I Got My Second iPhone 4

iPhone 4 BrokeLast night, the Apple Store called me and told me my "replacement iPhone was ready" and I can pick it up. So I ran over there a few hours later and picked up my second iPhone 4.

I felt guilty while picking it up. There are many people out there really wanting a single iPhone 4 and I got one then dropped it and got a new one a couple days later. For free!

I got lucky, some stores are replacing smashed or chipped iPhone 4s for free and some are not. I got lucky.

So when I got the new phone, the first thing I asked was - do you have any cases. They said no. So I ran to best buy and bought some pink cases - that is all they had. I then also but another InvisibleShield, but this time, I had the guy in the kiosk install it for me and that went well. I didn't want to leave the place without it being protected, even if it meant sticking plastic on it and walking around with a pink case.

Best Buy said I can return it within 30 days and I will. I am waiting on In Case to release a case for the iPhone 4.

I hear lots of people are dropping their iPhones and it smashing. Here are picks from Gizmodo of some damage and read Andy Ihnatko's review where he dropped it and it smashed, and talked about other drop cases. I need a bumper but they are no where to be found!

In any event, I do feel bad owning two different iPhone 4s within a single week.

One day, I need to write a blog post just on walking into the Apple Store. Should be funny...

I Chipped My New iPhone 4!

On Friday, I was showing off my new iPhone 4, making all of you jealous of my Apple sweetness. I feel I had a right to, being that camped out for six hours to be one of the first to pick it up from the Apple Store.

But then the unthinkable happened. I dropped it! I keep my iPhone in my shirt pocket for accessibility. Friday afternoon, I was outside, I bent over to pick up something from the floor and my iPhone slide out of the pocket, and bounced on the concrete walkway.

When it fell, I didn't think anything of it. It maybe dropped a foot and a half and I am sure my other phone has dropped a lot worse. But when I picked it up, I noticed the top left corner was chipped off. The glass was chipped! Here is a picture:

iPhone 4 Glass Nick'ed

Here is another:

iPhone 4 Glass Nick'ed

I kind of freaked out. Not only was it chipped, the phone didn't detect the SIM card. So I turned off and on the phone and the SIM card was again detected, but the chip was there.

My wife asked me what was wrong and when I told her and showed her the damage, she gave me a weird look. You know, the look you get when your man-hood is in question. I then decided to man up and try to let it slide. But it was bothering me the whole weekend.

Then someone I know told me, he dropped his phone, the back shattered and Apple is replacing it for him. So I stopped by the Apple Store yesterday, and they said, they will replace it for me for free.

I got a work authorization and the Apple Store will call me when new iPhones come in. When they come in, they will give me a new one and I'll give them this one. They said they are doing this for people, since the phone is so new.

Of course, didn't Apple play up how durable the new screens are? I have owned 3 iPhones prior to this one and I never had an issue with the screen before. I am hearing reports of people cracking iPhone 4s all the time now. I wonder if there is a design flaw or something larger.

In any event, I will make sure to have a case in hand by the time I pick up the new iPhone. It won't leave the store without a case protecting it.

Got My Quarterly Hair Cut

This morning I ran to the barber to get my quarterly hair cut. They always say the same thing to me - "it's been a long time." Yea, yea - I know - I make them work for the hair cut, but who has time!

I sat down, said, as quickly as you can please.

He got to work and I was out of the office for a total of 20 minutes this morning. Not bad!

My last hair cut took 40minutes and I was rude to him after. 40 minutes of just hair cutting, not even driving back and forth. This hair cut took probably 10 minutes and then 10 minutes for the commute.

Here are before and afters:

Before, from my last video on Friday:

Pictures Of My iPhone 4

It is weird saying iPhone 4. I had the original iPhone, it was called the iPhone. I then upgraded the year after to get the iPhone 3G, which makes sense - it supported the AT&T 3G network. Then the year after, I got the iPhone 3GS, so they made is faster, add an S for speed.

