Apple Thunderbolt Software Update Did Not Fix Display Flickering

Remember my display flickered with the thunderbolt port on my new mac?

So Apple recently released an OS update for this specific issue and it did not resolve the problem. Well, it helped a bit, it does happen less often, but it still flickers too much and goes black for a second or two.

As I said, it is very annoying...

Others in the Apple Forum are also saying the same thing as I said....

Here is a video of the issue again...

Google Saved My Rusty-Car From Being Towed

RustyCar PlatesYesterday, I was at a meeting and I received a call and a bunch of text messages from my office telling me my car would be towed if I don't move it now.

What happened was, I arrived at the office building, the parking lot was like a zoo. I found a spot, but apparently the spot was in a loading dock.

A truck arrived and wasn't able to fully unload. They saw my plates, the RustyCar License Plates, Googled them and called my office.

The office called me and within minutes I was able to move the car. At that time, there were a bunch of open spots but whatever.

So there you go, the my ugly license plates that reads RustyCar led upset people to RustyBrick and helped save my car from being towed.

One of the perks of having a branded license plate - oh yea, I am sure there are plenty cons.

I Had An Identical Twin On Purim

Yesterday was the Jewish holiday of Purim. Part of the tradition is to dress up in costumes and be happy.

In any event, I ended up having an identical twin on Purim.

One of the teenagers in my synagogue/shul dressed up as me. Here is a picture:

My Purim Identical Twin

But don't I already have a twin? I do but we are not identical.

Honestly, most of the time people dress up as famous people, funny objects, or characters - not as living people - so this was funny. Of course, only people in our synagogue got the joke - oh and SEO geeks.

In any event, check out this one guy who dressed up as an iPhone and had RB iPhone apps featured on the home screen bar.

MacBook With Apple Display Flickers & Blackouts Over Thunderbolt Port

Apple ThunderboltEarlier this month, I bought a new MacBook Pro, the one with the new thunderbolt port which is 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0. It also works with the Apple LED Cinema Display, which I have.

Or so they say.

For some reason, I and others with my configuration, are reporting in a Apple Help Forum that our displays flicker and go black every now and then for a second or two.

The flickering and blackouts happen initially a lot when you first plug in the display to the MacBook. Then over time, it slows down and towards the end of the day it either doesn't happen or I do not notice it anymore. But when I notice it, it is annoying.

As I said, there are others with my configuration reporting the same issue at the Apple Help Forum.

Apple Display

They have an Apple Display connected to their new MacBooks over the new Thunderbolt port. If you have this issue also, submit it via the Apple Bug Report form, cause as of now, no fix is in the works.

I certainly hope it is a software fix...

Here is a video of me capturing the issue twice:

Goodbye My Facebook Friends: Don't Take It Personally

I have just defriended most of my friends on Facebook. I was at about 2,000 friends and now I am down to about 750 friends.

I tried to use the rule, do I remember meeting you at least once in person, in real life. If so, then I left you as a friend.

But if I defriended you and I shouldn't have, please add me as a friend again and I will review it more carefully.

Note: I always accepted friend requests on Facebook. I will now screen all friends prior to accepting or rejecting requests.

That being said, let me show you some of the friends I defriended.

I Forgot How Much I Hate Kosher Travel Meals

kosher-mealsLast week I spent most of the work week in San Jose, California for SMX West.

Normally, I'd pack frozen chicken and meals and pop them in a fridge when I get to the hotel. I wrote a whole thing about . I stopped going with the self heating kosher meals for a while now but I forgot why...

When I told a neighbor that I was headed away for a few days, he recommend I try these meals. I said, from what I remember, they are horrible. He told me that he had them the other day and they were "great!" So I decided to give them another try. Big mistake!

Well, the mistake wasn't huge but I ate a meal before heading back to New York. To tell the truth, it made me nervous most of the flight. I ate it and felt 'icky' for a few hours after. It just doesn't taste good.

The other nights I ate at The Kitchen Table Restaurant, which is an outstanding kosher place in Mountain View. It is about 20 minutes from the hotel in San Jose, but well worth the trip. The service and food are solid.

I ate there with Steve, GilR, and Rena. Eli S. stopped by with his wife for dessert.

Anyway, I am blogging this to reminder myself - no more self-heating kosher travel meals!

Goodbye Verizon MiFi, Hello AT&T iPhone Hotspot

iPhone Personal HotspotI've owned and tried to use a Verizon MiFi for 16 months and 18 days now and today is the last time I try to use it.

