she asked, "Are you Barry Schwartz." I said "yes." She said, you made it - you are booked on this flight.

So a few hours after that, we boarded the packed flight and made our way to New York. When we arrived in New York, the snow caught up with us. I remember driving home in the snow, this was after being awake for 30 hours or so. Wasn't fun.

That is why Chicago scares me.

Last night, the first snow storm hit Chicago. Flights north were being cancelled or delayed. I was with my wife and kid. We decided to go to the airport and see what was available. Luckily, they booked us on an earlier, but delayed flight. That flight actually ended up taking off earlier than our booked flight. It worked out. We got home, on time and safely.

Unfortunately, two of the three Continental reps were really not nice. The ticketing one asked if we want to be booked on the earlier flight, I said - sure. But I asked if we can be seated together and she said sure. When I went through security, I noticed she put my wife (with baby on her lap) in the back of the plane and me in the front. I walked to a Continental desk and the woman told me she couldn't do anything. She said there were only middle seats. I said, well - that is fine, is there a middle seat by my seat or her seat? She gave me a nasty look and said - um... I said, please just see what you can do. I then tried the elite access hint and she looked. She told us there was nothing in the front, only in the back. I said, that is fine. I got the tickets and I looked and she ended up putting my wife near me, in the seat she said was not available.

I am sorry, but that makes me mad.

Anyway, flying to/from Chicago is not fun. Chicago itself is a really nice and charming place.

Home Air Filters Delivered on a Schedule

On Time Air Filters LogoIronically, this is not the first time I am blogging about air filters. Before I start, I should disclose that I am a partial owner in the company I am writing about - so yes, it is something that is awesome. ;-)

RustyBrick recently launched a site named On Time Air Filters - guess what they/we sell? You got it, air filters for your home!!!

I am the type of guy that hates going out to stores to buy stuff like this. To me, air filters are one of those things that should be done like water delivery. You schedule it to be done and someone delivers it to you when you need it.

That is how On Time Air Filters works. You go to the air filter wizard, select the number of filters you want (and sizes), the quality and frequency you need them and they are delivered to you - when you need them. So when you get a new air filter delivered, you know you need to swap out the old, and pop in the new one.

BTW - got air filter questions? You can ask merv via email or on Twitter or Facebook.

Why Writing About Yahoo Makes Me Sad

I do a lot of writing on search engines but over the past year or so, writing about Yahoo has honestly made me depressed. I think, subconsciously, I avoid writing about Yahoo because they make me depressed. To see Yahoo where it is now, is quiet frankly, sad.

I tweeted my feelings about why this is the case. I figured I screen shot it over at Google, to cheer me up a bit:

Check Out the New RustyBrick Bags

Over at the RustyBrick Blog I posted pictures of the RustyBrick Shwag Bags. We got an assortment of bags this year, so if you want to see them all, check them out at the blog.

Sorry for a slow week here on the blog, just really haven't had two minutes to write here - and really, all I need is a spare two minutes to do that (which can happen while I am on a call or in a meeting, believe it or not).

Emailing Someone For Their Email Address?!?!?!

One of my guys here just received an email from someone asking him to give him his email address. Got that? This guy emailed someone for their email address.

If you don't get it yet, let me explain it another way. It is like calling someone's cell phone number and then asking them to give them their cell phone number. Hey, you just dialed my cell phone number.

Here an edited out screen shot of this email:

emailing for your email address

The guy is serious. He emailed a specific email address, asking for the email address that he just emailed.

I cannot get over this.