This is my fourth iPhone, so technically it makes sense - the iPhone 4. But just sounds weird to me. In any event, I am already looking forward to the iPhone 4G, cause I hate EVO users!

Since I documented unboxings and/or pictures of all my iPhones, I'd figure I do it again. I didn't do an unboxing this time, so here are just some pictures I took of the iPhone 4 on my desk:

Yes, I bought the dock. I am a docker - many are not.

My invisibleSHIELD For iPhone 4 Experience

invisibleSHIELD iPhone 4 IssueIn preparation for picking up the iPhone 4, I ordered the invisibleSHIELD For iPhone 4. It has been sitting on my desk for about a week, and yesterday, when I got the phone, I placed it on the iPhone 4. Actually, I ordered two, one for me and one for Ronnie, so I did it twice.

I did the step by step instructions but still had a horrible experience.

The top of the shield was placed at the very top of the iPhone. It was perfectly fitted at top, exposing the ear piece and front facing camera. But when I placed the rest of the screen down, the bottom of it was too far. It overlapped on the home button and also ran over the bottom of the iPhone.

We had the issue on both phones. Ronnie tried trimming the excess off.

We both took them home and when resting in our shirt pockets, the bottom of the shield peeled up and became ruined. I tried to fix it but it was a loss cause.

Ronnie even tried to cut it more after that but no success. Here is a picture of how the bottom of the screen was ruined over time:

invisibleSHIELD iPhone 4 Issue

As you can see, he cut it, but the shirt pocket stuff got all over the back of the adhesive side of the screen.

That also happened to mine, even without cutting the screen. Why? Cause the screen seemed to be too long.

I got frustrated, so I ripped it off and threw it away. The iPhone 4 is too nice to make it look like that. I want to protect the phone but I don't want it to take away from its design.

As I write this, I see Danny wrote about iPhone Case options, after falling and buying his iPhone last minute. He is a big fan of the ZAGG brand. I have it for the iPad it is okay. But for the iPhone 4, it simply did not work!

I didn't mind placing my 3GS, 3G and original iPhone in cases. I went through many iPhone cases.

iPhone Madness Over Past Few Days

RustyBrick on iPhone 4 Day at Apple Store Tice's CornerMy writers block was due to all the iPhone madness over the past fews days.

In summary, on Tuesday, 3 of 6 of us who pre-ordered the iPhone 4 found out that the Apple Store did not have our reservations on file. They had us come to the store, with our pre-order confirmation emails and put us on a "managers list." I was afraid to blog about it then, because I didn't want to cause even more confusion prior to the iPhone 4 being released.

This morning, I am glad to say we got our iPhone 4s. At around 6am, Suzy from that Apple Store went through the people on the pre-order line. She had us all down on either the normal list or the "manager list." But there were some people who were not on either list and some of those people were not allowed to get the iPhone via that list. They were moved to the walk-in line, which was 200 people long or so at 6am. So I am glad we took care of our mess on Tuesday.

That being said, you can see some pictures from the lines and at the store at the RustyBrick Blog.

Writers Block Due To Having Something To Write About

newsThe thing is, I have something juicy to tell you all about but I can't.

Due to me having something I really really want to blog about - I simply cannot write about other things that are of lesser value. It feels like writer block, but without the block.

You all know I can write about almost anything. I can even write about nothing.

But for some reason, I am having a hard time blogging something - I believe due to what I really want to write about.

In any event, I am hoping this blog post cleans out the pipes and let's me move forward.

If not, it will be a bit until I begin blogging about nothing again. So tune into Seinfeld for your nothing fix.

Intuit Spams Me On Twitter After Major Outage

For anyone who uses Inuit's products, especially QuickBooks, you would have noticed they had a major outage with their online services yesterday.

It first happened around 9am (EST) yesterday morning. I tried to send online invoices and accept some payments but was unable to due to the outage. At first, I received blank pages that said something like please try again.