I have consistently had issues with this wireless data device. I rarely had issues when I didn't need it. But I always had issues when I needed it, i.e. at conferences. Everyone I know who has a MiFi at these events have issues also, they include Danny and Lisa. I spent countless wasted hours with Verizon tech support. For some reason, the device constantly disconnects and then reconnects, killing my sessions during my tasks. I lived with it by tethering via USB, but that is pointless, the device is meant for wireless access.

In any event, today I cancelled the device, which cost me $95 but ultimately will save me money. I spent $60 a month on this device and it barely worked, so $95 to break a contract that ends in October will save me about $325 over the course of those months.

But I can't go wireless free, can I? Well, since iOS 4.3, AT&T now supports the iPhone personal hotspot feature. So technically, I can use the 3G connection on my iPhone to power my other devices. I can use it over USB, Bluetooth and more importantly, over WiFi!

iPhone Personal Hotspot
That is not my password, by the way...

This adds on an additional $20 or so per month to your wireless plan, assuming you have the 2GB plan already. It gives you an additional 2GB of data for the personal hotspot. The cool thing is, if you do not need it, you can downgrade your plan and save the $20 or even lower your plan down to the 200MB plan and save even more.

So instead of the $60 per month, I will just activate the extra $20 or so when I need it. AT&T will prorate stuff and adjust my bill for my actual usage and I can save a bundle with this.

Even more importantly, I've tested this out on Friday and it works. I do not disconnect, it is fast and it is easy to use. Plus, I tested it with using the phone at the same time, while checking email on my phone and surfing the web on my laptop, all off the same 3G connect. It all just works! (Note: Verizon Wireless can't currently do simultaneous phone and Internet but AT&T can.)

I've used the Nexus S with Android's hotspot feature when in Israel and that worked well. I was very happy to not have multiple Internet devices. I can empty my bag of one more internet device and really have a single device for it all, an iPhone.

Erasing My Computer!

Erasing Computer

The picture above is a picture I took of my old computer via my iPhone. I am erasing the whole thing. I picked the 7 pass method, as per Wesley's suggestions, and it will take about an hour for each pass. So I am erasing the computer completely seven times, I guess.

I got my Thunderbolt MacBook Pro just about 40 hours ago, transferred everything over about 30 hours ago and have been using this new machine for about 24 hours.

No major issues and I don't think anything was lost in the transfer, so I am wiping the old one clean. I'll then bring it to the Apple Store to be fixed up a bit and then sell it on eBay or Craigs List.

Feels weird to erase all that data - although I have it on several backups. :)

Good bye old Mac.

Now I've Got A Facebook Impersonator

Facebook Facebook ImpersonatorSo it seems I have yet another impersonator! This time on Facebook! Yea, not the first time, I've been impersonated on Twitter also...

Anyway, the impersonator is at facebook.com/garis.

His name is George Aris and lives in Athens, Greece. He likes the band U2, likes a TV show named "Peep Show" and has 22 friends on Facebook.

Oh yea, apparently, he looks exactly like me and has decided to use my custom built Avatar for his Facebook profile. Yea, the one Dave Naylor made for me.

Here is a larger screen capture:

So please, report this profile and link them to this blog post.

Thanks to Andy Beal and Sam Daams for notifying me about this...

Got New MacBook Pro With Thunderbolt

macbookIt is coming up on three years since my last new MacBook Pro, so when the new MacBook Pros were announced, I decided to get one. Especially since my current MacBook Pro's display is flickering. I have Apple Care, so I plan on fixing my old MacBook and then selling it on eBay.

Yesterday, I picked up the new MacBook Pro for a very good deal at a local place called Micro Center. I don't know how they did it, but the price was $200 less than anywhere else on the web and with sales tax being only 3.5%, I still saved about $150 from the lowest price on the Internet. Plus I got it within 3 hours of ordering it. :)

Last night I put my old MacBook Pro near my new one, plugged them in via Firewire and let it move all the data over. It stated it would take over 20 hours, but it actually ran for about 4 hours. I was up and running with little glitch, as of 11pm last night. Of course, things like Bluetooth and minor things don't work until you reinstall, but not a big deal.

Here are some pictures of the transfer and box:

Is it better? Actually, yes, faster but feels and runs exactly the same as my old one, except for the display not flickring. :)