Then at around 4pm (EST) I was receiving a much nicer error page, asking users to check out the community blog or follow them on Twitter @intuit. So I followed them to keep track of the status. They did several status updates. Including these final two:

We’re beginning to restore all affected websites & services. Customers already have some access; working nonstop until full restoration.less than a minute ago via web

Outage apparently occurred during routine maintenance. Accidental power failure affected both primary and backup systems.less than a minute ago via web

Good, I thought I was done with it. But then this morning at about 3am (EST), Intuit felt they can send me a spam direct message via Twitter to get me to partake in contest to win a small business grant worth $30,000. No thanks! Those types of things you can Tweet to your followers, but do not DM (direct message) us with that.

Intuit Twitter DM Spam

I am following tons of SEOs, many well-known for pushing the spam envelope. But I never get this stuff from them and don't expect it from Intuit.

A DM with an apology for the outage would have been nice. but this, less than 12 hours after the major outage? Common Intuit!

Pre-Ordered iPhone 4 For Store Pick Up

My kid woke me up about 4am, so I was able to pre-order the new iPhone 4 at about 4:30am. It took several tries, but it finally went through around 4:30am.

Yes, I decided that since the stores open at 7am, I'll do an in-store pickup. I didn't do this last year, but I did it for the launch of the 3G. Well, the 3G you had to get in a store, there were no other options back then.

I'll have more details about which store later on:

AT&T Now Lets Me Upgrade Early: Sweet!

I am nuts, I check to see if I can upgrade my iPhone 3GS, which I bought a year ago, like every day. On June 7th, AT&T moved my upgrade date from October 2010 to February 2011. I did not call and complain, I just did what any blogger would do and blogged it.

I was all set to spend the $399 or whatever it was to upgrade early, without being eligible for a two-year upgrade discounted price.

I logged in this morning and also dials *NEW# on my phone to double check... I am now qualified for a new iPhone 4 for the full discounted price of $199:

iPhone Upgrade Early!

AT&T iPhone Upgrade

I am a bit concerned there is some sort of bug - but hey, I am so happy now!

Tomorrow is pre-order day - the big question I have is do I wait in line at a store (Apple Store or local Walmart) or have it delivered on June 24th?

Dun & Bradstreet Seems Scammy, Here Is Why

DUNS logoLet me start off this rant by saying I am being careful on how I word this post, because Dun & Bradstreet is a very respected company that has been in business since 1841. That being said, I feel as if one of their practices is a downright scam - yes, I said it, a SCAM.

D&B is probably most well known for their D-U-N-S numbers. Wikipedia has a nice explanation of the DUNS number, but basically it is a number assigned to business entities. It was introduced by D&B in 1963 to support D&B's credit reporting practice, instead of using a business's tax ID number, since some businesses file under social security numbers, i.e. sole proprietorships.

When I formed my business, I eventually registered myself with D&B and received a DUNS number. On very limited occasions, I am asked by vendors and clients for my DUNS number. It is so limited that I always have to go to the D&B web site and look it up, and I am the type of person that remembers numbers 835634465 after looking at them once.

Yesterday, I received a phone call from one of the over 5,000 or so people who work at D&B. They told me that recently two different companies asked for a credit report on my company. They asked me if I was aware. I told them, I do know two companies recently asked me to provide my DUNS number to them.

She then said, are you aware your credit rating with us [D&B] was lowered from our highest score of a 1 to a 2. I said, no, I wasn't aware of that.

The way she was talking was very 'salesly' at this point. So I stopped her and said, "what do I have to buy from you?"

She said that they offer a product named "DNBi SelfMonitor" for $449.00. If I pay that, my credit score would go back to 1.

Dun & Bradstreet Scam?

I got angry. I said, my company has never in the 10+ years in business, ever paid a bill late. She said, I am aware of that, your billing history, according to our records, is perfect. She said the reason the credit score has dropped was because we [D&B] have outdated records on your company.

I stopped her again and asked, so you want me to pay you for you to have more updated records? She said, yes. She said they spent millions of dollars trying to keep these records up to date. I said, good - because you sell those records to those looking for credit reports. But why do I have to pay you for that? It is your business to sell up-dated records to your clients.

Think about it... You are in the business of selling data, if your data is bad - then it is worth nothing. Why is it my obligation to pay you to give you data that is mine. In fact, you should pay me to get my data. You should definitely not charge me to give you my data.

She didn't agree with me. So we parted ways.

You can see, D&B charges a $180 per report, with add ons, to companies requesting them:

Dun & Bradstreet Credit Reports

Now I am in a situation where I know D&B reduced my credit score because I won't pay them $500 for me to give them my data. Does that seem scammy or am I nuts?

I am not the only one who believes this, just check ripoffreport.com, creditboards.com and scam.com.

Am I wrong?

Update: I wanted to include some comments I received on Twitter and Google Buzz, in addition to the comments below. In all honesty, I was hoping some one would say I am nuts, because I kind of want to pay for the $500 to improve my D&B rating, but so far, no luck.

Buzz Comments on D&B

Update: A very nice VP at D&B called me on June 24th, with a customer service rep. She basically explained that the sales rep who called me did not tell me everything they should have and they will educate the sales reps better in the future.

In short, you can update your information for free at eupdate or by calling them at 866-584-0283.

I am glad they called and they did admit the sales person who called me was not telling me everything I should have known.

AT&T Moved My Upgrade Eligibility Further Away

So, today is the big day. The iPhone Worldwide Developer Conference. Big news, very excited.

But while many are saying their early upgrade dates are now, mine was pushed from October of this year to February of 2011!

Yes, last week when I checked when I was able to upgrade for a "full discount," AT&T told me it was October 20, 2010. Now, AT&T is telling me February 20, 2011. This is for a customer who has owned an iPhone July 11, 2007 and owned the new one every single year.

AT&T normally gives me a full discount for the new iPhone but I guess not this year. This year, instead, I get a "discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." Or whatever that means.

AT&T iPhone Upgrade

Who knows, maybe they will surprise me. Either way, I am buying the new one.

New License Plate: RustyCar

When I got my new car I was a bit upset that they simply transferred my old plates. I wanted to get the new NY license plates, even though they look way uglier than the original ones - I personally like the colors. Yea, I know.

I decided that I really wanted those ugly plates, so today, I ordered personalized license plates from the NY DMV. I did the transaction online, I would never walk into a DMV. :)

Guess what I got:

rustycar plate

Yep - RustyCar!

Back in the day, I had a personalized plate for my car. It was an abbreviated version of RustyBrick, since you are only allowed 8 characters - but I eventually stopped renewing the personalized version. I still have one of the two of those plates. Maybe one day I will blog about why I got rid of them.

Lexus Enform eDestination System Screens

Lexus DriversSince getting my new car a few weeks ago I have been having a real fun time playing with the technology. I like cars, but I like cars not for their transmissions but rather their gadgets and little toys. The Lexus I have has many little gadgets, some are permanent, some are given for 90 days to try and some are given for a year to try.

I wanted to give you a detailed overview of one feature named the Lexus Enform eDestination system. When I was researching for detailed screen shots and features, I really didn't find much, so I figured this may help others in research mode.

In summary, eDestination lets you lookup places, addresses, points of interestes and so on via your computer and then wirelessly send them to your car. One thing I always hated was fumbling to plug in an addresses for a business meeting and wasting five minutes with that, instead of just getting in the car and driving. This let's me locate the business address, send it to my car and then just drive away in a matter of minutes. It is much easier to find a place on the web site, then enter an address in the navigation. I should add that I could always use the Destination Assist feature, which calls someone and they send the destination to my car - but I will hopefully write another blog post on that later.

To get started you need to have a login to the Lexus Drivers web site and a valid Lexus Enform subscription, which came free with my car for the first year. Once you login, you can then click on the eDestinations link on left hand side within the My Lexus section. Here is the screen for this page:

Lexus Enform eDestination System

Now you want to click on "Manage Destinations" and a new screen will come up to let you search for destinations three ways:

(1) Points of Interest
(2) Address
(3) Zagat

I typically use address but here is a screen shot of the points of interest form:

Lexus Enform eDestination System

Here are the search results page for a look up on medical categories in my area. As you can see, the results are clear and show up in the map:

Lexus Enform eDestination System

The next step is to click on a result and be taken to the add screen. In the screen shot below, this is where you choose the name of the eDestination and which "folder" you want to add it to. I have three folders currently, frequent places, business and personal - but who knows if my folders will change in the future. Here is a screen shot:

Lexus Enform eDestination System

Fill out this form and you are then taken to the sync screen. This screen lets you confirm that you want to send the data to your car's navigation system. Here is a screen capture:

Lexus Enform eDestination System

The sync status also shows on the eDesitnation home page:

Lexus Enform eDestination System

Hit "Send Changes Now" and the screen should refresh after a few seconds and show all green:

Lexus Enform eDestination System

You are not done yet. Now you need to go to your car and click on the "Dest" button on the right side of the navigation screen. Here are pictures from Lexus:

Lexus GS Navigation System

Lexus GS Navigation System

The next part I always find confusing for some reason.

You then go to the "Points of Interest" screen from the destinations screen:

Lexus eDestination on GS Navigation

Then click on "eDestinations" from the Points of Interest screen:

Lexus eDestination on GS Navigation

On this screen you click the "Download" button on the bottom left:

Lexus eDestination on GS Navigation

Say "yes" to the confirmation screen:

Lexus eDestination on GS Navigation

Then the download progress shows up, it eventually will say download is complete:

Lexus eDestination on GS Navigation

Finally, it will then show up in the eDestinations, under Points of Interest, section within the folder you selected on the web site above:

Lexus eDestination on GS Navigation

Overall, I really like how it works. Like I said, I find it confusing that eDestinations is under "Points of Interests" and not the "Address Book," but I will get it after time. Another Issue I have is that it labels all my eDestinations on the map with a Lexus logo. I would love to be able to label them with the various labels given to me in the Lexus navigation screen. Outside of that, I really like this feature.

Pretending To Be Calling From The Office With Your iPhone

Acrobits SoftphoneLast week, Ronnie and I were testing out various softphone solutions for our IP based phone system. After some research, looking at the features, reviews and number of updates to the app, we picked the Acrobits Softphone (aff link). Ronnie did his review of the softphone iPhone app in a new weekly series of blog posts at the RustyBrick Blog.

On Thursday night, for fun, I decided to call some people as if I was in the office.

Let me step back a bit. Since we use an Asterisk based IP-based PBX provided by Fonality (which I am still very happy with after 4+ years), we can use softphones from anywhere in the world with our PBX. So when I go to Seattle next week and want to get on conference calls or tell someone to call me in the office, I can. I don't have to give out my cell phone number, I don't have to forward my phone calls, all I have to do is open the iPhone app and it will start receiving phone calls as if I am at my phone at my desk.

So to have some fun, I made some phone calls last week. I called my mother at about 10pm one night and the first thing she said was "you're still at your office?" I said, "yea" but eventually came clean after laughing. I called a few more people who said the sound quality was pretty good, at worse, it sounded like I was on a speaker phone.

Sound quality has little to do with the app and more to do with the broadband available both on my iPhone and in the office. Making the calls from my home over Verizon FiOS was no problem at all. The office's connection wasn't great, but it was fine - all the calls via this SIP protocol go over the T1. Cable blocks them, unless it is through their own phone system.

But when I tried to make phone calls over AT&T's 3G connection, the sound quality was horrible. Again, not an issue with the app but more of an issue with 3G just not being strong enough to handle a solid phone call.

There are some free SIP iPhone apps you can play with, but this app seems to be updated frequently and have some nice features.

Make sure to check out Ronnie's review on the RustyBrick Blog.
